Ron Baetiong, Founder of Podcast Network Asia, and Jeremy Au discussed: Philippines Basketball Jock to Founder Exit: Ron shared his early life as a basketball jock raised in a lower-middle-class Filipino household by his single mother. Determined to achieve the Filipino dream of owning a house, Ron worked in a call center at 18 while studying at the University of Santo Tomas. Ron's time at Groupon (2011) taught him foundational sales skills that later became pivotal. He launched his first startup, a nightlife app called Partyphile, inspired by his personal pain points as a clubgoer. Despite initial traction with 50,000 users, the business struggled with monetization. By 2016, Ron pivoted to Chatbot.ph, leveraging the emerging chatbot market. Within a year, the company was acquired by Sterling Paper Group, allowing Ron to fulfill his dream of buying his mother a house. 2. Startup Failure Lessons: His journey revealed key lessons about being a solo founder and the importance of monetization strategies. Ron shared how missing opportunities to sell club tables—a lucrative revenue stream—hindered growth. The business faced a turning point in 2016, following a tragic incident at a major rave event and political shifts under Duterte's presidency that dampened the nightlife scene. Transitioning to Chatbot.ph, Ron capitalized on timing and his ability to build quick MVPs. By mid-2017, the company generated over $10,000 in monthly revenue and attracted investors, leading to its acquisition. Ron highlighted how this pivot taught him to prioritize building strong teams and focusing on cash flow. 3. Podcast Network Asia & Serye FM In 2019, Ron founded the podcast HustleShare to document startup journeys and give back to the Philippine ecosystem. He expanded this passion into Podcast Network Asia (PNA), which grew to manage 320 shows, including exclusive collaborations with Spotify, paying $20,000 per show annually. However, Spotify's strategic pivot in 2023—ending exclusivity deals—led to significant financial strain for PNA. In response, Ron launched Serye FM to address the growing demand for localized audio content. Serye FM adopted a paywall model within Spotify, enabling Filipino listeners to access serialized audio series. With 100% month-on-month growth over five months, Serye FM has emerged as a rising star. Ron's teaming with co-founder Rexy Dorado, formerly of Kumu, reinforced the platform's potential to replicate its success. Jeremy and Ron also talks about the grief of losing his co-founder in 2023, managing platform risks with Spotify, and his plans to scale Serye FM from the Philippines to the U.S. === Watch, listen or read the full insight at www.bravesea.com/blog/ ph-founder-podcast-lesson Nonton, dengar atau baca wawasan lengkapnya di www.bravesea.com/blog/ ph-founder-podcast-lesson 观看、收听或阅读全文,请访问 www.bravesea.com/blog/ ph-founder-podcast-lesson Xem, nghe hoặc đọc toàn bộ thông tin chi tiết tại www.bravesea.com/blog/ ph-founder-podcast-lesson Get transcripts, startup resources & community discussions at www.bravesea.com WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VakR55X6BIElUEvkN02e TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jeremyau Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremyauz Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeremyau LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/bravesea Spotify English: https://open.spotify.com/show/4TnqkaWpTT181lMA8xNu0T Bahasa Indonesia: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Vs8t6qPo0eFb4o6zOmiVZ Chinese: https://open.spotify.com/show/20AGbzHhzFDWyRTbHTVDJR Vietnamese: https://open.spotify.com/show/0yqd3Jj0I19NhN0h8lWrK1 YouTube English: https://www.youtube.com/@JeremyAu?sub_confirmation=1 Apple Podcast English: https://podcasts.apple.com/sg/podcast/brave-southeast-asia-tech-singapore-indonesia-vietnam/id1506890464

As you probably heard, 35-year-old Jullebee Ranara, a Filipina who had to move to Kuwait to make ends meet and support her family as a domestic worker, was brutally killed in 2023.She was tortured, raped, and murdered. As if this grueling ordeal was not enough, Jullebee's heartless perpetrator even burnt her body, threw his victim in the desert, and ran her over with a vehicle.Based on a report from Vice World News, there are over 268,000 Filipinos currently working in Kuwait, most of which consist of domestic workers. The Kafala system governs migrant workers in Kuwait, and various human rights group says that the Kafala system is a legal framework utilized in most Gulf states that authorizes employers to have full control over the legal status of migrant workers. Unfortunately, Jullebee Ranara's gruesome murder is not the first incident that happened to a Filipino in Kuwait. This recent incident appears to have caused a ton of frustration in how the Kuwaitis view less of Filipinos. It is unacceptable and should not be tolerated by the international community. There have been infamous crimes in the Philippines that have happened during the holiday season.A particular case that comes to mind is the heartless killing of mother-and-son Sonya and Frank Gregorio from Tarlac. Former policeman Jonel Nuezca had a verbal altercation with the Gregorios after the former policeman was arresting Frank for illegal possession of "Boga," an improvised noisemaker cannon. Sonya, his mother, came to her son's aid, and the altercation with Nuezca promptly escalated.Nuezca ended up shooting both victims, and it became one of the most infamous crimes in 2020.Three holiday seasons later, we noticed two separate peculiar cases that happened during the week of Christmas 2023 and New Year 2024.What's bizarre about these cases was the gruesome nature that the two victims had gone through on separate occasions, where the culprits behind their killings beheaded the victims.Given that these gruesome cases are similar, we decided to cover both crimes in one episode, a first of its kind in our show.CONNECT WITH US▸ https://linktr.ee/phmurderstories Here are links to our social media accounts, case photos, episode notes, and sources!YOUTUBE▸ www.youtube.com/phmurderstories DISCORD SERVER▸ https://bit.ly/3n38Tuh IG CHANNEL▸ https://ig.me/j/AbaOmN2HytgKay0F/ SUPPORT OUR SHOW ON PATREON▸ www.patreon.com/phmurderstories DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and positions of Podcast Network Asia. Violence in Philippine politics, especially in this modern era, has been a serious issue that has continued to hinder the country's path to political maturity, therefore raising more doubts about an ineffective justice system that is slow and, in other instances, can be bought by influential and powerful clans. However, the subject of our episode today involves a troubled medical professional who went to great lengths to seek revenge. On July 24, 2022, in what was supposed to be one of the most eventful occasions a family could have in their lifetime, former Lamitan City Mayor Rose Furigay was attending her daughter Hannah's law school graduation at Ateneo De Manila University. Bypassing campus security was Dr. Chao-Tiao Yumol, who was armed with a .45-caliber pistol, managed to get close to his target and ended up killing the former mayor, her executive assistant, Victor George Capistrano, and a campus security guard, Jeneven Bandiala, who risked his life attempting to stop the assailant. The former mayor's daughter, Hannah, was also shot but was able to survive. We've seen that one iconic scene in horror movies before—the protagonist, either being chased or needing to hide, goes under their bed, trying their best to stay quiet as the killer roams around. Some survive, but some end up getting dragged away from under the bed... to their death. Fortunately for a Filipina nurse named Corazon Amurao, almost the exact scene happened to her in real life in 1966. She survived Chicago's most infamous mass murderer, Richard Speck. Richard Sta. Ana, a father and loving husband, sought justice for his wife, Pearl, and their son, Baby Denzel, after two assailants brutally killed them by mercilessly bludgeoning their heads at their residence in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. As the investigators looked for answers, they surprisingly found out that the person behind the gruesome murder was someone they already knew from the start who was holding a grudge because of jealousy. This case in 2016 might have been one of the most overlooked murder cases ever. A mother and her baby boy were gruesomely murdered on a typical afternoon inside their residence. It is not something we get to hear or read on the news on a daily basis. Air disasters are one of the most heartbreaking tragedies that will always catch our attention. Probably you've heard of numerous of these cases, such as the infamous 9/11 terrorist attack on the US World Trade Center, the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, and many others. Such incidents make us wonder are there plane-related tragedies that have also happened in the Philippines? Sadly, there is. On April 19, 2000, Air Philippines Flight 541 from Manila, bound for Davao City, crashed in a coconut plantation on Samal Island near the plane's destination. All 131 people on board, including passengers and the aircraft's seven-member crew, died, making this catastrophic incident by far the worst air disaster in the Philippines. Our show usually features cases where the victim is already confirmed dead. While plenty of tragic cases still need to be told, a specific case caught our attention. The incident happened on November 1, 2018, in Atimonan, Quezon, where the victim, Roger Herrero, a pedicab driver from the town of Agdangan, was falsely accused of a crime he didn't commit. Rogue policemen hunted down Roger, bringing him to a dark area in Atimonan, an hour away from Agdangan. From there, Roger was forced to admit to various robbery cases in his town, but the policemen ended up shooting him in the head. Roger, who was lying in a pool of his blood at the time, had to play dead till the rogue policemen left. Miraculously, the gunshot to his head wasn't fatal enough to kill him. Baguio City is known for being the summer capital of the Philippines when thousands of visitors from the lowlands and Manila take their annual journey to the city to cool off. However, little did we know that one of the most gruesome crimes in the country's special summer getaway would happen on August 15, 2018. The body of 22-year-old Lindsay Valdez, a pawn shop cashier at 202 Cellfone Pawnshop, was found dead inside a vault room covered with her blood. Authorities also discovered that the victim's neck was slashed, and her face, arms, and legs were bound with packaging tape. On November 22, 2000, Salvador "Bubby" Dacer, a prominent publicist to politicians, met with then-President Joseph Estrada, who was in the midst of an impeachment trial. The meeting was said to be about patching things up. In context, Dacer was a former PR man of Estrada, but as soon as he left his post, he began criticizing the Estrada administration for alleged corruption. Two days after meeting Estrada, Dacer and his driver, Emmanuel Corbito, were abducted at an intersection in Makati City. Months later, their bodies were found in a creek in Indang, Cavite, as the entire nation discovered the horrific nature of their deaths, known today as the infamous Dacer-Corbito Double Murder case. On August 3, 1999, typhoon Olga wreaked havoc all over Southeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula. More than 160 lives were taken by the deadly typhoon in North and South Korea. According to reports, the typhoon brought one of the heaviest rains recorded in the Korean peninsula that cost $657 million in damages. In the Philippines, the devastating storm caused one of the most catastrophic landslides in the country, particularly the tragic Cherry Hills Subdivision landslide in Antipolo City, Rizal, destroying 300 homes, taking around 60 lives, and displacing thousands of people. The perpetrator in the hijacking of Philippine Airlines Flight 812 that happened on May 25, 2000, using the name “Augusto Lakandula” as his alias, committing one of the most bizarre hijacking incidents in history, as some would say the Filipino version of D.B. Cooper. For those who don't know, D.B. Cooper is a criminal who, in 1971, hijacked a commercial plane traveling from Portland, Oregon, to Seattle, Washington, and later parachuted out of the aircraft with the ransom money. Up to this day, nobody knows the real identity behind D.B. Cooper or whether he's still alive or not. He just mysteriously vanished. There have been various instances across the globe in which a person had predicted their eventual death. A brief google search would show you that some notable celebrities and artists had also bizarrely predicted their demise, which in some cases were nerve-rackingly accurate. Sadly, you will find the name of the late comedian and activist Arvin "Tado" Jimenez on the list of famous individuals who had foreshadowed their own death. Before Tado's sudden demise, he posted two Instagram posts that were somewhat eerily captioned, which most people thought of it as a premonition to Tado's time on earth was running out. On February 7, 2014, Tado was among the 14 people that died after the bus they rode bound for Bontoc, Mountain Province, fell into a ravine. Today, March 24, is Tado's birthday. On June 28, 2015, the body of Tania Camille Dee was found buried in a shallow grave wrapped in a blanket with a plastic bag over her head in the backyard of a house located at Sta. Maria Subdivision, Barangay Balibago, Angeles City, Pampanga. Autopsy reports indicate the suspect ruthlessly shot her in the back of the head. She was only 33 years old at the time of her gruesome death. Tania Camille Dee was reported missing on June 21, 2015. The day before, she went out to meet her estranged ex-husband, Fidel Sheldon Arcenas, citing that the latter promised to give her money to purchase a car as a present so she and their two children could have a vehicle to use. An obtained CCTV footage from a restaurant in Angeles City that day confirmed that Tania met and left the venue with her ex-husband between 5:00 and 6:00 pm. It was the last time she was seen alive. The use and distribution of illegal substances have been an ongoing problem since drug cartels figured out how to grow their syndicates into multimillion-dollar empires. Drug syndicates thrive on their customers' addiction caused by narcotics, which has become a very dangerous cycle that doesn't seem to end. In a generation where rave parties have been a massive occurrence for social events, it is well-documented across the globe that many people, particularly teenagers and young adults, take party drugs while participating in rave parties. But what happens if a person or group mistakenly consumes a party drug that an average human body couldn't withstand? An example of this happened during the 2016 Closeup Forever Summer Concert held at the Mall of Asia concert grounds with more than 15,000 people in attendance. Tragically, five people who didn't know each other were reported to have bizarrely collapsed minutes apart at different venue areas. As soon as the initial autopsy reports came out, the results shocked the entire nation, exposing drug-related personalities from privileged families with political connections that later turned on each other. On November 18, 2009, one of the most controversial road rage incidents and manhunts of the 2000s happened in the Philippines. The victim, in this case, was Renato Ebarle Jr., a son of a former presidential chief of Staff, Renato Ebarle Sr. He was shot and killed by Jason Ivler, a nephew of singer and songwriter Freddie Aguilar. Witnesses saw the suspect go over to his victim's car and shoot him multiple times after a traffic altercation at the corner of Boni Serrano Street and Ortigas Avenue, Quezon City. With various witnesses pinpointing Jason Ivler as the killer, he became one of the most wanted criminals at the time, in what others may argue was one of the most infamous manhunts in the Philippines. Authorities and news outlets began their due diligence in figuring out who Jason Ivler was, and what they found out was shockingly outrageous. Digital Forensics was unheard of in the early 1990s. Its breakthrough has led to various crime-solving practices that most law enforcement agencies worldwide utilize nowadays. It makes us wonder, how did it evolve in the first place? Well, in our episode for today, you'll find out why. In 1991, the murder of Julie Snodgrass in the Philippines was the case that paved the way for the evolution of Digital Forensics. Agents from the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center based in Maryland, USA, were the ones who helped solve the case and opened the gates for solving crimes through digital means. Have you wondered why bad things happen to good people? It shatters our hearts when uncalled-for things happen to people with golden hearts. In October 2016, Gerardo Maquidato Jr. was one of the driver awardees of Grab Philippines recognized for giving a courtesy ride to a sick passenger. His story went viral after the passenger's family posted about him on Facebook. Divine Lactao Ornum booked a GrabCar for her sister, Prima, who was on her way to Quezon City to pick up blood bags for her dialysis. Luckily, Maquidato was in the area and was less than a minute away. The model Grab driver picked up his passengers but did not ask for payment for the trip out of kindness. Unfortunately, a year after winning the award, Maquidato became a victim of one of the most gruesome killings of a Grab driver in the Philippines. On August 6, 2008, just a few moments before celebrating her 23rd birthday, Tara Santelices and her best friend Joee Mejias were heading home from a gig. Both took a Rizal-bound jeepney ride. Little did they know back then that it would be the last jeepney ride that Tara would ever take as a robber ended up taking her life into his own hands, making this incident one of the most tragic jeepney robberies. Tara Santelices lived an inspiring life. She had a lot of goals and aspirations ahead of her promising career, but it only took one gunshot to take her away from her dreams, friends, and family. Hostage-taking situations are one of the most discussed cases in the Philippines. After all, most of these kinds of incidents in the country conclude very badly and, in other instances, deadly. The incident at the Taguig Hall of Justice in 2007 caught the entire country's attention as a movie stuntman, and his common-law-wife held four people hostage for an entire day, ironically, inside a place where people expect justice. Hostages were punched, kicked, and pistol-whipped; hostage-takers were seen looking for ways to escape, and the SWAT team's operations were nationally-televised. Indeed, the incident was filled with drama, confusion, and twists. Kristelle "Kae" Davantes was a 25-year-old hardworking professional filled with high hopes and dreams, only to be disrupted by a group of heartless men capable of committing sinister acts to make ends meet. Kae's demise in 2013 was one of the most horrific cases in the Philippines. She was robbed, abducted, strangled, stabbed, and thrown off a bridge. Her killers didn't even give her a chance to live. Thus greed prevailed over their conscience. CONNECT WITH US ▸ msha.ke/phmurderstories Links to our social media accounts, case photos, episode notes, and sources are found here! Have you watched the hit horror movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose? If yes, have you ever wondered if someone from the Philippines has experienced the same thing or even worse? Well, if you have, the story of Clarita Villanueva comes to mind. She was a 17-year-old orphan from Bacolod that moved to Manila in the early 1950s to work as a maid at first, but after eloping with a man who turned out to be married, Clarita left him and ended up working as a prostitute in hopes of improving her living situation. One night, Clarita mistakenly offered sexual services to an undercover police officer. She was promptly arrested and detained at the 300-year-old Bilibid Prison in Manila, which had a lot of unpleasant memories, a place with a considerable amount of detainees who have suffered and died through the years. Little did the people back then know that the Old Bilibid Prison would also be where the infamous demonic possession of Clarita Villanueva happened. On July 15, 1997, Gianni Versace, one of the world's most respected and admired fashion icons, was on his usual early morning routine, getting coffee and magazines at his preferred cafe three blocks away from his posh mansion in Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, Florida. Afterward, Gianni Versace went back home, and as soon as he reached the marbled front steps of his mansion, a dark-haired man wearing knee-length shorts, a gray tank top, a baseball cap, and a backpack came from behind and shot him twice. The police identified the perpetrator to be Andrew Philip Cunanan. Prior to killing Gianni Versace, Cunanan was already on the FBI's Top Most Wanted list for the murders of four other victims in the past three months. As soon as news reports came out on the shocking murder of Gianni Versace, it jolted the entire world. The world-renowned fashion icon's death set off a nationwide manhunt for Cunanan. On January 18, 1961, one of the most infamous murders in the 1960s jolted the entire nation after news reports came out about a policeman who committed suicide after shooting his very own wife, daughter, and son-in-law. This story features the Cabading family murders. It was a tragic case of a father's wrath that turned into a deadly rampage. Pablo Cabading, the father, persuaded Lydia, his daughter, and Leonardo Quitangon, his son-in-law, to stay and live at his residence on Zapote Street located in Makati, which was then part of Rizal province. What seemed like adjusting to a father-in-law's eccentricities turned out to be more than that, as Pablo was a very difficult person to deal with. He refused to let his daughter and her husband live freely on their own, so to keep the family intact, blinded by rage, he ended up murdering his family. In February 2014, a gruesome incident happened in the town of Ampatuan, Maguindanao, that shocked locals in the area after investigators discovered a mutilated body of a middle-aged woman without her internal organs. Unfortunately, this wasn't the first time that a notorious crime happened in Ampatuan, as the area was more infamously known for being the site of the Maguindanao Massacre, one of the Philippines' deadliest bloodbaths and one of the world's worst killing incidents of journalists. The Lunar New Year celebrations in 2019 were supposed to be a joyous occasion especially in the Cao Family home. She was delivering chickens as per the order that was placed that same afternoon. On New Year's Eve of 2011, 35-year-old Reynaldo Dagsa, a Barangay councilman from Caloocan City, requested his family to wake him up before midnight to join in on the new year's festivities in the wonder of the fireworks around them. He was taking pictures of his wife, daughter, and mother-in-law outside their home on New Year's Day when the gunman, Arnel Buenaflor, came from behind a car and cold-bloodedly shot Dagsa on his right forearm and chest. What makes this case peculiar is that the victim was able to snap a photo of his family seconds before the suspect pulled the trigger on him. Every generation has had its own share of "It" girls. These icons were trendsetters when it came to fashion and lifestyle, and everyone who's anyone wanted to be like them; or even have just a whiff of their aura. Their legacies stood the test of time. They would eventually be known for years, even decades beyond their lifetime. During the 1950s in the Philippines, one such "It" girl was Elvira Manahan.
