We look for the burning bush, the parting of the sea, or a sudden, miraculous windfall. But more often than not, God's provision arrives in a plain boat, paddled by a stranger, carrying a bucket of fish.Consider the man on the riverbank. He was in a desperate place. He had foodless children and a heart full of confusion. He had obeyed a prompting to go to the river, but as he stood there watching his boys throw rocks into the water, the silence of God must have felt deafening. He had no fishing pole. He had no plan. He only had a bucket and a desperate hope.Then, out of the haze of the morning, a man in a boat paddles toward the shore. He asks a simple, almost casual question: "What's for dinner?"In that moment, the man on the shore didn't see a miracle; he saw a fisherman. But when that bucket of fish was handed over, the man didn't just see food; he saw the faithfulness of a God who heard him when he felt invisible. He wept because he realized that while he was worrying about the "how," God had already coordinated the "who."God had moved the heart of a man miles away to catch exactly what was needed and then guided his paddle to the exact spot on the shore where a father was waiting in despair.If you are standing on the riverbank of your own life tonight, feeling like you lack the tools to solve your problem, or if you feel you are fishing without a pole, take heart. Your provision may not come from your own effort, and it may not arrive in the form you expect.The answer to your prayer might currently be in a boat, paddling your way. Your job is not to figure out the logistics of the miracle; your job is simply to be at the river. Bring your bucket. Stay expectant. For our second Sandra Dee episode we watched two films from 1959 (March 1959, to be exact): the Ross Hunter family melodrama A Stranger in My Arms (directed by Helmut Käutner), from a novel by the author of Written on the Wind, and the infamous Gidget (directed by Paul Wendkos), based on Frederick Kohner's novel about his daughter. We do our best to reconstruct the movie Stranger could have been while marveling at Dee's exhausting performance of a neurotic rich girl, and then turn our flabbergasted attention to Gidget, a movie with much more on its mind (particularly concerning gender roles and alienation) than we could ever have imagined based on its reputation. Consequently, the Taste Buds had a lot to untangle. Ryan, Mike, and Greg welcome Cecilia Dillon and Rafiq Taylor of the Tubi or Not Tubi podcast to the panel. Together, the five of them debate Ferrell's restraint, the film's shaky romance, and its clever games with authorship. Above all, they ask whether Marc Forster's fable deserves a deep bracket run in the 2006 Movie of the Year bracket.About the FilmHarold Crick lives by the numbers. He counts his toothbrush strokes, times his walk to the bus, and audits taxpayers with quiet precision. One Wednesday, however, a voice starts describing his every move. The voice belongs to Karen Eiffel, played by Emma Thompson, a celebrated novelist with a decade-long case of writer's block. Her books always end with the hero's death. Harold, therefore, has a problem.Zach Helm wrote the screenplay, and Marc Forster directed after Finding Neverland and before Quantum of Solace. Their catalog ranges from micro-budget Tubi Originals to cult favorites like Hundreds of Beavers, and they have interviewed filmmakers such as Coherence director James Ward Byrkit. Ceci and Rafiq bring quick wit and a real affection for overlooked cinema, which makes them ideal guests for a Stranger than Fiction podcast conversation. After all, this is a movie about a character who fears he is a footnote in someone else's story. Moreover, both hosts know the 2006 landscape well, and they arrive ready to argue.Harold and Will: Ferrell Plays It StraightThe first topic tackles the elephant in the room. Will Ferrell built a career on volume, chaos, and grown men screaming in their underwear. Here, by contrast, he speaks softly, stands still, and lets Emma Thompson's voiceover do the shouting. The panel also discusses the on-screen graphics that visualize Harold's counting, and how they reinforce the idea of a life reduced to data. Therefore, this Stranger than Fiction podcast segment doubles as a mini seminar on narrative theory, minus the tuition.Rushmore: The Music of 2006The Rushmore segment returns, and this week the mountain honors the music of 2006. Each panelist nominates the faces that defined the year's sound. Fittingly, Stranger than Fiction itself leans on music, with Spoon's Britt Daniel co-composing the score alongside Brian Reitzell. Put away your phone: Create a little more space for connection by taking out your earbuds or putting your phone away, rather than using it to avoid interacting with the people around you. Take the first step: When you notice an opportunity, say hello, introduce yourself, or ask a simple question. You don't need the perfect opening—just get the conversation started. Ask a follow-up question: Show genuine curiosity about the other person. Ask about something they've mentioned and let the conversation unfold naturally. Share something about yourself: Connection goes both ways. Offer a little about your own experiences, interests, or perspective so the conversation becomes a two-way exchange. Try it again: Pay attention to how you feel afterward, then look for another opportunity to connect.
