Back in 2013, Robin wrote a Listverse article profiling ten heartbreaking cases of unidentified people found under mysterious circumstances—Jane and John Does whose names seemed lost forever. At the time, they were buried under placeholder names like “Little Miss Panasoffkee,” “Lyle Stevik,” and “Beth Doe,” with investigators following dead-end leads and families never knowing what happened to their loved ones. But here's the incredible part: they're not mysteries anymore. Thanks to groundbreaking advances in DNA technology, forensic genealogy, and tireless cold case investigators, several of these forgotten souls have finally gotten their names back. Over this three-episode series, we'll revisit each case from Robin's original article, share the haunting details that captivated true crime followers for decades, and reveal the remarkable breakthroughs that solved them. You'll hear about Little Miss Panasoffkee, identified in October 2025 after 54 years through cutting-edge fingerprint technology; Lyle Stevik, whose identity was uncovered by genetic genealogy but remains protected by his family's wishes; Beth Doe, the brutally murdered pregnant teen who turned out to be 15-year-old Evelyn Colon; Baby Hope, identified as 4-year-old Anjelica Castillo after an anonymous tip; and the Grateful Dead fan finally named as Jason Callahan after Reddit sleuths and DNA testing brought him home. We'll also cover El Dorado Jane Doe (now known as “Kelly”), Caledonia Jane Doe (Tammy Jo Alexander), and explore which cases still remain unsolved, waiting for that one crucial breakthrough. Each episode will take you through the original mystery, the painstaking investigation, and the emotional moment when these unidentified people finally got their dignity—and their names—back.Support the Show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcold

The '90s were a strange time. From Gregorian chants to swing bands, you never knew what would make it onto the radio. But some of the strangest groups to improbably infiltrate the mainstream came from the post-Grateful Dead jam band scene. Our guest today is Mike Ayers, author of Sharing in the Groove: The Untold Story of the '90s Jam Band Explosion and the Scene that Followed. The book, an oral history, is really a blast. It covers all the big players of the era: Phish, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band, but Ayers takes it to the next level by expanding the definition of "jam band" to include Medeski, Martin and Wood, Greyboy and the acid jazz scene, New Orleans funk band Galactic, and John Zorn and the Knitting Factory downtown NYC scene, and much more. This episode, guest host (and Transmissions audio editor) Andrew Horton, Jason P. Woodbury, and Ayers sit down to hash out the era in which even Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo embraced their jammiest free improv tendencies. What are the limits of the whole "jam band" thing really? Come along with us as we dig into Sharing in the Groove. Transmissions is created in partnership with the Talkhouse Podcast Network. We're brought to you by Aquarium Drunkard, an independent music media crew headed by Justin Gage. Over at Aquarium Drunkard, you'll gain access to 20 years of music writing, playlist, essays, mixtapes, radio special, podcasts, videos and more.
In part 2 of "How Owsley Stanley's LSD Changed Music", we dive deeper into the extraordinary story of how Owsley's homemade LSD shaped the sound and culture of an entire generation. From fueling the psychedelic revolution that transformed The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Jimi Hendrix, to bankrolling the Grateful Dead's legendary audio experiments... His obsession with sonic perfection led to groundbreaking innovations like stage monitors, noise-cancelling technology, and the awe-inspiring “Wall of Sound”...a concert system so massive, that it changed live music forever. Ad Free at www.patreon.com/dopeypodcastBilly Strings sits down for one of the rawest, heaviest, and most honest conversations ever recorded on Dopey. In this replay, Billy talks openly about growing up in chaos, losing his dad to heroin at age two, his mom's crack and meth addiction, violence in the home, poverty, hunger, couch-surfing, and the wild, psychedelic, musical household that shaped him. He walks through the exact moments his childhood shifted from love and music into danger, raids, labs, dealers, and watching addiction take over everyone around him.Billy tells stories about tweaking with his parents, smoking meth for the first time with his mom, first acid trips, playing guitar for 48 hours straight, metal bands, coke, crack dreams, and the insane scenes he lived through as a kid and teen.He talks about leaving home at 13, being homeless, trying coke and meth after swearing he'd never do hard drugs, the traumatic first time he did heroin, panic attacks, confronting childhood sexual abuse in therapy, and getting sober from alcohol nine years ago.Billy also goes deep on losing his mom in 2024, learning she died from meth intoxication, how he found out through the death certificate while on tour in Australia, the confusion, denial, anger, heartbreak, poems she left behind, and the letter from his biological father he discovered after her death — the first time he ever saw his father say he loved him.He shares what Trey told him about Al-Anon, how he's been listening to meetings, how his understanding of addiction has completely changed, and his desire to help kids growing up in houses like his. This is Billy Strings telling his story exactly as he lived it — no hiding, no sugarcoating, and no shame. Note: This episode originally ran on October 1, 2024. If you'd like to support WWF for Giving Tuesday, visit wwf.help/tuesday. Global food production is a key driver behind both climate change and the loss of species and ecosystems. In fact, it's responsible for roughly one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions and over two-thirds of global habitat and biodiversity losses. That's because unsustainable food production too often lead to the destruction of forests, grasslands, and other ecosystems in order to produce more food. So how do we create a more sustainable food system? Joining the show today is Dr. Jason Clay, Executive Director of WWF's Markets Institute. Jason has decades of experience working with companies to find innovative ways to make their supply chains more sustainable, and today he'll be explaining his latest initiative: Codex Planetarius. In short, Codex Planetarius aims to establish global environmental standards to limit the harm caused by the production of globally traded food. The idea draws inspiration from Codex Alimentarius, the international code of health and safety standards for food established in the mid-20th century. It makes sense: If the world can adopt standards to protect human health and safety, why can't we do the same for the health and safety of the planet? In this interview, Jason explains how his career journey evolved from human rights to conservation (with help from the Grateful Dead and Ben & Jerry's along the way), and how Codex Planetarius could establish new global norms for food production that help us feed the world without destroying it. Send us a textStephanie Oswald chats with author, Lindsay Rice, about her book Birdenwheel:"BIRDENWHEEL features an ensemble cast of Deadheads in the 1990s who follow the iconic rock band, The Grateful Dead on their summer tour." You can find the full book description on Lindsay Rice's website here. It was such a fun conversation. Stephanie first met Lindsay at her book release party in Salida, CO because the Grateful Dead cover band, Roundhouse Assembly, was playing and since following the Grateful Dead is the foundation of the book it had piqued Stephanie's curiosity. Lindsay describes her novel as a braided narrative that weaves together the lives of her characters as they follow the Grateful Dead. You'll have to listen to discover a unique poetry technique Lindsay used to creatively weave the music of the Grateful Dead into her novel. There's a lot packed into this episode from what inspired her characters to how she decided to self-publish. At the end of the conversation, Lindsay offers great advice for new writers with the encouragement to keep writing:" Keep writing, keep writing, keep writing, keep writing. I think writing is a practice and however it works for you, whether it is isolating yourself or it's doing it every single day in a journal, just develop your own practice of writing and be in a community too. I've also had a lot of writing dates with people. I had writing partners over the years where we would just meet and we would either write for 10, 15 minutes and then check in and then we do it again." In this week's episode, Sid Evans, Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living Magazine, chats with Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay, a singer who's lent her voice to some of the most well known music of the last 60 years. She got her start as a session singer when just a teenager in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and her voice helped songs from Percy Sledge and Elvis Presley become #1 hits. Eventually, she headed to California and made the transition from the studio to live performance after befriending Jerry Garcia and joining the Grateful Dead. She's also got a love of both Southern and Californian cuisines and, of course, her grandmother's delicious biscuits. What happens when one man changes not just how we hear music...but the way we experience it? Meet Augustus Owsley Stanley III...also known as “Bear.” He wasn't just the Grateful Dead's sound engineer; he was the underground chemist who produced millions of doses of LSD, fueling the psychedelic revolution of the 1960s and beyond. Owsley's obsession with purity...in concert sound, and pure acid... transformed live music forever. From the birth of the legendary “Wall of Sound” PA system to the secret labs that churned out the most potent LSD on the planet, this is the long, strange trip of how Owsley Stanley became a folk hero, a criminal mastermind, and an audio pioneer... all at once. www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast This Week on Dopey! Billy Mother Fucking Strings comes on to share his truth! But first Dave meditates, reads spotify reviews, reads an email about premature ejaculation, and a voicemail from Dopey OG Alex on meth, fent and needing makeup! Then Billy joins Dave on Dopey to talk openly about addiction shaping his entire life—from his dad dying of a heroin overdose when he was two, to growing up in houses full of meth use, crack dealers, and chaos, to smoking meth and tripping on acid with his mom as a teenager. He describes leaving home at 13, couch surfing, dropping out of school, playing in metal bands, smoking crack, and eventually getting pulled back toward bluegrass.Billy talks about how his parents' addiction destroyed stability, how meth “fucked everything up” in his hometown, how he stayed awake for four-day binges while playing guitar with his dad, and what finally made him leave. He also describes the first time he did heroin, why he stopped drinking nine years ago, and how addiction still affects him through dreams and cravings. He reflects deeply on his mother's recent death from methamphetamine intoxication, discovering his dad was using too, attending Al-Anon meetings, reading his mom's poems, and trying to break the cycle for his own son. He also talks about touring arenas, the pressure of success, therapy, panic attacks, being molested as a child, and wanting to help others impacted by addiction. All that and much more on a wall to wall traumatic tale of how secrets can make us sick! This week and forever on the good old Dopey show!Happy Thanksgiving! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Last year, Jack Hanley—one of New York's most beloved and idiosyncratic gallerists— announced he would close his gallery after 37 years in business. The news landed with both surprise and sadness: Hanley has always been a disruptor, a dealer with a sharp eye for fresh talent, who followed instinct over market logic. A gem of the New York art scene and beyond. Over the decades, Hanley gave early shows to artists like Günther Förg, Christopher Wool, Sophie Calle, and Christian Marclay—and all of that was long before they became art-world names they are now. He helped define the San Francisco scene of the 1990s, championed artists who blurred lines between high and low and made challenging work; and more recently, even gave the digital artist Beeple his first-ever gallery show. As a former Grateful Dead roadie, avid orchid grower, art fair founder, and having run galleries in several cities, he's seen a lot. And played music with more than a few art dealers. Hanley joins senior editor Kate Brown to discuss transformation and continuity in the art world and art industry. We talk about what's changed, what hasn't, and what keeps art interesting, even as the market has grown more absurd.

Hey there, groove rebels, light one up and crank it loud. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're blazing through songs about weed. From Willie Nelson's outlaw anthems to Snoop Dogg's chronic classics, the Grateful Dead's tie-dye jams, and Cypress Hill's hazy hits, pot's been music's smoky sidekick for decades. But we're not just name-dropping—we're digging deep into tracks that tell America's weed story as it's gone from counter culture to more mainstream – and legal – form of recreation. Back in the Harlem Renaissance, jazz cats were puffing and playing, turning reefer into rhythm. Then it was counterculture fuel—think ‘60s stoners flipping the bird to the law. Now? It's legal in half the states, and weed's gone mainstream, from dispensaries to playlists. So grab your stash, feel the vibe, and join us as we roll through the tunes that tracked America's high times. Let's spark it!" Episode Playlist Check out our episode playlist here.
