This week we have a fine second set from July 29th, 1988 to entertain us as we reflect on how fortunate we were to have Jerry Garcia share his talents with us. This is a great example of a late 80s second set, with an unusual China Cat->Crazy Fingers->I Know You Rider to open the set. This is followed by a Playin' in the Band which really gets out there - Barlow remarked that this one would separate the true believers from those who weren't:) I also just love the rare but wonderful 'Believe It Or Not' a song that fits the ballad position perfect and was all too rare.. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do, and while its been 16 years since we lost Jerry what he left us to enjoy is such a treasure that I can only rejoice in his life.. thanks for sharing the ride. This week's show is the result of one of those wierd acts of synchronicity that led me to believe that it was meant to be... I had been thinking that it was about time to feature a show from 1985. I was thinking of which show to play and had seriously considered the show from Hershey PA on 6/28/85.. While this is a fun show, it has some problems - the weather was bad, the playing a bit sloppy even for 85 standards.. As I had pretty much concluded I wouldn't play this show I got a great email from a listener to the Deadpod who asked about the show that I am playing this week, from Merriweather Post Pavilion on 7/1/85. He told me about how much fun this show was and how he'd never really heard a great tape of it. While the tape I am playing tonight does suffer from a few anomalies, over all its a pretty good tape, and it captures a great time in GD history. This was the last time the band was able to play at this venue - the pressures and increasing popularity made it impossible. I think you'll enjoy this performance. The Dancin' opener is real fun, and the Dupree's is a highlight. Bobby does a fine job on the Let It Grow and admit it, its fun to hear Day Job once in awhile :) Next week we'll listen to the monster second set, but I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.. This Friday the 13th we're in for a real treat as we get to enjoy the second set of the Grateful Dead's performance at the Boston Gardens on May the 7th, 1977. The second set opens with a splendid Terrapin Station into Sampson, and while the entire set is quite good, what really sends me over the top is the fabulous Wheel->Wharf Rat.. one for the ages to be sure.. This week we get to hear the second set from the "comeback" show that the Dead played on 12/15/86 in Oakland.. I think this is quite a good show - not only is it the first time they performed "Black Muddy River" but the Playin' Sandwich - and the Terrapin in particular that is in the middle - is *very* tasty.. This week we really hit the climax of this show from July 18th, 1972 - the Dark Star ->Comes a Time.. this is fabulous stuff, in my opinion.. and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I've read that Dylan was backstage at this show and that it was the first time he met Garcia - who knows ;) at any rate the group consciousness is clearly evident here and flows from the Star and Comes a Time into that rare 3rd set... A nice fat summer show that marks its anniversary this weekend is up for this week's Deadpod.. This comes to us from Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City NJ, and took place on July 18th, 1972. We'll listen to most of the first set this week - this is a wonderful show, and while Pigpen isn't there (he was sick we're told).. it marks one of the first big stadium shows and I think the Dead did it up right... I especially enjoy the tempo on the China Cat (a bit slower than you're used to hearing.. ) and of course the wonderful Bird Song, Sugaree and Loser.. besides we get a Stella Blue in set 1! Hello Friends! this week we'll listen to the second set of this fine show from the beginning of the famous Spring of 1977 tour, in Philadelphia PA. This starts with a very nice Scarlet->Fire, a very new combination at the time, and Jerry does an excellent job jamming out on this one. It's followed by a wonderful Samson & Delilah - love the way Bob phrases this one, then a personal favorite, Must have Been the Roses. An unusual Dancin->Got My Mojo Workin'->Dancin' leads into the Wheel-Terrapin combo which closes this gem. This may not be the very best show of this tour, but it is a great listen and I hope you enjoy it!4/22/77 - Grateful DeadThe Spectrum - Philadelphia, PASet 2:Scarlet Begonias ->Fire On The Mountain ->Estimated Prophet ->Eyes Of The World ->Never Trust A Woman ->Drums ->Space ->Not Fade Away ->Stella Blue ->One More Saturday NightEncore:U.S. BluesYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod043010.mp3Thanks for listening and of course, for your kind support of the Deadpod!
This week we'll listen to the rest of set 1 of this classic Dead show from 1982, The Scope in Norfolk VA. In addition to an outstanding Peggy-O, the highlight of this week's show for me, is the outstanding Scarlet->Fire - check out Bobby who is really "ON" during the transition jam... I think its quite worthwhile...Grateful Dead - April 3, 1982Scope - Norfolk, VABig RiverPeggy-O ->C C RiderBird SongIt's All Over NowAlthea ->Let It GrowScarlet Begonias ->Fire On The MountainYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod040910.mp3Thanks for picking us up and as always for your kind support of the Deadpod...
This week we will hear the rest of Grateful Dead's performance at the Scope in Norfolk, VA, on April 3rd, 1982. After that interesting Scarlet->Fire we heard to close last week's Deadpod, the band goes into a fairly long and jammy Estimated, then a nice Eyes into Brent's "Never Trust A Woman" - while this may not have been your favorite back in the day, I admit I really enjoy listening to Brent now.. after the drums/space, the band goes into a nice NFA->Stella Blue.. an always welcome US Blues encore rounds out an enjoyable show..Grateful Dead - April 3, 1982Scope - Norfolk, VAEyes Of The World ->Never Trust A Woman ->Drums ->Space ->Not Fade Away ->Stella Blue ->One More Saturday NightEncore:U.S. BluesYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod041610.mp3Thanks for listening - and if you happen to be getting some dough back from Uncle Sam, you can always share a little with the Deadpod by clicking our 'Donate' button on the top of the page ;)
Hello Friends! This week more from the wonderful show that took place on March 5th 1972 at Winterland - this second set features a great Pigpen Good Lovin' and a wonderful Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad-Not Fade Away combo.. Happy New Year!I hope you have a wonderful New Year!!!Today I decided that I would finish playing the excellent 2nd set from 3/24/86 that I started 2 weeks ago, rather than bring you a New Year's Eve show - in my opinion this is a fine second set that I'm sure you will enjoy!! It contains the very last Lost Sailor->Saint of Circumstance, and an outstanding Morning Dew - I know, there's no Sugar Magnolia, but the Midnight Hour Encore is a keeper!Grateful Dead March 24, 1986 The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PAMississippi Half Step>Women Are SmarterHigh Time*Lost Sailor >Saint Of Circumstance>Drumz>Space>Morning DewCrowd and TuningEncore: Midnight HourYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod010110.mp3Thanks for picking us up this week and for your kind support during 2009 - I'm hoping we can keep on rolling in 2010!
As I'm sure you know, this weekend marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock..of course the Grateful Dead played there - in fact they were one of the headliners - yet they thought so little of their performance there that they never had anything good to say about it..Whether the Dead's performance was any worse than any number of shows is an open question, yet the significance of the event for the culture Zeitgeist is beyond question.. We start this week's Deadpod with a discussion with author Pete Fornatale, whose new book Back to the Garden, The Story of Woodstock presents an oral history of this amazing event..We then listen to two songs from the Dead's performance that night -High Time and Lovelight, the latter where the band is joined by a very high Ken Babbs...Hope you enjoy the show..Grateful Dead8-16-69Max Yasgur's Farm,Bethel, New YorkHigh TimeLovelightYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod081409.mp3Thanks for your support, my friends!

This week would have marked the 56th Birthday of Brent Mydland - so I decided to play something from the late 80s- a period where I really enjoy Brent's contributions. While I only have the second set of this show, I think you'll agree that it's well worth your time. This show features a wonderful pre-Drums seven song segment that starts with a rousing China-Rider, then goes into a rare Stranger->Comes a Time sequeway. Always a favorite, the Comes A Time is blusey and very well played. The band then drives into Estimated into a wonderful He's Gone and a very unexpected Uncle John's Band before a short Drums and Space. The rest of the show is equally well-played - then they pull out a rare double encore to confirm they had as much fun as we do listening. This week I'm bringing you a show that really showcases, I think, what Brent Mydland brought to the band - in honor of the 18th anniversary of his last show with the Grateful Dead which occurred this week. This show, 9/2/79, is one of those Fall '79 shows where Brent really was out front and his playing was so spirited that I'm sure he inspired everyone else.. Somehow the month of May slipped by without my having posted something from that unbelievable month in GD history. I'm going to make up for that this week and next with this fat show from the GD archives. This week the conclusion of Bruce Hornsby's first show as a member of the band, 9/15/90 at Madison Square Garden. I think you'll especially enjoy the first half of this set which I find exceptionally well-played and tight throughout. You'll also want to listen to the only post-Brent 'Gimme Some Lovin' with Hornsby - very tasty stuff. The crowd really feeds the band on this one and its obvious throughout. This week we get to savor a truly outstanding audience recording of one of the best shows of the early 1980s - October 10th, 1982 at the Frost Ampitheater in Palo Alto CA.The band comes charging out right from the gate, with of all things, a mad "Minglewood Blues" that will blow you away. Brent really shines on the 'Far From Me' a little later in the first set, and the China-Rider is exquisite. However this version really stands up and I hope you enjoy it.. thanks!!!
This week we'll listen to the remainder of the Dead's performance at Cal Expo, August 6th, 1989. The rest of this second set is a pleasure to listen to - highlighted by a wonderful 'Other One'. This week I'd had a request for some '68 Dead, and just happened to have just gotten this remastered beauty. This is quite an amazing recording for a 40 year old show, even more amazing is how accomplished the band sounds when I think of how young they were. I think the power of this music, especially in the second set, is really amazing.. First off a sincere thank you to all of you who passed along your warm and kind get well wishes to me this week. I was in the hospital because I had an aneurysm in my leg that blocked the blood flow pretty completely. They did a vein graft in there and while I'm still pretty gimpy, at least I'm not in the hospital so I'm thankful for that. I wanted to get a show up this week, and I think you'll enjoy this one, which was just recently released in a complete form...Grateful Dead Cincinnati Gardens Cincinnati, OHDate 12/4/73 - Tuesday One Johnny B. This week I decided to bring you an excellent show from a very high energy summer tour, that of 1985.. Imaginative setlists made up for what often seemed a frantic pace during this summer tour, and some of the music was very well played, as is evident I think in this week's show.. By the way I'll be away next week, so I'm posting *two* podcasts this week.. be sure and pick them both up! This week's Deadpod features a wonderful show from May of 1970.. While recordings from this great year of performances are much too rare we have the good fortune of listening to both the first acoustic set and part of the third, electric set. I just love listening to this primal, energetic, engaging Dead.. I hope you do as well..Grateful Dead - 5/1/70 - FridayAlfred State College - Alfred, NYOne: The Race Is On [2:38] ; Wake Up Little Susie [2:41] % New Speedway Boogie [8:00] ; [2:19] ; Cold Jordan [2:35] ; [0:23] ; Uncle John's Band [6:02] ; [0:08]Three [1:00:05 +] Drums [0:14] > Not Fade Away [8:16] ; [1:15] ; Hard To Handle [6:37] ; [1:21] ; Cryptical Envelopment [2:05] > Drums [2:06] > The Other One [0:16# + #9:28] > Cryptical Envelopment [7:47] ; [0:20] ; High Time [6:53] ; [0:17] % Turn On Your Lovelight [16:53]As always you can listen to the Deadpod here:http://www.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod060107.mp3Thanks so much for your support!!
I hope all of you have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend! This week I'm bringing you a top-notch show from 1991. This particular show was played without Hornsby, which allows Vince's contributions to more clearly stand out. Listen to the great transition into All Along the Watchtower in particular..
