This week, Jun and Daniel catch up on a whirlwind of events, starting with a frightening story about a fire at Jun's parents' house in Daegu that led to an unexpected fridge-clearing catharsis. Daniel shares observations from his recent trips to a Korean dentist, as well as a recent conversation with his kindergarten that perfectly illustrates the indirectness of the Korean language discussed last week. The hosts also debate the cultural mechanics of eating rice: why do some Korean poke places not give out chopsticks by default, and what is the primary utensil used to eat rice in Korea? If you're interested in the recent online turf war between Korean netizens (“Knetz”) and Southeast Asian K-pop fans (“SEAblings”) over concert etiquette, why Korean national pride during the Winter Olympics seems to be waning, or why Bad Bunny's culturally charged Super Bowl Halftime show might have ruffled some feathers, this episode is for you. We also discuss Korea's first single malt whiskey (Ki One), debate whether vinyl records are genuinely making a comeback or just a leftover "mid-century modern" prop, and reflect on a touching listener email regarding racial blindness and microaggressions. As a reminder, we publish our episodes bi-weekly from Seoul, South Korea. The final run-in continued over the weekend with plenty of dramatics to behold; from FC Anyang's superb win over Ulsan HD to more late Daegu heroics. The podcast takes a look back over all the weekend's action before casting an eye over the upcoming Round 36.   Paul Neat and Matthew Binns return from the weekend commentary booth this week to give their takeaways K League 1 Round 35. Starting from the foot of the table, they talk through ten-man Daegu's last minute equaliser against Suwon FC and what that means given Jeju's 2-0 loss to Gwangju elsewhere.   Then, attention turns to FC Anyang who talk a large step towards survival with a 3-1 win over the Horangi.   There's a look at what's left in Final A, with Daejeon Hana Citizen and Pohang Steelers both taking strides to securing continental football, before attention shifts to this weekend's games.   All this and more, on The K League United Podcast.

Andrew gives his thoughts on the game plus we hear from Magpies boss Eddie Howe and FC Anyang's Thomas Oude-Kotte, before our columnist Claire Evans joins us to tell us about her experience from the stands.   Paul then takes us through FC Seoul's 7-3 defeat to Barcelona before Andrew then walks us through the Spanish Champions second Korea-based friendly, a 5-0 victory over Daegu. We also hear from Barcelona boss Hansi Flick along with Daegu striker Edgar who caught up with our own Jung Muyeol.   [READ: Dark days ahead for Daegu]   Finally, defeating Newcastle in a friendly wasn't enough to turn the attention away from under-fire Ulsan boss Kim Pan-gon, who saw his year at the club come to an end after an eleven game winless run. The reigning K League 1 Manager of the Year had been coming under increasing pressure as Ulsan's title bid slipped away.    Kim has been replaced by former Korea and Indonesia National Team boss Shin Tae-yong, just in time for the weekend fixtures.   [READ: Ulsan HD Appoint Shin Tae-yong]   All this and more on The K League United Podcast!

The police believe it is a clear cut tragic accident, but the victims father uncovers evidence that tells a different story. On March 26, 1991, a public holiday in South Korea, five boys from Daegu—aged 9 to 13—went missing while searching for salamander eggs near Mount Waryong. After missing their taekwondo lesson, their parents initially searched for them, but eventually reported them missing. Unfortunately, police initially dismissed the boys as runaways. Media attention about the lost boys grew, dubbing them the "Frog Boys," and despite a massive search ordered by the president, no trace was found. Hoax calls and inadequate police efforts frustrated the parents. Eventually the boy's fathers even quit their jobs to search nationwide, eventually suspecting a Korean military cover-up as they were followed by intelligence agents. In 2002, the skeletal remains of all five boys were found on Mount Waryong, showing bullet casings, blunt force injuries, and possible bullet holes, suggesting foul play. Police mishandled the scene and claimed hypothermia, a theory experts rejected. The nearby military base, linked to the casings, was never searched, fueling more theories of military involvement. No arrests have been made, and various lawsuits against the police have failed. In 2015, the statute of limitations was lifted, leaving the case open for new evidence. The parents, who buried their sons' ashes together, are still seeking justice. What happened to the Daegu Frog Boys?Sources:Paulo, D. A. (2020, December 22). Episode Summary: In this week's episode of your favorite Korean Adoptee podcast, the Janchi Boys sit down and reflect on three years of the show, how our lives have changed since the trailer, and how the show (and the adoptee community) has changed our lives.Editor's note: I think we toe the line of conflating friends and fans of the show with the interracial, Asian adoptee community at large. For what it's worth, this was not our intent, and sometimes we fall into the trap of using the two somewhat interchangeably because of the time and nature of how the two entered our lives. We are certainly aware of (and grateful for) our elders in the adoptee space, and don't want it to seem like “the Janchi Show started this community” or that we did anything more than add some voices to the conversation.---// Support the Show!Online at janchishow.com / @janchishowSupport the show at janchishow.com/supportJoin our Facebook Group! janchishow.com/afterpartyWatch our Youtube VideosLeave a voicemail! 972-677-8867Write us a note: janchishow@gmail.comThe Janchi Show Quick BioThe Janchi Show focuses on exploring intersectional identities and current events through the lens of adoption, race, lived experience and more.
