I think this week's Deadpod brings March in both as a lion and a lamb = this first set from Cleveland on March 3, 1981 has some great rockin' tunes and some sweet ballads to please the most discerning Deadhead. Don't be put off by the start of 'Feel Like a Stranger' - the audience patch only lasts for a short bit - the rest of this tape is a fine sounding soundboard in which you can hear the interplay between the members most clearly. A sweet 'Peggy O' follows then a fine 'Me & My Uncle' into 'Big River' highlighted by some nice Garcia work. That continues in the 'Bird Song' that follows.. and leads into 'Looks Like Rain' -this one builds to a nice crescendo. The rockin' returns with a great 'Big Railroad Blues' - nice work here by Brent. A long 'Little Red Rooster' follows.. Brent adds some nice B3 work here. The set closing 'Deal' ramps things back up properly.. He reminisces about the Michigan men's basketball team's 1989 championship and the Grateful Dead's subsequent concerts in Ann Arbor. The podcast features excerpts from the Grateful Dead's performances and shares anecdotes, including a story about Jerry Garcia and Bobby Weir getting stuck in an Ann Arbor celebration after a national championship win, highlighting the connection between the Grateful Dead and Michigan celebrations. Holly and the Crickets recorded the song in Clovis, New Mexico, on May 27, 1957, the same day the song "Everyday" was recorded.[1] The rhythmic pattern of "Not Fade Away" is a variant of the Bo Diddley beat, with the second stress occurring on the second rather than third beat of the first measure, which was an update of the "hambone" rhythm, or patted juba from West Africa. Jerry Allison, the drummer for the Crickets, pounded out the beat on a cardboard box.[3] Allison, Holly's best friend, wrote some of the lyrics, though his name never appeared in the songwriting credits. Joe Mauldin played the double bass on this recording. It is likely that the backing vocalists were Holly, Allison, and Niki Sullivan, but this is not known for certain.[1]"Not Fade Away" was originally released as the B-side of the hit single "Oh, Boy!" and was included on the album The "Chirping" Crickets (1957). The Crickets' recording never charted as a single. In 2004, this song was ranked number 107 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time"Covered by: Rolling Stones (1964, their first big hit) The Rolling Stones' version of "Not Fade Away" was one of their first hits. Recorded in January 1964 and released by Decca Records on February 21, 1964, with "Little by Little" as the B-side, it was their first Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom, reaching number three.[5]London Records released the song in the US on March 6, 1964, as the band's first single there, with "I Wanna Be Your Man" as the B-side.[6] The single reached number 48 on the U.S. BillboardHot 100 singles chart. Every person has a story to tell and the same is true for organizations founded by local leaders to tackle inequities in their communities. In Power Station's first episode of 2024, the remarkable Lynn French shares both her own origin story and that of Hope and a Home, the changemaking nonprofit she leads. Her personal journey started in segregated Washington, DC where she grew up in a family of educators and civil rights activists who embraced the ethos of standing up for what is right. During her tenure in city government, Lynn pushed bureaucratic boundaries to bring equitable community development to Washington DC. She drafted the Homestead Preservation Act, allowing nonprofits to reclaim abandoned homes for families locked out of the housing market. When she retired from government, she was asked to lead Home and a Home, a nonprofit that emerged from the closure of Junior Village, an orphanage that systemically abused vulnerable children and families. Now Lynn French strengthens families by providing stable housing and multi-generational training, education, and support. These families, who may be your neighbors, are now thriving, and they have an important story of their own.

My understanding is that it was raining hard most of this show but that did not stop the band, and Phil in particular, from smoking up the place with a great show. A nice 'Good Times' opens things up, but the band really gets going on a strong 'Bertha'. Brett shines as always on a great 'Just A Little Light' my favorite of his songs. Hard to believe its been 33 years since we lost him :( Other highlights include a fine 'Stagger Lee' and a great 'Cassidy' - listen to the interplay here between Garcia and Lesh. Jerry really shines on 'Tennesse Jed' and the band puts together a fine 'Music Never Stopped' to head into the break.. Grateful Dead Robert F. This Labor Day weekend the Deadpod brings you the 2nd set from the band's performance at the Shoreline Amphitheater on August 18, 1991. There's alot of joy in this set, I think, as the band seems to be enjoying themselves throughout. A fine 'Deal' opens things up - Hornsby is evident here and throughout. The band delivers a topnotch version of 'Samson and Delilah' to follow. A somewhat sloppy 'Mississippi Half-Step' leads into a rather funky 'Feel Like a Stranger'. Out of the Rhythm Devils we get a favorite of mine, 'China Doll', then the band closes with a rocking trifecta of 'Goin' Down the Road', 'Throwin' Stones' and 'Not Fade Away'. One of the highlights is the perfectly executed 'Brokedown Palace' encore. This week we welcome December with a great show from December 13, 1980 at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach California, just a couple months after last week's acoustic set. This first set is quite good all the way through but starts with an excellent trifecta -' Feel Like a Stranger' into a wonderful 'Sugaree' then into 'C C Rider' with some great Garcia slide work. Then Jerry slows things down a bit with a soulful 'To Lay Me Down'. A fine version of 'Minglewood' follows with some unusual and impressive guitar work as well as Brent really going off on the B3. 'Ramble on Rose' is always a favorite, then a nice 'Sailor> Saint'. They close the set with a rockin' 'Deal'. Grateful Dead Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA 12/13/80 - Saturday One Feel Like A Stranger [7:06] > Sugaree [11:28] > C C Rider [8:14] ; To Lay Me Down [9:42] ; New Minglewood Blues [6:39#] ; Ramble On Rose [7:04] ; Lost Sailor [6:06] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:41] > Deal [6:50] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120321.mp3 I hope this finds you healthy and in the holiday spirit. In this week's episode, our Season 3 Finale, we wrap things up in December 1992 in Oakland, CA, with a show from the larger returning run following Jerry's health crisis during the summer/fall. Featuring a unique setlist filled with songs of every era, the lone Vince solo show of the series, and perhaps the most bizarre song pairing in Dick's Picks history, it's a wild and fitting closure to S3 of our show.Disc One opens with the song we've all been waiting for since the series began: “Feel Like A Stranger.” While we don't get the Brent growl throughout, we get the silky silky reprise all the same, and it leads to a larger conversation within the show. Elsewhere we hear an updated take on “The Main Thing,” where Bob's “De Men's” line clashes heavily with the barroom swirl of Pigpen. “Loose Lucy” makes its DP debut in a sultry groove before a fantastic “Let It Grow” closes it out. In Disc Two we hear some of the 90's jamming applied to “Shakedown Street” before Bob's grunge inspired guitar tones take over “Ship Of Fools.” More 90's jamming invades “Playing” which moves into an inspired “Drums -> Space.” Finally, in Disc Three, we get a rare 90's “Dark Star” alongside the groove of “Throwing Stones” from 12/17. The volume ends with the most bizarre pairing of songs in DP history with “Baba O'Rielly -> Tomorrow Never Knows.” Vince takes the lead here and the band somehow stumbles through the Boomer Anthem pairing. There's truly nothing like it, and it's a perfect way to close the volume and Season 3 of 36 From The Vault.36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. Great set this week - the 2nd set from the band's performance at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco on 10/11/80. Great quality tape - and right off they sound hot .. a wonderful 'Stranger' punctuated with some smoking guitar. Even the Mama Tried>Mexicali has some real smokin' licks. Personally I find the post-Donna 'Passenger' to be one of the best of this period.. really well done. There's nothign shabby here, and the closing Sailor>Saint has some great jamming in it. We all like to belong to something or someone. But we cannot help but feel like strangers. Why? And what do we do about it?
Episode #104 Have you ever felt like you were just a paycheck? Like you're just living to go to work, earn money, come home to do things around the house, fix things, lift heavy stuff and then go back to work and repeat the process? As men, we have historically held the identity of being the provider. Typically, we are the ones who go to work to earn money and provide for our families in the aspect of finance. Because of this, we end up having to skip some of the special events with our families. We miss out on the memories of our child's music recital or graduation, a field trip, or maybe our child got into trouble and we're not there to hear their side of the story and provide them with guidance. And because we missed all of these events, we end up feeling like a stranger in our own homes. We end up feeling that our wives have a deeper connection with our child because we are missing out on the experiences. Is this something you can relate to? If you found yourself in this situation, what would you do? Would you naturally resort to feeling like a victim? Or will you step up, take ownership and be the powerful man that you are? Remember this, you will always have a choice. What you will learn in this episode: The three things to do to stop feeling like a stranger in your own home The importance of taking ownership The importance of going to the Alpha Reset ————- Hungry for more? Head over to our BONUS page for special access to some of the deeper tactics and techniques we've developed at The Powerful Man.
This week's Deadpod features the band's performance at the Rainbow Theater in London England on Saturday October 3rd, 1981. This second set contains some wonderful improvisational music and both a fabulous pre-drums setlist and a spectacular Morning Dew. I think you'll agree that the music here flows beyond the structure of these songs to explore some unexpected places before settling back into familiar terrain. There's some great sound in Drums and Space as well. On this fine summer weekend we get to listen to the second set of the Dead's 4th of July appearance in Austin Texas back in 1981. The set opens hot, with a great 'Feel Like a Stranger' followed by a very nice 'Bird Song' - Jerry rips it up. A nice stretched out 'Playin' In the Band' leads into Drums and Space, and a great 'Not Fade Away' takes us into the post Drums segment of the show. 'Wharf Rat' and 'Sugar Mag' close it out, and they return for a spirited 'One More Saturday Night' where Weir again has some fun with the lyrics.. @bigpharmaslut is an art project by Alissa, an artist and student based out of California. Alissa’s art is informed by her experiences living with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, complex post-traumatic stress disorder and depression--and the medications she’s used to regulate her mental health issues. With @bigpharmaslut, Alissa is looking to bring vulnerability and realness to a medium that can often be overly-curated--Instagram. @bigpharmaslut does not advocate for pharmaceutical use, and doesn’t aim to pill-shame; the project is to simply share and relate to experiences with mental illness, with pharmaceuticals being a big component--particularly with Alissa's years-long struggle in trying to wean herself off of Paxil (those brain zaps are a hell of a thing). Alissa shares how her art has been key in her recovery, how important activism is in her art and pop culture’s influence in her art and her life. This week we will listen to the second set from the Dead's performance that took place on April 15th, 1983 in Rochester NY. This is a very long, sometimes meandering set, that clocks in at over one hour and 47 minutes. Despite its length, it seems a bit void of Garcia vocals. The set starts out well enough with a Feel Like A Stranger and Samson and Delilah to get the crowd moving. Brent follows with 'Maybe You Know' a tune I always enjoyed until he stopped performing it in '86. After that we get a very soulful 'He's Gone' which leads into one of only three performances of a little ditty that has been called 'Bob Star' or 'Little Star' .. this leads into a long and quite space drums and space. Five songs follow post space, all pretty well played and ending with a 'Johnny B Goode'. Jerry comes out for the encore with a 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' which was done quite often in that slot during this period. War Memorial Auditorium, Rochester, NY (4/15/83) set 2 Feel Like a Stranger Samson and Delilah Ship of Fools Maybe You Know How I Feel He's Gone drums Throwin' Stones Not Fade Away Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad Around and Around Johnny B. Goode Baby Blue
On the heels of an acclaimed tour of east and south, Furthur has just announced dates for their summer tour. It seemed to me to be only fitting to feature the band this week for those of you who may not have been fortunate enough to catch them so far this year, as well as those of you lucky enough to have seen them. This week I'm going to feature music from two of their recent shows, first from a show in Pittsburgh, then from Phil Lesh's birthday show in New York City. I encourage you to visit http://www.furthur.net"> where you can read about their tour plans, and purchase recordings of all their recent shows. I do hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! The band often played very good runs up to the famous New Year's Eve shows - often these shows would be better than the NYE show itself. This week I decided to bring you one of these 'NYE' run shows, this one from 1990. Bruce Hornsby is with the band and does a wonderful Valley Road to end this first set. I'll bring you the second set next week - I hope you enjoy it.. This week I have an excellent show from 1989 for your listening pleasure - we'll be hearing the first part of August 6th, 1989 from Cal Expo. The show starts with a 'Let the Good Times Roll' that the band ends perfectly and rolls into 'Feel Like a Stranger' and then Franklin's Tower.. A very interesting and well played start to a wonderful show. I really enjoy this first part of the show - highlighted by Garcia's singing on Ramble on Rose and a great version of Birdsong. I've included the magnificent Scarlet->Fire that opens the 2nd set..
