An underground chemist, acid-soaked sound engineers, a bestselling author, and a psychedelic band all set out together in the 1970s in pursuit of audio perfection. Together, they created and destroyed a legendary sound system known as the Wall of Sound, which was as tall as a school bus is long and more than a hundred feet wide.  Author Brian Anderson explores this wild journey in his new book Loud and Clear: The Grateful Dead's Wall of Sound and the Quest for Audio Perfection. And oh yeah, they hid all kinds of secret compartments in the speakers so they could smuggle their own homegrown Cali weed from show to show. Matt Groening discovered the things that helped shape his artistic sensibility when he was 12 years old: psychedelia, the Grateful Dead, Catch-22, and of course cartooning. Matt explains to Marc how the road to creating The Simpsons started in Portland, Oregon and had stops in New York City, Los Angeles, the Licorice Pizza record store, the LA Reader and the office of James L. This was the next to last performance at the Rainbow, on October 4, 1981.  This recording really highlights Brent and Garcia.. its a bright and open recording I think you'll enjoy. Some of the highlights are the Jack-A-Roe, Beat It On Down the Line, and Brown Eyed Women that come in the middle of the set, but there are really no clunkers here in my opinion. Whether or not you're a Sherlockian, whether or not you believe that Arthur Conan Doyle was the literary agent for Holmes and Watson and not the author of fantastical tales, you might be curious to learn that there's a new mysterious Sherlock Holmes tale to untangle. Author, screenwriter, and director Nicholas Meyer would like to share that tale in his book, Sherlock Holmes and The Real Thing. Picture the setting: London, 189–. The great city is brought to a standstill by a series of blizzards, and Sherlock Holmes is bored to distraction. It would take a miracle to bring a case to the detective's door. . . But next thing you know, there are several corpses—and Holmes and his biographer, John H. Watson, MD, find themselves drawn into one of the most bizarre cases of the great detective's career: the cutthroat world of big Art, where trickery and deceit abound. Like any good Sherlock Holmes story, there seem to be more questions than answers. What makes a work of art worth killing for? Is it the artist, his mistress, his dealer, or his blackmailer? Who are the perpetrators? The accomplices? The victims? And just who is Juliet Packwood, with whom Watson has become infatuated? Oh, and there's one other problem: Is this a genuine Holmes case or a clever forgery? Is this the real thing? Nicholas Meyer spins a tale for new and seasoned Sherlockians alike. Nicholas Meyer is the “editor” of several Watson manuscripts, including The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, which spent forty weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. His screenplay of the film received an Oscar nomination. His film credits include writing and directing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. He wrote and directed Time After Time, co-created Medici: Masters of Florence, and directed The Day After, about nuclear war that attracted the largest audience ever for a television movie. George Meyer wrote for Late Night with David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, and The Simpsons. An Eagle Scout, he practices yoga and meditation and supports frog and turtle conservation. His favorite Grateful Dead song is “Unbroken Chain.” Buy the Book Sherlock Holmes and the Real Thing Third Place Books

Text us about this show. It's pretty clear when you listen to Tim Case's music that his Wisconsin roots go deep into his soul. Many of his songs have at least references to people or places around the state, but they serve as devices to tell a narrative rather than promote Wisconsin outright. It's just what he knows through his life experiences and observations, so he weaves these elements into his thoughtful lyrics. His 2025 release, Hall of Mirrors, is an album that is influenced by artists like Bob Dylan and John Prine with a sound not unlike albums produced by Daniel Lanois. Call it atmospheric Americana if you like. Tim is creating some beautiful music and using it to give a down-to-earth observations of life."What Am I Missing?," "Bloodbath," "Shots In The Dark," and "The Exit" written and performed by Tim Case℗ 2025 Tim Case. This one was a big deal for me. My guest, Dennis McNally, isn't just a reknowned author, music historian, and publicist, he's someone I've long considered somewhat of a “celebrity” in my world.  From 1984 to 1995, Dennis was the Grateful Dead's publicist and part of the band's inner circle. He's written five books, including the classic Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead, and his latest, The Last Great Dream - How Bohemians Became Hippies and Created the Sixties.  He's married to the love of his life, photographer and author Susana Millman, whose book Alive With the Dead - A Fly on the Wall with a Camera, is one of my favorites.  What struck me most was Dennis's insight into how the Dead operated behind the scenes.  How the band members interacted, what touring was like, and what it was like to be at the center of all that energy for so many years. He was every bit as gracious, articulate, and engaging as I could have imagined and I'm honored to now call Dennis a friend.Speaking of friends, this episode was also a first for me.  I was joined by my good friend Charlie French as co-host who added thoughtful color and questions that I wouldn't have thought to ask! These days, Dennis lives in San Francisco with Susana and is still doing the work he loves - namely as the publicist for Little Feat. It's an honor and a privilege to share our conversation. So join us, and let's see where the energy takes us!https://www.dennismcnally.com/https://mamarazi.com/Stir It Up https://youtu.be/XQxceOPnj9Q?si=i8Vu2Wh_UnpJ_6LXDeath Don't Have No Mercy https://youtu.be/wH8GUfK-MOM?si=frh9iuuf1bCDSuobTime Loves a Hero https://music.apple.com/us/album/time-loves-a-hero/471749182?i=471749184https://www.facebook.com/groups/1983015048745357

The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown: Richard from Bright's Grove - Song 4

Fully & Completely

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2025 69:10

This week, the Countdown goes visual. Joining me is Richard Beland, concert and music photographer, Hip historian, and all-around good dude from Bright's Grove. Richard's camera has been a witness to some of the most iconic moments in The Hip's career — from sweaty club gigs at Fanshawe Pub, to international festival stages alongside Metallica and Neil Young, to that final August 20th show in Kingston. He's shot Gord, Rob, Paul, Johnny, and Sinclair from every angle, and he's here to share his Hipstory.Richard takes us through his early days sneaking into pubs on a scratched-up license, the serendipitous connections that led him to London and Europe with a camera in hand, and the near-miss that almost kept his work out of the book and the doc. He shares the story behind his most iconic photograph of Gord Downie — the toque shot that's since been tattooed on bodies, blasted on TSN, and memorialized in magazines. And yes, he tells us about the time Rob Baker rode shotgun on a milk crate while the band's own song played on the radio. (Waffle butt confirmed.)From the Grateful Dead to The Hip, from fish-eye lenses to stage risers, from Sudbury snowstorms to late-night alleyway portraits — Richard's journey is a reminder of how music, photography, and fandom intersect to tell stories bigger than any one of us.And then comes the big reveal: Song #4 on the Countdown. It's a track that swells with atmosphere, memory, and melody — one Richard says feels like “warm water filling a cold glass.” It's the song that can soundtrack both a snowy walk into Sudbury Arena and a lazy summer night at the cottage, arm around a friend, eyes to the stars. You know it. You love it. And now, you know where it landed. This episode is loaded with Hip history, fan parallels to the Dead, and stories you've never heard before. And if you want even more, Richard will be joining us live on October 4th at A Celebration of The Hip for ALS at The Rec Room in Toronto, opening the night with a special photo presentation before The Strictly Hip take the stage.Next WeekWe head into the Top 3. This week I have the pleasure of presenting this second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on September 11, 1981. They are energized throughout.. the opening Stranger builds until they go into a unique 'Franklin's Tower'. Garcia is firing here. Things calm a bit with the 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' but the 'He's Gone' that follows is first rate. Check out the jam at the end of 'Truckin' for some wonderful jamming into Drums. Post-drums is equally enjoyable with a fine 'Other One' leading into a great 'Morning Dew'. The 'Johnny B Goode' set closer seems appropriate..   Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 9/11/1981 - Friday Two      Feel Like A Stranger [7:15] > Franklin's Tower [13:33]  Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:34]  He's Gone [12:35] > Truckin' (1) [12:18] > Drums [8:09] > Space [5:29] > The Other One [11:09] > Morning Dew [10:55] > Johnny B. On August 9, 1995, Jerry Garcia — the guitarist, singer, and spiritual leader of the Grateful Dead — died of a heart attack at the age of 53 in a California rehab facility. In a career that spanned three decades, Garcia became one of the most iconic figures of the counterculture, guiding the Dead from the psychedelic streets of Haight-Ashbury to stadiums packed with devoted Deadheads. With his warm voice, improvisational guitar work, and unassuming presence, Garcia helped define the sound of an era while creating a community that stretched far beyond music. The recording starts with Joan Baez regaling Mickey with a 'Happy Birthday' chorus.. once we put that behind us we are led into a hot 'Minglewood' and then a quite nice 'They Love Each Other'.  They amp it up a bit with a 'Mama Tried>Mexicali' then Jerry brings out 'Candyman', which leads into a 'Little Red Rooster'. A rocking 'Cumberland Blues' leads into a 'Beat It on Down the Line' and the audience tape lets us hear the crowd loving it.. 'Althea' that follows may be the highlight of the set, but the boys are not done here, with a 'Sailor>Saint' and 'Deal' to close out the first set....     Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 9/11/1981 - Friday Set 1: Banter (Happy Birthday Mickey!)
