De top in Alaska en de tarievenoorlog van Donald Trump hebben hem meer dan ooit overtuigd dat Europa op niets of niemand meer kan rekenen. "Europa is teruggeworpen op zichzelf. We staan alleen.” Trump gebruikt de militaire en geopolitieke zwakte van de EU en haar lidstaten om hen economisch te onderwerpen en achter hun rug met Vladimir Poetin te dealen ten koste van Oekraïne. Daarbij acht hij de belangen van zijn 'tech bros' van grotere betekenis dan die van de NAVO- en EU-lidstaten die al decennia trouwe bondgenoten zijn. Weber zegt het ronduit: "Wij zijn te lang zwak geweest en hadden onze veiligheid uitbesteed aan de Amerikanen. Daar betalen we nu een hoge prijs voor." Hij wijst erop dat JD Vance en Elon Musk openlijk koketteren met anti-Europese partijen als de AfD. "Die juichen 'America First!'. Ze heulen met Poetin. Marine le Pen is door hem gefinancierd!" Tegenover deze krachten staat de EVP pal, benadrukt hij. Niet alleen het CDA tegenover de PVV en CDU-CSU tegenover de AfD, maar ook Peter Magyars Tisza versus Viktor Orbán, Donald Tusk tegenover PiS en de Tsjechische partij tegen Poetin-populist Andrej Babiš. Ursula von der Leyen moet daarom ‘Europa, ontwaak!’ roepen in de Staat van de Europese Unie, haar grote toespraak vandaag in Straatsburg. De lidstaten moeten veel nauwer samenwerken. Het Rapport-Draghi? "Honderd procent! Een Interne markt voor energie, voor digitale industrie, voor diensten, kapitaalmarkten. Mario Draghi voltooit wat Jacques Delors begon." Ook een wereld-vrijhandelsorganisatie van de EU met gelijkgezinde landen en regio's tegenover Amerika en China zet hij op de agenda. Dertien van de 27 EU-premiers zijn van de EVP en de meerderheid van de Commissie. Dit machtige blok wil hij nog verder versterken door radicaalrechts te versplinteren. In de conservatieve ECR-fractie wil hij Giorgia Meloni's Fratelli en de Vlaamse N-VA van Bart de Wever laten breken met hun extreme partners zoals die uit Spanje en Polen. Verdeel en heers. Europa moet zijn eigen boontjes doppen, meent Weber. De Frans-Duitse as functioneert weer dankzij Emmanuel Macron en Friedrich Merz. De Britten komen weer langszij. En Nederland kan, ja móet volop mee doen. De marginalisatie in de Schoof-fase vond Weber ergerlijk, want "Nederland is een middelgrote lidstaat met krachtige hightech, logistiek, de haven in Rotterdam, een sterke landbouw. Zo'n land moet mee doen en voorop lopen." Vincent van Peteghem (vanaf minuut 28) De Belgische vicepremier Vincent van Peteghem is de minister die over de begroting gaat en een van de toonaangevende gezichten van de Europese christendemocratie. Keken we in ons land vaak meewarig naar de langdurige crises en formaties bij de Zuiderburen, intussen vragen we ons af hoe zij naar onze perikelen kijken. Met een grijnslach ontkent Van Peteghem enig leedvermaak over Den Haag te hebben gehad. Veeleer vond hij de politieke absentie van Nederland in Europa verontrustend. "Je merkte toch dat deze ministers daar met een andere agenda zaten." De weigering met het Vlaams Belang in zee te gaan is voor zijn CD&V - zusterpartij van het CDA - principieel. De nieuwe, brede midden coalitie in Brussel is instructief voor de Haagse politiek. Men slaagde er bijvoorbeeld in rond 'Gaza' een breed gedragen lijn te vinden. "Wij verkeren in de mentale luxe dat wij ons niets hoeven aan te trekken van de agenda van het Vlaams Belang. Dat maakt hen meteen irrelevant." Van Peteghem is in deze regering een van de meest ambitieuze beleidshervormers. Vol vuur zet hij uiteen hoe een hervorming van arbeidsmarkt en sociale zekerheid ineengrijpt met een vergaand pensioenakkoord en fiscale hervorming. Lasten weg van arbeid naar consumptie en vervuiling. Met zijn 'staatsbons' onthutste hij de banken en de financiële markten. Met het enorme succes ervan bij miljoenen spaarders heeft hij naam gemaakt. Bijna achteloos vertelt hij hoe de Belgen het stikstofprobleem hebben. Ook hier kan Nederland van leren. Van Peteghems advies aan zijn Europese partijgenoot Henri Bontenbal is scherp: 'Hou vast aan je koers die vóór alles de lange termijn voorop zet.' En Manfred Webers strategie om radicaalrechts te splijten en conservatieven naar de EVP te lokken? Dat lijkt hem prima. Maar de N-VA hoort niet in de EVP, waarschuwt hij toch even. À Knokke, là où tout est censé rester secret (surtout les scandales de week-end), une députée bourgeoise N-VA, Kathleen Depoorter, a réussi l'exploit : conduite en état d'ébriété... au volant d'une voiturette de golf ! Le tout sans assurance, avec refus du test d'alcoolémie, évidemment. C'est pas Hollywood, c'est juste Knokke qui se prend pour Fast and Furious version gazon ! Imaginez la scène : une dame élégante, un peu pompette, criant en flamand « Joepie, Ik ben rond als de staart van een schop » (traduction libre : « Je suis aussi rond qu'une queue de pelle »), fuyant une brigade de policiers en segways ou monocycles — la fine fleur de la police anti-voiturettes. Au pays du pipigate, on a désormais le “VoituretteGate”, un feuilleton estival où la justice met la gomme (ou presque). La députée, en vraie star, demande elle-même à lever son immunité parlementaire — histoire de faire genre “je prends mes responsabilités”, même si ça sent plus la petite amende et le stage de remise à niveau. Moralité : au royaume des folies politiques, rouler bourrée sans assurance, c'est plus grave que certains scandales internationaux… Et nous, on reste là, à attendre les détails croustillants : y'avait-il une plaque d'immatriculation parlementaire sur sa voiturette ? Est-ce que N-VA veut dire “Niet Voiturette Assureren” ? Et surtout, qui a osé penser qu'il fallait une assurance pour une voiturette de golf ? Doug Greenlaw sees his life as a series of "lightning strikes." He was literally struck by lightning when he was 13 years old, thankfully making an immediate recovery. He later left Indiana University to join the Army, become an officer, and serve in in the Vietnam War - first as a platoon commander and then as a company commander. He arrived in Vietnam in 1967.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Greenlaw takes us through his training, including a terrifying story from jungle training, and through his most harrowing moments in Vietnam. Greenlaw details the events of Thanksgiving Day 1967, when his platoon was dropped off in the wrong spot and quickly found itself facing a North Vietnamese battalion of 400-500 fighters. He explains the actions he took to keep his men alive until air and ground support could arrive - and he describes hand-to-hand fighting with an enemy officer in a North Vietnamese tunnel.Greenlaw also tells us his responsibilities and priorities as a platoon and company commander and how he and his men painstakingly looked out for enemy booby traps and explosives. He also reveals the extensive injuries he suffered after a soldier in his company tripped one of those wires.We'll also hear how Greenlaw's military service impacted his impressive rise as a sales and marketing executive, all the way to the top of MTV, Nickelodeon, and VH-1.Finally, we'll learn about Greenlaw's leadership with the Military Order of the Purple Heart, from leading his local chapter to serving as national commander for two years.

The Fall of Saigon marked the official end of the Vietnam War. On April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese forces captured Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, bringing about the unconditional surrender of the South Vietnamese government and reunifying Vietnam under communist rule. In early 1975, North Vietnam launched the Spring Offensive, a massive military campaign aimed at defeating South Vietnam. U.S. forces had largely withdrawn after the 1973 Paris Peace Accords, which were supposed to ensure peace and political resolution. However, fighting resumed almost immediately, and by March 1975, North Vietnamese forces began sweeping through the Central Highlands with little resistance. City after city fell—Ban Me Thuot, then Hue, then Da Nang. The South Vietnamese military, riddled with corruption, low morale, and logistical failures, crumbled quickly. By mid-April, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) had surrounded Saigon. Panic gripped the city. Over two million residents—government officials, soldiers, and civilians—feared brutal retribution from communist forces. The U.S., which had drastically reduced its presence in Vietnam, prepared to evacuate remaining American personnel and as many South Vietnamese allies as possible. The evacuation was codenamed Operation Frequent Wind. It began in earnest on April 29, as NVA shelling closed Tan Son Nhut Airport. Helicopters became the only viable means of escape. U.S. Marine and Air America helicopters shuttled people from the U.S. Embassy and other buildings in Saigon to ships offshore in the South China Sea. Scenes of desperate Vietnamese civilians scaling embassy walls, clinging to departing helicopters, and crowding onto rooftops became iconic images of the war's chaotic end. During the final days, U.S. Ambassador Graham Martin remained in denial, delaying evacuation and worsening the chaos. Only about 7,000 Vietnamese were airlifted out in time. Tens of thousands more were left behind. On the morning of April 30, the last U.S. Marines guarding the embassy were airlifted out under fire. At around 11:30 AM, North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates of the Presidential Palace. President Duong Van Minh, who had been appointed only days earlier in a last-ditch effort to negotiate a peaceful handover, surrendered unconditionally. The war was over. Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City, and the South Vietnamese government ceased to exist. Tens of thousands of former South Vietnamese officials, military officers, and intellectuals were sent to reeducation camps. A mass exodus of refugees began—many fled by boat, leading to the “boat people” crisis in the late 1970s and 1980s. The Fall of Saigon was not just a military collapse but a symbol of the United States' failure to achieve its objectives in Vietnam despite years of fighting, enormous casualties, and massive financial investment. Anthony "Tony" Wood grew up in a Marine Corps family and enlisted to begin his own service in 1964. Before long he was commissioned as a USMC officer. His first deployment to Vietnam came shortly after the Tet Offensive. Initially trained as an infantry platoon commander, he soon found himself leading an armored platoon.Wood was deployed to Vietnam again in 1974, long after the signing of the Paris Peace Accords and American forces had gone home. Initially working to solve cases of Americans missing in action, Wood was tasked with planning the evacuation of Americans from Saigon after the North Vietnamese violated the peace agreement and invaded South Vietnam.April 30, 1975, marks 50 years since the fall of Saigon.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles," Col. Wood takes us step by step into how he and others planned the evacuation with virtually no security and very few assets of any kind. He also explains how he had to keep the planning a secret from America's own ambassador to South Vietnam. He also shares the ingenious ways that they camouflaged the evacuation, using cars painted to look like the local police, and bus drivers communicating through very basic but effective means. And Wood explains how the evacuation was impacted by South Vietnamese civilians pouring into the city with the North Vietnamese forces not far behind.We'll also learn details about Wood's first deployment in 1968-1969, how he worked alongside the South Korean Marines' Blue Dragon Brigade, and how the Tet Offensive was horribly misinterpreted by the U.S. media and politicians.

Yanis Albane, le ministre des Finances N-VA, a dégainé une idée digne d'une recette de grand-mère : celui qui garde ses actions pendant dix ans sera exonéré. Le message est clair : sois patient, petit épargnant, et nous ne te mangerons pas tout cru. Mais cette carotte fiscale fait hurler Vooruit, les socialistes flamands. Pour eux, pas de pitié pour les riches. Ils avaient signé pour une taxe sur les plus-values sans exception, sans passe-droit. Pour eux, autoriser une exonération après dix ans, c'est dérouler le tapis rouge à celles et ceux qui ont les reins assez solides pour immobiliser de l'argent aussi longtemps. En coulisse la menace est réelle. Si Vooruit claque la porte, le gouvernement risque de tomber. Et si la N-VA plie, elle perd son électorat entrepreneur. Bref, pour sauver la coalition actuelle Arizona, il faudra taxer, mais avec des gants de soie. Et pendant que les politiques rejouent leur éternel ballet, des promesses trahies et des compromis boiteux, nous, petits épargnants, nous avançons sur un fil tendu au-dessus du vide en espérant que d'ici dix ans, personne n'ait changé encore une fois les règles du jeu. Car, ici en Belgique, l'épargne n'est plus une vertu, c'est un sport de combat. Et visiblement, la patience est devenue aussi une niche fiscale. Ecolo est en pleine réflexion sur sa position politique à Bruxelles, dix mois après sa défaite électorale. Initialement, le parti avait choisi l'opposition, marqué par un fort ressentiment envers ses anciens alliés socialistes. Cependant, cette posture devient difficile à tenir et est de plus en plus contestée en interne. Dès l'automne, certains membres ont appelé à revoir cette position. La coprésidente Marie Lecocq affiche désormais une ouverture à des négociations, mais sous strictes conditions : pas de coalition avec la N-VA, priorité aux mesures écologiques, et préférence pour un gouvernement avec le PS et le MR. Ecolo refuse de s'allier avec Les Engagés et Défi, isolant potentiellement le MR de ses partenaires fédéraux. Cette stratégie vise à éviter un gouvernement trop à droite. Le parti est aussi tiraillé entre ses ailes gauche et droite. L'annonce publique de cette nouvelle position vise à redonner un rôle central à Ecolo dans les discussions. Malgré tout, les nombreux vetos entre partis empêchent pour l'instant la formation d'un gouvernement. I've been following, Assita Kanko, Member of European Parliament on social media for quite some time, so it was a true thrill to welcome her into the studio as our latest guest on The One Way Ticket Show.  Ms. Kanko was born on July 14, 1980, in Godyr, Burkina Faso. She grew up in a society where women's rights were severely restricted and was subjected to female genital mutilation as a child. At a young age, she began writing about human rights and women's rights. In 2001, she moved to Belgium, where she eventually became a naturalized citizen. She studied journalism and political science and became a well-known voice in public debate, working as an author, opinion maker, and human rights activist. Since 2019, Ms. Kanko has been a Member of the European Parliament for the N-VA party, affiliated with the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group. Within the Parliament, she serves on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), where she focuses on issues such as migration, security, women's rights, and the fight against human trafficking. She is a vocal advocate for a controlled migration policy and the protection of Europe's external borders. Ms. Kanko also champions women's empowerment, equal opportunities, and the defense of European values. In our conversation, Ms. Kanko shares her journey from being a journalism student and activist in her native Burkina Faso, to being a powerful voice in Brussels. We invite veterans of Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance (Force Recon) to talk about their service in Vietnam. Bill Barber and Bruce “Doc” Norton both have stories about conducting deep reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, and direct action missions behind enemy lines. Unlike conventional infantry units, Force Recon operated in small teams, often just six to eight men, inserted by helicopter, boat, or foot deep into enemy-controlled territory. Their primary mission was to locate and observe North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Viet Cong movements, determine enemy strength, and call in airstrikes or artillery on enemy positions. They also conducted raids, prisoner snatches, ambushes, and battle damage assessments. The nature of their work meant they frequently engaged in brutal, close-quarters combat, often fighting their way out of overwhelming enemy forces. Force Recon's training and operational methods set them apart from standard Marine infantry. They were trained in airborne operations, scuba diving, long-range patrolling, and survival in enemy territory. Their missions required a high level of stealth, endurance, and mental toughness, as they could be alone in the jungle for days, surviving on limited rations while avoiding detection. In Vietnam's dense terrain, Force Recon teams had to move silently, leaving no trace, and blend into the jungle to observe enemy troop movements. They carried suppressed weapons, radios for calling in fire support, and often had to break contact with superior enemy forces using a combination of speed, deception, and well-planned extraction procedures. Bill Barber served with the First Force Reconnaissance Company, Third Reconnaissance Battalion in I Corps Vietnam in 1965-1966. He stayed in the Marine Corps after returning from Vietnam and went on to serve in Desert Shield/Desert Storm and Panama Invasion. Bruce “Doc” Norton, a Navy Corpsman who served with Marine Force Recon in Vietnam, later became an author and historian, documenting the experiences of these elite Marines. Norton's writings provide firsthand insight into the brutal and relentless nature of Force Recon missions. His accounts describe the grueling conditions of operating in triple-canopy jungle, where visibility was limited, and the ever-present danger of ambushes, booby traps, and enemy patrols made every step a potential death trap. He wrote about the intense firefights that would erupt when a recon team was compromised, often requiring rapid extraction by helicopter under heavy enemy fire. In these situations, the ability to call in airstrikes and artillery with precision was the difference between survival and annihilation. Norton's experiences also highlight the bond among Force Recon Marines and their dedication to each other. As a corpsman, he was responsible for treating wounded Marines under fire, sometimes having to perform life-saving procedures while rounds cracked through the jungle around them. His books detail moments of heroism, loss, and the sheer physical and mental toll that these missions took on the men who conducted them. Unlike the large-scale battles of conventional Marine units, Force Recon's war was often fought in the shadows, a relentless cycle of stealth, violence, and survival. Marine Force Recon's impact on the Vietnam War was significant. Their intelligence-gathering efforts helped shape Marine operations in I Corps, allowing commanders to anticipate enemy movements and strike before the NVA or Viet Cong could. Their direct action missions disrupted enemy logistics, eliminated key targets, and kept pressure on enemy forces in areas where large Marine units could not operate effectively. Despite their small numbers, Force Recon Marines were a force multiplier, striking fear into the enemy and providing invaluable battlefield intelligence. Le blocage politique à Bruxelles semble enfin proche d'un dénouement, mais tout repose désormais sur Frédéric De Gucht, leader du VLD bruxellois. D'abord porté par une majorité flamande favorable à la N-VA, il se retrouve aujourd'hui isolé, alors que Groen, Vooruit et le CD&V acceptent une coalition sans ce parti. Côté francophone, Les Engagés et le MR sont prêts à avancer sans la N-VA, bien que les libéraux francophones y soient favorables. De Gucht pourrait maintenir son opposition pour renforcer son image en Flandre ou négocier des concessions en faveur de Bruxelles. Un accord autour du mayorat de Schaerbeek pourrait accélérer le processus et faire pression sur lui. Pendant ce temps, il profite des pistes de ski à Verbier, loin des tensions bruxelloises. La situation politique à Bruxelles reste bloquée 288 jours après les élections. Une réunion décisive a lieu aujourd'hui pour évaluer la possibilité de lancer des négociations sans la N-VA. Les vetos entre partis compliquent la formation d'une coalition viable, notamment celui du PS contre la N-VA. Une alliance mathématiquement possible a été proposée, mais elle rencontre des résistances politiques. L'Open VLD, clé du bloc flamand, refuse de céder sur la participation de la N-VA, malgré des pressions croissantes. Son leader, Frédéric De Gucht, affirme que sa position reste inchangée, bien qu'il participe aux discussions. En Flandre, le VLD est sous tension, accusé de trahison s'il accepte une négociation sans la N-VA. Certains éditorialistes dénoncent une manœuvre du PS visant à affaiblir les partis flamands. Si aucun accord n'émerge, le gouvernement fédéral pourrait être contraint d'intervenir. L'issue reste incertaine, entre compromis difficile et possible échec du processus. La Belgique renforce ses liens avec l'industrie de défense wallonne, un secteur clé générant 12 000 emplois, dont 9 000 en Wallonie. Le ministre de la Défense Theo Francken (N-VA) a exprimé son intention de développer la coopération avec ces entreprises, soulignant leur expertise. Le gouvernement prévoit un investissement de 4 milliards d'euros dans la défense, dont une part ira à la Wallonie. Cette évolution marque un changement idéologique pour la N-VA, historiquement pacifiste. En 1991, la question des exportations d'armes avait provoqué une crise politique entre la Flandre et la Wallonie, menant à la régionalisation des licences. Longtemps ignorée par l'État belge, l'industrie wallonne a souffert d'un manque de commandes publiques. Toutefois, un rapprochement est en cours, illustré par un contrat de plus d'un milliard d'euros pour FN Herstal. Ce virage pragmatique s'inscrit dans un contexte où la Belgique cherche à renforcer son industrie de défense. L'avenir confirmera si cette dynamique se traduit par des actions concrètes. Gregory "Matt" Dillon was required to enroll in ROTC at the University of Alabama. Upon graduation, he was required to give two years in the U.S. Army. He ended up serving 24 years, including three tours in Vietnam. He served as operations officer for then-Lt. Col. Hal Moore with the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Air Cavalry Division at the vicious battle of Landing Zone X-Ray in November 1965 In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Col. Dillon explains the events that led up to the Battle of Ia Drang, how the fighting began, the saga of the lost platoon, the enemy's relentless assault on the second day of the battle, and how American air power proved to be a descisive factor in winning the battle.Dillon notes the heroism of the men who fought there and the tremendous leadership of Hal Moore. He also describes the actions in July 1969 that resulted in him receiving the Silver Star. And Dillon describes rescuing wounded men under heavy fire, the enemy AK-47 that he collected and thought he lost forever, and much more.

C'est la question qui dérange et qui n'est pas politiquement correcte. En Belgique, l'industrie de la Défense est surtout localisée en Wallonie. Avec le lâchage des Américains, la Wallonie devrait profiter des investissements à réaliser en matière de défense. Oui, sauf que le ministre de La Défense est Théo Francken, un nationaliste flamand qui tient le chéquier. Il y a quelques années encore, parler d'industrie de la défense, c'était comme parler d'armement nucléaire dans une réunion Greenpeace : malaise général. Aujourd'hui, c'est open bar. On filme au sein des usines de la Défense, on applaudit et on serre des mains au vu et au su de tout le monde. La guerre en Ukraine a transformé ce secteur en star du business. En réalité, l'invasion de l'Ukraine a été une sorte de plan marketing gratuit pour toute l'industrie de la défense en Europe. Et devinez qui se frotte les mains ? La Wallonie, parce que si on parle d'armement en Belgique, on parle de FN, Herstal, de John Cockerill et bien d'autres entreprises. Un secteur qui pèse lourd et qui jusqu'ici est encore largement dominé par le sud du pays. Quant à la Flandre, elle est plus discrète sur le sujet. Enfin, pour l'instant. Je dis pour l'instant parce que coup de théâtre, si je puis dire, c'est maintenant un ministre N-VA, Theo Francken, qui pilote la Défense. Et là, certains commencent à s'inquiéter. Pourquoi ? Today, we'll explore how to make these financial goals meaningful and achievable for every team member with ways to create a sense of shared responsibility. Our guest is Marian Rowland, a seasoned CVPM and regional manager for NVA in South Carolina, who oversees seven veterinary practices. Marian's journey started at the front desk as a receptionist, to use KPIs to create transparency, engage her teams, and make financial metrics accessible and actionable. From selecting key numbers that matter most to each role to aligning financial goals with patient care, Marian offers practical strategies for turning KPIs into tools for motivation. In April of 1972, Lieutenant Thomas Norris was tasked to lead a mission in Vietnam to rescue Lieutenant Colonel Iceal Gene Hambleton. Hambleton had been shot down in enemy territory, and was surrounded by 30,000 enemy NVA soldiers. Rescuing Hambleton was a top priority for the U.S.. As the navigator of a light bomber (with the call sign Bat 21 Bravo), he was an expert in surface-to-air missile countermeasures and was privy to top secret strategic air command operations, so if he was captured and turned over to the Russians, it could result in “irreparable damage to American National Defense”. Norris' team was also tasked with rescuing 1st Lieutenant Mark Clark, an aviator who had been shot down while trying to rescue Hambleton. On the night of April 10th, 1972, Norris' team successfully evaded multiple patrols, located Clark, and brought him to safety. After two more days of unsuccessful attempts to find Hambleton, many were ready to give up the search. Norris and a South Vietnamese soldier named Petty Officer Nyguen Van Kiet decided to give it one more shot.  Again they successfully maneuvered around multiple enemy patrols, and located Hambleton, who was suffering from hunger and exhaustion. On their way back, they encountered two enemy positions, and came under machine gun fire once. Both times they radioed for assistance, and allied airstrikes took out the danger. All three made it back alive. On March 6th, 1976, Lieutenant Thomas Norris was awarded the Medal of Honor for his part in the rescue. Even after many had tried and failed, Norris showed selfless dedication in the face of extreme danger, resulting in the safe return of 1st Lieutenant Mark Clark and Lieutenant Colonel Iceal Gene Hambleton. Lieutenant Michael Thornton served in Vietnam as a Navy SEAL. On October 31st, 1972, then Petty Officer Thornton was assigned to a night-time SEAL patrol. Thornton and three South Vietnamese SEALs were led by Lieutenant Tom Norris, and tasked with gathering intel on North Vietnam's southern advance. After taking down two enemies, Thornton was spotted, and 50 NVA soldiers began chasing  him. In a five-hour firefight, Thornton retreated back to the shore while fending off the enemy. After learning that his leader, Lieutenant Norris, was presumed dead, Thornton ran 500 yards in the direction of the enemy in order to reach Norris' last known position. There he fought off five enemies and found Norris with serious injuries to his head. Thornton put his wounded ally on his shoulders and began to head back to shore, but a friendly artillery round sent them both 20 feet into the air. After hitting the ground, Thorton put Norris back on his soldiers and realized that he was still alive. Thorton carried him 400 yards back to the beach, inflated his life jacket, and began towing him into the sea. When one of the South Vietnamese SEALs was shot in the water, Thornton towed him along as well. He swam for two hours before they were picked up by a friendly ship. On October 15th, 1972, Lieutenant Michael E. Thornton was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on the Halloween of 1973. Lieutenant Norris had been told by his doctors that he couldn't leave the hospital to attend the ceremony, but Thornton had other plans. On the day of the ceremony, Thornton snuck Norris out the back door of the hospital and brought him to the White House so he could attend it. Learn more about your ad choices.
