From Karbala to Gaza, from Yazid to today's rulers, this episode forces us to ask the question—are we witnessing injustice or enabling it?The Sheik doesn't just remind us of the tragedy—he aligns it with the events of today. As the 10th of Muharram passes again, let's confront these uncomfortable parallels between past betrayal and act upon what as a Ummah must do.
July 11th, 202515th Muharram 1447Friday Jumu'ah Khutba* The Shi‘a and some Sufi/Sunni communities commemorated the tragedy of Karbala, symbolizing the struggle between justice and tyranny.* Imam Husayn (a) offered to leave peacefully when rejected by the people, but refused to surrender to an unjust ruler or flee in humiliation.* Husayn's refusal to pledge allegiance to Yazid was a vital moral and spiritual stance, representing divine truth and justice over tyranny.* Accepting Yazid would have symbolized the defeat of moral principles.* Imam Husayn (a) declared that humiliation was not acceptable for the family of the Prophet, as God and the righteous reject obedience to oppressors.* A local dispute arose around a public display of Husayn's quote “Never to humiliation” at the Jaffari Community Centre, where neighbours and the local community misinterpreted the meaning behind this universal message* This slogan embodies global resolve against oppression, urging peoples to resist injustice peacefully, as explained earlier in the lecture* It does not represent, encourage, condone, or relate to any form of violence* We invite the local community and neighbours to reach out and learn more about this message and Husayn's struggle for freedom, rather than making assumptions or spreading misinformation* The message of Karbala is universal and continues to inspire oppressed people worldwide to stand against injustice.* Conveying the message of the oppressed, like Lady Zaynab and Imam Zaynul ‘Abidin did, is a vital part of resistance against false narratives.* Highlighting modern parallels to historical episodes of oppression, especially media bias and suppression of voices criticizing Israeli actions in Gaza, where labels of Anti-Semitism are used to silence valid criticisms of a government systemDonate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

Please listen to this and forward it in Wajid Shaikh's soothing voice, describing the final moments of Imam Hussain on the day of Ashura in Karbala
Our heartfelt condolences to you all on the sorrowful tragedy of Ashura. Together, we mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as), along with his noble family and loyal companions. This week, we're honoured to be joined by the esteemed Sheikh Jaffer H. Jaffer from Toronto, who guides us through the deeper meaning of Imam Hussain's (as) mission. His courageous stand against Yazid son of Mua'wiyah, reshaped the trajectory of Islam and inspired generations. What does it mean to act with nobility in the face of certain loss? In this episode of History Speaks, host Roshan Iqbal speaks with Dr. Cyrus Ali Zargar, Al-Ghazali Distinguished Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Central Florida, about his powerful new book The Ethics of Karbala. Whether you're familiar with Karbala or learning about it for the first time, this episode invites you to reflect on the enduring power of principled resistance.
How do we introduce Imam Hussain (as) to others? Why don't more people know about such a monumental figure in human history? Have we failed as a community in bringing his message to others? This week, we're joined by Ahmed's brother, Mohamedali, and Muntazir Rai - both key figures within Who is Hussain (www.whoishussain.org). They talk to us about their learnings from transmitting the message of Karbala to the non-Muslim, how to approach the conversation and how we can improve it.Utilise Who is Hussain's resources this Ashura/Muharram: https://whoishussain.org/share/To support Who is Hussain: https://whoishussain.org/donate/

Shahadat of Sons of Hazrat Muslim bin Aqil (a)Wednesday June 18th 202522nd Dhul Hijjah 1446 AH* Muslim bin ‘Aqil's martyrdom marks the beginning of the Karbala tragedy, and his two sons, Muhammad and Ibrahim, were martyred brutally about a year later.* The Quran's 31st chapter is named after Luqmān, an Abyssinian sage known for his wisdom, though not necessarily a prophet.* Allah granted Luqmān wisdom and used his words of advice in the Quran to teach key values to humanity.* Luqmān's first advice to his son is Tawhid: never associate partners with Allah, as shirk is a grave injustice.* He reminds his son about Qiyāmat: that even the smallest deeds will be brought forth by Allah for judgment, reinforcing accountability.* Luqmān stresses the importance of establishing prayer as an act of submission, gratitude, and seeking divine support.* He instructs his son to command good and forbid evil, showing concern for the moral wellbeing of society.* Luqmān emphasizes patience as essential for fulfilling duties and withstanding hardships and opposition.* He teaches humility in behavior: do not act arrogantly, be moderate in walking, and keep the voice gentle and low.* Allah adds advice about gratitude to parents, obedience within limits, and how Muslim bin ‘Aqil's sons embodied strong faith, duty, patience, and sacrifice even in hardship.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)
Shahadat of 5th Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir (AS)6th Dhul Hijjah 1446 AHJune 3rd, 2025* Imam Muḥammad al-Bāqir (a) was known for his depth of knowledge, as described by the Prophet (s): “he will dig out knowledge the way it should be.”* A narration highlights the Imām referencing the “Book of ʿAlī” as the most authentic source of knowledge, emphasizing divine revelation through Jibrāʾīl.* In a hadith, the Imām categorized actions into four groups: ladders of good deeds, penalties for sins, major sins, and elements of salvation.* Good deeds include initiating salām, feeding others (especially the needy), and praying at night when others are asleep.* Penalties that erase sins include doing wuḍūʾ in cold weather, walking to congregational prayers, and maintaining regular prayers.* Major sins include obeying greed, following one's desires, and self-conceit or arrogance—each warned against in the Qur'an.* Elements of salvation are fearing Allah in private and public, being moderate in wealth or poverty, and speaking justly in pleasure or anger.* Imam al-Bāqir (a) was poisoned in early Dhul Ḥijjah by the ruling powers who, after Karbala, resorted to covert assassination of the Imams.* As his wafāt neared, he asked that women recite marsiya for him in Mina for ten years, linking his memory to the tragedy of Karbala.* Imam al-Bāqir was five at Karbala and never forgot the trauma; he is buried beside his father in Baqīʿ, and his demolished shrine remains a cause of grief for believers.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)
Friday Juma KhutbaMay 23, 2025- Migration to North America has unintentionally promoted multiculturalism, evident in the diverse ethnic makeup of religious communities.- Shi‘a diversity has been noticeable in weekend school students since the late 1970s and 1980s.- As the community developed, full-time Islamic schools have emerged, reflecting similar ethnic diversity.- There are now 16 full-time Shi‘a Islamic schools across Canada, from Montreal and Ottawa to Toronto and Vancouver.- This growth has created a need for collaboration and networking among these schools.- In January 2024, the first global gathering of full-time Shi‘a schools was held in Karbala, with 60 schools from places like Indonesia and Australia represented.- On the sidelines, North American schools formed WISE CANADA (World Islamic Summit of Education, Canada) to promote cooperation in Canada and the US.- WISE CANADA will hold its first national meeting tomorrow at As-Sadiq Islamic School.- Networking helps schools share best practices, recognize challenges, and develop solutions.- Qur'anic verse 9:71 highlights the mutual support, righteousness, and obedience expected among believing men and women.- A call was made to embrace diversity and avoid isolation.- UN Secretary General highlighted the severe suffering in Gaza, with 80% designated as militarized or evacuation zones.- 160,000 pallets of aid (equivalent to nearly 9,000 trucks) are waiting to be delivered.- Canada, the UK, and France strongly condemned Israel's military actions and settlement expansion in Gaza and the West Bank.- They warned of further actions if Israel does not stop military offensives and lift aid restrictions.- UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy halted free trade talks with Israel, calling its rhetoric and planned military actions extreme and unjustifiable.- Foreign ministers from multiple Western and allied countries, plus the EU, issued a joint statement urging Israel to restore humanitarian aid flows.- They criticized a proposed Israel–US aid system for bypassing the UN, arguing it politicizes and undermines humanitarian relief efforts.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

Yaum-e-Gham 1446 AHEve of 12th Shawwal 1446 AHThursday April 10th 2025- The destruction of Jannatul Baqi took place on 8 Shawwāl 1343 (2 May 1925) by the Wahhabis, targeting the graves of the Ahlul Bayt, companions, and others in Medina. - Wahhabi ideology sees respect shown at graves as shirk, failing to differentiate between worship and reverence. - If not for fear of global backlash, Wahhabis might have demolished the Prophet's grave and incorporated it into the mosque. - A fatwa from Wahhabi scholars states that prayer in a mosque containing a grave is invalid, and graves must be exhumed and relocated. - The Qur'an shows that expressions of humility, like bowing or prostrating, are not inherently acts of worship. - ‘Ibādat (worship) is defined as humility expressed toward someone believed to be God, true or false. - Prostration (sajdah) was commanded by Allah to the angels for Prophet Ādam and done by Ya‘qūb and his sons for Prophet Yūsuf, proving it's not always worship. - Building shrines or visiting graves of righteous figures is not worship but an expression of respect and love. - No Muslim visits the graves of the Prophet or Imams with the intention of worshipping them—rather, it is a spiritual connection. - Despite the light and glory of shrines in Najaf, Karbala, Kazimayn, Samarrah, and Mashhad, Baqi remains desolate—yet the love for the Ahlul Bayt continues through remembrance and grief, especially for Sayyida Fatima.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)
Eve of 21st Ramadan 1446 AHMarch 20th 2025- Imām ‘Ali's silence during the 25 years of the khulafā' was intentional; he did not accept their legitimacy but refrained from armed conflict for the greater good of Islam while offering guidance in Qur'ānic and judicial matters. - He described his exclusion from the caliphate as unjust, yet he chose patience over conflict, despite feeling deep pain and witnessing the plundering of his rights. - Imām ‘Ali invested in reviving barren lands, digging wells, and planting palm trees, dedicating much of his wealth as endowments (waqf) to support his family and the needy. - His charity extended beyond land development; he also focused on the emancipation of slaves, personally freeing a thousand with earnings from his own labor. - His personal lifestyle was one of extreme simplicity, despite his wealth; he ensured that leaders lived modestly so that the poor would not feel deprived and the wealthy would remain humble. - Despite being a ruler, he sealed his simple food to prevent any addition of luxury, emphasizing that a just leader should live like the weakest member of his community. - His killer, Ibn Muljim, was described as "the most wretched of people," yet Imām ‘Ali instructed his family to treat him kindly, even sharing his own food with him. - During his final moments, the doctor confirmed that his fatal wound was beyond healing, advising only milk as sustenance, which Imām ‘Ali shared with his assassin. - His funeral was conducted in secrecy, attended only by family and loyal companions due to fears that enemies would desecrate his grave. - His daughter Zaynab witnessed not only his secret burial but also the tragedies of Karbala, where the body of Ḥusayn was left unburied in the open plains. The Ethics of Karbala: Myths, Modernity, and Virtues of Nobility (Routledge, 2024) investigates the relationship between sacred narratives and the development of character. Focusing on the warrior ethos expressed in accounts of the Battle of Karbala, Zargar searches for the place of the martial virtues in modern life and warfare. This book is the first of its kind in taking a virtue ethics approach to the study of Islamic history. It offers an ethical analysis of arguably the most pivotal moment in Islamic history. To do so, it makes use of interdisciplinary methods, especially global philosophy and religious studies, and draws on philosophical concepts spanning from Nietzsche to Iqbal. The book's clear and engaging prose makes it accessible to readers seeking a profound understanding of intersections between practical philosophy and religious myths. This book targets upper-level undergraduate readers seeking to discover Islamic ethics. It will serve nonspecialists, specialists in Shiʿi Islamic studies, and all those interested in Islamic ethics, virtue ethics, cross-cultural philosophy, Nietzsche studies, military science, and religious studies. Happiness Solved with Sandee Sgarlata. In this episode, Sandee interviews J.R. Martinez. From the battlefields of Iraq to the dance floor of ABC's “Dancing with the Stars”, J.R. Martinez has woven a remarkable tale of resilience and triumph. The Louisiana-born Army Iraq war veteran, and multifaceted talent has defied expectations at every turn, leaving an indelible mark on the worlds of entertainment, literature, and motivational speaking. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Martinez comes from a multicultural background – his mom, a resilient single parent originally from El Salvador, and his dad, of Mexican descent. In 2002, a young and idealistic Martinez embarked on military training in Fort Benning, Georgia, honing his skills as an 11-B Infantryman. In January of 2003, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division and in March of that year, he was deployed to Iraq. Tragedy struck on April 5th, 2003, less than a month into his deployment. While driving in the outsides of Karbala, a roadside bomb engulfed his Humvee, trapping Martinez within, inflicting severe burns to more than 34% of his body and smoke inhalation. Evacuated to Germany and then San Antonio, he spent 34 months undergoing 33 surgeries, including skin grafts and cosmetic procedures. This harrowing ordeal, however, proved to be a crucible, forging his inner strength and igniting a new purpose. Amidst recovery, Martinez discovered his calling as a motivational speaker. Sharing his story with fellow burn survivors, he embarked on a global journey of inspiration, captivating audiences at military bases and speaking for esteemed organizations like Delta and Wells Fargo. He embraced the philosophy of "Adapt & OvercomeSM," a personal mantra that resonated with audiences worldwide. His commitment to giving back extended beyond speaking engagements. Organizations like Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors and Glasswing International found a passionate advocate in Martinez, reflecting his deep belief in community and gratitude. His dedication was recognized through numerous awards, including the Ivy Award for his work with veterans and the National Red Cross Spirit Award. In true Hollywood fashion, encouraged by a friend, he auditioned for "All My Children," landing a three-month role that blossomed into a three-year career, igniting his passion for acting. In 2011, he further captivated audiences on “Dancing with the Stars”, clinching the coveted mirror ball trophy alongside Karina Smirnoff. This triumph opened doors, expanding his platform and solidifying his connection with a loyal fan base. Never one to rest on his laurels, Martinez ventured into writing. His memoir, "Full of Heart: My Story of Survival, Strength, and Spirit," became a New York Times bestseller, proving the power of vulnerability and resonating with readers alike. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue higher education, a milestone that marked him as the first in his family to attend college. Today, Martinez remains a sought-after motivational speaker, balancing his time between travel, veteran non-profits, acting engagements, fitness pursuits, and cherished moments with his wife, Diana, and their children. He continues to spread his message of resilience and optimism, inspiring audiences both on and off stage. Martinez's journey, though remarkable, is still in its early chapters, and the world eagerly awaits what this multifaceted hero will achieve next.
