This special episode of the Tough Girl Podcast brings together three incredible women—Tori James, Jo Bradshaw, and Rosemary J Brown—for an inspiring conversation about legacy, mountains, and the enduring spirit of women in adventure. We're diving deep into the story of Junko Tabei, the first woman to summit Mount Everest in 1975, and celebrating the 50th anniversary of her historic climb. Despite her groundbreaking achievement, Junko's name is still unfamiliar to many. Tori, Jo, and Rosemary are determined to change that. In this episode, we talk about how Junko inspired a life-changing all-female expedition to Yala Peak in Nepal, the launch of the First Females Podcast (May 16th 2025), and the wider mission to highlight the stories of women who were the first from their countries to stand on the roof of the world. You'll hear about: Rosemary's journey to the mountains in her 70s. Tori's return to Nepal, 18 years after climbing Everest. Jo's vision for a meaningful anniversary tribute. The power of visibility, representation, and saying yes to adventure—at any age. This episode is a beautiful tribute to Junko's legacy, a reminder of the power of community, and a call to action for anyone ready to find their own summit. #MyJunkoJourney *** Past episodes with Jo, Tori & Rosemary: Tori James - https://www.toughgirlchallenges.com/single-post/2015/09/29/tough-girl-tori-james-first-welsh-women-to-climb-everest  Rosemary J Brown - https://www.toughgirlchallenges.com/single-post/brown-1  Jo Bradshaw - https://www.toughgirlchallenges.com/single-post/2016/09/15/tough-girl-extra-catching-up-with-mountaineer-expedition-leader-jo-bradshaw-discussing-he  Jo Bradshaw TGP Extra - https://www.toughgirlchallenges.com/single-post/jo-bradshawtge  ***  New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! Make sure to subscribe so you never miss the inspiring journeys and incredible stories of tough women pushing boundaries.  Do you want to support the Tough Girl Mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media in the world of adventure and physical challenges? Support via Patreon! Alors on relativise. On rationalise. Japan's Top Business Interviews Podcast By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Previously she was General Manager Nutrition and Health BASF Japan, Deputy Region Head Asia Pacific and Sales Head Japan, BL Home & Personal care, Ciba Inc. She has a BA in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Tokyo University and an MBA from INSEAD Her leadership philosophy reveals a thoughtful, people-centered, and culturally nuanced approach. As President of Croda Japan, her leadership has been shaped by decades of experience in global pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals firms, combined with personal growth from early cross-cultural exposure and a prestigious BA and MBA. A defining trait of her leadership is her ability to balance Western assertiveness with Japanese cultural sensitivity. Early in her career, she learned to speak up in meetings, even when it clashed with her upbringing in a non-confrontational, hierarchical Japanese context. A Swiss boss challenged her to be more vocal, and she gradually developed a calm yet firm communication style that gained the trust of colleagues, even when challenging senior staff. She emphasizes walking the talk—being consistent in behavior, showing up during crises, and demonstrating care for her team's wellbeing. Trust, she believes, is not built overnight but earned through shared problem-solving, consistency, and a leader's visible presence in tough times. Rather than exerting authority, she invites collaboration, especially valuing input from her team to inform decisions. She also brings a strong sense of inclusion and empathy into her leadership. She openly discusses the importance of recognizing people's strengths, acknowledging vulnerability, and cultivating a workplace culture where everyone feels heard. Small gestures like writing birthday cards and casual lunch chats contribute to her warm, approachable presence. A trailblazer for women in leadership, she reflects on the pressures many women feel to be perfect. She advises women to release those unrealistic standards and accept help—at home and at work. For men, she encourages active support and understanding, noting that caregiving and work-life balance issues are not gender-exclusive. As a leader in Japan, she has had to bridge global and local expectations. She promotes change subtly, through example and steady reinforcement, rather than dramatic reforms. Her leadership is situational, adaptive, and anchored in trust, humility, and the belief that developing future leaders is a key responsibility. Her style is a model of modern leadership in a Japanese context: authentic, inclusive, and quietly transformative.

From the moment she arrived until the moment she departed, she left an indelible mark on our dojo, our dojo community, and on me. For the past 15 years I have thought about her often and certainly every year on May Day, my favorite holiday. After she left our dojo and Idaho we would communicate a few times a year through social media. Then one day it stopped and I heard the news...  Junko left the party of life.

Our guest today is a local running and coaching legend here in Colorado who is also well-known worldwide. Junko Kazukawa came late into the running world, but has been a prolific endurance athlete, while exuding tons of positive energy. This year alone she completed the Leadwoman challenge – all of the Leadville running and biking races – which included her 10th LT100 run finish, then finished the very difficult Tor des Géants 200-miler in Italy, ran rim-to-rim-to-rim in the Grand Canyon, and currently has the NYC Marathon on-deck. In 2015, she became the first person to complete Leadwoman plus the 100-miler Grand Slam – Western States, Leadville, Vermont, and Wasatch – all in the same year. She did this on the heels of a second breast cancer diagnosis. This has given her the wonderful perspective of if there is something you want to do, don't wait, just do it, you never know what will happen tomorrow. And then her philosophy that cancer takes away a lot, but it gives you so much more. Junko also talks here about the interesting topic of how suffering through a tough ultramarathon makes her feel more alive. Her infectious positive energy has created a huge following for her both at her races and in her coaching, and Junko Mountain Training is not only the training regimen for many of her athletes, but has become an Internet sensation, too. Junko with her running and coaching has also generously supported the Susan B. Komen Foundation, the Leadville Legacy Foundation, and several individuals battling cancer themselves. Across the trackless expanses of the northwestern frontier zones, far beyond the final vestiges of Great Qing sovereignty or protection, independent, oasis trade hubs survive and even thrive across central Asia during the chaos of the 16th & 17th centuries. They and their denizens, though largely cut off from the rest of the wider world, nevertheless serve a vital – though fragile – linkage between east and west. Here, north of the Taklamakan Desert, the Oirat Mongols continue to live much as they have these past several centuries… until a group known as the Dzungars under a rising leader called Batur Hong Taiji will start dreaming bigger: an Albany Plan of Union… with Mongol characteristics… Time Period Covered: ~1680 CE Major Historical Figures: Four Oirat/Dzungar Mongols: Baibagas Khan [r. 1585-1640] Chechen Khan (Ochirtu) [r. 1640~1670] Zaya Pandita [d. 1662] Khara Khula [d. 1634] Batur Hongtaiji [r. 1634-1653] Sengge [r. 1653-1671] Queen Anu of the Khoshuts [~1653-1696] Boshoghtu Khan (Galdan) [1644-1697, r. 1671-97] Other Mongols: Altan Khan of the Golden Horde Jasaku Khan of the Khalkhas Dge-lugs-pa Tibetan Buddhist Sect: The 5th Dalai Lama (Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso] [1617-1682] Great Qing: The Kangxi Emperor (Aisin Gioro Xuanye) [r. 1661-1722] Major Work Cited: Amitai-Preiss, Reuven & David O. For over 170 exclusive minisodes, check out icmap.co.ukFor 44 days, Junko Furuta was held captive by a group of four high-school dropouts. The boys were bored, the boys were angry… And the boys were pure evil. Over the course of more than 6 Weeks, they were violent to Junko on more than a thousand separate occasions - causing so much harm to the girl that she regularly begged for them to end her life - but the boys refused… And the boys continued. For more than 1000 Hours, they subjected Junko to a world of unimaginable torture, humiliation, sexual abuse and manipulation. They bragged about their crimes and also invited others to partake in the mayhem - with between 30 and 100 extra attackers becoming involved over the Month. All of this was done before the boys ended her young life in the most brutal of fashions and further degraded her dead body. Though they had dismantled Junko physically, her spirit remained unbroken and was now free. What's almost equally as disturbing is that all four boys - now men - walk the streets freely, today. And three of them have since been re-arrested at least once. With many believing that the group have been responsible for other tortures, other rapes and other unsolved murders… Hosted on Acast. Junko Furuta, a 17-year-old student living in Misato, Saitama Prefecture, Japan was beautiful, popular, and a great student who her friends endearingly called 'Jun-Chan'. Junko did not smoke, drink, or participate in any "bad teenage behavior" which is why she was often called a good girl. Her beauty and kindness unfortunately caught the eye of the school bully, 18-year-old Hiroshi Miyano. When Hiroshi asked Junko on a date, she politely declined, and did not realize this would ultimately lead to her final 44 days of life involving the most horrendous, inhumane torture. Hiroshi and his friend, Nobuharu Minato devised a plan to kidnap Junko as she was biking home from work. They captured her, and four friends (Hiroshi Miyano, Nobuharu Minato, Jo Ogura, and Yasushi Watanabe)  held her hostage for 44 days at Minato's parents' vacation home before finally being murdered. The suffering Junko endured at the hands of these four boys and others was so cruel that it's hard to fathom how four teenage boys, let alone any monster, could dream up and enact such a plan.
