Episode 328: On June 30, 2009, the serene waters of the Rideau Canal in Kingston, Ontario, revealed a dark and tragic secret. A submerged car discovered that day contained the bodies of three teenage sisters—Zainab (19), Sahar (17), and Geeti (13) Shafia—along with their father's first wife, Rona Muhammad Amir (52). What initially appeared to be a tragic accident soon unravelled into a chilling tale of premeditated murder. The perpetrators, Mohammad Shafia, his second wife, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, and their son, Hamed, were arrested on July 23, 2009, and later convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Shockingly, the victims were Mohammad Shafia's daughters and his first wife. This heinous act, driven by twisted notions of family honour, shocked the nation and highlighted the grim reality of honour-based violence. Join us as we delve into the harrowing details of the Shafia family murders, a case that not only captivated Canada but also sparked crucial conversations about domestic violence and the challenges faced by immigrant families in preserving their cultural values while integrating into a new society. Everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet-star-crossed lovers from warring families who died for their love. This may not be that exact story, but it plays out in a very similar wayJaswinder Sidhu grew up in a very wealthy, strict, traditional Sihk household in Maple Ridge Canada. She was encouraged to grow up to be a good wife and mother and bring honor to her family. But Jassi wanted independence and on a trip to Punjab, India, she meets the man of her dreams, a rickshaw driver named Mithu, and her family, when they find out, are furious. This was not a man that, in their eyes, would ever be good enough to be in their family, and they would do anything in their power to stop Jassi and Mithu from being togetherB.C. mother, uncle face extradition in Sidhu killing. It was a tremendous privilege to sit down with best selling British author, activist and public speaker Dr. Jasvinder Sanghera. Jasvinder escaped from a forced marriage and has spent the better part of her life helping others escape, and fighting honour based violence and forced marriage. It is a powerful conversation about her own personal journey, as well as the impact Jasvinder has made on British law, in schools and with law enforcement to break the cycle of turning a blind eye to abuse in the name of “culture”.Amanda and Alex invite you to join in on a very timely conversation of culture, religion, and women's rights and freedoms, but do warn that this could be a difficult listen and encourage you to protect yourself first and foremost.Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed by our podcast guest are their own and do not necessarily reflect the views of the hosts or the podcast. PLEASE READ: You may find some of the topics and subjects discussed in this week's show upsetting or triggering, including abuse, rape, incest and physical violence. While these subjects and conversations are tough, they are also necessary and reflect genuine problems in the world today, and must be discussed more widely. Nina Aouilk is a life coach, TEDx speaker and author, who devotes herself to highlighting the atrocities of honour killings, gender violence and human trafficking that are happening on her own doorstep. Nina's crucial work in these areas has not come from theories or study, but from her own terrifying experiences in life - events that began when she was an infant, and which have extended into her adult life. Nina recounts the harrowing story of her life in order to present the reality of the underlying horrors still unfortunately alive in society today. But the conversation is also an empowering one, as Nina has taken her personal pains, and though her life might be at risk to do so, she has used this pain to help others and to bring attention to the darker side of life for so many sufferers. A hard-hitting and hugely powerful episode! KEY TAKEAWAYS As a child, we are subtly conditioned by those who raise us into believing our true worth, by the actions they perform and the connections we have with them. For Nina, her early life was almost modern slavery, but she accepted this because she knew no different. The inside knowledge of what it truly means to have suffered can never be entirely learned through study. Experiencing it for yourself provides you with a whole new level of understanding and empathy. The strongest of these people are the ones who can make the most remarkable difference in helping others. If a situation is causing you enough pain and turmoil that you feel the need to ask someone else if it's okay, then it is already not okay. In society we often see things that are not okay, but we fail to act because we assume that someone else will deal with it. This needs to stop. We must always ask if we think something is wrong. We must always check to see if others are okay. This is the only way the world can change for the better. Recognising our own true value in the world. Comes from recognising the goodness we have inside. No matter what other people say about us, our true worth is something we instinctively know about ourselves. BEST MOMENTS 'My mother instilled into me that I was not worth anything' 'I value the ability to empathise or value how another person feels' 'Once I discovered the love I have for myself, I found the strength to say "You can't miss that part of your story out' 'You're part of the problem. You're not part of the solution if you're not saying something. A call could save someone's life' ‘All of the other people who've told me I'm not good enough - none of that matters' VALUABLE RESOURCES On A Mission - https://omny.fm/shows/on-a-mission Nina Aouilk - http://ninaaouilk.com Nina Aouilk Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nina_thebrit/ London's Life Coach Instagram - https://instagram.com/londonslifecoach?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= Nina Aouilk LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nina-aouilk/ Nina Aouilk Twitter - https://twitter.com/ninaaouilk Nina Aouilk You Tube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCacjC0A-fpIzGmy9YbGeF0g ABOUT THE HOST Not so long ago, life was barely recognisable for Ellie McKay, raising three children under five, battling post-natal depression, facing redundancy and walking into the job centre to claim benefits with a double pram, no confidence, and wracked with insecurities. Nina Aouilk joins us on The AJ Roberts Show to share one of the most incredible and inspirational stories we've ever had on the show. As a child Nina survived having her life taken as part of ritual honour killings, as well as being beaten within an inch of her life, forced in to marriage and treated like in the most inhumane ways possible - all whilst living in the UK! Today, Nina is a strong activist against these honour killings that are still happening on our streets as we speak, raising awareness into the severity of it as it's never showcased in the media. Despite all of the atrocities, Nina is a phenomenal international speaker, sharing her story around the globe, and now one of London's top life coaches working with celebrities and elite athletes to help them become the very best versions of themselves. In this episode fashion stylist and activist Payzee Mahmod gives an intense and moving account of a young life etched with horror, pain but now also, years later, with hope. Payzee was just 15 and living in South London when her Kurdish father ordered her to marry a stranger twice her age. Her 17-year-old sister Banaz had already suffered the same fate. Whilst Payzee lived her own nightmare with an abusive husband, Banaz managed to run away from hers. When she later began a relationship with another man, her punishment was to be abducted, raped and murdered. With a police investigation underway, Payzee was then able to escape her own forced marriage. Banaz’s death, as she puts it, enabled her freedom. But the awful truth about what happened in January 2006 then became apparent. Banaz and Payzee’s father and uncle, along with other male relatives, were later convicted and sentenced to life for her murder – a so called honour killing. Payzee now devotes her life to a campaign to make all forms of child marriage in the UK illegal. This is Payzee’s story told with heartbreaking detail, clarity of thought and driven by a breathtaking, awe inspiring sense of purpose. Sign Payzee’s petition: https://www.freedomunited.org/advocate/safeguard-futures/ Payzee’s Crisis Cures:1. Creativity – If I’m not in the best place I want to make something.2. Social media - For me, it’s where I’ve really found a great deal of support and friendships. I never knew that speaking out and telling my story would encourage so many young, especially Kurdish girls and women to tell me their stories.3. Walking with my dog just soothes and calms me.Links:Payzee’s website: https://www.payzeemalika.co.uk/ Chat with Payzee podcast: https://www.payzeemalika.co.uk/podcast Savera UK: https://www.saverauk.co.uk/ IKWRO: http://ikwro.org.uk/ Freedom United: https://www.freedomunited.org/ Payzee’s petition: https://www.freedomunited.org/advocate/safeguard-futures/ Episode notes:This episode is, at times, a difficult listen. At several points in our conversation I struggled to find an adequate response to Payzee’s eloquent and painfully honest description of her young life. How does someone survive or cope with all that Payzee and her sister Banaz endured? What perhaps struck me most deeply was the inexplicable absence of support for Payzee and, of course, her sister. How could an ordeal lived in plain sight in modern day London be ignored so often and so comprehensively? By schools, shopkeepers, the registrar who married her and, of course, the police. As Payzee said: “It blows my mind that not one person in my life asked if I was ok.” What is also astonishing is that Payzee has only recently been able to find and receive the professional help she needs. She now, thankfully, has a Kurdish counsellor who understands the multi layered complexity of her experience. Payzee is determined, on Banaz’s behalf, to campaign for an end to all forms of child marriage. Through her passionate activism she has turned the oppression that killed her sister, into an inspiring, powerful tool for good. As Payzee puts it: “My sister deserved better. What happened to her and what happened to me – it can’t happen to other girls. That’s what drives me.” Stream/Buy ‘Allies’ by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bm Some Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.uk

For this episode of Social Justice Warriors, Matt Buckley interviews award-winning Jordanian journalist/activist Rana Husseini, who is the author of the book Murder In The Name Of Honour. The book and the interview are about the problem of so-called "honour killings". A so-called "honour killing" is the murder of a person for supposedly bringing shame or dishonour upon her or his family and/or the family of the person with whom the victim is in a relationship. Of the victims of so-called "honour killings", the overwhelming majority are female and a small percentage are male. So-called "honour killings" are usually committed by members of the victim's family. However, there are also cases of so-called "honour killings" of which the perpetrators are family members of a person with whom the victim is in a relationship.
