This week's Deadpod features one of the January shows in the Grateful Dead's history - this one from January 18, 1979 in Providence, Rhode Island. This is a nice first set, energetic, especially for the time period (in a month Keith Godchaux would be leaving), and features some nice versions. I am especially fond of the 'Cassidy' here but there are several excellent tunes in this first set. On this first Friday of 2025, we continue with the conclusion of the Grateful Dead's New Year's Eve concert from December 31, 1971 at Winterland in San Francisco. A long, fun if somewhat sloppy at times show, the enjoyment the band was having is evident throughout.. After a Bill Graham intro they go into Truckin' then Billy really goes off as they go into a Other One jam, then quite interestingly enough into Me & My Uncle before going back into The Other One.. Some other highlights here include the first ever version of Big River, and the last Pigpen version of 'The Same Thing' which the band would not bring back for 20 years... There is some great high energy jamming in the 2nd half of the set, which apparently went on until 3:45 AM. Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 12/31/1971 - Friday Two Truckin' [8:45] > Drums [3:07] > The Other One Jam [6:01] > Me And My Uncle [2:50] > The Other One [10:19] Space [1:53] > Black Peter [8:38] Big River [3:32] The Same Thing [7:22] Ramble On Rose [5:45] Sugar Magnolia [6:42] Not Fade Away [6:09] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:08] > Not Fade Away [3:00] Encore Casey Jones [5:24] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010325.mp3 My sincere thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod! Howdy! I figured it was about time to get back in the saddle and get another Deadpod out to my wonderful audience.. First off thanks for your kind get well wishes! They all have meant so much..forgive me for not answering each of them, but I'm having some serious trouble typing with alot of numbness in my right hand since my operation.. This week I thought it appropriate to listen to a fine show from the great state of North Carolina, I could only wish that I could help the folks there who have been ravaged by the terrible storms.. This is a well played show from the fall of '89.. a nice Foolish Heart starts things, and frankly I enjoyed every song in this first set. The highlight might be 'Bird Song' where Jerry uses a number of ineresting MIDI effects... The Johnny B Goode encore is also a nice touch.. Grateful Dead Charlotte Coliseum Charlotte, NC 10/22/1989 - Sunday One Foolish Heart [8:03] New Minglewood Blues [7:28] Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [5:56] Queen Jane Approximately [6:00] Ramble On Rose [6:47] Beat It On Down The Line [3:13] Bird Song [14:12] Johnny B. 'Uncle' follows then 'You Win Again' which would only be played 2 more times before it was retired in September. A high energy 'Greatest Story' follows and we close this edition of the Deadpod with some fine Garcia work on 'Ramble on Rose'.. In honor of the upcoming St. Patrick's Day I decided to bring you a St. Patrick's day Dead concert - this one is from March 17, 1988 at Oakland California. The first set, which we will hear this week, features a nice opening 'Hell In A Bucket' into a fine 'Sugaree'. Another highlight is the first 'Memphis Blues' without Bob Dylan. 'Row Jimmy' and a nice 'Let It Grow' finishes the first set. I'll bring you the second set next week.. Grateful Dead Henry J. "The Sphere in Vegas: U2's Sonic Odyssey and the Future of Concert Venues"Larry Mishkin is joined by great friend of the show, Alex Wellins to catch up and talk about a Grateful Dead concert held at Poly Pavilion on November 20th, 1971. Larry talks about the significance of the show, including the band's transition in music style, notable songs played, and the presence of famous basketball player Bill Walton in the audience. Later, Alex discusses recent concerts they attended, highlighting U2's performance at The Sphere in Las Vegas, known for its immersive audiovisual experience, and another show at the historic Castro Theater in San Francisco featuring the band St. Paul and the Broken Bones. Both Larry and Alex express enthusiasm about these diverse musical experiences..Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast Grateful DeadNovember 20, 1971Pauley Pavillion – UCLAL.A.Grateful Dead Live at Pauley Pavilion - University of California on 1971-11-20 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive By late 1971 Dead's transformation from Primal Dead to Americana Dead was well on it's way. This concert is a great snapshot of that time, this show being more in the Americana camp with the a killer 25 minute jammed out Other One (including its Bill Kreutzman drum solo lead in) really being the only true nod to the Primal era . Also, the band was in transition as Pigpen missed the show as part of his descent into alcohol related illnesses that eventually took him in March 1973. Keith had been playing with the band since February but Mickey began his “leave” in February after night one of the Capitol Theater run. So this night is just five of them up on stage playing their hearts out for the fine students of UCLA and other Deadheads ( then a very brand new “thing” having just been recognized by the band in the liner message inside the Grateful Dead album stating: “DEAD FREAKS UNITE! WHO ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU? HOW ARE YOU? Send us your name and address and we'll keep you informed”) One fact that should be obvious given the venue and the time – an unknown UCLA student and want-a-be college basketball player, Bill Walton was in attendance along with some of his Bruins teammates for this first ever Dead show at Pauley Pavilion, famed home court for the UCLA Bruins, a team that following the amazing successes of Lew Alcindor (Kareem) and Sidney Wicks, now was being led for the first time by Bill and his teammates Jamaal Wilkes and Greg Lee (spoiler alert: Bill has some success at UCLA too). Bill, of course, went on to be an NBA All-Star and a regular attendee of Dead shows and, as Alex can attest, not unusual to see him at a West Coast dead show right up until the end – kind of hard to miss a 7 foot deadhead with his red hair and tie dye apparel. Rumor has it when they knew he was going to be at a show the band would set up a basketball hoop backstage and that Bruce Hornsby was a hooper too. INTRO: Bertha Track No. 1 3:30 – 4:37 Great traditional opener although it was known to pop up in different spots during shows from time to time. At this point, it is still “new” having been debuted earlier that year, on February 18th at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester. Never released on a studio album, but it is the opening tune on the Dead's live album, “Grateful Dead” a/k/a Skull and Roses (or Phil's preferred name, “Skull Fuck” which was promptly rejected by their label, Warner Bros) on September 24, 1971. From shows in NYC at the Fillmore East and the Hammerstein Ballroom in the Manhattan Center (plus Johnny B. Goode from Winterland – couldn't completely ignore the west coast). SHOW #1: Tennessee Jed Track No. 5 0:45 – 1:46 This is one of the “new” ones played in this show. Along with Mexicali Blues, One More Saturday Night, Ramble On Rose and Jack Straw had all just been played for the first ever just two months earlier on October 19, 1971 at the Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis – also Keith's first show. A tune that more than most really captures the change in the band's direction as you have Garcia previously of Dark Star, St. Stephen and Eleven fame twanging away, musically and vocally, on a song with a feel that is a cross between country, western and a dash of rock n roll. Deadheads of Alex's and my era will note how much quicker the tempo is in this early version and Garcia's noticeable energy evident from his strong vocal performance. Played 436 times in concert, putting it at No. 15 of the list of the Dead's most played tunes.1st (again) on Oct. 19, 1971 in MPLSLast on July 8, 1995 at Soldier Field, Chicago A great sing along tune that the Deadheads always enjoyed, normally found in the first set, towards the middle. SHOW #2: Jack Straw Track No. 10 :12 – 1:20 As just mentioned, this another “new” one just two months old. Everyone loves Jack Straw, even the Band which is why it checks in at No. on list of most tunes played by the Band with 476 performances (last one on July 8, 1995 at Soldier Field). But in this early version, there is a little bit of a change from the version we all know and love. First, thing to know it is a tune by Hunter and Weir. Garcia did not write it although he sang it with Weir in a “trading off of verses” style. Second, in these early versions, before the Europe '72 tour, Weir sang all the verses like we just heard, “I just jumped the watchman, right outside the fence” was always sung by Jerry, but here, Weir sings it. Not sure of the reason for the change, but I like it a lot better with Jerry singing his verses (the other being “Gotta go to Tulsa, first train we can ride”). First time with Jerry on vocals was May 3, 1972 at the Olympia Theater in Paris, that also just happens to be the version of the song that wound up on the Europe '72 album. Although in its earlier years the song would appear in either first or second set, after their 1975 hiatus it became an almost exclusive first set song. And after Brent joined the band, almost always a show opener. Home to the more than occasional Phil base bomb, it was one of the Band's most popular tunes and a great way to open any show (especially if they had just opened with Bertha the night before so you got to catch them both!). SHOW #3: Ramble On Rose Track No. 18 0:00 – 1:28 Last of the “new” ones that we will feature today. Just like Tennessee Jed, upbeat, good energy, Jerry and the boys are having fun, like with any new creation. Still working out all the details, the james, keeping track of the lyrics and Jerry has not yet developed his signature growl on “goodbye mamma and poppa, goodbye jack and jill”. What I really like about this version and why I chose a clip from the beginning of the tune is to hear Keith's piano accompaniment that works so well with this song and adds another layer of creativity to the mix. Garcia always seemed to get energy and inspiration from the band's keyboard players and Keith, even this early in his career, is no exception. After its introduction on Oct. 19, 1971 in Minny, played a total of 319 times, good for 39th place on the all time list, just behind US Blues and just ahead of Don't Ease Me In (really?). Last played on June 27, 1995 at the Palace of Auburn Hills, MI. SHOW #4: You Win Again Track No. 20 1:12 – 2:21 "You Win Again" is a 1952 song by Hank Williams. In style, the song is a blues ballad and deals with the singer's despair with his partner. The song has been widely covered, including versions by Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, the Grateful Dead, Charley Pride, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones. Hank Williams recorded "You Win Again" on July 11, 1952—one day after his divorce from Audrey Williams was finalized. Like "Cold, Cold Heart," the song was likely inspired by his tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife, "You Win Again" was released as the B-side to "Settin' the Woods on Fire", primarily because up-tempo, danceable numbers were preferable as A-sides for radio play and for the valuable jukebox trade. Nonetheless, "You Win Again" peaked at number ten on the Most Played in C&W Juke Boxes chart, where it remained for a single week. Over a time period of less than one year, the Dead played You Win Again 24 times in concert, the first on November 11, 1971 at the Municipal Auditorium in Austin, TX (this show in L.A. was only the third time it had been played) and the last on September 16, 1972 at The Music Hall in Boston. A version of the song was released on the Europe '72 album (second album side), from their show on May 24, 1972 at The Strand Lyceum in London, one of the final shows on that tour. JGB recorded a version of the song in 1976 during the Reflections album sessions but not played live again. It was briefly revived by The Dead with Dylan in 2003. OUTRO: Going Down The Road Feeling Bad Track No. 23 3:45 – 5:12 "Going Down The Road Feeling Bad" (also known as the "Lonesome Road Blues") is a traditional American folk song, "a white blues of universal appeal and uncertain origin" The song was recorded by many artists through the years. The first known recording is from 1923 by Henry Whitter, an Appalachian singer,[2][3]as "Lonesome Road Blues". The earliest versions of the lyrics are from the perspective of an inmate in prison with the refrain, "I'm down in that jail on my knees" and a reference to eating "corn bread and beans."[4] The song has been recorded by many artists such as Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Skeeter Davis, Elizabeth Cotten, and the Grateful Dead, and the song is featured in To Bonnie from Delaney, "Mountain Jam", Born and Raised World Tour, The Grapes of Wrath, and Lucky Stars.Others who recorded it include Cliff Carlisle (also as "Down in the Jail on My Knees"), Woody Guthrie (also as "Blowin' Down This Road" or "I Ain't Gonna Be Treated This Way"), Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Roy Hall, Elizabeth Cotten and the Grateful Dead, Delaney and Bonnie, Canned Heat and Dillard Chandler. Dead played it 302 times (No. 46 on the most played tunes list just behind a tie between Mama Tried and Terrapin and just ahead of Birdsong). 1st time on October 10, 1970 at Colden Auditorium, part of Queens College in Queens, NY.Last played on July 5, 1985 at the Riverport Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, MO. During the time period of this show it was almost always paired with Not Fade Away (as made famous at the end of the Grateful Dead album). In later years, when Alex and I were regulars on tour, it would show up as a second set tune, usually, but not always after Drums/Space. A very upbeat tune that the band obviously loved playing the crowd loved hearing. For our purposes, a great way to end the show and say goodbye and HAPPY THANKSGIVING.
"Ruby's Groovy Journey: Cannabis, Music, and the Deadhead Show"Larry Mishkin shares his excitement about the birth of his granddaughter, Ruby. He discusses how the song "Ruby Waves" by the band Phish may have inspired her name and how the family is already introducing her to great music. Larry also dives into Grateful Dead, sharing details about a 1979 concert from the Spectrum in Philadelphia and highlighting the song "Jack Straw."Larry then talks about recent Grateful Dead releases and encourages listeners to consider subscribing to annual releases for access to exclusive content. He provides insights into the song "Jack Straw," its lyrics, and the band's performance of it throughout the years. The episode also features the Jerry Garcia Band's song "Rubin and Cherise" and its connection to the love story of Ruby..Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast INTRO: Ruby Waves Phish July 14, 2019 Alpine Valley, East Troy, WI Phish - 7/14/2019 - Ruby Waves - YouTube 0:09 – 1:35 Part of today's show is in honor of my first grandchild, Ruby, born late last month in Georgia. My son Matt is a huge Phish fan and his wife Elena enjoys them too if not quite to the same degree. But they both love this song which may or may not have been the inspiration for their daughter's name. Regardless, Ruby is wonderful and her father is already playing this clip by her bassinet – she lays there and smiles! Phish first played the song on June 18, 2019 at the Budweiser Stage in Toronto. Of the 164 Phish shows since that debut, the band has only performed it a total of 27 times (less than 2% of the Phish shows played since its debut), most recently October 11, 2023 at the Erwin Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State University in Dayton, OH. So not only was seeing this song a rarity, but this version is particularly well known as it is from a legendary show at Alpine Valley a few years ago. This particular version of Ruby Waves runs an incredible 38 minutes and was only one of the many highlights from that show (which featured a huge Olivia's Pool breakout among other big moments). Check out the clip, check out the show, and when you hear Ruby Waves think of little Ruby making her appearance into the world. DeadAlso featuring the Dead from The Spectrum in Philly 44 years ago today. A year of big transition, Jim Marty's first Dead show, and some almost under the radar amazing shows, including this one. An eleven song first set followed up by a four song second set (plus drums and space; who do these guys think they are, Phish?) and strong encore. Here is how it all started SHOW #1: Alabama Getaway Track No. 1 0:10 – 1:35 This is only the second time the Dead played this song in concert, the first being two nights earlier on Nov. 4th at the Providence Civic Center in Rhode Island. Song would first be released six months later (4.28.1980) on Dead's album, Go To Heaven. Ultimately played by the Dead 143 times, with an almost five year gap from 1990 – 1994, Jerry brought it back to the stage for a handful of performances in 1995, including the last one on June 2, 1995 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA. Great cultural references to Alabama's complicated legacy, Bill Bojangles, the Twenty Third Psalm from the Bible and more. Great up-tempo tune usually played as a show opener, although it was known to move around from time to time. Extended this clip to catch the Brent breakout during the jam. Still new to the group Brent was not shy and made his presence known with authority even in the first year. SHOW #2: Jack Straw Track No. 10 3:16 – 4:47 One of the highlights of this show, fantastic version of this crowd pleaser and great jamming tune. Brent again jumping into the mix with his backing vocals and his strong keyboard work filling in the gaps. Written by Bobby and Robert Hunter, was never released on a studio album but was released on Europe '72 album. Originally, Bobby sang all the vocals, but at a show in Paris on May 3, 1972, Bobby and Jerry began trading off vocals on different verses and it stayed that way until the end. The song appeared in both the first and second sets until the band's short hiatus in 1974-1975. After re-forming, the song almost exclusively appeared in the first set. After Brent Mydland joined the band in 1979, the song almost exclusively opened the band's first set. The band also often extended the jam after the second verse after Mydland's joining, often extending the song to over six minutes. Dead and Company have also further extended the song, often adding an abstract opening jam prior to the song's first verse. Bob Weir stated in a 2004 interview that the song's lyrics were partly based on John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men.[2] The song's themes include riding the rails, the Great Depression, and hobo (homeless) camps of the era. Jack Straw is also—perhaps coincidentally—the name of the original plantation owner, who lived controversially with his gay lover, Peter Ochello, in Tennessee Williams's play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Long a staple of live Dead shows, the song was first heard live on October 19, 1971 at Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis (another legendary show due to it being Keith Godchaux's first show with the band AND the large number of breakout tunes including Tennessee Jed, Mexicali Blues, Comes A Time, One More Saturday Night, and Ramble On Rose – continuation and new wrinkles to their Americana style that began a year earlier with the releases of American Beauty and Workingman's Dead and now reflected Keith's newly introduced input from the grand piano). Ultimately played by the Dead a total of 476 times putting it very high up on the list of most played Dead tunes. Last played on July 8, 1995 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Time for more Ruby SHOW #3: Ruben and Cerise Grateful Dead March 17, 1991 Cap Center, Landover, MD Grateful Dead Live at Capitol Centre on 1991-03-17 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive 2:05 – 2:29 Sweet Ruby dressed in Red is one of the main characters in this Garcia/Hunter song that was first released in April as the opening tune on the JBG's only studio album, Cats Under The Stars (Run For The Roses is considered a “studio album”). Although played with some frequency by the Jerry Garcia Band (76 times), the Grateful Dead only played it four times in concert, this clip being their breakout. Last played on June 19, 1991 at Buckeye Lake Music Theater in Thornville, OH. A classic tale of love found and lost set in the Carnival season in New Orleans. Beautiful lyrics for a sad and cautionary tale. Sorry to say I never saw it live by the Dead or JGB. I have seen it since by Phil, JRAD and others. Nice but not close to the same. Back to the Dead SHOW #4: Terrapin Station Track No. 12 8:00 – 9:31 Beautiful Hunter/Garcia epic mulit-part suite with Hunter composing the lyrics during a single sitting one night during a rare Bay Area lightning storm. On the same day, driving across the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge, lead guitarist Jerry Garcia was struck by the idea for a singular melodic line. He turned his car around and hurried home to set it down in notation before it escaped him. Hunter said "When we met the next day, I showed him the words and he said, 'I've got the music.' They dovetailed perfectly and Terrapin edged into this dimension."[10] Hunter based the lyrics for the "Lady with a Fan" section on a traditional English folk song known variously as "The Lady of Carlisle", "The Bold Lieutenant" and "The Lion's Den". The ballad is No. 396 on the Roud Folk Song Index. It is also O 25 on the Laws list, which synopsizes "The lady decides to choose between two brothers who love her by determining which is braver. She tosses her fan into a lion's den and asks them to retrieve it."[11] Hunter, who was also influenced by Sir Walter Scott, had composed "Terrapin Station" in two parts, the second never recorded or performed by the Grateful Dead.Drummer Bill Kreutzmann ironed out the arrangement, explaining "We sat down and mapped it out. I said, 'This is how the song goes.' I showed [Mickey] all the parts that I felt worked really well, he added a couple, and that's what the song is today. We went back into the studio the next night and got it right. With the drum parts worked out, everything else snapped together like puzzle pieces. As the opener of a four song second set, this is a strong version, jammed out, but not too much is a show highlight. Barely two years old (Terrapin Station album released on July 27, 1977, first performed a few months earlier on Feb. 26, 1977 at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, CA) at this point, you can still hear Garcia playing around with the timing of the lyrics. Ultimately played in concert by the Dead 303 times with the last rendition on July 8, 1995 in Chicago. An song for fans of fun tales of all ages, I suspect young Ruby will become quite familiar with this tune over time! This week's Deadpod features another fabulous show from 1973. This week's show comes shortly after the death of Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan on the 8th of February 1973, and is the 2nd night of a three night run at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale NY, on March 16, 1973. Folks this is a massive 14 song first set, and the come out of the gate flying with a high energy 'China>Rider', complete with a great, perhaps the first, 'feelin' groovy' jam in the transition. The new 'Wave That Flag' follows with some nice keyboard work from Keith. A fine version of 'Looks Like Rain' follows, introduced with a nice intro from Phil. There are highlights throughout the rest of this set, including an early version of 'They Love Each Other' but the closing 'Playin' In the Band' is sure to bring some smiles.... For several years, one of my favorite trips when Spring rolled around was to go down to Atlanta when the magnolias were bloomin' to see the boys during Spring tour. While the Omni might not have been the greatest venue, I always had a wonderful time. This week I decided to bring you a show from there that took place back on March 28, 1989. This was has a great trifecta to start, with a wonderful 'Let the Good Times Roll' to open things going into a sparkling 'Franklin's Tower'. Bobby works up a sweat on a hot 'Feel Like a Stranger' before things slow a bit with Jerry's 'Stagger Lee' - a song I don't usually love - but I rather like this version. Bob brings out the Dylan with 'Stuck Inside of Mobile'. 'Ramble on Rose' has that southern ragtime feel to it to fit right in. They close the first set with a fine 'Let It Grow' into a rockin' 'Don't Ease Me In'. This is a very nice recording and I hope you find it enjoyable too.. We head into the new year with a show from the Winter of 1979 - this comes to us from the Nassau Coliseum on January 11, 1979. The first set starts off with a wonderful version of 'Sugaree' - Garcia sets the tone for this set right out of the gate.. some wonderful runs here. 'Me & My Uncle' and 'Big River' follows and the latter, in particular, delivers more Jerry magic. Things slow down a bit with a long 'Peggy-O', and Bobby does a nice 'Cassidy' to follow. 'Friend of the Devil' and the 'New New Minglewood Blues follow'. Donna does a rare version of 'From the Heart of Me', before they break into the crowd favorite 'Ramble on Rose'. The highlight of the set, in my mind, follows with a smoking version of 'Jack Straw'. Despite Weir stepping on Garcia's incredible solo, this one is sure to please. Jerry heads into the break delivering a rocking 'Deal'. Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 1/11/79 - Thursday One Sugaree [13:50] ; Me And My Uncle [2:54] > Big River [6:20] ; Peggy-O [8:59] ; Cassidy [4:58] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:50] ; New Minglewood Blues [5:35] ; From The Heart Of Me [3:50] ; Ramble On Rose [8:01] ; Jack Straw [6:12] > Deal [6:13] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010722.mp3 check out Bobby's ad libbed lyrics in 'Jack Straw'... Stay warm and healthy my friends, and thank you so much for your kind support..
This week we welcome December with a great show from December 13, 1980 at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach California, just a couple months after last week's acoustic set. This first set is quite good all the way through but starts with an excellent trifecta -' Feel Like a Stranger' into a wonderful 'Sugaree' then into 'C C Rider' with some great Garcia slide work. Then Jerry slows things down a bit with a soulful 'To Lay Me Down'. A fine version of 'Minglewood' follows with some unusual and impressive guitar work as well as Brent really going off on the B3. 'Ramble on Rose' is always a favorite, then a nice 'Sailor> Saint'. They close the set with a rockin' 'Deal'. Grateful Dead Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA 12/13/80 - Saturday One Feel Like A Stranger [7:06] > Sugaree [11:28] > C C Rider [8:14] ; To Lay Me Down [9:42] ; New Minglewood Blues [6:39#] ; Ramble On Rose [7:04] ; Lost Sailor [6:06] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:41] > Deal [6:50] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120321.mp3 I hope this finds you healthy and in the holiday spirit. Happy Hanukkah ! thank you for your support of the Deadpod.
When the same show gets requested by two different listeners the same week I pay attention.. and I must say I am quite pleased to be able to present this request on this week's Deadpod. This comes to us from a show played on Sunday, October 28, 1979 at the Cape Cod Coliseum at South Yarmouth MA. You know the old saying about never missing a Sunday show - well this one certainly proves that old adage! It starts out just nuts with a great Mississippi Half-Step .. which Jerry and the boys jam out for over 13 minutes! That however is just the start as they flow into a amazing Franklin's Tower which runs almost another 18 minutes! Listen to the wonderful and unique interplay between Phil and Jerry here, its really lovely. The rest of this set is no sleeper either. Even the more pedestrian tunes, like Mama Tried and Mexicali, are played with a real energy and drive. Ramble on Rose is a favorite of mine here, as is the closing, 10 minute 'Music Never Stopped'.. Grateful Dead Cape Cod Coliseum South Yarmouth, MA 10/28/79 - Sunday One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [13:27] > Franklin's Tower [17:41] ; Mama Tried [2:31] > Mexicali Blues [4:24] ; Althea [7:48] ; Passenger [5:14] ; Ramble On Rose [7:49] ; The Music Never Stopped [9:36] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102221.mp3 thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod! This week I decided to venture where I seldom go - with a show from the fall of 1994. While this first set is quite short, I believe as a whole this is perhaps one of the band's best from this period. This first starts with a very nice 'Jack Straw' and the 'West LA Fadeaway' that follows is also quite good. I'm a sucker for these 'Lazy River Road' versions, even when Jerry flubs them a bit. Bob follows that with an accoustic version of 'El Paso', which he did quite often on this tour. 'Ramble on Rose' is always a big hit in the Garden, and they close this short set with Phil 'singing' 'Box of Rain'. Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 10/14/94 - Friday One Jack Straw [5:44] West L.A. Fadeaway [7:15] Queen Jane Approximately [5:21] Lazy River Road [5:42] El Paso [5:34] Ramble On Rose [7:44] Box Of Rain [4:55] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod100821.mp3 Thank you so much for your kind support of the Deadpod! Be well my friends.
This week we stay on the Continent for a show that took place on October 12, 1981 at the Olympia Halle in Munich, West Germany during the band's Fall European Tour. For the most part this is quite an excellent recording, although it does have a couple patches.. They come out firing on an up-tempo 'Jack Straw', then Garcia delivers a more laid back selection with a pretty 'Candyman'. The 'Little Red Rooster' that follows is one of my favorite versions of this tune they delivered - check it out! Brent is all over these songs, if you are a fan you're going to enjoy this set. Some other highlights include an insane 'Passenger' and the set closing 'China>Rider' .. don't miss this one. Grateful Dead Olympia Halle Munich, West Germany 10/12/81 - Monday One Jack Straw [6:02] ; Candyman [6:33] > Little Red Rooster [8:21] ; Cumberland Blues [5:17] ; Beat It On Down The Line [2:57] ; Ramble On Rose [7:32] ; (1) Mama Tried [2:30] > Mexicali Blues [2:50#] ; Althea [9:12] ; Passenger [5:09] ; China Cat Sunflower [7:46] > I Know You Rider [5:59] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092421.mp3 Thanks so much for your kind support! Country Music legend Wynonna Judd, who is the headliner for the Highway To Hope Benefit Concert, caps off our special series of podcasts featuring the artists performing during the live virtual event on May 16th. The SCF Podcast interview, which was led by podcast host and SCF Director of Philanthropy and Development Shannon Currier, was one of the first media Q&As with Wynonna since the global pandemic. As you will hear, it was an extended conversation that covered a number of interesting topics. While discussing her respect for professional drivers through the interview, Wynonna offered her perspective on being out on the road and away from home, which shares many of the same emotions experienced by truckers behind the wheel. For the interview with Wynonna, Shannon was joined on the podcast by Donna Horton, a member of the Radio Nemo Team. Donna is a long-time friend of Wynonna, and she helped to connect SCF and Shannon to Wynonna's team as SCF began to plan for the Highway to Hope Benefit. In addition to the conversation with Wynonna, this podcast also includes two songs recorded by Wynonna, No One Else On Earth and Ramble On Rose.
I'm going to shuffle the deck a little bit and bring you a real treat, a show from the fall of 1976. This comes to us from September 30, 1976 at Mershon Auditorium at The Ohio State University. This special request from a friend of the Deadpod features a fantastic first set. The opening 'Music Never Stopped' is quite unique - and features some wonderful playing by Garcia in the cresendo leading into a sweet 'Sugaree'. 'Looks Like Rain' has a nice interplay between Bob and Donna, and 'El Paso' has a nice galloping tempo thanks to Phil. The real fireworks come with the fabulous 'Crazy Fingers' that follows.. to me the highlight of the set, although some would argue that the set closing 'Scarlet Begonias' deserves those accolades.. I'll let you decide ;) Grateful Dead Mershon Auditorium - Ohio State University Columbus, OH 9/30/76 - Thursday One The Music Never Stopped [5:56] Sugaree [9:44] New Minglewood Blues [4:30] Ramble On Rose [7:19] Looks Like Rain [6:02] Peggy-O [8:25] El Paso [4:10] Crazy Fingers [15:02] > It's All Over Now [5:14] Scarlet Begonias [10:14] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod051421.mp3
This week we have the first set of a legendary show from April 18, 1982 in Hartford CT. Those of you familiar with either the history of the Grateful Dead or of San Francisco know that April 18, 1906 was the date of the great San Francisco Earthquake, and this show is famous for its legendary 'Earthquake Space'. Since I prefer presenting complete shows, and since this first set is quite good on its own merits, we'll hear it this week, and the second set, complete with the 'earthquake space' next. This one starts with a rocking 'Bertha' into 'Promised Land'. A pretty 'Friend of the Devil' leads into a rather mellow 'CC Rider'. 'Ramble on Rose' is notable for how great Jerry's voice sounds. After the cowboy polka, 'Althea' is a favorite of mine. 'Big Railroad Blues' has Brent really hitting the mark, I think you'll enjoy it, and the 'Let It Grow' is probably the highlight of this set. Grateful Dead Hartford Civic Center Hartford, CT 4/18/82 - Sunday One Bertha > The Promised Land ; Friend Of The Devil > C C Rider ; Ramble On Rose ; Me And My Uncle > Mexicali Blues ; Althea > Looks Like Rain ; Big Railroad Blues ; Let It Grow You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod040921.mp3
Spring has sprung a bit earlier than usual here in the north, and it's a perfect time to break out the sweet, silky sounds of the Grateful Dead from 1977.. Here's a beauty from March 20, 1977 at the Winterland in San Francisco. As usual its marked by the extremely smooth and intricate ensemble playing that characterize the year. The band is clearly paying attention to and responding to each other. I'd argue that every song in this first set has its moments - there's even a fun little Jerry run in El Paso. Deal builds and builds to a rousing climax. Cassidy shows off a beautiful arrangement highlighting every member's contribution to the whole. Peggy-O is slow and sweet, love Keith's piano here and Jerry has some runs I've not heard before. It seems unfair not to single out each of these songs for their beauty..this is a remarkably nice recording as well, but I just want to also point to the stand-alone Scarlet Begonias that ends this first set. Never miss a Sunday show ) Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 3/20/77 - Sunday One New Minglewood Blues [4:46] ; Ramble On Rose [7:35] ; El Paso [4:12] ; Deal [5:32] ; Cassidy [4:29] ; Peggy-O [7:15] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:41] ; Brown Eyed Women [5:18] ; Estimated Prophet [8:01] ; Scarlet Begonias [12:45] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod032621.mp3 Thank you for your kind support of the Deadpod! Happy New Year! From a request from a longtime frirend of the Deadpod - I've decided to celebrate the end of 2020 with this fun and raucous show from NYE 1982. I'll present this one over the next couple weeks and hope can feel and enjoy the fun that the band and everyone in attendance had on this special night 39 years ago. The first set which we'll hear this week is a bit short, but still well played and tight. Garcia's voice is a bit creaky but he makes up for it with some very nice work on the guitar. A long 'C.C. Rider' has Mathew Kelly sitting in, but I believe Brent adds much to this one (and throughout the set). 'Cumberland Blues' is for me the highlight here as Jerry really brings some nice licks. Brent delivers a short but nice 'Far From Me', Weir is forceful as usual on 'Cassidy' and a bit screechy at times on 'Looks Like Rain' but these are fine versions. 'Ramble On Rose' always brings a smile, and a 'Day Job' to end the year seems quite appropriate. Oakland Auditorium Oakland, CA 12/31/82 - Friday One Cold Rain And Snow ; C C Rider ; Cumberland Blues ; Far From Me ; Cassidy ; Ramble On Rose ; Looks Like Rain ; Keep Your Day Job You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod010121.mp3 A word of thanks for your kind support over the holidays and throughout this last, difficult year. I very much appreciate your kindness. May these songs fill the air with much joy and well being this next year! We roll into December with a show from late fall 1990 - this one from McNichols Arena in Denver Colorado on December 13th, 1990. This is a fine, energetic show, and starts off with a very uptempo Jack Straw into Sugaree. 'Wang Dang Doodle' follows to get everyone dancin', then Jer slows it down a touch with 'Friend of the Devil'. Uncle>Big River contain some tasty Garcia tones, and I think the 'Ramble on Rose' that follows is appreciable different without Brent's touch, but still tight. Bobby brings out the 'Memphis Blues Again' and the boys end the set with their penultimate performance of Hornsby's 'Valley Road'. Grateful Dead McNichols Arena Denver, CO 12/13/90 - Thursday One Jack Straw > Sugaree ; Wang Dang Doodle ; Friend Of The Devil ; Me And My Uncle > Big River ; Ramble On Rose ; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again ; Valley Road You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120420.mp3 If you are interested, I featured the previous night of this run back in Nov-Dec 2014.. Stay well and be kind....
Here is an appropriate Dead show for Friday the 13th! This is the second set from the band's performance at the Hofheinz Pavilion at the University of Houston on November 19th, 1972. A fine second set and while the tape has a few imperfections (the quality of the Sugar Mag>GDTRFB is degraded sadly) I think overall it is certainly worth your time.. Why do I say its appropriate for a Friday the 13th? Take a good *long* listen to this Dark Star.. :) I'm going to leave the music speak for itself this week but I do hope you'll enjoy this fine 90 plus minutes of 1972 Grateful Dead. Grateful Dead Hofheinz Pavilion - University of Houston Houston, TX 11/19/72 - Sunday Two - [1:36:00] ; The Promised Land [2:52] ; Ramble On Rose [6:08] ; El Paso [4:05] ; Stella Blue [7:13] ; Jack Straw [4:39] ; Dark Star [30:53] > Weather Report Suite Prelude > Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [8:05] ; Around And Around [4:39] ; Big Railroad Blues [3:48] ; Sugar Magnolia [8:24] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:32] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111320.mp3 thank you so much for listening, and for your kind support.
From Memphis To Muscle Shoals & More. Una semana después, el día 19, llegará Bob's Back Pages: A Night Of Bob Dylan's Songs. J.D. Long Road Out Of Eden. Escuchar audio
We close out October.. and welcome Halloween :) with a great second set from October 21st, 1971 in Chicago. While this may be Keith Godchaux's second night of his tenure with the band, he sure doesn't sound tentative here - especially on his first 'Dark Star'! This one is made even more unusual when the band goes into 'Sittin' On Top of the World' then back into the Star.. (the first Sittin' since 11/5/70).The 'Brown Eyed Women' is only the 3rd time they've played it, and this is the second time for 'Ramble on Rose'.. The band is clearly stretching out and trying those new tunes that will come to perfection in the great shows of 1972. An unusual 'St.Stephen' leads into 'Johnny B.Goode' as a double encore - they'd only play Stephen twice more in '71 before putting it on the shelf until its return in 1976. Grateful Dead Auditorium Theatre Chicago, IL 10/21/71 - Thursday Two Casey Jones ; Me And My Uncle [2:48] ; Dark Star [15:09] > Sittin' On Top Of The World [3:16] > Dark Star [2:03] > Me And Bobby McGee [5:56] ; Brown Eyed Women ; Ramble On Rose [6:06] ; Sugar Magnolia [6:08] Encore Saint Stephen [5:49] > Johnny B. Goode [3:54] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod103020.mp3 Best wishes for a safe and fun Halloween!! thanks so much for your support..
Great set this week - the 2nd set from the band's performance at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco on 10/11/80. Great quality tape - and right off they sound hot .. a wonderful 'Stranger' punctuated with some smoking guitar. Even the Mama Tried>Mexicali has some real smokin' licks. Personally I find the post-Donna 'Passenger' to be one of the best of this period.. really well done. There's nothign shabby here, and the closing Sailor>Saint has some great jamming in it. Grateful Dead Warfield Theatre San Francisco, CA 10/11/80 - Saturday Two Feel Like A Stranger [8:26] ; They Love Each Other [7:07] ; Mama Tried [2:33] > Mexicali Blues [4:16] ; Loser [7:32] ; Passenger [4:44] ; Ramble On Rose [7:14] ; Looks Like Rain [7:21] ; Althea [7:58] ; Lost Sailor [6:32] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:18] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod100920.mp3 Hope you enjoy this.. and thank you so much for your support..
This week the Deadpod presents the second set from the band's performance back on September 23, 1972 at Waterbury CT. Another quite long, very interesting set awaits as the band starts out rockin' with a trifecta of Promised Land>Bertha>Greatest Story to get the place going. After a nice 'Brown-Eyed Women' they break out Chuck Berry's 'Around and Around' for the first time in 105 shows (4/18/71). They follow that breakout with the first rendition of 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' in 156 shows (11/8/70). Perhaps the highlight of this follows with the last 'Crytpical Envelopment' performed until June of 1985. A massive 'Other One' flows out of drums and leads into the post-drum segment which would have made a quite respectable second set of its' own. Just listen to the incredible energy on that 'Sugar Magnolia'! Grateful Dead Palace Theatre Waterbury, CT 9/23/72 - Saturday Two The Promised Land [2:52] > Bertha [5:43] > Greatest Story Ever Told [4:55] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:53] (2) ; Around And Around [4:28] ; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [7:28] ; Cryptical Envelopment [1:59] > Drums [3:25] > The Other One [22:44] > Wharf Rat [9:38] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:17] ; Ramble On Rose [6:27] ; Sugar Magnolia [8:05] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [8:00] > Not Fade Away [5:#34] > One More Saturday Night [4:42] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092520.mp3 Enjoy and thanks for your kind support.
August flies... and we are favored this week with a second set from August 12, 1972 in Sacramento California. While most of the band's performances are quite good from this time, each are unique and this second set contains some very good and unique moments. The recording unfortunately has a short cut in the opening of the first selection, 'Greatest Story Ever Told', but it, and the following 'Ramble On Rose, and 'Beat It On Down The Line' are rocking, and this is quite a fine recording in my opinion. Jerry's guitar has that sweet twangy tone that sounds, to me so western.. A nice 'He's Gone' follows, leading into the real meat of this set. Following a sort 'Drums' Phil thunders us into 'The Other One'. While I've long since given up rating these, I think its safe to say this one is a keeper. This one really gets rolling and after some outstanding extraterritorial exploration leads into an unexpected, but poignant 'Black Peter'. The band returns to 'The Other One' for a short reprise with some wonderful piano work by Keith. They come to a stop before returning to a smokin' 'Truckin'. The set closes with 'Mississipi Half-Step' into 'Sugar Magnolia' (again with a unfortunate cut). 'One More Saturday Night' closes what was surely quite an evening... This week we hit the beach for a most excellent time with the band as they play the Sunday show at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura California on July 22, 1984. This is a fine recording of a very energetic set which I am sure you'll enjoy. We start appropriately enough, with 'Dancin' In the Streets' - a better than average version in my opinion. The boys keep rockin' with 'Bertha'. Weir brings out 'My Brother Esau' - which debuted back in '83 but wouldn't be released until 'In The Dark' in '87. A powerful 'Loser' follows, and its not an exaggeration to claim this is probably the best version of this tune this year, at least. Jerry keeps up the voltage in 'Ramble on Rose', another highlight. Bucket into the infamous 'Keep Your Day Job' follows to close the set.. I must say hearing 'Day Job' again brought a smile to my face. In episode 1, we welcome Grammy-winning musician and producer Eric Krasno. For nearly two decades, Eric Krasno has been an omnipresent figure in popular music. We've heard his virtuosic, innovative guitar playing with Soulive and Lettuce, seen him onstage supporting the likes of the Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer and The Roots, watched him take home multiple Grammy Awards, and benefited from his deft, behind-the-scenes work as a producer and songwriter for everyone from Norah Jones and Tedeschi Trucks Band to 50 Cent and Talib Kweli. Eric tells RJ about his earliest musical memories, how Led Zeppelin was his gateway to discovering funk music, and the real meaning behind the name Lettuce, the band he formed while at Berklee College of Music. They discuss Eric’s development as a producer from a youthful hobby to songwriter for the stars, including “the opportunity of a lifetime” to produce Aaron Neville’s 2016 album Apache with his friend and collaborator Dave Gutter. Eric also traces his evolution as a solo artist and a singer, culminating in the 2019 album Telescope, an ambitious blending of the styles and scenes he’s absorbed along the way. Finally they discuss the recent resurgence of The Grateful Dead’s music, and the importance of mental health support for musicians. The show closes with Eric performing three songs live from his home studio: “Unconditional Love”, “Ramble On Rose,” and “Carry My Name.' My hope is that this podcast, this music, can bring a little joy and light into your life during this dark and scary time... This week we'll hear the second set from the band's performance on March 23, 1972 from the Academy of Music in New York City. While it is not as long as that massive first set from last week, I think it is uniformly good. 'Truckin' starts things off, nice tempo, lots of energy. The 'Ramble on Rose' is great.. Pig follows with 'Two Souls in Communion' and we're reminded what a loss was coming when he passed... 'Mexicali Blues' features some nice flourishes from Jerry, then we have the Dark Star.. unique as all Dark Stars are, certainly jazzy and complex. I've read different reactions to this Star, some positive some not so much.. give it your space and see where it leads.. Out of the Dark Star ... Pig gives us the 'Big Boss Man'.. love it.. they close with Not Fade Away>Goin' Down the Road>Not Fade Away.. Bobby goes hoarse from screaming.... :) what a night.. hope you enjoy it.. This months podcast comes to us from New England during the Fall 1983 Tour. Nineteen Eighty Th-roar is some folks favorite era of the band, and when you find a good show it is easy to see why. This months show is a very good representation of what the band could do during this time period. Cousin Darren from Scottsdale suggested this show, and once I gave it a listen we both decided it would require some deeper vetting... and once we did so, it was an obvious pick to share with you guys out there. Cousin Darren sits in with us for this episode. For our half-time show, "Bob" brought us some really fun JGB from the same era. Good stuff here ladies and gents... Enjoy. Share. Smile. Boy is this one going to eat up my quota! There is almost 2 1/2 hours of smokin' Grateful Dead music in this week's Deadpod, from the second set on 2/23/74 at the Winterland in San Francisco CA. I'm bound to overlook something that you will enjoy in this set, nevertheless I'd call you attention to the wonderful opening set (Row Jimmy through Stella Blue).. as well as the HUGE segment from He's Gone through Eyes of the World.. that 'Other One' is fantastic, including a 'Slipknot' sounding segment.. this recording is excellent for listening to the individual contributions, especially Phil the bombardier here! I would have loved to have been there... can't imagine how everyone felt going out of there after this night of music! The band had its great periods of time, to be sure... and Fall 1973 was certainly one of them. This stellar show is contained on a fantastic recording, always a good combo if you ask me! 'I want to tell you how it's gonna be.....' and let me tell you this second set from November 24, 1972 in Dallas Texas is one rockin' hour + of fine Grateful Dead music. Unlike most of their four other Texas shows during this leg of the fall '72 tour there is no 'Dark Star' or 'Other One' here.. and this second set is notable for being fairly straight-ahead rock and roll. The show really gets moving with a fantastic 'Truckin' .. Jerrry really takes off here, Sugar Magnolia is no slouch either but the uniqueness of this one comes in the fine 'Not Fade Away>Going' Down the Road>Not Fade Away'. Despite Jerry breaking a string, I'm certain you'll enjoy the unique take on this combo here. This month the podcast takes us to the Late Summer 1991 Run that had the band playing 6 shows in 7 nights... and they only repeated one song! Amazing. This is the 4th show of that run, and they are obviously trying hard not to repeat anything and came up with some interesting twists. For half-time, "Bob" brought us in some Bob & Rob from 1991. Good stuff. Hope you guys are enjoyin the ride! Seemed to me that I shouldn't let April slip by without something from 1978 - the band had a very good month that year, so I decided to feature their efforts on April 21st at Rupp Arena in Lexington Kentucky. Some think that this first set starts out a bit slow, personally I disagree. I love the 'Promised Land' opener. Unfortunately the 'Dire Wolf' that follows is is patched with a not-so-great audience version for the first 2:40 of the selection. While 'Mama Tried'>'Mexicali' is not rare, Garcia has some spirited licks and I find it quite enjoyable. The 'Ramble On Rose' is perhaps not the most spirited, but its followed by a quite long 'Funiculi Funicula, A smart 'Passenger' is followed by a lazy 'Row Jimmy', but they flip a switch from her out.. the last 3 songs are cooking! All these three are wonderful, but they are capped by an off the hook version of 'The Music Never Stopped'.. whew! With the recent release of the classic show from 2/26/77 on Dave's Picks #29, I was inspired to bring you this fine recording of the excellent show that took place the following evening, Febuary 27th, 1977. While this is an audience recording, and the vocals are not as upfront as many of us prefer, I think you'll still find that the playing shines through. The band is definitely still 'on' this night, here in the first set they play 'Estimated Prophet' for only the 2nd time and the playing throughout is lovely. I'm particulary fond of the arrangement of 'Music Never Stopped'; afterwards Phil implored Jerry for 'one more' and boy do they respond with an excellent 'Scarlet Begonias'. For a long Labor Day weekend I think this week's Deadpod provides a perfect soundtrack - the second set from the band's smoking performance on August 24th, 1972 at the Berkeley Community Theater in Berkeley CA. Each of these standards are played most excellently. In addition we are treated to a true pinnacle of improvisational excellence with the 'Dark Star>Morning Dew'. I would have thought they'd close out after that but rather than that they rev it back up with a hot 'Sugar Magnolia', 'Ramble on Rose' and 'Greatest Story'. Sing Me Back Home is sweet as always. While they close the set with a 'One More Saturday Night' (on a Thursday) they return with a most excellent 'Uncle John's Band' encore - a song that should have seen that spot more often. Well as we ease out of April it seems like a great idea to bring you s show from 1977... I have always tried to feature a show from that stupendous month of May '77, but all of those have either been featured already or commercially released, so I decided to go with this relatively unknown but excellent show from April 23rd, 1977 in Springfield MA. The show has an easy mellow feel to it, reminiscent of '76 Dead, yet it has the tight harmonies and unexpected dips and turns of those classic May shows. From a fine, flowing 'Sugaree' through the great 'Loser' and 'Row Jimmy' I found lots of favorites in this first set. The highlight however is probably the Scarlet>Fire which closes the set, and marks only the 3rd time they performed 'Fire on the Mountain'. We'll play the second set next week... Hello Friends! I have to tell you, the ol' Professor has not had a great week.. been down with an awful case of the flu since last saturday night, which forced me to cancel a trip I had planned to the great Southwest :( However my week was brightened by a very sweet note and donation from Stephen and Kristi of New York City (who are dealing with their own nasty weather problems this week). Thanks my friends. I'm still running a fever and dealing with some nasty abdominal stuff so I'm afraid I'm going to make this introduction to this week's Deadpod short and sweet.. The first half of this second set is wonderful.. It's always a joy to hear Pig sing 'The Stranger' and the boys are really moving this one down the track so buckle up and enjoy the ride. This week's Deadpod features the beautiful 2nd set from February 9th, 1973 from Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. Plenty of breakouts make this a rare and unusual set, including 'They Love Each Other' , 'Eyes of the World', 'China Doll' and 'Wave that Flag'. Some great exploratory jamming in Eyes marks a unique version that sounds unlike any other played that year. There are a few splices here and there, but I don't think they will effect your enjoyment of this fine show. Wavy Gravy does a brief political talk at the beginning of the set.. This week's Deadpod features a one-set wonder (as it is only the 2nd set that we have a soundboard tape of) of a superb show from December 1st, 1971 from the Boston Music Hall in Boston MA. This is a beautiful recording of the young Dead and I'm quite certain you'll enjoy both the stand alone songs and the insane jamming of 'The Other One'. The ending 'Not Fade Away'>Going Down the Road Feelin' Bad'>'Not Fade Away' is wonderful as well. This week's Deadpod features a rather historic show in the band's history - this was the very first show with Keith Godchaux, on October 19th, 1971 in Minneapolis Minnesota. Not only was this Keith's first show it features the premier of six songs that would all become staples in the band's repertoire, Tennessee Jed, Jack Straw, Mexicali Blues, Comes a Time, One More Saturday Night and Ramble On Rose. There's plenty of energy in this set, and the new tunes and the addition of Keith mark a turning point in the band's trajectory, as the sound begins its transition to the characteristic sound of 1972. Its also a nice coincidence that I received an email this week from the author of a new blog, all about 'Comes A Time' .. it has a nice writeup about this show as well as other great versions. You can find it here: https://gotanemptycup.wordpress.com/, check it out! Here we are already at the end of June.. summer is flying by and for alot of people this is the start of a big 4th of July celebration.. I decided to bring you what I consider a very good show from the summer solstice of 1989 - June 21st, 1989 from the Shoreline Ampitheater. This was originally offered as a Pay Per View broadcast so some of you may have watched it. Despite playing this first set in a hot, sunny afternoon (to accommodate East Coast viewers), I think they put on a fine performance here of first set standards.. We're going to welcome in the month of February with the band's performance from February 1st, 1978 at the Uptown Theater in Chicago. I believe you'l enjoy this excellent recording of the start of a wonderful swing through the midwest in the winter of 1978. This first set starts with a smokin' 'Jack Straw', then moves through a longish 'Friend of the Devil'. 'Mama Tried' and 'Me & My Uncle' follow then a great 'Ramble on Rose'. Following 'Cassidy' the tape is missing the 'Sunrise' that followed, but we do have the spirited 'Sugaree' which closed the first set. I've decided to follow that with an excellent 'Candyman' which was recorded a few days following up in Milwaukee. Sadly not all of that gig, or of several of these performances during the first week of February '78, are available in soundboard format (although parts of several performances were 'picked' to be included in an excellent, now out-of-print Dick's Picks' 18). This week the Deadpod presents the second set of the band's performance from the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden on December 7th, 1971. A fine performance and recording here.. not one marked by any long jams.. nevertheless a great representation of the band as it heads into one of their peak years - 1972. Strong performances by Pigpen - especially on 'Smokestack Lightnin'.. I'm willing to bet you'll dig the ending of this set as well :) Grateful Dead Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden New York, NY 12/7/71 - Tuesday Two Sugar Magnolia ; Ramble On Rose ; Big Boss Man ; Mexicali Blues ; Brown Eyed Women ; Me And My Uncle ; Smokestack Lightnin' ; Deal ; Truckin' ; Not Fade Away -> Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad -> Not Fade Away Encore One More Saturday Night You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod121616.mp3 My thanks to my kind friends whose donations have kept the Deadpod alive this year!! We bid adieu to Summer this week with perhaps the best GD show of 1993.. this one is from Madison Square Garden, and took place 23 years ago on September 22nd, 1993. The show marked the first of two appearances of jazz saxophonist David Murray with the boys - he sits in during the first set on a wonderful 'Bird song' and throughout the 2nd set. One of my listeners recently informed me that I had never featured a show from this year on the Deadpod and asked that I do so. I can't think of a better show or time to do so than this one. I think the first set in general is quite well-played, and snappy, especially for this era. The Help->Slip->Frank is uptempo and alot of fun to listen to. Garcia is on point in the Minglewood that follows, and really energizes the song. Ramble On Rose follows, then a particularly good Masterpiece. The highlight of the first set is clearly the aforementioned 'Bird Song' with Mr. Murray. The band allows him to create an unusual solo yet weaves it into the tempo of the song allowing them to show that even at this late date, and with Vince and not Hornsby, they are capable of some great jamming. Madison Square Garden, New York, NY (Wednesday, 9/22/93) Help on the Way -> Slipknot -> Franklin's Tower Minglewood Blues Ramble on Rose Masterpiece Birdsong You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092316.mp3 I hope you'll consider supporting the Deadpod, as it is through the kind donations of my listeners that I am able to publish it each week. Happy Autumn!
This week's Deadpod features set 2 from the Dead's performance at the Easttown Theater in Detroit Michgan back on October 24th, 1971. A fine recording, this set starts with a nice Truckin', especially enjoyable is the jam just before the last verse. What sounds odd here is that the song simply stops... They take up 'Ramble On Rose'. It being only the 5th time they had played the song, the phrasing and even some of the lyrics are still being developed.. It is quite interesting to hear. Mexicali Blues follows (following an unusually loquacious introduction), this is a pleasure for me to hear. The Dark Star follows, and what is interesting to me, aside from the inherent originality of the jamming, is how the piece shows its development here from its earlier, more primal performances, towards where it will develop during the European tour to follow next year. As was their wont during this time, 'Me & Bobby McGee' follows, perhaps not the smoothest version ever, but still enjoyable. The old 'yellow dog' story gets pulled out afterwards..before we're treated to a 'Cumberland Blues' and one of the final 'St. Stephen's played until the band brought it back in 1976. Johnny B. Goode once again ends a fine performance.. A quintessential 1972 Grateful Dead second set is on the docket for this week's Deadpod. This set from July 26th, 1972, at Portland's Paramont Theater clocks in at a little over two hours.. It features a number of wonderful highlights, including one of the last performances of 'You Win Again', and early 'He's Gone', and to top it all off, a 30 minute+ Dark Star. While this Dark Star is clearly the highlight of the set, there are stunning performances throughout - capped off by a smoking hot 'Not Fade Away->Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad->Not Fade Away'.. don't miss it!! This week I decided to bring you a relatively unknown but very nice sounding show from the spring of 1982. This is from the University of California at Davis on Sunday, March 17th, 1982. The boys come out and Bobby announces that they forgot something last night and they proceed to play 'One More Saturday Night' as the opener. A very nice Sugaree follows, then after an Uncle->Mexicali, a very solid 'Bird Song'. The band is tight here in the first set and I really enjoy the rocking energy of this period of 1982. Ramble On Rose, Althea, and a great Let It Grow are among the highlights of this excellent first set. Grateful Dead Recreation Hall - University of California Davis, CA 3/14/82 - Sunday One One More Saturday Night > Sugaree ; Me And My Uncle > Mexicali Blues ; Bird Song > Little Red Rooster ; Ramble On Rose ; Looks Like Rain ; Althea ; Let It Grow You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031816.mp3 Thanks for you kind support of the Deadpod!!! let love reign!
Let''s roll into March with a really excellent show from the Spring of 1981. This one comes to us from New York City, March 9th, 1981 Madison Square Garden. From start to finish this is a most excellent show, one of the best in the earlier Brett years. Here in the first set all the songs are tight and well-played. I particularly enjoy the 'Althea' and 'Bird Song' but we are treated to a most welcome 'Deep Elem Blues' and an unusual 'Ramble On Rose -> El Paso'.. one of those unusual combinations the band was experimenting with this year. Next week we'll hear the marvelous second set from this beauty... Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 3/9/81 One Feel Like A Stranger [8:10] ; Althea [7:56] ; C C Rider [7:30] ; Ramble On Rose [7:46] > El Paso [4:53] ; Deep Elem Blues [6:23] ; Beat It On Down The Line [3:18] ; Bird Song [10:55] ; New Minglewood Blues [6:52] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030416.mp3 My thanks to those of you whose contributions keep the Deadpod available! Keep on Truckin'...
Yikes! Friday the 13th! but not only is it Friday the 13th it is ODD day! - 11/13/15 :) I decided such an auspicious occasion deserved an unusual show and I think this one fits the bill. It features *three* songs that would never be played by the band again - one in this first set and the other two in the second set that we'll hear next week. This is from November 21st, 1985 at the Kaiser in Oakland CA. The show beings with a song that hasn't been played in over 15 years - 'Big Boy Pete'.. they then move into a fun 'Dire Wolf'.. 'Little Red Rooster' features some great Hammond organ from Brett. 'Brown-Eyed Women' follows, always a favorite and in the Uncle->Mexicali that follows Jerry does some fine pickin'.. The set closes with a Ramble on Rose->Looks Like Rain->Might As Well.. It is not a very long first set, nevertheless I hope you enjoy it! Next week we'll listen to the second set with *two* songs that receive their final performance... Grateful Dead Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center Oakland, CA 11/21/85 - Thursday One Big Boy Pete ; Dire Wolf ; Little Red Rooster ; Brown Eyed Women ; Me And My Uncle > Mexicali Blues ; Ramble On Rose ; Looks Like Rain > Might As Well You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod111315.mp3 Be safe, be kind, and thank You my friends for allowing me the pleasure of bringing these tunes to you each week..
This week's Deadpod is the result of a request from one of my long time listeners' who reported that his wife had one of those annoying incidents where some lout dumped a beer on her during this, her very first Grateful Dead show and nevertheless remained tolerant enough to accompany him to yet another Dead show 15 years later where the same thing happened to the poor lady! Despite all that this is a great show, and I'm happy to bring it to you this week, this comes from Falls Church NY from May 8th, 1980. It opens with a rockin' Alabama Getaway, and shows that the boys are ready to rock on this night! Other highlights for me include a fine 'High Time' and a great version of 'Lazy Lightnin'->Supplication'.. I'll be playing the second set of this show next week.. Grateful Dead Glens Falls Civic Center Glens Falls, NY 5/8/80 - Thursday Set One Alabama Getaway [4:21] > The Promised Land [4:10] ; Friend Of The Devil [9:15] ; Mama Tried [2:28] > Mexicali Blues [4:11] ; High Time [8:06] ; Lazy Lightnin' [3:54] > Supplication [7:06] ; Ramble On Rose [7:35] ; Lost Sailor [6:09] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:07] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081415.mp3
A classic second set from the great year of 1971 on this week's Deadpod. This one features a massive Other One, an early look at Keith who was playing with the boys without Pigpen on this night and a very well played Goin' Down the Road Feelin Bad->NFA->GDTRFB sandwich.. definitely a favorite! Phil is all over this massive Other One as well, and I think this is a good choice to warm those bone on a cold Winter's eve... Grateful Dead Allen Theatre Cleveland, OH 10/29/71 - Friday Two - [66:24] [66:24] ; Cryptical Envelopment [1:51] > Drums [0:23] > The Other One [20:16] > Me And My Uncle [2:54] > The Other One [2:58] > Cryptical Envelopment [1:39] > Deal [4:19] ; Sugar Magnolia [5:55] ; Ramble On Rose [5:50] ; Not Fade Away [4:40] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [6:32] > Not Fade Away [2:42] ; One More Saturday Night [4:02] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011714.mp3 Thanks so very much for your support of the Deadpod! I very much appreciate it!
This week's Deadpod had been on my list of requested shows for quite some time, and I'm really glad to have gotten to it this week. It comes from the Fall of 1983, a year that I think is often underestimated among Deadheads as I feel there are some very good shows that took place that year, and this is clearly one of them. This week we'll listen to the very good and unique first set. It opens with a wonderful version of 'The Music Never Stops' that makes me wonder why they didn't use this number as an opener more often. Loser and CC Rider follow, both good versions, but they really get rockin' on the Cumberland Blues that comes next. True, the vocals aren't all that pristine, but they sure are having fun and Jerry is really going strong. A nice Cassidy follows, then a fun Ramble On Rose (even if I'm not a huge fan of Healy playing with the vocals)..who doesn't love this song? Next Weir shadowboxes the Apocalypse, but they end the set with a rousing Big Railroad Blues into a really well done Promised Land.. great first set.. Grateful Dead October 21, 1983 The Worcester Centrum Worcester, MA. --Set 1-- The Music Never Stopped Loser CC Rider Cumberland Blues Cassidy Ramble on Rose My Brother Esau Big Railroad Blues -> The Promised Land You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092713.mp3 My thanks for listening, and for supporting the Deadpod.. we couldn't be here without you!
This week I decided to play a show that I have some fond memories of - July 6th, 1990 at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville KY. I have vivid memories of the trip to this show (following the blistering 4th of July show in Kansas) as well as walking through this group of fundamentalists on my way to the venue (they were all carrying brooms and Bibles to sweep out Satan I guess).. the weather was HOT and they cut off beer sales right when the boys went on stage.. but still a great night of music.. The first set has a wonderful Sugaree .. although really all of these 1st set songs are well played.. Its just a fine show from a great tour - the Summer of 1990. Grateful Dead Date: 7/6/90 - Friday Location: Cardinal Stadium - Louisville, KY Set One:Hell In A Bucket > Sugaree ; Easy To Love You ; Peggy-O ; Desolation Row ; West L.A. Of course I don't know how it has been where you are... but the winter up here in Michigan has been pretty mild so far (now I've jinked myself :) Still.. I didn't think a little pick-me-up would be a bad idea.. this show is a request from one of my listeners and I thought a little Springtime Dead would be just the thing for the after-holidays blues.. Hope you enjoy this one.. I'm always a fan of 'Here Comes Sunshine' and actually have enjoyed Phil's renditions of 'Broken Arrow'.. I hope you enjoy this one as well.. next week's 2nd set features a wonderful Playin'.. This week's Deadpod has two unusual occurances - first a show from 1986 - a year I usually find quite depressing and an audience tape to boot! I think when you give this show a listen you'll understand why I decided to ignore my prejudices and post this classic show! This one starts with a smokin' Alabama Getaway into Greatest Story.. there's a *fine* Dire Wolf and I was always a fan of Brother Esau.. the rest of the set is very well played as well, and closes with the second Box of Rain in a week after having not been played since '73.. the crowd goes predictably wild.. :)I hope you enjoy the performance..Grateful Deadthe Spectrum, Philadelphia PA3/24/86 MondayAlabama Getaway [4:33] > Greatest Story Ever Told [4:00] ; Dire Wolf [3:06] ; Little Red Rooster [7:57] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:57] ; My Brother Esau [4:36] ; Ramble On Rose [6:52] ; El Paso [5:11] ; Box Of Rain [4:59]You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod121809.mp3Have a great week - as always many thanks for your kind support !

This week, the conclusion of their powerful set from 7/31/74. What a time to be a Deadhead! This show featured 3 powerful sets - this week we'll listen to the end of set 2, and all of set 3.. There's plenty of wonderful jamming and singing on these songs - I especially love the 'Ramble on Rose' and 'To Lay Me Down' - and be sure to listen to the 'Mind Left Body jam' after 'Truckin' - great stuff!! Happy Birthday Jerry!I decided against the idea of doing a Jerry "tribute" - heck every Deadpod is a tribute to the virtuosity and spirit of Garcia - he should still be with us - he'd only be 66 today...........this week I'm playing set 2 of 9/2/79 - Enjoy the fabulous Weather Report Suite and Garcia's intense jam out of that.. I don't need to tell you to listen to the Stella Blue.. :) Grateful Dead Augusta Civic Center Augusta, ME 9/2/79 - Sunday Samson And Delilah [7:29] ; Ramble On Rose [8:13] ; Terrapin Station [12:58] > Let It Grow [11:50] > Jam (1) [11:#26] > Drums [5:25] > Space [4:28] > Stella Blue [10:53] > Truckin' (2) [8:17] > Around And Around [7:29#]You can listen to the Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod080108.mp3Be well during these 'days between' ....
This week I have an excellent show from 1989 for your listening pleasure - we'll be hearing the first part of August 6th, 1989 from Cal Expo. The show starts with a 'Let the Good Times Roll' that the band ends perfectly and rolls into 'Feel Like a Stranger' and then Franklin's Tower.. A very interesting and well played start to a wonderful show. I really enjoy this first part of the show - highlighted by Garcia's singing on Ramble on Rose and a great version of Birdsong. I've included the magnificent Scarlet->Fire that opens the 2nd set.. This week we have a new release of a classic Dead show, this one from the start of the summer of 1973. This week we'll listen to the first set, which as you can see from the setlist below contains plenty of surprises for a first set! Besides the very unusual opening Morning Dew, it contains the last version of 'Wave that Flag' before this song morphs into US Blues. I think you'll agree that Garcia is in fine voice on this show and I'm confident you'll enjoy yourself as you listen! This week we continue with this marvelous show from May 25th, 1972 in London. We get the last two songs of the first set - including a great Brokedown Palace, then we get what exists of the second set. I'm a sucker for a great Pigpen tune and Chinatown Shuffle sure sounds good to me... Lucky for all of us there's a fabulous Uncle John's->Wharf Rat->Dark Star that survived in tact.. This week I decided to bring you an excellent show from a very high energy summer tour, that of 1985.. Imaginative setlists made up for what often seemed a frantic pace during this summer tour, and some of the music was very well played, as is evident I think in this week's show.. By the way I'll be away next week, so I'm posting *two* podcasts this week.. be sure and pick them both up! One of my wonderful listeners wrote me to request this week's show and seeing as it is from the same great year for Dead music as the recently released Three from the Vault, I thought it would be a great listen for this week's deadpod. While I only have a portion of the show in good quality soundboard, I thought it was certainly worth sharing what I have. Its a hugely fun read, and all you have to do to have a chance to win your copy is to send me an email at: j.henrikson@gmail.comI'll pick the winners at random next week! More information on The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics can be found here.
I had a different show in mind until I discovered that this show had become available - this is one of the greatest shows of one of the greatest years in the history of the Grateful Dead..
