S4 E25. Is the Toronto Police Force Antisemitic?

There was the “joke” a senior Toronto Police officer made one day to then One Homicide Chief, Hank Idsinga. You know, the one about a kosher bbq being a “Jew-Q.” As in, thinking that the idea of burning Jews during the Holocaust in Europe - was funny. The jokester told Idsinga it was really funny. And that was when Hank Idsinga began to see the deep antisemitism among police leadership, and others. And there was more. Much more.Idsinga's recently published book: “The High Road: Confessions of a Homicide Cop”, was released in early May and is prompting discussion about the conduct of the Toronto Police Force, particularly since October 7. Toronto has become a dangerous city for Jews to live in. Hostility toward Jewish people is overt, everywhere and inescapable. It was clear from October 7 that something was very wrong with how Toronto police were dealing with the outburst of Jew-hatred. The antisemites were given free rein. Police spoke about constitutional rights and other high-minded issues, which actually had nothing to do with the illegal conduct proliferating on Toronto streets. In fact, the cops protected the “protesters”, insisting they were not breaking laws and that their conduct was “peaceful.” Well, they were breaking many laws, and their conduct was anything but peaceful. Almost three years later, Toronto is unrecognizable and considered to be one of the most dangerous cities in the world in which to live today, as a Jew. This podcast episode is a touch longer than our usual, because there is so much important information to be shared. We focus on Hank Idsinga, his personal story and how that influenced his career, particularly in the later years. And we get into the way in which Toronto Police have handled overt and often violent antisemitism since October 7. Their conduct is indefensible. Inexplicable. And I have been writing and podcasting about this tirelessly. Only now, as attacks on Jews have become more frequent and violent - attracting international attention - has the Toronto Police Service even acknowledged that there may be, you know, a problem.I have provided time stamps for three sections of the podcast, so you can jump around or skip. But I urge you to listen to them all. They build on and reinforce one another. And the story of what is going down in Toronto is just one extreme example of what we are seeing in many cities around the world. This will not just “go away”.Thanks to Andrea Marcus, a friend, proud lifelong Torontonian, brilliant artist, and sponsor of this episode of State of Tel Aviv and Beyond. Like so many Canadians, Andrea is devastated by what has happened to Canada and Toronto, particularly in recent years. They are unrecognizable. Having served as Detective Sergeant and, later, Inspector in charge of Toronto's Homicide Squad, he has policed just about every kind of case you can imagine, and has stared down some of the hardest criminals the city has ever seen. Idsinga has received numerous awards from the Ontario Homicide Investigator's Association, and has twice been recognized by Toronto Life magazine as one of Toronto's 50 Most Influential People. Additionally, he is a regular presenter at policing conferences, including the FBI National Academy Associates Conference and the Ontario Homicide Investigators Conference, among others. Recently retired and now a crime commentary fixture on the Corus radio network (nationally) and Global Television, as well as American crime series in production, Idsinga speaks widely about policing in the wake of a highly decorated career. From decorated homicide detective Hank Idsinga comes The High Road—a raw, riveting true crime memoir from the man who helped take down one of Canada's most notorious serial killers.Hank Idsinga knew from the age of ten that he wanted to solve murders—especially after learning his grandfather had been executed by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Over a thirty-year career with Toronto Police Services, Idsinga rose through the ranks to lead the country's top homicide unit. From street crime to serial killers, he saw it all—and now, for the first time, he tells the story in his own voice.Written in a hard-boiled but deeply human tone, The High Road chronicles the highs and horrors of life on the homicide beat. Idsinga recounts some of Toronto's most gripping cases that caught the attention of the nation, including the Boxing Day shooting of Jane Creba, the Yonge Street shootouts, and—most infamously—the Bruce McArthur serial killer investigation. With equal parts warmth, candor, and gravity, he offers rare insight into how detectives do their work, how justice is served, and how the toll of the job is carried quietly and constantly.Far from glorifying violence, Idsinga focuses on the people at the heart of each case: the victims, the families, and the fellow officers who became like family over decades of service. Many of those families remain in touch with him today, a testament to his character and compassion. With the rise of true crime podcasts and docuseries, audiences are hungry for authentic, unfiltered voices—and The High Road delivers. This isn't just a book about catching killers. It's about the moral weight of justice, the value of empathy, and the complicated humanity on both sides of the badge.Podcast NotesIn the podcast I refer often to how entrenched antisemitism is in Canada and how obvious that has become since October 7. Below are links to two articles published in Toronto media regarding Idsinga's allegations regarding antisemitism on the police force.Following are links to podcasts and written articles by me, on the State of Tel Aviv website and in other publications. This is just a sampling of the work I have done on antisemitism in Canada, focusing on Toronto, since October 7. And there's much more. State of Tel Aviv is a reader-supported publication. ‘Not Optimistic': Idsinga Skeptical of Toronto Police Chief's Vow to Probe Antisemitism on the Force

Retired Toronto homicide inspector Hank Idsinga's new memoir about the systemic problems inside Canada's largest police force contains disturbing allegations about the force's persistent in-house discrimination and racism, including antisemitism. He also spells out for the first time his own family's Jewish and Holocaust roots – a history he's kept private for decades, while he oversaw some of the most high profile and gruesome murder cases in recent Canadian history. Idsinga insists he did speak up about his encounters with anti-Jewish bigots while he was still carrying a badge, long before he left the force in the fall of 2023, but to no avail. That's why despite Toronto's police chief and other officials now vowing to investigate his evidence, Idsinga holds out little hope of seeing changes anytime soon, be it about antisemitism, anti-Black racism or other problems. And despite recent public examples of the force's efforts to show solidarity with Jewish employees, including holding Hanukkah candle lighting ceremonies in the lobby of police headquarters, designing a regulation police kippah, appointing a new Jewish chaplain and a Jewish liaison committee, Idsinga calls all that “window dressing”. The veteran detective also draws a link between a unnamed senior staff member who he personally heard using antisemitic slurs, more than once, to the force's tepid response to the violence and hate crimes targeting Canada's largest Jewish community since Oct. 7, 2023. In today's wide-ranging interview with The CJN's North Star podcast host Ellin Bessner, Idsinga shares his own family's Holocaust trauma that saw his grandfather murdered in a gas chamber and his mother and her siblings hidden in convents. He reveals why he wanted to be a Nazi hunter before he decided to go into policing. In this episode of The Partnership Podcast, Lauren and Trey take us to a busy train in New York City for a real-time breakdown of a relational misstep. What started as a simple gesture to find seating for Lauren's baby sister turned into a clash of tones, intentions, and deep-seated childhood triggers. They deconstruct how a single word, "bossy", can carry decades of weight, and how they used the "Intent vs. Impact" framework to close the loop before a small moment became a long-term wound.Lauren and Trey recount a moment of tension in front of family. Lauren describes an open-handed suggestion for seating; Trey hears a pointed-finger command. Trey explains his abrupt, defensive reaction and why he felt the need to stand up for his autonomy in the moment. Lauren shares the vulnerability of being labeled "bossy"; a tag she's carried since childhood when she was tasked with parenting her siblings. The duo dives into the complexity of leadership vs. control, especially for women: Lauren reflects on being a "second-string parent" at age 11 and the confusing double standard of being demanded to lead, then shamed for it. Trey observes that Lauren is currently in a season of finding her voice and setting boundaries, and he discusses why "grace for the fuck-ups" is necessary when filling a "dry pond" of self-expression. How the quest to be "perfect" and "holy" makes it difficult to acknowledge when we've been abrupt or defensive.Lauren and Trey demonstrate how they moved past the "He Said/She Said" semantics to find resolution:Why trying to prove "what really happened" is a dead end in relationship repair. How a walk back to the hotel and a "highlights and booboos" check-in led to a dual apology.Trey explains the power of leading with, "I apologize for the impact of my words; that was not my intent," and how that simple phrase allowed Lauren to drop her own defenses. Are you tired of getting stuck in the weeds of "who said what"?If you are ready to learn tools like Intent vs. Impact and move toward a messy, authentic, and highly connected partnership, Lauren offers a trauma-informed approach to relational coaching.Request your free 15-minute consult at sexedforyou.com/freeconsult.About ThemLauren and Trey are partners living in Central Virginia, where Lauren owns and operates Sex Ed for You. After such an incredible show of support from the fans on the High Road before kick-off, the 3-0 collapse feels like a crushing blow. We discuss how it remains vital to keep the faith, even when the on-pitch performances make it increasingly difficult to do so week in, week out. The conversation then turns to a familiar frustration: the refereeing. We vent about the officiating Tottenham continually receive, asking why the tight decisions always seem to go against our favour, especially when we are fighting tooth and nail for our top-flight survival. Facing the grim reality of our situation, Jack and Gavin also look ahead to the unthinkable. We consider what life might actually look like for Spurs in the Championship, and debate the ultimate question: if the worst does happen and we drop down a division, would the owners actually see fit to sell the club? It is a tough, heavy discussion that isn't overly optimistic, but right now, as a severely struggling fanbase, we simply need a space to lick our wounds. A @Christadelphians Video: *[Watchman Report: A High Road to Iran]*In this thought-provoking Watchman Report, we undertake an insightful expositional journey into a remarkable end-times prophecy. We examine Isaiah chapter 19, a passage that reveals a future of unexpected peace and divine blessing in the Middle East after the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. This outstanding prophecy foretells a "highway" linking Egypt, Israel, and Assyria—a corridor of worship and unity. We explore the historical context of these ancient empires and present a compelling case for their modern identities, with a specific focus on how ancient Assyria corresponds with the nation of Iran today. This presentation offers a powerful, Scripture-based perspective on the "new beginning" that awaits the world under the reign of Christ.Join us for this revealing and insightful biblical analysis of current events.*Video Chapters / Timestamps*00:00 - Introduction: A Biblical Perspective on Current News01:15 - The "New Beginning" Prophecies02:57 - Reading Isaiah 19:22-2503:44 - The Historical Fulfillment Question04:39 - God's Complex Relationship with Egypt and Assyria06:55 - Assyria's Role and Modern Identity08:05 - The Latter-Day Fulfillment: A Highway to Iran09:54 - The Prophetic Context of Christ's Kingdom10:43 - The Personal Application: Our Relationship with God12:02 - The Essential Step of Belief and Baptism13:34 - Conclusion and Encouragement*

His ability to paint mental pictures has been compared to Raymond Carver, Flannery O'Connor, and even Norman Rockwell. His laid back, conversational singing style has been likened to Don Williams, Guy Clark, and John Denver. So, when the easy softness of this southern baritone delivers these lyrical short stories, it's no wonder that both his peers and journalists alike call Daryl Mosley a “songwriter's songwriter.”Daryl writes and sings about life as he knows it: small towns, rural churches, salt-of-the-earth people, family, and faith. He leans heavily on songs about the victories and challenges of everyday people because these are HIS people. For over three decades, the combination of these exquisitely crafted songs along with his understated delivery and gentle personality has been engaging music lovers in a way that few artists can. Mosley still resides in his hometown of Waverly, Tennessee - the small, Mayberry Esque hamlet just west of Nashville where he grew up. The experiences of life, work, faith, and love that resonate so strongly in this community are the very foundation of his songwriting. And when he sings those songs, the characters and scenes come alive as if they were sitting on the front porch with you. Music legends from Tom T. Hall and Ronnie Milsap to Bill Gaither and Rodney Crowell have praised both Mosley's singing prowess and his gifts as a songwriter. Mosley's songsmith abilities have led to him being honored four times as the industry's Songwriter of the Year, twenty #1 songs, and three Song of the Year awards. Other artists who have recorded his songs include - Lynn Anderson, Bobby Osborne, High Road, the Booth Brothers, and The Grascals. Songwriting legend Jerry Salley says Mosley is “easily one of the finest songwriters in our business.” Throughout the 1990s, Mosley toured as the lead vocalist with the much-celebrated Bluegrass group New Tradition. In 2001, he joined the legendary Osborne Brothers. In 2010, he formed the band The Farm Hands who quickly became one of the most awarded acts in Bluegrass. This marriage has taken him to the pinnacle of musical stages and venues ranging from the Grand Ole Opry to the legendary Bluebird Cafe to even West Point Military Academy. In 2020, Mosley stepped more directly into the spotlight with the release of his first solo project for Pinecastle Records -'The Secret of Life.' It was a collection of eleven songs written or co-written by Mosley that were both plain spoken and lyrically clever. The album reached #1 on the Roots Music Report as did the first single, “A Few Years Ago” and the spiritual “Do What The Good Book Says.” Critically acclaimed by both the media and industry peers, The Secret Of Life was praised by American Songwriter Magazine, SiriusXM, Bluegrass Today, Country Music People, Bluegrass Unlimited, MusicRow, Country Standard Time, No Depression, and more. The November 2021 release of Mosley's 'Small Town Dreamer' album featured a dozen original songs including three that reached the #1 spot on the charts; the nostalgic “Transistor Radio," the heart tugging “Mama's Bible” and the spiritual “He's With Me" that hit #1 on Cashbox Magazine's chart. In July of 2023, Daryl released his third solo album, 'A Life Well Lived.' The acclaimed album reached the top of the album charts as well as garnering three #1 songs: "Mayberry State of Mind" (along with the hit music video), as well as gospel chart toppers "The Bible in the Drawer" and "Big God". In 2024, Mosley released his current album, "Long Days & Short Stories."  The project is his fourth for Pinecastle Records and features the #1 songs "Me and Mr. Howard," "When the Good Old Days Were New," and "When I Can't Reach Up." Daryl Mosley remains a towering figure in roots music—crafting songs that feel both ancient and immediate, offering comfort and connection through his heartfelt stories and songs shaped by Southern tradition, Christian faith, and small‑town warmth.

What if you could diagnose exactly where you are on the happiness scale—and why? In this groundbreaking episode, Harry Loyd unveils his brand-new "Subjective Life Quality Index"—a 7-stage chart that maps human happiness from rock bottom (0) to enlightenment (10+). Dr. Alex Loyd calls it "as good, if not better" than Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Erikson's Stages of Development, and Kübler-Ross' Stages of Grief. This is the chart's first public presentation. You're seeing it before it's even digitized. ✓ What You'll Discover: ✓ The 7 stages of subjective life quality (0-10+) and where most people get stuck ✓ Why "waiting on the world" (7) is a transitory stage you can't stay in ✓ The "empty cup" trap (5-6): dependency, anxiety, and the "I'll be happy when..." cycle ✓ Why most people are stuck at a 5 (the dependent/anxiety zone) ✓ The honeymoon effect: why happiness from worldly things only lasts 5 minutes to 6 months ✓ Learned helplessness (3-4): the depression zone and why it's sustainable (which makes it dangerous) ✓ Destructive behavior (1-2): hedonism, materialism, narcissism—when desires become needs ✓ Rock bottom (0-1): disillusioned—but why this stage can actually move you UP ✓ The two paths from "waiting on the world": deserving vs. contending ✓ Jacob (8): when pain becomes meaningful and suffering minimizes ✓ The High Road (10+): enlightenment, fulfillment from BEING not achieving ✓ Fragmented intent: the "last enemy" that keeps you from staying at 10+

In life there are some things that are unfortunately unavoidable, especially when you reach any level of success, make any kind of self improvement, become a better student, athlete, competitor…..the list is endless. What are these unfortunate things, you ask…and by the way I say unfortunate because they are difficult, they will hurt you, cause you pain, but they are not bad, and as always we are going to find the good in them. The unfortunate things we are talking about today are gossip, people saying things behind your back that they would never say to your face, and criticism/judgments from people who never even met you. “What other people think about me…..is none of my business.” This is the toughest concept we will talk about today. What other people think about me is none of my business. We can't control what people think, say, or do….we can't make people see through our eyes, or be able to see through theirs. We can of course seek to understand, to know that the person trying to drag us down has most likely been dragged down by someone else. It's not an excuse for the behavior, but it does let us look at someone trying to harm us with compassion instead of hate. It can allow us to free ourselves from the cage of resentment that they are trapped in. How can we fly if we allow ourselves to be caged by negativity, self doubt, and pettiness. Especially when the cage door for all those things is always open if you look hard enough. You can always rise above! Choosing the Road Less Traveled/Choosing the High Road is about rising above, making the effort to find a different, more difficult, but more rewarding path. It requires more from you, requires all your focus, will cause you to slip and fall, and it will hurt. The reward for this however is the refinement of your character, the strength you gain by forging your own path, and the company you meet along the way. Yes there are much fewer people on the high road, but they are some amazing people, they will change your life for the better, they will lift you up, push you forward, and love you because they are on the same path as you….and they have had the same rocks thrown at them from the low path as you have. Like you they choose to rise, each and every day. The high path has the better view, it is the one the sun hits first, it's the one the flood waters don't reach, it's the one that illuminates the path ahead, it's the one with the best views. You can see and be grateful for all the amazing things ahead of you, the low path is crowded and slow moving, it does not have any elevation because it only goes in slow circles at the bottom of the mountain…..the trick is you can't tell because you are too focused on the person in front of you to look up to the heavens that are above you. “My advice to you, to me, is don't forget to look up. When the world tries to bring you down, when people hurt you, say things that are untrue, keep looking up, keep moving forward, onward, and upward, keep climbing, keep rising. You are meant to fly……you just need enough height, space, and courage to spread your wings.”

What happens when country headlines collide with hard radio data and a lightning-rod debate about replacement singers? We open strong with legacy-name scandals and the messy myths that follow artists, then pivot to why High Road became the most-played track and how Morgan Wallen still blankets the airwaves. From Garth Brooks saluting KISS to arena tours and heartfelt tributes, we trace the lines between genre, showmanship, and what actually moves listeners to hit replay. We get honest about a stat no one likes: only five songs by women cracked country radio's top 50 this year, and most were features. Is that bias, taste, or risk-aversion? We unpack the label incentives, production choices, and fan habits that tilt playlists toward male voices—and where the breakthroughs really happen when women lean into sharper narratives and bolder arrangements. If you're a programmer, artist, or fan who wants more balance, you'll find practical takeaways to nudge the system forward. Then we light the fuse: name a replacement singer better than the original. The board fills with ACDC's Brian Johnson, Journey's Steve Perry, Van Halen's Sammy Hagar, and Queen with Adam Lambert. Instead Abby breaks the cardinal rule of going backstage to keep an eye on Jeanette and eventually starts taunting Ava. This brings out Energy Dance head Gina who gets into it with Abby over her unprofessionalism. Not to be outdone, Holly also gets into a major fight with Abby. Holly addresses the photoshoot issue from earlier in the week directly to Abby, and Abby begins to insinuate that Nia needs her more than she needs Nia. But a line was clearly crossed and Holly becomes more angry than we've ever seen on the show to date.At the very least the girls put on an incredible showcase this week with their performance of Stomp the Yard. Somehow despite a truly weird gimmick and much hand wringing over how bad the jumpsuits were, it's arguably one of the best dances in ALDC history! And hey, not only do we get no more Christi and Kelly flack next episode, it's also Jojo's ALDC debut next week! Things might not be looking good at the ALDC, but they're looking better at the Barre!Quotes“I did talk to one 3D person this week. Well that's good." (02:35-02:39 | Christi & Kelly)“Please don't take anything I say as medical advice. Please consult WebMD like a good person." (10:26-10:32 | Christi)“When people ask me if there was anything nice, yes. When Chloe was three she was Abby's screensaver for a while, and then Broadway Baby replaced her, which is fine!" (29:08-29:15 | Christi & Kelly)“I've never known that woman to take the high road in my life. She's like hold on, is there a road that goes under? Like a sub-road that's underneatht he road itself? I wanna go on that road!"
