The title is kinda giving it away already, so please make sure you are prepared for that.Listen now to the very last episode of Asia In The Shadows before it goes on an indefinite hiatus.Thank you for the support you have shown in the last 10 months. The Lunar New Year celebrations in 2019 were supposed to be a joyous occasion especially in the Cao Family home. Daughter, 22-year-old Cao Mỹ Duyên, was home from university and was helping with the family business. On the 4th February, she headed over to a customer near her residence in Điện Biên. She was delivering chickens as per the order that was placed that same afternoon. Little did her family know, that would be the last time they'd see Duyên whose fate was sealed the moment she agreed to make that delivery.Listen now to the whole story here on Asia in The Shadows. If you like to support my podcast, make sure to rate and review us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts:Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3rLhGCi Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3ItWvf0 You can also make a one-off donation through this link:https://ko-fi.com/aitspod Also, make sure to follow Asia In The Shadows is on social media:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/aitspod/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/aitspodcast Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aitspod/ Music Credits:Displaced Memories - David HorowitzCursed House - Sergey CheremisinovDISCLAIMER:The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia. Junko's case is one that will be told over and over again not necessarily because the harrowing details of her last 44 days are interesting. The details are horrifying and nightmare-inducing, in fact. I think the reason we come back to Junko's case a lot of times is because we can see pure evil unfolding and destroying a life so full of light and potential just because the perpetrators lacked humanity and empathy so much that some did not even consider them humans anymore. As a woman, I also see how Junko's case, an extreme case of femicide, demonstrates yet again that a woman saying NO is not necessarily a safe woman. Junko dared to say NO to a bully and paid for it with her life. May this serve as a reminder that women trying to get away from violent situations and relationships cannot always simply do so without wider repercussions.Listen now to learn more about this truly horrifying case, here on Asia In The Shadows.————Try out and sign up for Podmachine now by going to www.podmachine.com and use my code ASIAINTHESHADOWS to get 1 free episode credit. If you like to support my podcast, make sure to rate and review us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts:Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3rLhGCi Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3ItWvf0 You can also make a one-off donation through this link:https://ko-fi.com/aitspod Also, make sure to follow Asia In The Shadows is on social media:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/aitspod/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/aitspodcast Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aitspod/ I also host another podcast called LAGIM: A Filipino True Crime Podcast. Xulhaz Mannan was a proud gay man in Bangladesh, which made him one of just a few people who decided to own and live their truth in a very conservative and predominantly Muslim country. But Xulhaz went a step further than that. He created the first and only gay rights magazine of Bangladesh and organised a Rainbow Rally to promote equality and freedom. This made him and fellow activist Mahbub Tonoy moving targets for a group of radical Islamists who did not take kindly to anyone they deemed anti-Islamic. For their passion and decision to create a safe space for their community, Xulhaz and Mahbub paid the ultimate price.Listen now to learn more about this story here at Asia In The Shadows. If you like to support this podcast, make sure to rate and review us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts:Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3rLhGCi Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3ItWvf0 Also, make sure to follow Asia In The Shadows is on social media:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/aitspod/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/aitspodcast Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aitspod/ Music Credits:Displaced Memories - David HorowitzCursed House - Sergey CheremisinovDISCLAIMER:The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia, the hosts of the program or other programs of the network. The Philippines is a country rich in culture and history. That history goes far back and is characterized by both pre-colonial achievements, 300 plus years of Spanish rule and post-colonial turmoil. A lot of the problems the Philippines still experiences today have their roots in our colonial past. The Jabidah Massacre is no different. But apart from its roots in our colonial past, the Jabidah Massacre is a story of an overly ambitious and yet morally questionable government, of an ethnic group being deceived for selfish reasons and a historical claim to a piece of land that, arguably, should probably just be left alone. As a result of this massacre, not only did the Philippines see a weakening of our relations with an important Southeast Asian neighbor, but a worsening of internal relations with our Muslim Filipino brothers and sisters, as well. And yet some individuals still believe that the massacre never happened.Listen now to know a bit more about this historic crime that changed the course of Philippine history in a substantial way. Please note that this is the final episode of this season. Less than four weeks ago, Pakistanis woke up to some horrific news out of Sialkot in Punjab. The images and videos uploaded on Twitter and YouTube by locals from the area showed a mob beating a single man who could barely defend himself. What was his sin?The actions were incomprehensible and forced Pakistanis to look inward and to inspect the laws of the land. With the rise of far-right and extremist ideologies all over the world, it is now Pakistan's turn to have a long look at the compromises it makes that further legitimise elements in its society that lead to destruction, death and international disrepute. Please note that if you do google the videos and images of the crime perpetrated in this case, consider yourself warned as the images are very triggering.Asia In The Shadows is on social media:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/aitspod/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/aitspodcast Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aitspod/ Music Credits:Displaced Memories - David HorowitzCursed House - Sergey CheremisinovDISCLAIMER:The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia, the hosts of the program or other programs of the network. South Korea in the 1980s was going through a lot of changes. Whilst protests were breaking out in the capital just years before, a rural town called Hwaseong had other things to be worried about. The small town was forced to deal with a series of killings that started in 1986.The killer targeted women of all ages and even became so brazen as to invade one girl's home for the purpose of killing her. The police in Hwaseong were under immense pressure to catch this menace with the little resources they had. Instead of pursuing several leads, they focused on one unlikely suspect that in the end had to suffer their ire whilst the true murderer roamed free. This episode contains details of sexual assault, so please take care of yourself whilst listening.Asia In The Shadows is on social media:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/aitspod/Twitter - https://twitter.com/aitspodcastFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/aitspod/Music Credits:Displaced Memories - David HorowitzCursed House - Sergey CheremisinovDISCLAIMER:The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia, the hosts of the program or other programs of the network. Futoshi Matsunaga grew up in a well-to-do family, with a loving mother and grandmother. He was poised to inherit the family business from his father and he seemed to be a hit with the ladies as well. He was charming and also smart. On the surface, it did not look like he was lacking for anything and yet deep down inside, Matsunaga nursed a taste for sadism and murder.Matsunaga would commit some of Japan's most horrible crimes that the media back then did not feel comfortable, reporting about the extent of his depravity and crimes. Pınar had just graduated from university and had plans to move back home in time for Eid. What was supposed to be a short shopping spree at the local mall turned into an intense 5-day search for the young woman from Bitlis. Where had Pınar gone and who was she with? At a time of social upheaval in many parts of the world and during a global pandemic, Pınar's case would force Turkey to do some introspection and evaluation as to the treatment of women in Turkish society. Despite living under a government hell bent on curtailing women's rights, it seems that women in Turkey will continue their fight that Pınar, unknowingly, helped start.Asia In The Shadows is on social media:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/aitspod/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/aitspodcast Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aitspod/ Music Credits:Displaced Memories - David HorowitzCursed House - Sergey CheremisinovDISCLAIMER:The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia, the hosts of the program or other programs of the network. It is one of the most baffling and mysterious crimes ever to shake Malaysia to its core. The story of Mona Fandey sure started as, perhaps, a harmless tale of a woman who dreamt of stardom but ultimately failed. However, this case about a popstar wannabe quickly devolved into a story involving witchcraft, greed, political ambition, dismemberment and a promise that no one ever truly dies.Music Credits:Displaced Memories - David HorowitzCursed House - Sergey CheremisinovAsia In The Shadows is on Instagram @aitspodDISCLAIMER:The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia, the hosts of the program or other programs of the network. Singapore is the epitome of Asian modernity. What was once a former British colony and battle ground for a guerilla war in the 1950s, now evolved into a prosperous and peaceful island state. However, even in the most peaceful of places there is bound to be evil and crime and this was certainly true in 1980s Singapore. The satellite town of Toa Payoh would awaken twice to horrible news of murders and the realisation that they had been living near neighbours who believed their dark deeds to be of service to certain gods.Music Credits:Displaced Memories - David HorowitzCursed House - Sergey CheremisinovAsia In The Shadows is on Instagram @aitspodDISCLAIMER:The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia, the hosts of the program or other programs of the network. Thailand, at the end of the Sino-Japanese War, became home to a few Chinese immigrants who were looking to settle down in a new home. One of the immigrants looking for a new life was a lanky man named Si Ouey. He fought in the war but wanted to start a better life after experiencing the harrowing nature of being on the battlefield. Little did the Thai know, however, that their new neighbour, who mainly worked as a gardener when he first arrived in Thailand, would not remain the quiet and mysterious Chinese man for long. His name would become synonymous to that of a boogeyman, stories of which used to scare naughty children into behaving. But are the murderous stories about Si Ouey really true? Decades later, the handling of Si Ouey's case by the Thai would be out into serious question.Music Credits:Displaced Memories - David HorowitzCursed House - Sergey CheremisinovAsia In The Shadows is on Instagram @aitspodDISCLAIMER:The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia, the hosts of the program or other programs of the network. Ever heard of that urban myth from Macau about how a restaurant in the 1980s started serving char siu buns that were not made at all with pork fillings...but with human flesh instead? Whilst the jury is still out about whether this story is truly just an urban myth, the restaurant was very real. When restaurant owner Zheng Lin decided to have a night of fun, drinks and gambling with a Chinese mainlander, he could not know that this would become the start of not only financial problems and stress but a prelude to a horrific crime that would make his restaurant infamous not only in little Macau but the whole world.Music Credits:Displaced Memories - David HorowitzCursed House - Sergey CheremisinovAsia In The Shadows is on Instagram @aitspodDISCLAIMER:The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia, the hosts of the program or other programs of the network. Asia In The Shadows is a true crime podcast hosted by Filipino-German Christine Abrigana. Christine is also known as the host of Lagim: A Filipino True Crime Podcast. She is a former lawyer, an avid traveller and someone who is fiercely proud of her Filipino and Asian roots. This was the main reason why Asia In The Shadows was created. This podcast will highlight crime stories from all over Asia, the largest and most diverse continent on the planet. In a genre that is largely dominated by Western podcasters and stories. True crime as a genre is therefore in need of a fresh infusion of stories from Asia that will not only look at the individuals involved but also at the unique cultures they find themselves in. As diverse as Asia is, some human conditions remain uniform and relatable for everyone - a reason to listen to this podcast no matter where you are from.Updates and additional true crime content can be found on our Instagram page @aitspod, so please make sure to follow us there.Music Credits: David Hilowitz - Displaced Memoriess9x1cYn2k3TEDVM10Fhx Hosted on Acast.
