Hsiao Bi-khim | 蕭美琴 is Taiwan's Vice President, sworn in on May 20, 2024, alongside President Lai Ching-te. A seasoned diplomat, she served as Taiwan's de facto ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2023, becoming the first Taiwanese official to attend a U.S. presidential inauguration since 1979 when she attended Joe Biden's in 2021. Known as Taiwan's “cat warrior” for her deft diplomacy, Hsiao strengthened U.S.-Taiwan ties, advancing arms sales, trade agreements, and Taiwan's global presence despite China's opposition. Born to a Taiwanese father and American mother, she grew up in Taiwan and New Jersey, earning a BA from Oberlin College and an MA from Columbia University. Hsiao advocates for Taiwan's sovereignty, democratic resilience, and inclusion in international organizations, as seen in her 2025 meetings with U.K. and Israeli delegations.

As society evolves, so do its values and principles, but is that desirable for technology that seeks to build the most reliable, trustless and censorship resistant global settlement layer? Ever since the rise in popularity of Solana with its inflow of retail capital in a memecoin gold rush, Ethereum became even more criticized for sticking true to its core values despite the completely divergent demands of market participants. Moreover, the rollup centric scaling roadmap seemed to further silo attention and cause liquidity fragmentation, driving away value from Ethereum mainnet. Investor sentiment remained cautious after U-S President-elect Donald Trump's threats of tariffs on goods from China, Canada and Mexico - which pushed down large-cap tech stocks. While foreign institutional investors appeared cautious and selling was focused on tech heavyweights - as it was seen as the most effective way to drive down the spot market and profit from futures. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 59-points this morning from Friday's close, at 22,839 on turnover of 5.4-billion N-T. The market closed slightly lower on Friday as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing recouped most of its early heavy losses following a plunge by I-C stocks on Wall Street at the end of last week. Work to Restore Power and Access to Typhoon-Hit Villages Continues The Central Emergency Operation Center says efforts to repair the damage caused by Typhoon Kong-Rey are ongoing. The statement comes as more than 8,000 households remain without power and access to several rural communities remains blocked following last week's storm. According to the center, 8,164 households across Taiwan are still without power and work to restore electricity expected to wrap-up later today. A total of 965,342 households experienced power outages as the typhoon battered Taiwan and several locations remain cut off due to damage to access roads, which continues to hinder progress in restoring (恢復) power. Water supplies have been restored to all 63,016 households affected by the storm. 2nd Taiwanese Volunteer Soldier Killed in Ukraine The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the death of a second Taiwan national in Ukraine. Deputy spokesman Hsiao Guang-wei says his office was able to confirm the death through the International Legion for the Defense of Ukraine. According to Hsiao, the foreign ministry has contacted the man's family and will offer assistance (協助) to them should they need any in dealings with matters related to his death. D-P-P lawmaker Puma Shen has named the volunteer soldier as Wu Chong-da. Shen says the 44-year-old Kaohsiung native was a veteran of Taiwan's Army Special Forces Command and was killed fighting on the frontline in Ukraine. Israel Military Seizes Syrian Citizen The Israeli military says it has carried out a ground raid into Syria, seizing a Syrian citizen involved in Iranian networks. It was the first time in the current war that Israel announced its troops operated in Syrian territory. Syria did not immediately confirm the Sunday announcement. The Israeli military said the seizure was part of a special operation “that took place in recent months,” though it did not say exactly when it occurred (發生). It says the man seized had been under military surveillance for many months and was involved in Iranian initiatives targeting areas of the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. Congo MPOX Shows Signs of Stabilizing Some health officials say mpox cases in Congo appear to be “stabilizing.” It's a possible sign that the epidemic for which the World Health Organization made a global emergency declaration in August might be on the decline. WHO says Congo has reported about 200 to 300 lab-confirmed mpox cases every week recently, which is down from nearly 400 cases a week in July. But the U.N. health agency acknowledges (承認) that only 40% to 50% of suspected infections in Congo were being tested. That was the I.C.R.T. Since 2020 Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense has been reporting the number of incursions China makes by sea and air into Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone. These incursions now happen on a daily basis and already the tally for this year alone has surpassed the total number of occurrences that took place last year in 2023.   Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/psychological-defense-and-practices-to-manage-stress-for-the-people-of-taiwan-a-talk-with-dr-hsiao-wen-lo-ep-296/   Recently, on October 14th, just days after President Lai Ching-te's Double Ten Day speech, China's military initiated the "Joint Sword-2024B" drills, a simulated blockade which took place in the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south and east of Taiwan. According to Taiwan's MND, a record number of 153 Chinese military aircraft were detected around Taiwan within a 25-hour period.   We've previously discussed China's gray zone military tactics and civil defense preparedness, on this podcast, but just as important is something called psychological defense.   In July we brought Talking Taiwan to the 53rd annual Taiwanese American Conference, East Coast that was held at West Chester University. I sat down with Dr. Hsiao-Wen Lo (駱筱雯) who spoke at the conference about Psychological Defense for the People of Taiwan.   We also got into a discussion about the related topics of trauma and practices to manage stress and maintain good mental health.   This episode is sponsored in part by the Taiwanese American Council of Greater New York.   Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: ·   How Dr. Lo got interested in psychological defense ·   What is psychological defense ·   The importance of the mind-body connection ·   Types of trauma: psychological trauma, generational trauma, collective trauma ·   What is psychological warfare ·   The Chinese People's Liberation Army's psychological warfare tactics ·   The impact of long-term stress ·   Post traumatic growth ·   Fight or Flight states ·   Strategies to deal with stress ·   The erasure of Taiwan by China   Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/psychological-defense-and-practices-to-manage-stress-for-the-people-of-taiwan-a-talk-with-dr-hsiao-wen-lo-ep-296/

In this episode of Derms and Conditions, host James Q Del Rosso, DO, sits down with Jennifer Hsiao, MD, associate professor of clinical dermatology at Keck Medicine of University of Southern California, to discuss the multifaceted world of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). From addressing diagnostic obstacles to understanding comorbidities, this episode guides clinicians through the many complexities of HS management. They begin by exploring the diagnostic hurdles associated with HS, with Dr Hsiao sharing insights to help clinicians navigate through potential misdiagnoses. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing subtle indicators of the disease and thinking outside the box when it comes to the location of lesions, as they may present in atypical areas. She also highlights the significance of recurrent history, which can serve as a diagnostic hallmark. Next, the pair discusses comorbidities associated with HS, with Dr Hsiao detailing the importance of inquiring about patients' primary care arrangements. She notes that while dermatologists may not directly manage these comorbidities, they can play a vital role in identifying and initiating the necessary steps toward management. The discussion then moves to the significant psychological impact of HS, emphasizing the necessity of open dialogue with patients about the psychological toll of HS and the benefits of seeking mental health support. Screening tools like the PHQ-2 can aid in identifying patients at risk and initiating necessary interventions. They next address the limitations of current clinical guidelines for HS and the need for a paradigm shift towards intervening earlier in the disease process to prevent irreversible tissue damage. The discussion concludes with the presentation of a clinical scenario describing a patient transitioning from oral antibiotics to a biologic, with Dr Hsiao outlining her suggested approach for such a patient.

Foreign Minister Stresses Taiwan's Presence in Haiti Unaffected by Unrest Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says Taiwan's projects in Haiti are continuing as normal and there are no signs that unrest in Port-au-Prince will affect bilateral relations. According to Wu, diplomatic cooperation with Haiti also appears to be solid (堅固的), as political leaders there likely to take charge following the establishment of a transitional council are all in close contact with Taiwan. Speaking at a legislative hearing, the foreign minister told lawmakers that his office has evacuation contingencies ready and rehearsed, but there is currently no need to withdraw Taiwan nationals from the county. Our guests this week are Cherry Chevapravatdumrong and Teresa Hsiao – writers of Joy Ride, 2023's rowdiest comedy. The film tells the incredibly explicit tale of four friends on a wild journey of self-discovery following a business trip gone awry. Each character has a different relationship with their Asian heritage, which they're forced to confront in hilarious and moving ways as a series of chaotic events sees them travel across the continent. Cherry and Teresa, who met in the writers' room on Family Guy, didn't fill their script with hilarity and depravity, though there's plenty of that. Their script packed an emotional punch too, reminding audiences that “home” is maybe best defined as the place in which we love and are loved in return. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Teresa and Cherry tell us all about the parts of themselves they brought to the page in Joy Ride. We discuss the genesis of its wildest jokes, how they wrote the movie's hilarious K-pop scene and the “Asian good girl” trope they wanted to take a flamethrower to across the course of this story.
