Qandeel Baloch was Pakistan's first social media star. She worked hard and provided for her family. She financed their lives, paying their rent, food, and medical expenses. Her parents loved her. But her brother betrayed her. He was a hypocrite; when her personal details were published, instead of supporting her, he killed her...
‘How I'm looking? Beautiful, sexy, or hot?' One could have easily mistaken these words to be uttered by a Kim Kardashian, a Kendal Jenner or some other young woman on Instagram seeking fame, if only it was not for the broken English. The broken English, how I'm looking, not how am I looking, hides a story much deeper and significant than an appeal for likes on social media. The minor grammatical difference underscores a world altogether different than the one of tiktok stars. These words, as salacious and incorrectly framed as they maybe, mark a struggle if one chooses to read between the lines. These were the very words that gave a woman in Pakistan a new, a life she had always desired. But the very same words were also responsible for snatching away her life from her. This is the story of that woman from Pakistan who simply yearned for a better life; this is the story of Qandeel Baloch.
She was famous, unapologetic, confident and she owned her sexuality. In a society and country where women are mostly not allowed to have agency over their bodies, Qandeel Baloch, a famous internet personality from the Punjab Province, defied all norms. And in the end she paid dearly for it.Listen now to learn more about the colourful life of a woman who broke the rules, inspired many but was silenced by those she made to feel uncomfortable; only here at Asia In The Shadows. If you like to support this podcast, make sure to rate and review us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts:Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3rLhGCi Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3ItWvf0 You can also make a one-off donation through this link:https://ko-fi.com/aitspod Also, make sure to follow Asia In The Shadows is on social media:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/aitspod/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/aitspodcast Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aitspod/ Music Credits:Displaced Memories - David HorowitzCursed House - Sergey CheremisinovIslam Dream - SergeQuadradoDISCLAIMER:The views and opinions expressed by the podcast creators, hosts, and guests do not necessarily reflect the official policy and position of Podcast Network Asia, the hosts of the program or other programs of the network. In 2016, Pakistan's first social media celebrity, Qandeel Baloch, was murdered in a suspected honor killing. Her death quickly became a media sensation. It was both devastatingly routine and breathtakingly brutal, and in a new media landscape, it couldn't be ignored. Qandeel had courted attention and outrage with a talent for self-promotion that earned her comparisons to Kim Kardashian—and made her the constant victim of harassment and death threats. Social media and reality television exist uneasily alongside honor killings and forced marriages in a rapidly, if unevenly, modernizing Pakistan, and Qandeel Baloch's story became emblematic of the cultural divide. In this deftly reported and artfully told account, Sanam Maher reconstructs the story of Qandeel's life and explores the depth and range of her legacy from her impoverished hometown rankled by her infamy, to the aspiring fashion models who follow her footsteps, to the Internet activists resisting the same vicious online misogyny she faced. Maher depicts a society at a crossroads, where women serve as an easy scapegoat for its anxieties and dislocations, and teases apart the intrigue and myth-making of the Qandeel Baloch story to restore the humanity of the woman at its center. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

Qandeel Baloch grew up in a conservative village in Pakistan, a place where it was shocking to see a woman swimming outdoors. She ran away from home, changed her name, and eventually became "Pakistan's first social media star." By 2015, she was reported to be one of the 10 most Googled people in Pakistan. The next year, she was dead. Sanam Maher's book is A Woman Like Her: The Story Behind the Honor Killing of a Social Media Star. Criminal is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX. Qandeel Baloch was dubbed Pakistan’s answer to Kim Kardashian but her story is very different. Her older brother murdered her for bringing dishonour to her family. Journalist and author Sanam Maher pieced together Qandeel’s life from her birth in rural Pakistan to her incarnation as a social media sensation; and she documents the public response to Qandeel’s shocking death, for her book, A Woman Like Her. In her research she spoke to Qandeel’s parents, family, friends and work colleagues. World Policy Institute — Increased urbanization and the spread of social media have facilitated unprecedented political awareness and workforce participation among Pakistani women, but these shifts have been accompanied by growing acceptance of polygamy and a recent rise in honor killings like that of web star Qandeel Baloch. On this week’s episode of World Policy On Air, activist and author Rafia Zakaria considers the complex and contradictory role of women in the country's divisive history.
Qandeel Baloch was a young Pakistani girl who sky-rocketed into the public domain through her use of social media. She's like the Kim Kardashian of Pakistan. A young aspiring model, flaunting herself on the internet and attracting a mass following. She was murdered by her brother. He said it was to protect his honour and that of his family. But this honour killing attracted public outrage – unlike thousands of other honour killings in that country. Why did Qandeela's death cause outrage? What affect has it had on feminism and left-wing politics in Pakistan? To discuss these issues and more, I am joined this week by feminist and socialist activist Aima Khosa. Aima is a journalist for the Express Tribune, which is an affiliate of the New York Times in Pakistan. Aima is also a member of the Awami Workers Party Lahore, the only Leftist political party in Pakistan that came together in 2014 through a coalition of 3 left groups.

Earlier this month, model and activist Qandeel Baloch was found dead in her home in Pakistan. She'd been drugged and murdered by her brother in what he claimed was an honor killing. Baloch was a feminist and a pop star who didn't adhere to local Islamic modesty standards. Her brother claimed that this brought shame upon their family. Baloch's murder was more widely reported in the U.S. than most honor killings. Reactions to the news were varied but demonstrated a broad lack of understanding of the ways in which honor killings are distinct from domestic violence in more individualistic societies. This past May, Muhammad Syed, Sarah Haider, and Mya Saleem of the Ex-Muslims of North America explored those differences in a panel titled, "Examining Honor Culture and Violence in Islam" at the AHA's 75th Anniversary Conference in Chicago. This week, we bring you that panel and part of the Q&A that followed. The full Q&A can be found on the video on the AHA's YouTube channel.
