De Lijn moet 35,5 miljoen euro besparen. Het is lang niet de eerste besparing, en heel wat gemeenten protesteren tegen de plannen van minister van Mobiliteit Annick De Ridder (N-VA). Kunnen de vervoerregio's die plannen nog stoppen, of zullen er hoe dan ook passagiers in de kou blijven staan? “Je treft met deze plannen vooral mensen niet anders kunnen dan de bus nemen”, duidt ook Maxime Callaert (N-VA), schepen van Mobiliteit in Sint-Niklaas. “Een buslijn die bij ons in gevaar is, heeft ook zeker een belangrijke sociale functie.” Zo lijkt de reiziger inderdaad de dupe. De vervoersregio's verdedigen dat standpunt bijna unaniem. Pittig detail: vele N-VA-burgemeesters en -schepenen zijn ook gekant tegen het voorstel van partijgenote De Ridder. Zij zet echter door om de begroting te doen kloppen, zo bleek woensdag in het Vlaams Parlement. “Je zou kunnen denken dat de modal shift, het plan om voor de helft van de verplaatsingen duurzame vervoersmiddelen te gebruiken, zo naar de achtergrond te verdwijnt”, kadert collega Yumi Demeyere. “Maar dat ontkent het kabinet van De Ridder met klem, zij focussen op investeringen in de toekomst.” Samen met collega Aria Nik Mehr bespreekt ze de plannen. Na bijna twee jaar stilstand heeft het Brusselse gewest ein-de-lijk een nieuwe regering. Dinsdagmiddag startte, op initiatief van MR-voorzitter Georges-Louis Bouchez, een conclaaf. Donderdagavond was er witte rook: een deal tussen zeven partijen (zonder de N-VA), die onder meer mikt op een begrotingsevenwicht in 2029. ­ 613 dagen lang lukte het niet, nu wel. Het lijkt een donderslag bij heldere hemel, al zagen enkele visionairen in de Wetstraat al iets aankomen “want er moeten nu eenmaal wat excellenties gaan skiën in de Krokusvakantie”... Je kunt er cynisch over doen, maar feit is: er is een akkoord over een nieuwe Brusselse regering, mét een meerderheid in elke taalgroep. Moeten we juichen of is het daarvoor al lang te laat? Bij de zeven partijen (MR, PS, Les Engagés, Groen, Vooruit, Anders en CD&V) overheerst opluchting, en zelfs een zekere trots. ­ "Dit is een ambitieus akkoord, ondanks de moeilijke politieke context", zo zei MR-voorzitter Georges-Louis Bouchez donderdagavond op de trappen van de Universitaire Stichting, waar hij finaal erin slaagde om een Brusselse regering op te tuigen. Hij is ontegensprekelijk één van de “winnaars” van deze formatie. ­ Wetstraatjournalist Jeroen Struys merkt op dat deze coalitie eigenlijk al in de zomer van 2024 (!) in de steigers stond, of liever: had kunnen staan. Toen was het CD&V dat het zaakje niet zag zitten. Vandaag blijft CD&V achter zónder ministerpost, al kan de partij wel uitpakken met een paar trofeeën - net als de zes anderen. De vraag is natuurlijk wat de regering écht gedaan krijgt de komende drie jaar. Er ligt meer werk op de plank dan ooit, en er is minder geld dan ooit. Toch gaat de regering – die voorlopig nog de gerecycleerde bijnaam Vivaldi torst – resoluut voor een begroting in evenwicht in 2029. Das Historisch-Technische Museum ist kein Urlaubs-Wohlfühlort, aber es ist politisch und historisch wichtig. In der gegenwärtigen Zeit ohnehin! Das Historisch-Technische Museum Peenemünde Das in Peenemünde im Norden der Ostseeinsel Usedom verortete Historisch-Technische-Museum erinnert an und dokumentiert die einst hier angesiedelte Heeresversuchsanstalten während der Nazizeit. Es existierte von 1936 bis 1945. Technischer Leiter war der spätere NASA-„Star“ Wernher von Braun. Hier wurden mit der V1, der erste Marschflugkörper der Welt entwickelt und zur Serienreife geführt. Auch die erste funktionsfähige Großrakete wurde hier entwickelt. Die Rakete mit ursprünglichem Namen „Aggregat 4“ wurde in der Nazipropaganda zur sogenannten „Vergeltungswaffe V2“. Den Kuratoren geht es in erster Linie um die historisch-politischen Zusammenhänge der einstigen „Heeresversuchsanstalt“. Auch die Auslagerung der Waffenproduktion in einen Stollen in der Nähe von Nordhausen am Harz nach britischen Bombenangriffen im Jahr 1943 ist ein wichtiges Thema. Die menschlichen Bedingungen in den Stollen und dem dazugehörigen KZ sind Thema der Dauerausstellung. Prädikat: Historisch und Politisch Besonders wertvoll. Kommt mit in die Hörwelt des Reiseradio-Podcasts. Zusätzlich empfehle ich den Podcast über die Nebensaison auf Usedom. Das H-T-M in Peenemünde wurde 1991 eröffnet. Nach 1945 und bis zur Wende war das Gelände ein Militärstandort der NVA und für die Öffentlichkeit nicht zugänglich. Das Museum ist ganzjährig geöffnet. Vielleicht ist dieser Talk – auch zur aktuellen politischen Situation in Deutschland – hilfreich. Denn dieser Teil der deutschen Geschichte darf sich – auch in neuem Gewand – nicht wiederholen!Auch deshalb empfehle ich das Technisch–Historische Museum von Peenemünde. Historische Fakten, menschliches Schicksal & politische Konsequenz Wer die Ausstellung inhaliert hat, geht etwas stiller vom Gelände. Fazit: Technische Faszination darf nicht über historische Zusammenhänge hinwegtäuschen. Wenn Ihr nach Usedom kommt, besucht bitte dieses Museum. Es lohnt sich. Und noch wichtiger: Zieht danach Euer politisches Fazit und handelt entsprechend! THE 1975 COLLAPSE AND THE WAR'S STRATEGIC FAILURE Colleague Geoffrey Wawro. Following the 1973 peace deal and US withdrawal, Congressional aid to South Vietnam plummeted, leaving the ARVN deprived of essential logistics and air support. When the NVA launched their final offensive in 1975, the US did not intervene, leading to a chaotic collapse of the South Vietnamese military and the fall of Saigon. The war concluded as a strategic failure where the US fought a political war based on the domino theory without understanding local realities, resulting in immense loss of life for little geopolitical gain. THE CAMBODIAN INCURSION AND DOMESTIC UNREST Colleague Geoffrey Wawro. In 1970, Nixonauthorized an incursion into Cambodia to destroy NVA sanctuaries and supply lines, but the operation failed strategically as the enemy simply retreated deeper into the country and returned later. While the invasion widened the war and ignited massive domestic unrest, including the fatal shootings at Kent State, it also consolidated Nixon's political base, the "Silent Majority." This polarization was evidenced by the "Hard Hat" riots, where workers attacked anti-war protesters, demonstrating that a significant portion of the country still supported the administration's efforts. THE BATTLE OF IA DRANG AND NVA ADAPTATION Colleague Geoffrey Wawro. In 1965, the US introduced combat troops and air mobility tactics, showcased at the Battle of Ia Drang, where General Westmoreland used infantry as "tethered goats" to draw the enemy out for destruction by artillery. However, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) quickly adapted by "hugging" American lines to neutralize superior US firepower, proving they could inflict significant damage and control the terms of engagement. Despite high casualties, the NVA utilized human wave attacks and close-quarters combat, turning what the US hoped would be decisive victories into bloody massacres. NUMBER 10

En Ahmed Laaouej van de PS doet niets anders dan praten over zijn eergevoel. Maar het gaat ook over een machtsstrijd tussen de MR en de PS, waarbij de PS het Brussels Gewest gebruikt als een soort van oppositie tegen de federale N-VA-regering.” ­ Wanneer komt er volgens Jeroen een Brusselse regering? The Battle of Dak To took place in Kon Tum Province, near the border with Laos, as U.S. Army units—mainly from the 173rd Airborne Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, and 1st Cavalry Division—clashed with well-entrenched North Vietnamese Army (NVA) forces. For weeks, paratroopers and infantrymen fought for control of jungle-covered ridges like Hill 875, where heavy bombardment turned the forest to ash and cost hundreds of American lives. By the time the battle ended, over 280 Americans were killed and more than 900 wounded, while NVA losses numbered in the thousands. It was a pyrrhic victory that revealed both the extraordinary valor of U.S. troops and the brutal futility of the wider war. In this livestream, veterans of Dak To will share their memories of combat, loss, and survival—and reflect on what the battle means today, nearly half a century later. We'll explore the human dimension behind the headlines: the fear, the brotherhood, and the haunting aftermath carried home. Im Kalten Krieg standen sich zwei deutsche Armeen gegenüber und doch kam es 1984/85 in Afrika zu einem historischen Moment der Zusammenarbeit: Bundeswehr und Nationale Volksarmee (NVA) beteiligten sich gleichzeitig an einem internationalen Hilfseinsatz gegen den Hunger in Äthiopien. Eine neue Sonderausstellung im MHMBw Berlin-Gatow erinnert daran. Politik, Propaganda und Pragmatismus Mitte der 1980er-Jahre befand sich Äthiopien in einer tiefen Krise: Neben einer schweren Dürre trugen Bürgerkrieg, Misswirtschaft und die politischen Verhältnisse zur Hungerkatastrophe bei. Das äthiopische Regime unter Mengistu Haile Mariam ließ gezielt die Bevölkerung in bestimmten Regionen hungern. Dennoch akzeptierte es – aus machtpolitischem Kalkül – humanitäre Hilfsangebote aus Ost und West. So leisteten erstmals Bundeswehr und NVA gleichzeitig in einem Land humanitäre Hilfe. Auf Seiten der DDR war auch die staatliche Fluggesellschaft „Interflug“ beteiligt. Ihren jeweiligen Einsätzen lag offiziell weder eine gemeinsame Koordination noch Planung zugrunde. Beide Seiten agierten formal unabhängig voneinander unter dem Mandat der Vereinten Nationen (UN). Auf denselben Flugfeldern, mit ähnlichen Maschinen und angesichts der Not entstand eine stille Form der Zusammenarbeit – geprägt von gegenseitigem Respekt und pragmatischem Handeln zweier ideologischer Gegner. Militärlogistik gegen den Hunger Die topografischen Bedingungen in Äthiopien erforderten robuste Lufttransportmittel. Nur mit militärischen Flugzeugen und Hubschraubern war es möglich, Hilfsgüter in abgelegene Regionen zu bringen. Bundeswehr und NVA setzten auf bewährte Transportflugzeuge und trainierte Crews. Zusätzlich entwickelte die Bundeswehr ein neues Verfahren zum Abwerfen von Hilfsgütern aus niedrigster Höhe. Trotz aller politischen Spannungen zwischen Ost und West ermöglichte diese Zusammenarbeit eine effektive Hilfeleistung. Die Bundeswehr zog aus dem humanitären Einsatz Erfahrungen, die auch Ausbildung und Ausrüstung künftiger deutscher Hilfsmissionen prägten. Erfahrungen aus Äthiopien flossen in Konzepte der militärischen Katastrophenhilfe ein. Zugleich stellte sich die Frage nach der Rolle von NGOs, westlicher Außenpolitik und der Instrumentalisierung von Hilfe. In einem Bürgerkriegsland mit sozialistischer Diktatur war Neutralität kaum möglich. Auch die UN gerieten in ein Spannungsfeld aus Moral, Macht und Machbarkeit. Live Aid und öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit Die internationale Aufmerksamkeit für das Leid in Äthiopien erreichte mit dem Benefizkonzert „Live Aid“ im Sommer 1985 ihren Höhepunkt. Bob Geldofs Initiative sammelte ca. 100 Millionen US-Dollar an Spenden, doch bis heute ist umstritten, wie wirksam ihre Hilfe war und wer letztlich davon profitierte. Die bereits laufenden Einsätze von Bundeswehr und NVA gerieten dabei in den Hintergrund. In Äthiopien selbst fand der militärische Hilfseinsatz kaum Eingang in die kollektive Erinnerung. Auch in Deutschland ist der Hilfseinsatz heute weitestgehend vergessen. Gerade deshalb ist die Berliner Ausstellung des MHMBw Gatow ein wichtiges Erinnerungszeichen. Ein vergessenes Kapitel militärischer Hilfe Die Sonderausstellung des MHMBw auf dem Flugplatz Berlin-Gatow trägt den Titel „Äthiopien ´84/85. Hunger – Hilfe – Kalter Krieg“. Auf rund 3.000 Quadratmetern im Außenbereich erwartet die Besucherinnen und Besucher eine eindrucksvolle Inszenierung mit historischen Transportflugzeugen wie der Transall C-160 und der Antonow An-26. Das begehbare Modell des Bundeswehr-Camps in Dire Dawa, ein eigens entwickeltes Videospiel zur Logistik des Abwurfs von Hilfsgütern und eine Tribüne mit „Live Aid“-Atmosphäre vermitteln eindrucksvoll das Spannungsfeld von Not, Engagement und Weltpolitik.

De top in Alaska en de tarievenoorlog van Donald Trump hebben hem meer dan ooit overtuigd dat Europa op niets of niemand meer kan rekenen. "Europa is teruggeworpen op zichzelf. We staan alleen.” Trump gebruikt de militaire en geopolitieke zwakte van de EU en haar lidstaten om hen economisch te onderwerpen en achter hun rug met Vladimir Poetin te dealen ten koste van Oekraïne. Daarbij acht hij de belangen van zijn 'tech bros' van grotere betekenis dan die van de NAVO- en EU-lidstaten die al decennia trouwe bondgenoten zijn. Weber zegt het ronduit: "Wij zijn te lang zwak geweest en hadden onze veiligheid uitbesteed aan de Amerikanen. Daar betalen we nu een hoge prijs voor." Hij wijst erop dat JD Vance en Elon Musk openlijk koketteren met anti-Europese partijen als de AfD. "Die juichen 'America First!'. Ze heulen met Poetin. Marine le Pen is door hem gefinancierd!" Tegenover deze krachten staat de EVP pal, benadrukt hij. Niet alleen het CDA tegenover de PVV en CDU-CSU tegenover de AfD, maar ook Peter Magyars Tisza versus Viktor Orbán, Donald Tusk tegenover PiS en de Tsjechische partij tegen Poetin-populist Andrej Babiš. Ursula von der Leyen moet daarom ‘Europa, ontwaak!’ roepen in de Staat van de Europese Unie, haar grote toespraak vandaag in Straatsburg. De lidstaten moeten veel nauwer samenwerken. Het Rapport-Draghi? "Honderd procent! Een Interne markt voor energie, voor digitale industrie, voor diensten, kapitaalmarkten. Mario Draghi voltooit wat Jacques Delors begon." Ook een wereld-vrijhandelsorganisatie van de EU met gelijkgezinde landen en regio's tegenover Amerika en China zet hij op de agenda. Dertien van de 27 EU-premiers zijn van de EVP en de meerderheid van de Commissie. Dit machtige blok wil hij nog verder versterken door radicaalrechts te versplinteren. In de conservatieve ECR-fractie wil hij Giorgia Meloni's Fratelli en de Vlaamse N-VA van Bart de Wever laten breken met hun extreme partners zoals die uit Spanje en Polen. Verdeel en heers. Europa moet zijn eigen boontjes doppen, meent Weber. De Frans-Duitse as functioneert weer dankzij Emmanuel Macron en Friedrich Merz. De Britten komen weer langszij. En Nederland kan, ja móet volop mee doen. De marginalisatie in de Schoof-fase vond Weber ergerlijk, want "Nederland is een middelgrote lidstaat met krachtige hightech, logistiek, de haven in Rotterdam, een sterke landbouw. Zo'n land moet mee doen en voorop lopen." Vincent van Peteghem (vanaf minuut 28) De Belgische vicepremier Vincent van Peteghem is de minister die over de begroting gaat en een van de toonaangevende gezichten van de Europese christendemocratie. Keken we in ons land vaak meewarig naar de langdurige crises en formaties bij de Zuiderburen, intussen vragen we ons af hoe zij naar onze perikelen kijken. Met een grijnslach ontkent Van Peteghem enig leedvermaak over Den Haag te hebben gehad. Veeleer vond hij de politieke absentie van Nederland in Europa verontrustend. "Je merkte toch dat deze ministers daar met een andere agenda zaten." De weigering met het Vlaams Belang in zee te gaan is voor zijn CD&V - zusterpartij van het CDA - principieel. De nieuwe, brede midden coalitie in Brussel is instructief voor de Haagse politiek. Men slaagde er bijvoorbeeld in rond 'Gaza' een breed gedragen lijn te vinden. "Wij verkeren in de mentale luxe dat wij ons niets hoeven aan te trekken van de agenda van het Vlaams Belang. Dat maakt hen meteen irrelevant." Van Peteghem is in deze regering een van de meest ambitieuze beleidshervormers. Vol vuur zet hij uiteen hoe een hervorming van arbeidsmarkt en sociale zekerheid ineengrijpt met een vergaand pensioenakkoord en fiscale hervorming. Lasten weg van arbeid naar consumptie en vervuiling. Met zijn 'staatsbons' onthutste hij de banken en de financiële markten. Met het enorme succes ervan bij miljoenen spaarders heeft hij naam gemaakt. Bijna achteloos vertelt hij hoe de Belgen het stikstofprobleem hebben. Ook hier kan Nederland van leren. Van Peteghems advies aan zijn Europese partijgenoot Henri Bontenbal is scherp: 'Hou vast aan je koers die vóór alles de lange termijn voorop zet.' En Manfred Webers strategie om radicaalrechts te splijten en conservatieven naar de EVP te lokken? Dat lijkt hem prima. Maar de N-VA hoort niet in de EVP, waarschuwt hij toch even. On today's episode, we're honored to hear from Lou Eisenbrandt, who in the late 1960s  was a young nurse who answered the call to serve in Vietnam. What she witnessed, what she endured, and what she carried home with her became the foundation for a lifetime of reflection and advocacy. Her experience didn't end when the war did. In the years since, she's written two books and spoken to a variety of audiences- helping shine a long-overdue spotlight on the women who served in Vietnam. And when Parkinson's disease entered her story, she met it with the same strength and openness that's defined her life. Today we will talk about her journey through war, healing, motherhood, and purpose—and what it means to carry a story for so many others. Growing up in a small Illinois town, Lou joined the Army to "see the world." After graduating as a Registered Nurse in June 1968, she attended officers' basic training, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, then headed to Ft. Dix New Jersey, her first duty assignment. In September 1969, she received orders for Vietnam, arriving there on November 1. During her year at the 91 st Evac Hospital in Chu Lai, she cared for GIs, South Vietnamese soldiers and civilians, even Viet Cong and NVA soldiers. From malaria and hepatitis to double amputees, massive head traumas and deadly gunshot wounds, she saw it all. Her book, Vietnam Nurse, Mending and Remembering, published in June 2015, chronicles her experiences. She takes you through the sights and sounds of combat nursing, waterskiing on the South China Sea, a weekend jeep trip with flak jackets and helmets, and surviving early-morning rocket attacks. Since 1970, she has made 4 return trips to Vietnam. In September 2014, she joined 11 other vets, all male, 12 College of the Ozarks students and several faculty members, to visit sites where each of the vets had been stationed during the war. The trip was sponsored by the college and became one of the motivating factors for completing her book. For the past 40 years, Lou has been sharing her experiences with students, veterans, and community groups. In addition, she has served on the boards of directors for numerous not-for-profit organizations and is currently a board member of the Veterans' Voices Writing Project. She is a past member of the People with Parkinson's Advisory Council of the Parkinson's Foundation. She has been employed as a travel agent, children's cooking instructor, and stained-glass artisan. Her other interests are: travel, photography, golf, gardening, and grandchildren. Lou is passionately involved in finding a cure for Parkinson's Disease, which she has lived with for 22 years as a result of exposure to Agent Orange. In her latest book, published in May 2022 and titled Unsteady as She Goes: Battling Parkinson's After Vietnam, she shares her thoughts on living her best life with a chronic, progressive disease. She and her husband Jim have been married for 53 years and live in Leawood Kansas. They have two children and two grandchildren. If it's loose - it is no use! Doug Greenlaw sees his life as a series of "lightning strikes." He was literally struck by lightning when he was 13 years old, thankfully making an immediate recovery. He later left Indiana University to join the Army, become an officer, and serve in in the Vietnam War - first as a platoon commander and then as a company commander. He arrived in Vietnam in 1967.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Greenlaw takes us through his training, including a terrifying story from jungle training, and through his most harrowing moments in Vietnam. Greenlaw details the events of Thanksgiving Day 1967, when his platoon was dropped off in the wrong spot and quickly found itself facing a North Vietnamese battalion of 400-500 fighters. He explains the actions he took to keep his men alive until air and ground support could arrive - and he describes hand-to-hand fighting with an enemy officer in a North Vietnamese tunnel.Greenlaw also tells us his responsibilities and priorities as a platoon and company commander and how he and his men painstakingly looked out for enemy booby traps and explosives. He also reveals the extensive injuries he suffered after a soldier in his company tripped one of those wires.We'll also hear how Greenlaw's military service impacted his impressive rise as a sales and marketing executive, all the way to the top of MTV, Nickelodeon, and VH-1.Finally, we'll learn about Greenlaw's leadership with the Military Order of the Purple Heart, from leading his local chapter to serving as national commander for two years.

The Fall of Saigon marked the official end of the Vietnam War. On April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese forces captured Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, bringing about the unconditional surrender of the South Vietnamese government and reunifying Vietnam under communist rule. In early 1975, North Vietnam launched the Spring Offensive, a massive military campaign aimed at defeating South Vietnam. U.S. forces had largely withdrawn after the 1973 Paris Peace Accords, which were supposed to ensure peace and political resolution. However, fighting resumed almost immediately, and by March 1975, North Vietnamese forces began sweeping through the Central Highlands with little resistance. City after city fell—Ban Me Thuot, then Hue, then Da Nang. The South Vietnamese military, riddled with corruption, low morale, and logistical failures, crumbled quickly. By mid-April, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) had surrounded Saigon. Panic gripped the city. Over two million residents—government officials, soldiers, and civilians—feared brutal retribution from communist forces. The U.S., which had drastically reduced its presence in Vietnam, prepared to evacuate remaining American personnel and as many South Vietnamese allies as possible. The evacuation was codenamed Operation Frequent Wind. It began in earnest on April 29, as NVA shelling closed Tan Son Nhut Airport. Helicopters became the only viable means of escape. U.S. Marine and Air America helicopters shuttled people from the U.S. Embassy and other buildings in Saigon to ships offshore in the South China Sea. Scenes of desperate Vietnamese civilians scaling embassy walls, clinging to departing helicopters, and crowding onto rooftops became iconic images of the war's chaotic end. During the final days, U.S. Ambassador Graham Martin remained in denial, delaying evacuation and worsening the chaos. Only about 7,000 Vietnamese were airlifted out in time. Tens of thousands more were left behind. On the morning of April 30, the last U.S. Marines guarding the embassy were airlifted out under fire. At around 11:30 AM, North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates of the Presidential Palace. President Duong Van Minh, who had been appointed only days earlier in a last-ditch effort to negotiate a peaceful handover, surrendered unconditionally. The war was over. Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City, and the South Vietnamese government ceased to exist. Tens of thousands of former South Vietnamese officials, military officers, and intellectuals were sent to reeducation camps. A mass exodus of refugees began—many fled by boat, leading to the “boat people” crisis in the late 1970s and 1980s. The Fall of Saigon was not just a military collapse but a symbol of the United States' failure to achieve its objectives in Vietnam despite years of fighting, enormous casualties, and massive financial investment. It left a deep scar on American foreign policy and military planning and redefined how the U.S. approached future conflicts. We're grateful to UPMC for Life  for sponsoring this event!

Anthony "Tony" Wood grew up in a Marine Corps family and enlisted to begin his own service in 1964. Before long he was commissioned as a USMC officer. His first deployment to Vietnam came shortly after the Tet Offensive. Initially trained as an infantry platoon commander, he soon found himself leading an armored platoon.Wood was deployed to Vietnam again in 1974, long after the signing of the Paris Peace Accords and American forces had gone home. Initially working to solve cases of Americans missing in action, Wood was tasked with planning the evacuation of Americans from Saigon after the North Vietnamese violated the peace agreement and invaded South Vietnam.April 30, 1975, marks 50 years since the fall of Saigon.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles," Col. Wood takes us step by step into how he and others planned the evacuation with virtually no security and very few assets of any kind. He also explains how he had to keep the planning a secret from America's own ambassador to South Vietnam. He also shares the ingenious ways that they camouflaged the evacuation, using cars painted to look like the local police, and bus drivers communicating through very basic but effective means. And Wood explains how the evacuation was impacted by South Vietnamese civilians pouring into the city with the North Vietnamese forces not far behind.We'll also learn details about Wood's first deployment in 1968-1969, how he worked alongside the South Korean Marines' Blue Dragon Brigade, and how the Tet Offensive was horribly misinterpreted by the U.S. media and politicians. 

I've been following, Assita Kanko, Member of European Parliament on social media for quite some time, so it was a true thrill to welcome her into the studio as our latest guest on The One Way Ticket Show.  Ms. Kanko was born on July 14, 1980, in Godyr, Burkina Faso. She grew up in a society where women's rights were severely restricted and was subjected to female genital mutilation as a child. At a young age, she began writing about human rights and women's rights. In 2001, she moved to Belgium, where she eventually became a naturalized citizen. She studied journalism and political science and became a well-known voice in public debate, working as an author, opinion maker, and human rights activist. Since 2019, Ms. Kanko has been a Member of the European Parliament for the N-VA party, affiliated with the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group. Within the Parliament, she serves on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), where she focuses on issues such as migration, security, women's rights, and the fight against human trafficking. She is a vocal advocate for a controlled migration policy and the protection of Europe's external borders. Ms. Kanko also champions women's empowerment, equal opportunities, and the defense of European values. In our conversation, Ms. Kanko shares her journey from being a journalism student and activist in her native Burkina Faso, to being a powerful voice in Brussels. Gregory "Matt" Dillon was required to enroll in ROTC at the University of Alabama. Upon graduation, he was required to give two years in the U.S. Army. He ended up serving 24 years, including three tours in Vietnam. He served as operations officer for then-Lt. Col. Hal Moore with the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Air Cavalry Division at the vicious battle of Landing Zone X-Ray in November 1965 In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Col. Dillon explains the events that led up to the Battle of Ia Drang, how the fighting began, the saga of the lost platoon, the enemy's relentless assault on the second day of the battle, and how American air power proved to be a descisive factor in winning the battle.Dillon notes the heroism of the men who fought there and the tremendous leadership of Hal Moore. He also describes the actions in July 1969 that resulted in him receiving the Silver Star.
