Forty Facets of the Ascension, Sarah's new book, is coming to Kickstarter in mid-March! Sign up now to be notified the moment it launches. In this episode, Dad and I discuss whether Jesus was a rocket ship, a hot air balloon, a cosmonaut... or maybe just the risen Lord whose bodily existence is integral to gospel proclamation! We look at some of the differences between Luke 24 and Acts 1's version of the Ascension (be prepared for some surprises) and the many things Luke had to argue against in order to argue for Jesus. If the Ascension has left you perpetually perplexed or scientifically stressed, fear not! This episode is for you. Notes: 1. Once again, folks, that's Forty Facets of the Ascension coming to you on Kickstarter in mid-Marcy 2025! 2. Also, Transfiguration is sneaking up on you soon (March 2)! If you didn't already get Seven Ways of Looking at the Transfiguration, you can get it instantly in ebook or audiobook, or order a print copy right now. 3. If you count among that exalted elite who need good fiction and good theology at the same time, you'll be raptured over my novel A-Tumblin' Down. Following on from Part 1, Justin, Olivia and guest host Chris Jones (of the "Hall of Songs" podcast) explore Elvis's Hot 100 hits that never made it to the Top 40, closing out the movie era with tracks from Speedway and Live A Little, Love A Little and moving into the 1970s, a decade that surprisingly offered Elvis far more pop success than may often be perceived, as only 5 of his single A-sides charted outside the Top 40 (and only the Christmas and gospel singles not charting whatsoever in the Hot 100). Also touched upon are the three posthumous Hot 100 hits that never reached the Top 40: The Elvis Medley, and the remixes of A Little Less Conversation and Rubberneckin'. For Song of the Week, Chris is inspired by having recently watched "The Big Lebowski" to pick Elvis's 1966 home recording of the Sons of the Pioneers cowboy classic that opens that film, "Tumblin' Tumbleweeds," while Olivia goes deep on the extensive history behind Elvis's version of the apocalyptic spiritual "I, John," rooted almost entirely in Black gospel tradition until Elvis's 1971 recording released on the "He Touched Me" album in '72. Visit hallofsongs.com or find it on your podcast platform of choice to hear more of Chris and his buddy Tim. If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. A young bride discovers an uninvited guest in her wedding photos, one no one remembers seeing. Capturing spirits on film is something every ghost hunter hopes for. As cameras have become more technologically sophisticated, it's easier to catch a spectre or two on film. Unfortunately, it's also become easier to fake a spirit photo. The science of capturing imagery on film and interest in the unseen world have been uneasy bed partners for many years. (S3-#29) Cream- Fresh Cream (Reaction) Released December 9, 1966. Recorded July-November 1966 Cream, formed in 1966, was one of the first supergroups. It consisted of three highly regarded musicians from the British blues and rock scenes: Eric Clapton (guitar, vocals), Jack Bruce (bass, lead vocals), and Ginger Baker (drums). Their debut album, Fresh Cream, released on December 9, 1966, blends blues covers and original compositions, showcasing the band's blues roots and groundbreaking sound. Fresh Cream includes a mix of original songs and blues standards like "Spoonful," "Rollin' and Tumblin," and "I'm So Glad." The album succeeded commercially, reaching number 6 on the UK charts and 39 in the US. Notable tracks include "I Feel Free," featuring strong vocal harmonies, and "Toad," one of the earliest rock tracks to feature a drum solo. Following the album's release, Cream quickly became one of the most influential bands of the late 1960s, known for their virtuosic performances and innovative blend of blues, rock, and psychedelic music. Despite their success, internal tensions led to the band's breakup in 1968, after which each member pursued a successful solo career. Cream's legacy endures as a pioneering force in rock music history. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly forum on Neutralizing Workplace Racism 05/17/24 Gus T. Renegade made time to host this week's broadcast in spite of being a credentialed member of the press for the 50th annual Seattle International Film Festival. Gus has been in Seattle for well over a decade, and never made an effort to visit the festival. Thankfully, Gus filled out the application for a "press pass" months ago. Non-white people should seek out training and/or other resources/events to promote your brand, add to your résumé, and/or learn new skills. Festivals like this can be phenomenal opportunities to meet talented people from around the globe who can help develop or "jumpstart" your career. We also get an update from our beloved "Tumblin' Dice," who was wrongly accused of "menacing" his White coworkers when he questioned their consistently Racist and unsafe behavior. His White colleagues deceitfully claimed that they fled the building in fear of their lives and "Tumblin' Dice's" negro wrath We also remind Victims of Racism that maintaining employment might require your attendance at non-work related function from time to time. Maintain a code while present and make your attendance fleeting. #MoreListeningLessTalking #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
The C.O.W.S. Neutralizing Workplace Racism 05/10/24 Our beloved "Tumblin' Dice," a privileged black male who's allowed to operate a school bus transporting mostly White children, shared that he has now been charged with unprofessional conduct and terrorizing a White educator. It seems that a black dude questioning a White person about White educators Racially abusing him constitutes a threat - and may portend negro sexual aggression. We'll also revisit allegations of reckless and unsafe workplace culture at Boeing. Last week, we discussed the legal import of the term "whistleblower." This term confers legal protections to a worker who reports misconduct or criminal activity. Theoretically, without the the threat of unjust reprisals, workers will be less fearful about reporting misconduct. However, two White Boeing whistleblowers (Joshua Dean; John Barnett) have died under suspicious circumstances. Gus T. has said for years, the plantation is not safe. And Boeing mass manufactures weapons to kill. A number of courageous listeners shared about the emotional impact their job is having on their mental health. Under the System of White Supremacy/Racism, no job is more valuable than your well being. We also got another reminder that a person having melanin or being classified as black does not make that them a black sister/black brother, nor does it mean they will have your back on the job. #UnitedIndependent #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Rooted in the concept of living a virtuous life, Stoicism was born from ancient Greek ideologies of being a good person. Stoicism teaches us self-reflection, how to manage emotional reactions to things we cannot control, practicing discipline and living harmoniously with nature. Brandon embodies these qualities and maintains a sense of the Stoic practice through developing daily routines and habits. A fascinating chat that explores spirituality, logic and how Nova Scotians might have a head start in this was of thinking. We are having author Sarah Hinlicky Wilson on this episode about her new book "7 Ways of Looking at the Transfiguration." She is also the author of the fiction book we read for our book club, "A-Tumblin' Down." She talks about theories of the Transfiguration, and why people think Moses and Elijah were on top of that mountain with Jesus. The talks about different accounts of the Transfiguration of Christ in the different gospel accounts. She talks about the interesting position of the celebration of the transfiguration in the church liturgical calendar from a church history standpoint, and it's connections with the crusades, and how that changed in the Reformation, and why it now comes just before Lent in the current liturgical calendar. Moses and Elijah are the only prophets who climb Mt. Sinai (called Horab in some passages), and the significance of meeting God at a mountaintop. Though the transfiguration did not happen on Mt. Sinai, but theres a reaching from the New Testament into the Old Testament in these accounts. It's very important to look at the story progression in regard to the transfiguration (what story comes right before, and what story comes right after) to interpret this passage correctly. While we often look at these passages in segments, this story is part of a bigger story progression in the gospels. It's connection to the Feast of Booths from the Old Testament puts it in context of the Israelites "liturgical calendar" of feasts, connected to the traditional agrarian calendar, and what it meant that Jesus brought them into the Feast of Booths that comes just before the Passover, which was a hard thing to understand just after Peter proclaims that Jesus is the Christ. Sarah does such a great job of explaining the significance of the Transfiguration, and layering the various calendars of the feasts, harvest time, and Jesus showing them that the passover has to happen still, and you can't skip the sacrifice of the Lamb. to bring this event into focus. In this episode of our road trip through the landscape of memory in the American South, we stumble into Greenville, Mississippi, a town with a surprisingly rich past and a unique relationship with the Mississippi River. We will explore the impact of the devastating 1927 flood, how it shaped American culture, and how it occasioned in the Percy family an internecine conflict of Shakespearean magnitude. We will look at the impact of the flood and of Southern aristocratic stoicism on Will Percy, who both upheld and defied societal norms in the region, and became a godfather to a generation of Southern writers, including his cousin Walker. This one has it all: pathos, drama, virtue, vice, and gambling. After giving Tillich his due in the last episode, in this one Sarah goes off, more or less blaming Tillich and his book The Courage to Be for everything that has gone wrong in American Lutheranism for the past 75 years. Overwrought and unjust? Probably. Dad makes the case for Tillich at least asking the right questions, and not accepting certain false solutions. But we both agree there is a more excellent way. If nothing else, you'll enjoy hearing the generation gap on display as you've never before heard it on this podcast! Notes: 1. Tillich, The Courage to Be 2. We are discussing the book "A Tumblin' Down" by Sarah Hinlicky Wilson. (Our September book club book.) This is a fiction book about a pastor's family. This book starts with a pastor wrestling with a passage of scripture that doesn't fit well into his theological framework, and trying to figure out how to pull a sermon from it. Each person in this family goes through seasons of struggling with their faith both from their past, and in the present. But when this family is forced to grieve publically, and their faith gets put to the test, gossip overtakes the church as to how they are grieving, and how they should have handled their grief. This gossip leads to a tension that will either drive the pastor's family out, or cause a church split. As this family starts to crumble under the pressure, an unlikely friendship with a pastor from communist East Germany enters the picture. This book had us laughing and crying. The description of church people, while a fiction book, has so much truth. Christ the center, Christ for me, Christ for us, Christ as church, Christ the humiliated and exalted one, Christ the Lord who is nothing like der Führer who reigned over Berlin at the time a young Dietrich Bonhoeffer gave these university lectures. In this episode we sift through Bonhoeffer's appropriation of Luther's christology, lightly inflected by Karl Barth, as well as his own corrections and innovations, in the service of a community centered on Christ... and no one else.
