Building on Jack's love of birds and bird-feeding in his garden – new research shows that listening to birdsong may actually benefit your mental health and improve sadness and depression. Researchers took people with and without depression and then made them feel sad in the laboratory by playing movie clips. Sidenote – I read another study where they made people feel sad by playing a piece of Russian classical music slowed down to half speed and matched with sad faces! It's not uncommon in psyc studies to mess around with people's emotions and then make them feel better. Then taught people mindfulness breathing or gave them opportunity to listen to birdsong. Both of these treatments led to people feeling happier. Listening to birdsong helped peoples heart rates to return to normal functioning, indicating it was good for the body as well as the mind. What are the implications of this? Both are helpful at improving people's mood. Mindfulness requires more effort from a person and learning a skill so might be harder to get up and running in the first place. But of course once you've learnt it you can do it whenever you want – the ideal self-help tool. Listening to birdsong requires much less effort on behalf of someone – you just lie back and do it! This might be particularly useful for someone who is quite down and has little energy or motivation to do much. Shows how our emotional state can be changed both intentionally and on-purpose, and just automatically Also birdsong is free and possibly easily available – but you do need to be near some trees. This could have implications for things like urban design and building green spaces near and around new housing developments. This builds on a growing amount of research showing the benefits of nature-based interventions for improving mental health. In the UK these are called “green prescriptions” – things like gardening and going fishing – like the UK TV show “Mortimer and Whitehouse - Gone Fishing”. Interestingly, there was a recent NZ study that showed fishing was really helpful in reducing depression, psyc distress, and anxiety Media release: World's largest angling mental health study reveals remarkable benefits - Fish & Game So get out there – feed the birds and then listen to them sing. Garden or go fishing. It's good for the mind as well as the body! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

RHLSTP Book Club #156 - Fires Which Burned Brightly - None of your tat this week on the book podcast with the genius that is Sebastian Faulks, but test one is how will he react to Richard's alternative title for this collection of essays that form a loose autobiography! Once we've over that hill, it's plain sailing as they discuss how much the world has changed in the last few decades, the ethics of sending an 8 year old to boarding school, the glory days of journalism and mental illness. Is Richard still in a dream that started 25 years ago? How much research goes into a book like Birdsong? What is the motivation for writing books continuing the stories of James Bond and Jeeves and Wooster (not in the same books!)? Plus a discussion of 20th century toilet paper.Sebastian Faulks is the author of Fires Which Burned Brightly: A Life in Progress (Hutchinson Heinemann £20, out now). How fixed is the borderline between human music and the sounds of nature? That is a question that guides the work of Los Angeles-based composer Alexey Seliverstov. In this programme, Regan Morris follows Alexey's creative process from recording the dawn chorus in the Santa Monica mountains, through the ingenious transformations of the field recordings to the finished multi-channel and multi-sensory installation for the Shelemay Sound Lab at Harvard University. There is more to Alexey's music than first meets the ear: some of the ‘birds' are actually the sounds of his own and his brother's voices recorded when they were children and altered beyond recognition by Alexey's sophisticated processing. Adding ear-prints of empty spaces to the sounds of chirping synthesisers, similar to the effect of repeated exposures on an old-fashioned camera film, draw us further into Alexey's imaginary landscapes. Are these soundscapes artificial or still mostly natural? How does mixing the sounds of nature and sounds that we associate with humans, such as pianos, alter our idea of what music can be?
Imagine sitting beside a tranquil lake in a forest, listening to the wood thrush somewhere in the distance. The gentle sound of water lapping softly against the shore as the bird's melodic song drifts through the trees, creating a peaceful moment frozen in time. This calming soundscape combines gentle lake waves and distant birdsong to quiet the mind and encourage deep, natural rest. Ideal for sleep, meditation, or relaxation, it brings the peaceful presence of nature wherever you are. This podcast is entirely independent, and your support helps keep it going. There was a lot to celebrate this Culture Night, as Newcastle West Film Club in Limerick marked 16 years of screening an impressive programme of films. Meanwhile, Coimisiún na Meán's Sound and Vision Scheme has just turned 20 - and what better way to honour both occasions than with a screening of the scheme's recent success, documentary Birdsong? In Desmond Complex on 19th September, Coimisiún na Meán hosted a brilliant evening of music, conversation, and cinema, culminating in a live Q&A with the film's producer, Ross Whitaker, hosted by Film Ireland Associate Editor Gemma Creagh. Listen back to these highlights of the evening: Chatting with Coimisiún na Meán's Brian Furey — [00.35] A history of the club with founding member Mary Carroll — [08.18] Live Q&A with Ross Whitaker — [23.55] A word from the members — [38.53] About Sound and Vision Over €300 million awarded to almost 5,000 projects. Coimisiún na Meán is celebrating 20 years of the broadcasting funding scheme, Sound & Vision. The Scheme, which was first launched in 2005, has played a crucial role in shaping the Irish media landscape by supporting the creation of diverse, culturally relevant, and innovative content for Irish TV and radio audiences. Over the last two decades, nearly 5,000 projects have been offered funding of just over €300 million to make programming in Ireland, for Irish audiences. These include: 659 drama projects, 94 animation projects, just over 3,200 documentaries, 268 educational projects and 445 entertainment projects, as well as targeted funding rounds to support the commercial and community media sectors. Sound & Vision remains a vital source of funding for producing Irish language content with over 800 hundred of the projects funded classified as Irish/bilingual.

Today we have Ty. She is 76 years old, lives in Bozeman, MT and she took her last drink on March 8th, 2008. This episode brought to you by: Better Help – 10% off of your first month #sponsored Café RE – THE social app for sober people. [04:21] Thoughts from Paul: Paul tells us that every time he goes into a retreat or event with RE, he asks the universe to send us a (safe) wildlife encounter. This past retreat in Bozeman was no different. This time, it showed up in the form of a bald eagle while we were spending time at the lake pavilion. After it flew in, it perched on a lone pine tree branch about 50 yards away from us where we admired it's beauty and Ty, an avid birder, shared some facts about the bald eagle with the group. Paul shared that while editing the interview he did with Ty, he noticed some background noise. Normally, he does his best to avoid this, but this time he welcomed it. You will hear in the background the sound of birds. He says it was if the universe sent the birds to support Ty. [08:45] Paul introduces Ty: Ty lives in Bozeman, MT with her husband Dan. She likes to hike (gently), watch birds and enjoys reading. She is technically retired but has been editing the RE podcast since episode 25. Ty grew up with an alcoholic father in Fort Worth, TX. Her mother did not allow alcohol in the house, so her father was gone a lot. Ty didn't drink much during high school due to the fear of her mother detecting it on her. After she graduated, Ty got married to her boyfriend. That marriage didn't last long because her husband was an alcoholic and became abusive. They divorced when she was 21. During that time Ty would go out with friends she worked with where they would drink together. She says her rebellion against her father came out in that time – it was the early 70's filled with drugs and rock and roll. Ty said she spiraled shortly after her dad died and went through a dark time. She sought help from the county health board and after they placed her on mood stabilizers, she started drinking less. At age 26, Ty went to university where she chose doing well in school over drinking and partying. A month after graduating college, Ty had a baby. Her daughter had a lot of health and developmental issues, so she became a full-time caregiver for her throughout her 30s. In her 40s, Ty met her current husband Dan, who does not drink. They moved to Bar Harbor, where Ty worked in the restaurant industry. This exposed her to fine wine, which she would enjoy at home after work, while her husband was sleeping. Ty says red flags began to show when she switched to vodka because it has less calories. She began to hide her bottles and drink in secret. Moderation for Ty was when she would quit drinking for Lent. One year she found that she wasn't able to which got her thinking more about her drinking. She was attending Al-Anon meetings but was interested in the literature for AA. After taking some quizzes to determine if she was an alcoholic, she started to believe she might be. The next morning while in church, Ty says she prayed: “I can't do this will you help me”. That evening she went to her first AA meeting where she introduced herself as an alcoholic. It was the first time she had said it to herself or anyone else. Ty says she burned the ships early on. Honesty and openness became very important to her. She knew she had to do the work and became comfortable asking her husband for support in various ways. AA has been a big part of Ty's recovery story since the beginning. She has witnessed a lot of growth and change in the recovery world since quitting. Joining RE opened up so much for her and she says her toolbox expanded in terms of resources and learning different things. Ty's parting piece of guidance: it's harder to get sober than it is to stay sober. Recovery Elevator You took the elevator down, you gotta take the stairs back up. We can do this. Picture yourself lying in a lavender field in the South of France on a warm summer afternoon. Bees drift gently among the blossoms, cicadas pulse in the warmth, and birdsong carries across the countryside. Research shows that birdsong can reduce stress, ease anxiety, lift mood, and restore focus, making it one of the most restorative sounds in nature. This pure nature soundscape is ideal for sleep, meditation, study, or quiet reflection—bringing the calm of Provence wherever you are. Happy Labor Day Weekend! I hope that this first set from the 2nd night of a 3 night Rex Benefit run at the Greek Theater is a great start to your holiday! This is a fine recording of the band during one of their more interesting periods. 'Cold Rain and Snow' is always a great opener and I loved the 'Row Jimmy';. I even found the Minglewood to be quite good... and the first set Victim is unusual and goes into a very nice 'Bird Song'. The second set which we'll hear next week is more improvisational, but I hope you enjoy this fine first set.. A challenging, well-rounded flow that poured out without much thought, apropos of the theme of class.
Just like when we struggle after a poor night's sleep, a new study reveals birds also suffer when their sleep is disrupted.

Found in Australian forests, male Superb Lyrebirds can mimic calls well enough to convince the bird they're imitating that the lyrebird is one of their own! While males sing to attract mates, females imitate the calls of predators, which could help frighten other birds off their territories.Listen to this episode in Spanish here.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, Stewart Alsop talks with Cathal, founder of Poliebotics and creator of the “truth beam” system, about proof of liveness technology, blockchain-based verification, projector-camera feedback loops, physics-based cryptography, and how these tools could counter deepfakes and secure biodiversity data. They explore applications ranging from conservation monitoring on Cathal's island in Ireland to robot-assisted farming, as well as the intersection of nature, humanity, and AI. Cathal also shares thoughts on open-source tools like Jitsi and Element, and the cultural shifts emerging from AI-driven creativity. Find more about his work and Poliebotics in Github and Twitter.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:00 Stewart Alsop introduces Cathal, starting with proof of liveness vs proof of aliveness and deepfake challenges.05:00 Cathal explains projector-camera feedback loops, Perlin noise, cryptographic hashing, blockchain timestamps via Rootstock.10:00 Discussion on using multiple blockchains for timestamps, physics-based timing, and recording verification.15:00 Early Bitcoin days, cypherpunk culture, deterministic vs probabilistic systems.20:00 Projector emissions, autoencoders, six-channel matrix data type, training discriminators.25:00 Decentralized verification, truth beams, building trust networks without blockchain.30:00 Optical interlinks, testing computational nature of reality, simulation ideas.35:00 Dystopia vs optimism, AI offense in cybersecurity, reputation networks.40:00 Reality transform, projecting AI into reality, creative agents, philosophical implications.45:00 Conservation applications, biodiversity monitoring, insect assays, cryptographically secured data.50:00 Optical cryptography, analog feedback loops, quantum resistance.55:00 Open source tools, Jitsi, Element, cultural speciation, robot-assisted farming, nature-human-AI coexistence.Key InsightsCathal's “proof of liveness” aims to authenticate real-time video by projecting cryptographically generated patterns onto a subject and capturing them with synchronized cameras, making it extremely difficult for deepfakes or pre-recorded footage to pass as live content. The system uses blockchain timestamps—currently via Rootstock, a Bitcoin sidechain running the Ethereum Virtual Machine—to anchor these projections in a decentralized, physics-based timeline, ensuring verification doesn't depend on trusting a single authority.A distinctive six-channel matrix data type, created by combining projector and camera outputs, is used to train neural network discriminators that determine whether a recording and projection genuinely match, allowing for scalable automated verification.Cathal envisions “truth beams” as portable, collaborative verification devices that could build decentralized trust networks and even operate without blockchains once enough verified connections exist.Beyond combating misinformation, the same projector-camera systems could serve conservation efforts—recording biodiversity data, securing it cryptographically, and supporting projects like insect population monitoring and bird song analysis on Cathal's island in Ireland.Cathal is also exploring “reality transform” technology, which uses projection and AI to overlay generated imagery onto real-world objects or people in real time, raising possibilities for artistic expression, immersive experiences, and creative AI-human interaction.Open-source philosophy underpins his approach, favoring tools like Jitsi for secure video communication and advocating community-driven development to prevent centralized control over truth verification systems, while also exploring broader societal shifts like cultural speciation and cooperative AI-human-nature systems.

Here we are - Jerry's Birthday and the start of the Days Between - as well as the day of the first of the GD 60 concerts out in San Francisco! I do envy all those able to attend! In the meantime we have a fine show from August of 1972 to start the celebrations on this week's Deadpod. This comes from Sacramento California on August 12, 1972. We will listen to the long first set this week - then the second set when I return in two weeks. I have to be gone next week and due to the constraints of posting on my podcast host I will be unable to have another Deadpod ready for next Friday. You will find lots to enjoy here - Keith and Donna are still settling in as the band adjusts to no Pigpen, but there is plenty of great music here. I will simply call your attention to the fine jazzy 'Bird Song' and of course the 'Playin' In the Band'. There is a rare 1st set 'Stella Blue' and plenty of rocking here as well. The band is also quite chatty which is always fun to hear. Many birds have an excellent sense of smell. And the odors that birds make can act as mating signals for some species. The source for many of these scents, says biologist Danielle Whittaker, are the microbes that live in birds' preen oil, which they use to keep their feathers in good condition. Danielle and other scientists are studying how the genes that regulate birds' immune systems might help control these microbes. This research could help connect the birds' genetics to the scents they use to attract mates. When it's predictable and wildlife is well adapted, natural flooding can create a biological bonanza. In the Amazon River Basin, which holds one-fifth of the world's fresh water, annual rains can raise water levels 30 to 40 feet in just days. Forests turn into vast lakes, dotted with trees, while a massive push of sediment erects new islands almost overnight. It's a lush world that's home to some of the world's most iconic birds, including toucans, macaws, kingfishers, tiger-herons, and this Russet-backed Oropendola.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Musician Andrew Bird is known as a songwriter, violinist, and, like his namesake, a virtuoso whistler. He showcases all of these skills in the song Rare Birds, which was created as part of The Birdsong Project in 2020. Whistling melodies inspired by Mourning Doves and the Kaua‘i ‘O‘o alongside his violin, Andrew creates a kind of otherworldly natural soundscape.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote?
