We observe an area of music neglected by the influx of labels fighting to put our country on the map. A style of electronic music production which pays homage…

Here in NSW, we've hit the end of the lockdown. The sun is shining, and what better way to celebrate this special month with some 2-stepping grooves from Inner West local, @bisoux2050. A staple of Sydney's bass music renaissance, Bisoux is known for her club-ready production and edits, bringing energy and fun back to the original garage sounds. This mix feeds us an hour of unstoppable steppers, wubs, and untzs, with familiar melodies and edits putting both modern and classic UKG sounds on exhibition. After a brief hiatus (almost 1 whole year whoops), the BTRMIX series is back! Bringing us back into 2021 is legend of the scene, Azzawi. FKA Alice D, Azzawi has been pushing a plethora of genres through Sydney for many years. Heavily involved with Asylum, Swerve, and Secret Garden (RIP) Azzawi doesn't lock himself down to any genre or style. Known for his vibey party time sets at Secret Garden, or his dark jungle rhythms at Asylum, no style of music is left untouched. For this mix, Azzawi gives us 1 hour of 100% pure vinyl goodness, exploring the deepest, wonkiest corners of the drum & bass spectrum. Expect minimal beats, future-hop vibes, and heavy basslines as Azzawi gives us our first BTRMIX for the year!
Spring is upon us, and who better to ease us into the warmer days with some beautiful downtempo beats than @mahlomusic. ma lo, a very long time friend of Big Ting, like most DJs we love, has spent the last years traversing a massive range of "bass-based" genres, first coming into our lives via the drum & bass scene, and soon becoming a staple of Sydney and Melbourne's DnB and Dubstep communities. This mix flexes a fresher side of ma lo however. 1 hour of dub-techno, ambient, and microhouse flavours await you with a flawless journey through the downtempo vibes reflective of most of our post-Covid lives today. Rug up under a blanket, get in front of a fire (for the last time this year) and be indulged by the lovely warmth this mix oozes.
S.Tonkin is back to make her own individual mark on the BTRMIX series. Previously, as part of current (but formally named) duo, Ruins (see: BTRMIX009) Sarah is back with an even heavier mix of left-field techno bangers. Since last mix Sarah has cemented herself into Sydney's radio scene, producing Body Promise on FBi Radio, and presenting her own Construct show with partner in crime Askham. With an eclectic taste of music rivaling the greats, S.Tonkin has brought over an hour of elastic percussion-locked grooves, merging her love of UK bass, techno and bass music. Keep an eye out from some new original productions coming soon from @askham-stonkin, we've gotten a cheeky taste already and we're very excited for everyone else to hear what they've been cooking up! You can keep up with everything Construct related here: https://www.facebook.com/Constructmusic/
Coming in hot for this months mix is a dear friend of Big Ting and proud Melbournite @Errorrhythm AKA Bourne Underground AKA Inka AKA maybe something else probably. Two consecutive months in a row?? Yep, we're definitely back for good! This months BTRMIX coming at you hot from isolation. Joining us this edition is another of Sydney's most underrated superstars of the scene @gabriel_espinosa. Gabriel has been kicking it around Sydney for the last few years, first coming up on our radar via his exceptional club ready production skills (check out his SC and tunes while you're here). Those big skills have brought him to DJ residencies at Chinese Laundry and beyond. Showing his wonderfully diverse taste, Gabriel takes us into this mix with a meld of bass driven sounds, breaks, rave, techno on beyond. Lock in!
It's been a little bit of a hiatus on the mix series but we're back, and back with a bang! Bringing us the first of many mixes in 2020 it's one of Sydney's most prominent harbinger's of techno, @mikey-bman. B-MAN, the head honcho of Renegade, has been making waves for the last few years in Sydney, slowly bringing his brand of 'in your face' industrial style techno to the clubs and warehouses alike. Renegade, with humble roots as a midweek club night, has very quickly become a staple for Sydney techno-lovers, hosting the likes of Kobosil, VSK, and a plethora of local talent. Lock in for a techno heavy return to the BTRMIX series as B-MAN takes you on a heavy kick drum expedition.
Ahead of her blisteringly good opening set at last month’s Cool Bunnings party, it only seemed apt to get @niknewbery in to make her mark on the BTRMIX series. Supporting some of the biggest techno and electro acts coming through Sydney right now, Niku is making big waves, thrusting her unique blends of bass music and techno to our ears. This mix is no different, expect warped percussion, ethereal rhythms, and a seriously impressive range of spacey chugs and dancefloor ready breakbeats. You can keep up with all of Niku’s upcoming gigs here: https://www.facebook.com/niikkuuu/

2018 was a hell of a year for underground music in Sydney (despite all the political madness of course) so we're excited for an even crazier 2019! To bring us into a fresh year, one of our absolute favourite techno DJs, @jasmine-peters. Jasmine is one of the ultimate collaborators of this town, with affiliations to tons of our "m8 crews"; Immersion, Dunj, Weird, just to name a few. With this comes a vinyl collecting obsession that allows Jasmine to showcase some of the best deep techno from all the corners of the earth. In this mix, expect deepness, darkness, and electro vibes as Jas sends hypnotic rhythms out into the airwaves via cold hard wax.
Wowsa 2018 went quick.. December is upon us and what a year of tunage it’s been! Closing things out right for the year, there’s only one man for the job, our favourite blue bearded bandit, @sonnywhu. Sonny’s eclectic taste has lead him to represent a bloody ton of different genres and sounds through his years DJing, but through all this there is one tempo that seems to hold itself higher than all else. We are thrilled to have Sonny on the buttons for a total 170 tear up, traversing everything through ambient, footwork, half-time and jungle, just the way we like it. Lock in for one hour of freshness as Sonny Whu closes up the 2018 BTRMIX series with style. From the beach, to a dank warehouse, this timeless mix will go down anywhere. Cheerio and see you next year!
This months BTRMIX comes a biiiig bassy one. Coming in hot from a massive set at Dragon Dreaming last weekend, Braidwood's very own bassman: @moonstompa. Moonstompa has been rocking Canberra and it's surrounds for the last little while, the young lad bringing his unique brand of dark minimal vibes to the Capital, Sydney and beyond. Playing on support for some of the UKs best undergound bass acts (Amit, Compa, Versa, Seba, Djinn etc. etc.) Moonstompa's experience on the decks is confident, direct, and infectiously skank inducing. This mix brings us through everything Big Ting stands for, big dark rhythmic vibes, and tons of genre-hopping. Get ready for an hour run through Dubstep, Half-time DnB, and some oh so dark Jungle. Strap yourself in for a skank, this one has it all. You can keep up to date with all of his gigs, NSW, ACT and beyond here: https://www.facebook.com/edmund.morris.39
We are very proud to present another of the old friends of Big Ting for Octobers BTRMIX, our friend, local favourite, @TGMN. For years TGMN has been passionately pushing the sounds he loves, through a multitude of different party series’ and record labels, helping to push the forefront of Sydney’s taste in techno, bass, and experimental music. In this mix you can expect huge industrial rhythms, funky electro inspired breaks, and the “biggest of room” atmospheres. Prepare to hear some records you may never get to hear again, it’s a goodun. You can follow all of TGMNs wheelings, dealings, and brilliant musings here: https://www.facebook.com/tgmnn/
After an absolute stunner set supporting K-Lone and Madam X last month (not to mention another killer close at Nectar last weekend) what better person to bring in the Spring section of this years mix series than @na-ta-li-a. This month, Natalia brings us deep into the realm of d'floor ready, bass (heavy) hitters. Exploring all the sick sub-heavy percussive stuff we love with a cheeky special focus on some exceptional local Sydney artists who are producing legitimately world class tunes right now. If you liked this mix as much as we do, you can get even more every Thursday night on FBi Radio where Natalia showcases Australia’s best local talent. For the rest of this month too, she'll be covering for Andy Garvey’s “Pure Space” so get onto that on Monday nights. August's BTRMIX comes from perhaps the oldest friend of Big Ting. A long time collaborator, joining us from some of the very first Rivet parties, Innerspace co-founder, @bloomaustralia. Living his life as one of Sydney's true 'swiss army knife' DJs (just how we like it) Bloom's DJ and production style traverses a miriad of different vibes and genres. He is proclaimed an enthusiast of all things industrial and psychadelic. With this, Bloom has given us a mix rife with the most heavy-hitting trance inducing techno, seemlessly blended into the minimal 170 sounds we too adore. Lock in for over an hour of deep, dank, dark shiz which we know you'll enjoy just as much as we have. You can keep up with the Innerspace head-honcho up in hurr: https://www.facebook.com/bloomaustralia/
Two years after its inception comes the final Big Ting founding member to impart his mark on the BTRMIX series, @monakooo. A Sydney local and lover of all music deep dark and wonderful, Monako endeavours to push and create particular sounds without the traditional requirement of sticking to constraints of tempo or genre. At that, you can expect anything that pushes the boundaries of breakbeat based, sine wave heavy music, with a smattering of ambience and pad forward textures to fill out. The ultimate aim: to allow the listener to be taken on a journey and feel the intention the music was created with, whether that be lounge-back tunes, or dancefloor ready bangers. From techno, to dubstep, to jungle, and more, there's hopefully something here for everyone, and if Monako has done it right, it may even introduce you to some new sounds you never knew you liked. You can keep up with all of Monako's gigs, musings, and wheelings 'n' dealings here: https://www.facebook.com/MonakoAU/
This month's BTRMIX comes from one of Big Ting's oldest friends (we actually met him at Defqon but that's neither here nor there..) @rridds. Forward thinker, envelope pusher, constantly edging Dunj to new directions, Ridds is a DJ with an immensely vast range and an uncanny motivation to align himself with any and all innovation in electronic music. It's our absolute pleasure to host this massive burner of a mix which traverses a huge BPM range of cruisy tribal rhythms, chugging prog, and straight up slamming techno. Strap in for one of the most daring, far spanning journeys we've ever experienced in the BTRMIX realm.
The discovery of @Lydios has been one of our favourites of all. Fresh faces in Australia, this Leeds/London based duo are waving the flag high for the next generation of multi-genre breakbeat enthusiasts. Dom and Archie, temporarily separated by the great distance between Australia and the UK, have been working hard at cultivating their own unique sound, blending the best of grime, hardcore, jungle, dubstep and practically every other vibe we’re obsessed with right now. This mix showcases all of this, different sounds you’ve never heard, and a bunch of their own work. Lydios are seriously a label to watch, we know you’ll enjoy this mix just as much as we have. You can follow the boys, their releases, and their party series (Unknown Flavours) here: https://www.facebook.com/LydiosLDS/
It's been a little while between sips, but the BTRMIX series is finally back for 2018 with one of Sydney's favourites, @spliitch! A driving force of Sydney's new breed of junglist, Splitch is one of the most hard working, underated producers in the city. He plays a crucial role in one of our favourite genre cross-overs happening at the moment; squeezing the boundaries between techno and jungle ever closer. This mix is chock full of his own productions, huge atmospheric percussive sounds within the 130bpm spectrum, pushed all the way up to old school jungle and liquid drum & bass, everything we love! So kick back and enjoy some delightful amens (and other breaks). You can keep up to date with Splitch's gigs and releases here: https://www.facebook.com/splitch/
The final BTRMIX of 2017 is here and it's a big one. Power couple of Sydney (UK) bass music, Ruins. With years of collective promoting and punter experience between them, Ruins have solidified themselves as one the most forward thinking duos in Sydney bass music today. With huge affiliations, Construct to FBi Radio, Ruins constantly push the blurred line between techno and bass music, this mix is no exception. Broken Beats, 4x4, Amens, this mix has it all. You can catch Ruins thump out some of these tunes live on NYE at Oxford Art Factory in support of Jon Hopkins; Big Ting & Something Else hosting the gallery. October's BTRMIX is here, and we're so thrilled to have our very own @n-va_btr make his mark on our humble series. A founding member of Big Ting Recordings, N-Va has been solidifying himself as one of Sydney's most eclectic selectors for the past few years. He traverses all genres seemlessly, but the one true flavour he can never drag himself away from is the sounds of the amens. This mix is a journey through all the fiery dark 170 sounds we love at BTR. Gear up for some shattering bass forward minimal drum & bass, ramping up to some of the most brutal chopped amens you will ever here. Junglists unite, this mix is for you.
