I am delighted to welcome this week to The Joy of Cruising Podcast, Walter Biscardi, Founder of Where's Walter Travel. Sometimes I mention passionate cruisers I interview who moved me to add a destination or experience or vessel to my ever-expanding bucket list, or to book one already on my bucket list. Walter was one such passionate cruiser who moved me to booking a cruise on Virgin Voyages. Here's the thing; I hadn't interviewed him. I met Walter on YouTube where I incessantly watch cruise videos, even with the sound down when I am recording or editing a podcast episode or just listening to music. I happened upon a video where Walter was reviewing every food venue on Virgin Voyages, which was on my bucket list. Walter seemed so genuine and impressed by the food. Most importantly, he was persuasive. Shortly after viewing that video we booked Scarlet Lady for our first cruise on Virgin Voyages next month! Since viewing Walter's Virgin Voyages video, we've become not just friends and followers of each other on social media, but collaborators. Where's Walter Travel is The Joy of Cruising Podcast's Travel Agent Partner. So, shameless plug, you can now book your cruises through The Joy of Cruising Podcast www.thejoyofcruising.net! Walter is relatively new to the travel business; yet, I wanted him as a guest on The Joy of Cruising Podcast based on the difference he has made in the 15 months or so he has been involved in cruising. Walter's appeal is mainly as a cruise content creator who I have found that I can relate to mainly because of his relevant and incisive commentary, outstanding production quality, and frankly, his ‘everyman' persona depicted on his videos. As we became friends, I learned of hisbackground prior to becoming a Travel Agent: over 30 years in film, television, and marketing. Walter owned creative agencies in Atlanta for 20 years. Heard of the Food Networks' Good Eats with Alton Brown? Walter was fortunate to be a part of Peabody Awards for the show. Wow.Walter started Where's Walter TikTok in December 2021. He wanted to offer honest information about cruising so folks could make an informed decision on whether to take a cruise, noting, “There was so much bad and incorrect information out there as cruising restarted.” By April 2022 his audience started asking him to become a Travel Agent. In October 2022, Where's Walter Travel was launched and realized virtually immediate success. Support the show

After almost 10 years in business, High Road Craft Brands has begun to look outside of ice cream for products. They even purchased another company to fold into their operations. With a company founded by, and still run by, chefs the opportunity to bring Ciao Bella Gelato and Sorbetto into the High Road Craft Brands family was too good to pass up. Ciao Bella has a long history in food service and it was CEO Keith Schroeder's heart that led to the acquisition of the company. As the company prepares to move forward into 2020 and beyond, a restructuring of the parent company was necessary. High Road Craft Brands is now the home of 5 distinct brands and the ability to manage those brands, deliver quality products and win in the retail market means raising the game for the entire corporation.Keith shares the inside stories on the mindset of purchasing another company along with the why and how the restructuring was necessary for High Road to continue to grow its market share moving forward. This discussion touches upon raising capital, what to consider when purchasing another company and thoughts on maintaining proper company structure as you grow and evolve. This is the third of a three part overview discussion on the launch, expansion and future of High Road Craft Brands. This episode features host Walter Biscardi, Jr., Executive Creative Director for High Road Craft Brands and CEO Keith Schroeder. You can also watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Asuyg_d5aUI
After successfully launching High Road by keeping a singular focus on food service clients, CEO Keith Schroeder was presented an unexpected opportunity to move into retail. High Road was also unexpectedly kicked out of their original commercial home.Ironically it was High Road's narrow focus on providing high quality ice cream products to food service clients in Atlanta that created the retail opportunity Keith wanted to avoid. Retail meant investment in new equipment, new processes, new employees and moving into the brutal world of grocery frozen foods. Ice Cream is one of the most difficult grocery areas to win. As High Road's retail momentum started to grow, Keith was faced with another unexpected development, eviction from his commercial home because the new owners planned to tear down the entire property. Proof that fact is stranger than fiction, this discussion dives into the mindset of an entrepreneur faced with change that brings tremendous risk to the business. Keith shares the real story on how High Road made that leap into retail, how they raised the capital to purchase the new equipment and then how he went about moving his entire company while still delivering quality product to his customers. This discussion is all about leap of faith for those of you looking to take that next step. Move your home based business into commercial. Grow your commercial business into retail. Grow your business from small to medium or large. This is the second of a three part overview discussion on the launch, expansion and future of High Road Craft Brands. This episode features host Walter Biscardi, Jr., Executive Creative Director for High Road Craft Brands and CEO Keith Schroeder. You can also watch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/VHdOTWDUAcQ
Every story has a beginning. High Road Craft Brands was born of one chef's frustration with the limitations in the corporate food service world.Keith Schroeder made the leap from Executive Chef to Entrepreneur to seize an opportunity in the food service manufacturing sector. But this was not a leap made blindly. In this discussion you'll hear some of the steps Keith took including business school programs to prepare himself to not just open a business, but to be successful by keeping a narrow focus. This is a great, real-world introduction for anyone who is ready to make that leap from employee to entrepreneur but isn't sure exactly what they need to do to prepare. Whether you're in food service or any other industry, the path that Keith followed to start the High Road is full of good advice for all listeners. This is the first of a three part overview discussion on the launch, expansion and future of High Road Craft Brands. This episode features host Walter Biscardi, Jr., Executive Creative Director for High Road Craft Brands and CEO Keith Schroeder. You can also watch this podcast on YouTube: https://youtu.be/s01OeuUcYoM
Sometimes to get noticed in the creative world you have to bite the bullet and take spec work (pitching or producing work that you may or may not get paid for). 50 years ago that meant pitching ideas to a large corporation (e.g. General Motors), and if they liked your ideas you won a multi-million dollar account. In today's world doing spec work is infinitely more complicated with crowdsourcing sites like 99 Designs, contests like the Doritos $1 million dollar Super Bowl commercials, and endless competition with template and stock companies that can provide entire packages for companies and individuals at affordable prices. In this episode I discuss how to navigate the ever-changing world of spec work with post-production industry veterans Walter Biscardi and Shane Ross. Whether you are a seasoned vet figuring out how to survive in our rapidly shifting industry, or you are just breaking in and can't figure out if spec work is worth it, we cover everything we can. Topics of Conversation: Using templates versus hiring a editor/designer How to decide if doing spec work is right for you The difference between pitching a project and creating one for free The changing landscape of pricing in the creative free market Why 99 Designs is doing business the right way Learning to value your own work Ask yourself: "Do I retain the rights to my creative content?" What an ideal relationship between a client and creator should look like Difficulties of breaking into the film industry Developing a portfolio from scratch Should you use templates or hire a designer?
