Pat McGowan - CEO and Founder of BlackBox Global. In this special edition of the Artful Camera, I revisit a topic that was first presented here in episode #224 in May of 2017 - the idea of using an aggregator to submit stock video to other agencies. In that episode I spoke (rather skeptically I admit) to Founder and CEO of BlackBox Global - Pat McGowan. In September of this year (2018) BlackBox posted a record month in sales, and recently onboarded over 28,000 creators. BlackBox is now the largest contributor to the Big 4 Agencies: Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Pond 5, and Story Blocks. With claims like that I felt it was time to talk with Pat again about BlackBox. In this episode you are going to hear that BlackBox is much much more than an aggregator of stock video. As creators, I think we get it, the gig economy can be a tough source of income (or lack thereof). Diversifying revenue sources is a protection to creators. BlackBox provides an inventive way for creators to realize more profits from doing the thing they love. BlackBox provides a strong community for creators, and a platform for close collaborations among other creators. That’s what this conversation today with Pat McGowan of BlackBox Global is all about. Pat’s production company routinely did million dollar jobs with a team of 40 people and high end video production gear. But all that dried up overnight. BlackBox is the result of that sudden downturn. Pat is determined that creators have other means to profit from doing the thing they love. What Photographers Can Learn From the Old Masters (232)

Photography and painting have much in common. Both the painter and photographer are concerned about composition, lighting, color, and story. Photography is a relatively recent invention compared to painting. When the first photograph was taken in 1826 by Joseph Niepce, the practice of the painter already had a history developed over many centuries. Truly, the craft and art of photography owes much to the legacy of the old masters.   Mentioned in this episode: What Landscape Painting Can Teach Photographers–by Geoff Wittig http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2010/12/landscape-painting.html The Psychology of the "Decisive Moment"–by John Suler http://truecenterpublishing.com/photopsy/decisive_moment.htm   This episode is sponsored by: CrumplePop - Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X Plugins: http://crumplepop.com StoryBlocks.com - Uncage Your Creativity. John Reuter’s professional and artistic life is tightly interwoven with the story of the Polaroid 20x24 camera and the artists that used it to bring their creative visions to life. It’s an important story worth preserving. John has has worked tirelessly to keep the 20x24 Polaroid camera alive. Part 1 of my conversation with John (found in episode 230 of the Artful Camera) contains the history of image transfer, image lift, and direct manipulation of Polaroid images. In part 2 of my conversation with John, the focus is on the artwork John created with the 20x24 Polaroid camera and the now rare Polacolor film. John reveals the creative process he used in making his evocative 20x24 Polacolor image transfers. The transfer image is just the beginning of a long process of creating many layers of “history” within the print. The process includes distressing the image and mark making with various pigments, oil pastels, and mediums. The end result is an image rich in texture and beauty. John’s images are currently on exhibit at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre until August 5, 2017. The exhibit is called John Reuter: Second Impressions, Polaroid Process to Singapore Infrared.   Mentioned in this episode: John Reuter's website: http://johnreuter.com/blog/ 20x24 Studio: http://www.20x24studio.com The Polaroid 20x24 Image Transfer Process: https://youtu.be/rlos9pgah3s Jim Dine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Dine Giotto: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giotto Rosamond Purcell: http://www.anartthatnaturemakes.com JoAnn Verburg: http://joannverburg.com Robert Rauschenberg: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Rauschenberg http://www.20x24studio.com/?page_id=2329 Chuck Close: http://chuckclose.com https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Close http://www.20x24studio.com/?p=2282 William Wegman: http://williamwegman.com/home.html Joyce Tenneson: http://www.tenneson.com https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joyce_Tenneson David Levinthal: http://www.davidlevinthal.com Tim Burton: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Burton Art Kane: https://www.artkane.com https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Kane Elsa Dorfman: http://www.elsadorfman.com https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elsa_Dorfman Jack Perno: http://www.jackperno.com http://www.jackperno.com/polaroid-emulsion-1 Beatrice Pediconi: http://www.beatricepediconi.com http://www.beatricepediconi.com/works/polaroids/ Palm Beach Photographic Centre: https://www.workshop.org/museum/exhibits/ Video tour of John Reuter’s Second Impressions exhibit: https://www.facebook.com/events/1342858102433943/permalink/1353500241369729/ Amon Carter Museum of American Art: http://www.cartermuseum.org http://www.cartermuseum.org/calendar/member-programs/camera-ready-the-polaroid-20x24-project     This episode is sponsored by: CrumplePop - Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro Plugins: http://crumplepop.com   About the Artful Camera: Website: https://carlolson.tv Instagram: @Artful.Camera https://www.instagram.com/artful.camera/ Send an email or voicemail to Artful Camera: https://carlolson.tv/contact/   Disclaimer: some links referenced in the show notes are affiliate links. Brian Greenberg - owner of Richard Photo Lab - joins me in this episode of the Artful Camera. Brian started his career in the photo industry over 20 years ago. His photo career has spanned from photo assisting, processing, scanning, printing and customer service. Before Brian bought Richard Photo Lab, it was originally owned by a man named - you guessed it - Richard. Richard immigrated from China to Hollywood, California. He opened a small, custom photo lab. Richard developed a strong reputation for superb craftsmanship. As a result, Richard acquired a small commercial photography customer base that remained intensely loyal to him. Years later, Richard was looking to retire. Brian Greenberg saw an opportunity to uphold what Richard’s name represented - superb quality and customer service. Embracing that culture and building upon it has turned Richard Photo Lab into one of the premiere full service photo labs in the world. Their services - which include film development, film scanning, and printing - is not limited to just film photography. They serve digital photographers, too, with their outstanding print services and products. Now you might be thinking this episode is just about a photo lab. It’s so much more than that as you will hear in this conversation. Brian is extremely passionate about helping photographers in their business, marketing, and branding. On Richard Photo Lab website they say: "Our passion feeds our work, and our work feeds our passion.” You will hear the truth in that statement as you listen to Brian in this episode. Steven Bernstein, ASC, is a writer, director, producer, cinematographer, and instructor. In this episode of the Artful Camera, Steve engages in a fascinating conversation about screenwriting, lighting, and the visual language of filmmaking. Steve began his film career as a cinematographer in the United Kingdom, first doing documentaries, then commercials. He went on to shoot many landmark feature films for both studios and independents including the highly acclaimed Like Water For Chocolate and the Oscar winning motion picture Monster – starring Charlize Theron. That movie was directed by a name that should be familiar to all film goers today - Patty Jenkins - who is the director of Wonder Woman currently in theaters at the time this episode was recorded (June 2017). Steve is the author of the best selling book Film Production. It’s about the process of film making. He has also authored several other books and screenplays. One of Steve’s most recent projects is a new film about Dylan Thomas, called Dominion, starring John Malkovich. Steve wrote the screenplay for Dominion, which he also produced and directed. And, by the way, the next time you are filling up your tank at a QuickTrip or RaceTrac and someone comes up to you and ask for $5 - you will not view that person in the same way again after hearing Steve’s conversation. Dave Bias continues in part 2 of this interview by telling the fascinating story of how co-founders Nicola Baldini and Marco Pagni teamed together to resurrect Ferrania as FILM Ferrania to bring back analog film production. Dave talks about FILM Ferrania's successful Kickstarter campaign that allowed them to invest in the future of analog film. However, as with any good story adversity lurks around the corner threatening the protagonist’s journey. Dave tells us that proved true with FILM Ferrania. They suffered a major setback in refurbishing the manufacturing facility that caused them to have to delay the release of a new color reversal film originally promised as a reward to their Kickstarter supporters. Meanwhile, the FILM Ferrania team found an old hand written note in a diary that turned out to be the formula and manufacturing instructions of a gorgeous, silver-packed, black and white cinema film stock that is the stuff of legends: P30. Producing the first batches of P30 proved to be a good learning step in developing and fine turning the machinery and processes for eventually making color reversal film. Dave Bias' gripping and inspiring account of the extraordinary story of the resurgence of analog film is a story that has only just begun. Dave Bias and the FILM Ferrania Story - Part 1 (222)

To call Dave Bias a creative is too limiting. He is a story teller, a entrepreneur, a photographer, a graphic designer, and much more – a 21st century polymath. Dave's journey begins in a small West Virginia town as vinyl record shop owner. A love of folding cameras (such as the pre-World War II Voigtländer Bessa) and a chance encounter with a rented Hasselblad leads Dave into the world of photography. When Polaroid stopped making instant film, Dave took on what to some may have seemed to be a quixotic quest to save Polaroid. That led to his work with Impossible Project. And from there, Dave moved on to FILM Ferrania. Ferrania was founded in 1917 and later started manufacturing photographic and motion picture film. In 1964 they were bought by 3M and became primarily a white label film manufacturer. The near death of film photography due to the dramatic advancement of digital cameras led to Ferrania ceasing film manufacturing and finally shuttered their plant doors in 2010. Curiously, the pulse of the apparent corpse of film photography indicated a faint heart beat that began to grow stronger and stronger. A small but passionate group of artists and photographers from around the world clamored for something more tangible and beautiful – something that only film could provide. Film was not dead! Nicola Baldini and Marco Pagni teamed together to bring back to life Ferrania as FILM Ferrania to bring back film. They ran a successful kickstarted that ended October 2014 with 5582 backers raising $322,420. So where does Dave Bias fit in the FILM Ferrania story? He is now spearheading the marketing and sales of FILM Ferrania film in the United States. Dave wants to ensure that the FILM Ferrania makes analog film for the next 100 years and beyond. When pre-ordering opened for the first alpha batch of P30, the servers crashed and burned. When their e-commerce store came back online, P30 sold out almost immediately. That’s truly a good problem to have! It’s a big story that one episode cannot comfortably contain so I’ve created two episodes to tell their story. Part 1 fittingly begins with the story of Dave Bias. Rick Delgado on Filming Analog Made with RED (214)

Cinematographer Rick Delgado has worked for a broad range of commercial clients and is in high demand as he jumps around from his home base in Miami to LA, NY, and all over the globe. Rick is a talented, sensitive, thoughtful story teller who I previously featured in episode 188 of the Artful Camera (previously known as the Digital Convergence Podcast). When I spoke to Rick in that episode, I knew I wanted to have the chance to speak with him again. As it turned out, we were able to collaborate work together for a few days shooting a mini-documentary called Analog Made. It was a delight to work with Rick, and get hands-on experience with his RED Weapon fitted with the superb 8K Helium sensor. With a Super35 sensor, the Helium features much improved low light performance with less noise and breathtaking dynamic range. Working with the RED was a considerable step up in quality and technology for me. This camera capable of capturing gorgeous massive 8K RAW video at up to 60 fps. Drop down to 4K, and the slow-mo capability increases to 120 fps. Go down to 2K, and an impressively liquid 240 fps is achievable–which we took advantage of in a number of closeups. Impressive as the RED Weapon is, of even greater value to me was the chance to work closely with Rick and benefit from his extensive experience as a highly sought after director of photography. Of note, too, is that Rick is a hybrid shooter and is often called upon to shoot both still photos and video at the same time. His tool of choice for shooting stills is the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. This episode of the Artful Camera was recorded in my home after wrapping up two full days shooting together. This is the first time I’ve recorded a podcast episode live in my office with another guest in the studio. Having Rick in the studio certainly changed up the dynamics of recording a conversation. It was such a delight that I’m going to have to find a way to live in-house recordings like this again if future episodes of the podcast. In the conversation we recorded together, Rick and I talk about what it was like to shoot the Analog Made documentary with wood turner Danny McCravy. Rick delves into the differences of shooting commercial work and documentaries and the process of extracting a story. Rick walks us through how you go through the interview process with the person talking about their life and then from there begin to piece things together: Where does the story begin? What is the crescendo of the story? What is the main take-away? What do you leave with when the filming is done? It isn’t always possible to know what the story is or know where the story leads to when you begin filming a documentary–but one this is certain: the story will reveal itself. Now that shooting has wrapped for this installment of Analog Made, next begins the process of putting the story together from the beautiful footage that DP Rick Delgado masterfully captured. I’ll be using REDCINE-X Pro and FCP X together to edit the piece. I’ll save that experience for a future episode. This year I’ve published 31 episodes of the Digital Convergence Podcast. If there is anything to be learned from these podcast episodes this year it’s that gear will only get you so far. Most cameras made today are good–even the iPhone in your pocket. Video editor Chris Fenwick called the iPhone a “studio in our hands.” With such power and quality available to us, there’s no reason to agonize over what camera to buy. In essence, there’s nothing left to pixel peep because all pixels are pretty good.  So now that we’ve got gear angst out of the way, in 2017 and beyond, we can move on and focus on creating. You are first and foremost a creative.  Imagination trumps gear.  The creative process begins with an idea. Where do creative ideas come from? In this last episode of 2016, I explore this question and examine the creative process through a series of interview clips that feature filmmaker and director David Lynch, actor and comedian Gene Wilder, director and explorer James Cameron, composer and performer Yanni, musician and founder of The Black Eyed Peas will.i.am, producer and musician Brian Eno, and author, lecturer, and education expert Sir Ken Robinson. Their thoughts on where creative ideas originate, the creative process, creative failure, and overcoming creative discouragement will inspire you to expand your creative horizons no matter what your situation is in life, or the gear and software you have, in the year ahead.  Please support our show sponsors:  Get your yearly subscription to the VideoBlocks + AudioBlocks bundle today for only $149 here: http://videoblocks.com/digital2016  CrumplePop - Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X Plugins: http://crumplepop.com  Mentioned in the show:  Interviews on Creativity:  Hitchcock's Definition of Happiness: https://youtu.be/14dOICbwSIs  Gene Wilder on Creativity (from CTForum.org) https://youtu.be/4gG3ludjkMs  James Cameron Interview on Creativity | Montréal 2014: https://youtu.be/duEyYGqWFt8  Yanni: Illustrating the Creative Process: https://youtu.be/xQJ21n9LDHo  will.i.am on Creativity | American Genius (from National Geographic): https://youtu.be/yEnVShUZXks  Brian Eno by Alfred Dunhill: https://youtu.be/5mqtc2Z3K8o  Brian Eno & Steven Johnson On Art (from How We Get To Next): https://youtu.be/RMU5nhpb4LE  Sir Ken Robinson on creativity and education: https://youtu.be/fKaGExyFOR0  Steve Johnson’s How We Get To Next: https://howwegettonext.com  The amazing people featured on Digital Convergence Podcast in 2016:  Filmmakers:  Justin DeMers and Ray Tsang: DCP 185: Team of One Filmmaking with Justin DeMers and Ray Tsang: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-185-team-of-one-filmmaking-with-justin-demers-and-ray-tsang  Rick Delgado: DCP 188: Director and Cinematographer Rick Delgado: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-188-director-and-cinematographer-rick-delgado  Cinzia Angelini: DCP 190: Mila Film Writer and Director Cinzia Angelini and Producer Andrea Emmes: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-190-mila-film-writer-and-director-cinzia-angelini-and-producer-andrea-emmes  Jason Amm: DCP 191: Jason Amm - Producer of Electronic Voyager: Retracing Bob Moog's Sonic Journey: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-191-jason-amm-producer-of-electronic-voyager-retracing-bob-moogs-sonic-journey  Mathew Farrell: DCP 193: The Karakoram Anomaly - With Mathew Farrell: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-193-the-karakoram-anomaly-with-mathew-farrell  Tom Bryan: DCP 202: Tom Bryan's The Casey Neistat School of Filmmaking: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-202-tom-bryans-the-casey-neistat-school-of-filmmaking  Ken Bell: DCP 206: Kenn Bell - Director of Second Chance Dogs: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-206-kenn-bell-director-of-second-chance-dogs  Entrepreneurs:  Soundstripe: DCP 189: Soundstripe Co-Founder Micah Sannan: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-189-soundstripe-co-founder-micah-sannan  Jason Been: DCP 192: Jason Been - Imagecraft Productions: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-192-jason-been-imagecraft-productions  Dylan Higginbotham: DCP 207: Dylan Higginbotham - Founder of Stupid Raisins and Creator of FCP X Plugins: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-207-dylan-higginbotham-founder-of-stupid-raisins-and-creator-of-fcp-x-plugins Brent Barbano of Sharegrid: DCP 196: Am I Getting Paid Enough? - Part 3: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-196-am-i-getting-paid-enough-part-3 Mentors: Dave Dugdale: DCP 203: Dave Dugdale on Sony and Canon: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-203-dave-dugdale-on-sony-and-canon  Caleb Pike: DCP 204: Caleb Pike Builds a Hackintosh for FCP X: https://creativemethod.tv/blog/dcp-204-caleb-pike-builds-a-hackintosh-for-fcp-x  Kris Simmons: DCP 194: Am I Getting Paid Enough? Kenn Bell, a freelance filmmaker and animal welfare advocate, talks with me about how he created his powerful, heart-rending documentary called Second Chance Dogs. His story begins back in 2011, when Kenn developed the critically-acclaimed documentary Hero Dogs of 9/11, which aired on Animal Planet in both the U.S. and Canada. His success with this documentary led to a more ambitious project with the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) that would later become Second Chance Dogs. What is Second Chance Dogs about? It tells the story of how the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center is dedicated to giving these abused and neglected animals another chance. Through innovative techniques, patience, and complete commitment, the staff at the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center is moving these animals — once considered hopeless cases — from rescue to rehabilitation, and ultimately into safe and loving homes. Over the course of six months, we meet several dogs in the program and follow their progress as they learn to be handled by people, walk with a leash, engage in healthy play, and exhibit the kind of social behavior that make dogs so special and beloved. Earlier this year Second Chance Dogs made it’s first appearance on Animal Planet. And now, it’s available for viewing on Netflix. I encourage you to go watch the documentary. Be sure to have a box of tissue nearby when you do! Kenn is a fascinating guy with a passion for animals and filmmaking. You are going to find Kenn’s story inspiring! His blazing fast Hackintosh leaves Apple's Mac Pro spinning its beachball cursor in dazed confusion and gasping in the dust. How much did Caleb’s Hackintosh cost? About $1600 - thousands of dollars less expensive than a Mac Pro. In this conversation Caleb talks about finally ditching Adobe Creative Cloud. He no longer has a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud and is getting along just fine without it. He talks about equivalent software that allows him to get the job done without having a monthly bill for the software. Caleb also talks about his philosophy of eliminating things that don’t bring you joy. Last week Chris Fenwick and I explored scene by scene Casey Neistat’s video: The Casey Neistat’s Guide to Filmmaking. In that episode, Chris referenced a hilarious video created by London-based director and filmmaker Tom Bryan. Tom’s film is called "The Casey Neistat School of Filmmaking." Tom Bryan's real passion - though already an accomplished corporate video producer - is to create drama oriented films. The Casey Neistat School of Filmmaking - self-funded and created with an all volunteer crew - is the first in a series of several narrative films Tom has set out to create this year. Watching this short film, it’s obvious he is off to an amazing start. Tom is a filmmaker to watch! I know a lot of folks - especially filmmakers - don’t get the Neistat phenomena. On August 25th, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV - was officially announced amidst a cacophony of both praise and disappointment - depending on whether you are primarily a stills photographer or videographer. Ben Bruton-Cox of the Our Week In Video podcast helps me work through my own angst over Canon. Is the Mark IV right for me?   “Expectation postponed makes the heart sick, but a desire realized is a tree of life” –ancient proverb.   After 8 years of unrequited love and anticipation, Canon has slammed the door closed on the convergence market that they gave birth to. When the 5D Mark II was released, it had the most basic of video features. But, O!, it was the loveliest HD video ever seen (only 30fps in the beginning, moire, poor dynamic range, and rolling shutter notwithstanding) from a camera costing less than $3,500. With that camera, Canon accidentally created the “convergence” market, and with it, hope and expectation that  Canon would continually improve the video features of the EOS 5D line.   Sadly, I feel that if Canon could go back in time, they would never approved video capability in any of their DSLRs. However, the genie is out of the bottle. The convergence market’s expectation was that their desires for pro video features would be built into 5D Mark IV. They thought “surely after 8 years we will have the ultimate convergence camera!”   Alas, that expectation - at least by those who consider themselves convergence photographers and filmmakers - was unrealized. They are the ones most disappointed in the EOS 5D Mark IV because Canon has the capability to deliver and meet the needs and wants of convergence creators, but have deliberately hobbled these features. What makes this sting even more is the marketing language Canon used to announce the 5D Mark IV gushes with phrases such as:   “see legendary"   “builds on the powerful legacy of the 5D series"   “amazing refinements"   “creative videographers will appreciate the brilliance and power that the EOS 5D Mark IV delivers"   You certainly have to have a creative imagination to believe that.   Frankly, the EOS 5D Mark IV feels like an intentional hobbling of features that – I believed if were reversed – would see Canon crush it over and beyond what they are doing now with the sale of mid range DSLRs.   The EOS 5D Mark IV is no doubt a superb still camera with competent - though mostly outdated - HD video baked in.  It’s a camera I want to like. I personally haven’t bought into other convergence cameras by Sony and Panasonic yet.   I love Canon. I love Canon gear. I love the Canon image. I love the Canon ergonomics. I love Canon lenses.   I get it that my love for Canon is unrequited and they probably don't want me – a convergence creative – as a customer. It hurts a bit in part because I and so many other convergence bloggers, podcasters, and YouTubers have resulted in the sales of tens of thousands of Canon DSLRs to convergence creatives - all to Canon’s benefit - and all without any compensation to us whatsoever.   Some folks make the claim that we should all just trust Canon’s marketing department, that they are smart, and know what they are doing. This is a dubious claim. Many large companies have marketing departments that have been clueless about their customers - resulting in massive failure for those companies. The same can happen to Canon.   It’s a serious mistake for Canon to jilt the very market they created – albeit accidentally.    Mentioned in the episode:   CrumplePop's website http://crumplepop.com   CrumplePop AudioDenoise http://www.crumplepop.com/fcpx-premiere-plugin-audio-denoise/   CrumplePop EchoRemover http://www.crumplepop.com/fcpx-premiere-audio-plugin-echoremover/   Soundstripe.com http://soundstripe.com   Ben Bruton-Cox and Our Week In Video podcast https://www.facebook.com/ourweekinvideo/   Canon EOS 5D Mark IV https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/dslr/eos-5d-mark-iv   Official Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Introduction https://youtu.be/8Z9089048wk   Introducing the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV https://youtu.be/BtD-xEvG21E   Jared Polin “Fro Knows Photos” Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR Preview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0ou39qKoWM   Planet 5D article by Mitch Anger - RANT: “The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Doesn’t Have…” http://blog.planet5d.com/2016/08/rant-the-canon-eos-5d-mark-iv-doesnt-have/

In the last episode of the Digital Convergence Podcast, Kris Simmons (of 6 Strong Media and KRE8 University) and I discussed a question submitted by listener Pat Miller. He gave us a link to a video he produced for a cycling component company he recently produced. After sharing how much time he had invested in the project, he asked us “Am I getting paid enough?” - without telling us how much he got paid to produce the video! In that episode Kris and I shared our thoughts of what the rate should be for a video like the one Pat produced. Our guess was in the thousands - $5,000 to $10,000. After episode 194 aired, Pat Miller emailed us with what he charged and provided additional production details. In this episode we share that with you. Wow! Just, Wow! Digital Convergence Podcast listener Pat Miller emailed me some time back with the question “Am I Getting Paid Enough?” The question came with a twist - Pat didn’t tell us how much he charged his client for the video in question. I invited Kris Simmons to view Pat’s video before making a response. This episode is our response to Pat's cool question! What do you think? What would you have charged to do a video like the one Pat Miller did? DCP 193: The Karakoram Anomaly With Mathew Farrell

To what lengths will you go as a photographer or filmmaker to do a job? Photographer and filmmaker Mathew Farrell has probably gone farther and higher than most of us will in a lifetime. Mat was hired to document a team of scientists doing valuable glaciology fieldwork in the Karakoram, Yukshin Gardan Sar, area in northern Pakistan. For the past several years, climate change has caused much human suffering and loss of life and property from glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF). GLOFs occur when lakes of water hidden within the ice walls of glaciers burst through those icy walls. The entire lake floods the inhabited areas below the glaciers. Hence the need for this survey. How did Mat get involved? About a year ago I received this email from him: "On a more exciting note, this winter (your summer) I’ve been invited to join a three month long science, community development and climbing expedition to Karakoram mountains in Pakistan. The expedition is called the Karakoram Anomaly Project (karakoram.co). In brief, the expedition will be investigating why glaciers in the Karakoram are growing instead of receding; run local community workshops about the flood risk associated with these growing glaciers; will climb a new route on a 7000m (21000ft) peak. I’m heading along to shoot a documentary about the expedition, as well as helping with scientific photography work." Wow! That’s a story I wanted to know more about! In this episode, Mat talks about his experience documenting this important survey with a Sony a7s kit and a Cinestar drone. It’s a story of endurance, frustrating setbacks, survival and ultimately - success. Jason Been, owner of Imagecraft Productions, has been working in television production for over 20 years and has an extensive knowledge of the production world. He began his career in the early 1990s as a freelance audio guy and then found his way behind a camera to work as a camera operator. His career then evolved into business ownership. After working for Imagecraft Productions for a few years, he purchased the company and transformed it from a simple owner/operator business into one of Los Angeles's leading boutique rental houses. Imagecraft has provided equipment and technical services to a number of popular shows including World Poker Tour, Pawn Stars, and many other shows. Jason's experience ranges from large scale live events to small single camera ENG shoots. In our conversation in this episode of the Digital Convergence Podcast, Jason talks about how he transitioned from being an employee of Imagecraft Productions to being the owner and operator of Imagecraft. He shares his thoughts on the future of video production technology - Canon, Sony, and RED cameras, 4K, 8K, HDR, drones, the future of broadcast companies vs new content providers like Netflix. It’s a fascinating look–from someone intimately involved in video production–at the present and future of video production in a world where technology is rapidly changing the way we work. DCP 191: Jason Amm - Producer of Electronic Voyager: Retracing Bob Moog's Sonic Journey

Musician and documentary film producer Jason Amm talks with me about the film Electronic Voyager that he and director & filmmaker Robert Fantinatto are currently working on. Electronic Voyager follows Michelle Moog-Koussa as she retraces the footsteps of her late father, iconic synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog. As you listen to this fascinating conversation with Jason Amm, you will note the sense of urgency in bringing this documentary to life. Many of the pioneers of electronic music makers who used Moog synthesizers have died. The recent, tragic passing of Bob Moog's close friend and important collaborator, Keith Emerson - perhaps the most iconic Moog keyboardist - was just another reminder of how important it is to document Bob Moog's crucial chapter in the history of electronic music, NOW. Jason and Robert are keen to capture the legacy of Bob Moog before it’s too late from those who knew and worked with him. Jason and Robert are imminently qualified to tell such an important story. They produced the critically acclaimed documentary I Dream of Wires (released in 2014). I talked about I Dream of Wires back in episode 171 of the DCP. It's a documentary about the rise, fall and rebirth of a machine that shaped electronic music: the modular synthesizer. Over 100 inventors, musicians and enthusiasts are interviewed about their relationship with the modular synthesizer. Whereas I Dream of Wires was a tour-de-force of the history of the modular synthesizer, Electronic Voyager focuses on the person who is most identified as the father of modern electronic music synthesis: Bob Moog. This conversation with Jason Amm should prove an inspiration to all filmmakers and digital media creatives.
