Order of Service: - Prelude: O Sinner, Come, Thy Sin to Mourn (J. S. Bach) - Hymn 272 - O Sinner, Come Thy Sin To Mourn - A Canticle (p. 105) - Special Music: Psalm 130: Out of the Depths (Max Reger) - Hymn 452 - Out of the Depths I Cry To Thee: vv. 1, 2 - John 19:16-30: 16 Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus and led Him away. 17 And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Je-sus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in He-brew, Greek, and Latin. 21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,' but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ' ” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scrip-ture might be fulfilled which says: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things. 25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accom-plished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. - Special Music: Responsory Hymn: Stricken, Smitten (Every Sunday Organist) - Hymn 297 - Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted: vv. 1, 4 - Homily - Special Music: Canticle (Psalm 64): Lord, Hear the Voice of My Complaint (J. My Story Talk 9 Between Brentwood and Brasenose (1956-1959) Part 2 In our last talk I mentioned that three significant things happened between my leaving school in 1956 and going up to Brasenose in 1959. I gained experience in teaching. I met Eileen, my future wife. And I received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. And it's the baptism in the Spirit that's the subject for today. We'll be talking about the events that led up to it, how I heard about it and how both Eileen and I received it. In August 1957 at a Baptist Union Summer School in the Lake District I met a man called Michael, who mentioned that the following year he was planning to go touring Europe with some Christian friends who owned a car. He asked if I would be interested in going with them and I said yes. I paid to have driving lessons so that I could share in the driving. It was a wonderful holiday, not just because of the breathtaking scenery, but because it was there in Switzerland that I first heard about the baptism in the Holy Spirit. In my book Signs from Heaven I have already recorded the miraculous escape I had from a falling boulder while climbing a mountain and how impressed I was with the simple faith of one of my new friends who prayed for me as he saw it coming straight for me. His name was Laurie and he was clearly moving in a dimension of Christianity that I knew little or nothing about. So I asked him what he had got that I hadn't got. So he started to talk about an experience he had received after his conversion – being baptised with the Holy Spirit he called it – when the Holy Spirit had come and filled him to overflowing. He said he had spoken in tongues and told me I could read about it in the book of Acts. But although I wanted to experience more of God in my life, I wasn't interested in speaking in tongues, and I dismissed the subject from my mind. And I might have ignored it forever had it not been for the remarkable series of events which took place the following summer when both Eileen and I were baptised in the Spirit. In the summer of 1959 we were both sitting in the youth meeting at Eileen's church singing from a well-known chorus book, when I happened to notice a list of books advertised on the back cover, one of which was entitled, The Full Blessing of Pentecost, by Dr. Andrew Murray. The title arrested my attention. Could this be what Laurie had been talking about the previous year in Switzerland? So I decided that it might be good to get it. I mentioned this to Eileen and, without my knowing about it, she wrote to the publishers hoping to buy a copy for me, but a few days later, she received a reply saying the book was no longer available. The following Saturday morning, I went round to see Eileen and she told me that she had tried to get the book for me but that unfortunately it was out of print. A bit disappointed, I thanked her for trying anyway and, after spending the morning with her, returned home from Eileen's to my parents' house for lunch. As the meal was not quite ready, I went into the sitting room to wait. On entering, I happened to notice a book lying on the piano and casually picked it up – The Full Blessing of Pentecost by Dr. Andrew Murray! But how did it get there? No one, except Eileen, knew anything of my interest in the subject. My parents did not know where the book had come from. It is true that my father had always had a large collection of books, but if it was his, he certainly had never read it, and didn't even know that he possessed it. Anyway, why wasn't it in the bookcase and how did it get on the piano? No one had any idea how that book came to be there on the very day that I had been told it was unobtainable. The answer must surely lie in the realm of the supernatural. This was no coincidence. God was confirming to me that I needed to be baptised in the Spirit, and that afternoon, after I had read the book, I got down on my knees and asked God to fill me with the Holy Spirit. But nothing happened! That evening, I went round to Eileen's and told her about the book. And after she had read the book she too started to seek for the baptism in the Holy Spirit. As Baptists, we knew next to nothing about it – only what we had read in Andrew Murray's book, and that, as I look back on it now, did not give an entirely complete picture. As I remember it, it made a strong case for believing that there was an experience of the Holy Spirit beyond what we receive at conversion, but there was no mention of speaking in tongues as the evidence. As a result we weren't exactly sure what we were asking for, but I had the distinct impression that if I was going to receive the Holy Spirit I needed to prepare myself by becoming more holy. I remember thinking that if I could only live a sinless life for a month, or maybe even a week, or even just today, perhaps God would fill me with the Holy Spirit. I remember driving my father's car taking care not to exceed the speed limit when, as I was going down a hill in a 30 zone, I noticed that the speedometer had gone up to 32 m.p.h. Oh no, I thought, I've missed receiving the baptism for another day! Of course, I now understand, and frequently teach, that the Holy Spirit is a gift and can't be earned! But back then I was getting frustrated by trying the achieve an experience of the Spirit by my own efforts and inevitably failing. So I thought I would write to Laurie who had told me about the baptism in the Spirit in the first place. What should I do? To which he replied, David, all I can say is that if you are really thirsty, you will drink. But this was even more frustrating. The problem was, I had no idea how to drink! Laurie lived quite a distance from me and I didn't feel like writing back and saying, Thanks Laurie. That's very helpful, but please, how do I drink? So Eileen and I decided on a different approach. Perhaps we should find a Pentecostal Church and see if they could help us. It turned out that the nearest one was Bethel Full Gospel Church which was about five miles away in Dagenham, and easily reached on our recently acquired Lambretta scooter. So we drove over to take a look at it and discovered from the noticeboard that there was a prayer meeting every Tuesday evening. I was quite nervous about it as I had never been in a Pentecostal meeting before, but we were pleasantly surprised and were impressed with the number of people praying, even though prayers were interspersed with lots of Amens. We, of course, as good Baptists were only used to saying Amen at the end of a prayer! But what really impacted us was the use of the gift of tongues and interpretation. In the middle of the prayer time there were three ‘messages' in tongues each of which was promptly interpreted. And we knew that God was speaking to US. These people did not know who we were. We had arrived just in time for the meeting and had had no time for conversation before the meeting began. So when we heard the opening words of the first interpretation we were completely amazed: You have come into this church seeking to be filled with the Spirit! All three interpretations were equally directly relevant to us, and as a result we spoke with the pastor after the meeting and explained who we were and why we had come. His name was Alfred Webb, and he encouraged us to come the following Tuesday and sit on the front row where anyone ‘seeking the baptism' would be prayed for with the laying on of hands. So that's what we did, but we were rather disappointed when nothing seemed to happen when he laid hands on us. This happened week after week until we finally received after we had come back from our summer holiday in Torquay, Devon. That holiday was significant for several reasons. It was the first time that Eileen and I had been on holiday together and we had borrowed my father's car so that we could take another young couple with us. My father had bought the car before he had passed the driving test so that I could give him lessons. (You may remember that I had learned to drive before we went on that holiday in Switzerland). Dad had not yet passed the test, so was happy to let me borrow it. But, as far as the baptism in the Spirit was concerned, two things were particularly relevant. First, on the two Sundays we were in Torquay we decided to attend Upton Vale Baptist Church which was not far from the Christian Endeavour Holiday Home where we were staying. I was very impressed with the minister's sermon on Hebrews 11:6 and his emphasis on the fact that God rewards those who earnestly seek him. So I had a word with him after the service and told him I was seeking the baptism in the Spirit. Sadly, but not unsurprisingly for a Baptist minister back in 1959, he tried to discourage me from doing so, something which, when I started my course at Oxford a month or so later, influenced my decision to attend a Pentecostal church while I was there rather than a Baptist church. However, that sermon on Hebrews 11:6 on God rewarding those who earnestly seek him did reemphasise a word of prophecy we had received at Bethel a few weeks earlier encouraging us to get up early to pray. Now I am not saying that getting up early to pray is a condition of receiving the baptism, but it could be an indication that we were earnestly seeking, that we were really thirsty (John 7:7-39). So for the rest of that holiday we got up early and prayed. And when we went to the Tuesday prayer meeting after we got back from our holiday, it happened! This time there was another man sitting alongside the pastor on the platform. I had no idea who he was but as soon as the prayer time began he came down to pray for those who were seeking the baptism. Eileen and I were kneeling in the front row and he came to me first. I was kneeling with my head in my hands on the seat of the chair I had been sitting on. The man, who I later learned was a pastor called Harold Young, said, Kneel up, brother. So I moved into an upright kneeling position and he then said, Breathe it in, brother. I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about, and I thought it rather strange. But I was thirsty and unquestioningly did what he said. I took a breath. Then he said, Speak it out brother. Again, I did what he said and I found myself speaking fluently in tongues. And I did not stop until the pastor closed the meeting 45 minutes later! Then someone came up to me and said, You had a mighty baptism, didn't you, brother? To which I replied, Oh, did I? To be honest, it was not at all what I had been expecting. Although I'm not really sure what I was expecting! By this time I had heard or read of so many different testimonies of people receiving the baptism and had realised that in some ways everyone is different, so I was not really sure what I should expect. What I wanted was to be filled with the Holy Spirit. I was not particularly interested in speaking in tongues. What's more, I found myself questioning whether the words I was speaking really were a language. I had studied four different foreign languages at school and it certainly sounded like none of them. So was my experience real? These questions were going through my mind as we were travelling home on our scooter. But then I remembered something that Jesus had said in Luke 11. Our heavenly Father does not give stones or scorpions or snakes to his children when they ask for the Holy Spirit. And on that basis I chose to believe that what I had experienced was real. I'm so glad that I did. Its reality has been confirmed again and again in my life and ministry. But more of that in later talks. But what about Eileen? She had had similar doubts when she heard what Harold Young had said to me and when he laid hands on her she did not receive. However, straight after the meeting he spoke to her and said, You do want to receive don't you? and Eileen said yes. So he took us both into the church vestry and placed his right hand on my head and told me to start speaking in tongues again. Then he placed his other hand on Eileen's head and said, Now you begin to speak too. And she did! And later she told me that it had been in that very vestry that she had received Jesus as her saviour in Bethel Church Sunday school when she was only seven years old. So we were both baptised in the Spirit on the same day, September 8, 1959, just four weeks before I began my course at Brasenose College, Oxford, where I spent a lot of time telling other Christians about the baptism in the Holy Spirit. But we'll be talking about that next time.

On October 3-4, churches around the world will be gathering for a Global Day of Prayer for Revival. In preparation for this event, Scott Brown and Jason Dohm, joined by special guest Jeffery Johnson, are encouraging Christians to highly value public prayer and to actively participate in it in their local church. And, in this podcast, they discuss nine practical rules for corporate prayer meetings. First, pray from the heart. Suppress self-consciousness and pray fervently and sincerely. Second, prepare to pray. Make a short list or mental outline ahead of time of your praises and petitions. Third, pray short, not long-winded prayers. Fourth, pray to God; don’t preach sermons to men. Fifth, pray Scripture. Sixth, pray with confidence in our Savior’s work and sovereignty, knowing that He lives to make intercession for us. Seventh, pray engagingly. Pray loud enough for others to hear. And, as others are praying, don’t daydream, but join in affirming their appeals, either through silent prayer or out loud with “Amens.” Eighth, pray the promises of God. And, ninth, pray in faith, knowing God delights in giving good gifts to His children. Topic Today: 10 Brain Tips to Keep You from Getting Frustrated or Fed Up from the Amen clinic and Doctor Daniel Amen...best selling author. Problem: So many people are dealing with Depression & Anxiety or Health Issues that are caused by the brain and not optimizing this amazing tool. Today I want to talk to you about ways you can optimize your brain/mind on a daily basis. Here is the Challenge & Questions to Ask Yourself? Are you taking care of your mind...your brain...your body? What specifically are you doing and what can you do better? What types of problems or symptoms are you having that might improve your overall life with a little focus and attention to your brain? Solution: 10 Brain Tips to Keep You (and your kids) From Getting Frazzled, Frustrated, or Fed Up 1. Look for the positive. The human brain is hardwired for negativity. Tip: Train your brain to look for successes. 2. Fuel your brain. Feed your brain high-quality foods and start the day with some protein for better focus and energy. Amen- Brain is comprised of 80% water, and being even mildly dehydrated can negatively impact your moods—making you feel more anxious, tense, depressed, or angry—in addition to sapping your energy levels and lowering your ability to concentrate. Tip: Drinking a gallon of water daily will change your life. 3. Exercise to boost blood flow to the brain. Brain uses 20% of the oxygen and blood flow in your body. Anything that impairs blood flow hurts your brain and impairs function. Exercise enhances moods, reduces stress and anxiety, and increases focus and energy. Tip: Daily Rituals in morning of exercise help you win the day. 4. Create a physical space for work and school. Train your brain by setting up physical boundaries. Tip: Do not take work into the bedroom at night or it will impact your rest. 5. Give your brain a break. The ideal amount of time to work on a single task is 75-90 minutes, Learn to Time Block Critical Tasks around these 90 min blocks. Take mini breaks. Tip: This does not mean TV or Social Media Break... 6. Share the load. Community, Mentoring, Personal Trainers, Friends, and Family all help to lower stress, anxiety and overwhelm. Tip: Join a small masterminds, groups or attend networking events... 7. Practice mental hygiene. In a pandemic, mental hygiene is just as important as washing your hands. Amen Clinics calls these ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) that steal your happiness. Sometimes naming items helps to identify and eliminate negative thoughts. Tip: This week try to Recognize your negative patterns or thoughts immediately when they happen. 8. Encourage active listening at home (and work). Learn to listen first and then repeat back what you heard. It helps others feel "heard" and also helps to clarify and eliminate any miscommunications. Tip: In business this is a great way to help others feel you are listening and respect and loyalty and performance... 9. Tell your brain it's time to relax. At the end of the day, learn to shut down your mind...super super difficult I know...I've been there. Find activities, boundaries and even rituals that help you shut down your mind...like journaling, meditation, music, etc. I find it really helpful to list what is on my mind for tomorrow so it helps you to let it go easier. Tip: I've spoken about the idea of the Corporate Athlete…meaning the growth is in the recovery not the stress... 10. Stick to a sleep schedule. Amen Clinics suggests- While you're sleeping, your brain is hard at work performing some very critical functions necessary to keep it operating at optimal levels. For example, during sleep, your brain cleans or washes itself by eliminating cellular debris and toxins that build up during the day (basically taking out the neural trash), consolidates learning and memory, and prepares for the following day. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that children ages 6-12 get 9-12 hours and teenagers 13-18 years old get 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Adults should aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Adequate sleep improves attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, moods, and mental health. Tip: Create a sleep routine for yourself and your children and stick to it. Anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, and other mental health conditions are real and it does not help to just avoid or sweep them under the rug. Find ways to take your #1 Asset (your brain) and turn it into a super power and ultimate tool for growth...practice self care. I think it is so important for us to remember that we are not our minds. Our brain is a tool and like anything else, you MUST keep it sharp, clean and focused. I highly recommend any of Dr Amens books on Mental Health and Brain health and he also has an incredible podcast that he and his wife do which gives you small nuggets of health and nutrition information as well as activities for the brain and life in general. Would you see faith strengthened in the little ones among us? Then shout your loud amens go God. Would you see churches planted? Then sing aloud to the Lord. Would you see godless politicians bend their knee to Christ? Then raise your voice to the God who hears and acts. He fulfills his promises and every one of those promises in Christ is yes and amen.
It's episode 148 and we are coming to you from the supply closet at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Broussard! Paige Latiolais brings us ALL the AMENS live from the Healing the Whole Person Retreat put on by John Paul II Healing Center. It's early in the morning ya'll, and the content is equally goofy as it is enlightening! Paige reminded us of the importance in following the call of the Holy Spirit as she explains it was a nudge to attend Mass that sparked her desire for more. She would go on to complete RCIA and later write a book about finding our identity in Christ! "I Am Who You Say I Am" contains reflections and Truth spoken from God that the reader can use to directly replace the lie of the enemy. Who doesn't need some capital "T" Truth renewing their mind, Can I Getta Amen!?Shoutout to Sacred Heart of Jesus in Broussard (first parish to make it on a Rushmore!) and John Paul II Healing Center for sharing their sacred space with us!

During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology, we're continuing our “Sizzling Summer” series with more hang time on the porch with biblical culturalist, Professor Kristi McLelland. Her first visit to BPT was so revelatory and resonate that we begged her to come back so that we could keep swimming in life-giving passages like Genesis 2 and Luke 8 and Romans 16 that prove the significant – not subjugated - role women play in biblical narrative, in Jesus' incarnate life and ministry, as well as Apostle Paul's and the early churches' mission to share the Living Hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. Now since this is a part-two kind of message and this episode compliments the one before like queso does chips – they're much better in tandem! Therefore, if possible, please listen to last week's episode “What God Says About Women” first and then grab a ginormous cup of coffee, a notebook, your favorite pen, your widest grin and your Bible – unless you're driving or tying macrame knots for a plant hanger of course! – and come hang out on the porch with us. Love us some Michele Richard, y'all! Mommas are going to get some Amens out of this mini episode. This mom of 10 is an incredibly kind, compassionate, and relatable human. You sure to love her as much as we do!
Saints from ancient days have punctuated their prayers, both spoken & sung, public & private with “Amen.” An early church father, Jerome, described the early church's practice of hearty “Amens” this way: “Where else does the ‘Amen' resound in the likeness of thunder of the divine heaven & the empty temples of pagan idols are shaken?” So then, adopting this practice isn't just keeping a tradition alive. Rather, as we declare in unison hearty Amens we're doing a few things. A temptation in Western Christianity is to limit faith to what happens between our ears. But by shouting joyful amens, we use our body to vocalize our agreement with both God's promises & what He's produced in us by grace.
Y'all, what an incredibly delightful afternoon spent with Fr. Savoie! In true Can I Getta Amen fashion, we cover a wide variety of topics. From his journey to the priesthood to the struggle of forgiving ourselves, and Susan Lucci love to Saint Thomas Aquinas

Listen as Pastor Marc Goodwin preaches on Deuteronomy 27 about how we can't plead ignorance or innocence, but we can plead Christ.
“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants--things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.” Today, we want to summarize the basic characteristics of the Book of Revelation: It is a Christ-centered book. To be sure, all Scripture speaks of the Savior; but the Book of Revelation especially magnifies the greatness and glory of Jesus Christ. The book is, after all, the revelation of Jesus Christ and not simply the revelation of future events. It is an "open" book. John was told not to seal the book (Rev. 22:10) because God's people need the message it contains. Revelation can be understood, despite the fact that it contains mysteries that may never be comprehended until we meet at the throne of God. It is a book filled with symbols. Biblical symbols are timeless in their message and limitless in their content. For instance, the symbol of "Babylon" originates in Genesis 10-11, and its meaning grows as you trace it through Scripture, climaxing with Revelation 17-18. It is a book of prophecy. This is definitely stated in Revelation 1:3; 22:7, 10, 18-19; 10:11. The letters to the seven churches of Asia Minor dealt with immediate needs in those assemblies, needs that are still with us in churches today; but the rest of the book is devoted almost entirely to prophetic revelations. It is a book with a blessing. We have already noted the promise in Revelation 1:3, as well as the six other "beatitudes" scattered throughout the book. It is not enough simply to hear (or read) the book; we must respond to its message from the heart. We must take the message personally and say a believing "Amen!" to what it says. (Note the many "Amens" in the book: Rev. 1:6-7, 18; 3:14; 5:14; 7:12; 19:4; 22:20-21.) It is a relevant book. What John wrote about would "shortly come to pass" (Rev. 1:1) because "the time is at hand" (Rev. 1:3). (Note also Rev. 22:7, 10, 12, 20.) The word shortly does not mean "soon" or "immediately," but "quickly, swiftly." God does not measure time as we do (2 Peter 3:1-10). No one knows when our Lord shall return; but when He begins to open the seals of the scroll (Rev. 6:1), events will occur with speed and without interruption. It is a majestic book. Revelation is the book of "the throne," for the word throne is found forty-six times throughout. This book magnifies the sovereignty of God. Christ is presented in His glory and dominion! It is a universal book. John saw nations and peoples (Rev. 10:11; 11:9; 17:15) as part of God's program. He also saw the throne room of heaven and heard voices from the ends of the universe! It is a climactic book. Revelation is the climax of the Bible. All that began in Genesis will be completed and fulfilled in keeping with God's sovereign will. He is "Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending" (Rev. 1:8). What God starts, He finishes! But before visiting the throne room of heaven (Revelation 4-22), we must pause to listen to "the Man among the lampstands" as He reveals the personal needs in our churches and in our own hearts. "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says unto the churches!" (Revelation 1-3) God bless!

This is an episode you absolutely so NOT want to miss. Take a minute. Take some notes, and apply what I'm going to talk about today. I go through dozens of articles, podcasts and resources every morning when I wake up to fill my mind with the right type of focus and content. I do this to deal with all the negative that I involuntarily receive every day. Well I want to go through an article with you today from Dr Amen from the Amen Clinics…best selling author, podcast host and someone that has done hundreds of thousands of brain scans on individuals suffering from depression, anxiety and all types of negative emotions. I absolutely feel it is so packed with content I am going to read it to you rather than just summarize it. It's got some critical information I feel can help each of you in the community. Talk about stress. If you're working from home, supervising distance learning for your children, and dealing with the anxiety of the pandemic, it can be overwhelming. At Amen Clinics, there's been a big increase in people asking for help to cope with it all. The neuropsychiatrists at Amen Clinics have come up with the following 10 brain tips to keep you (and your kids) from getting frazzled, frustrated, or fed up. 10 Brain Tips to Keep You (and your kids) From Getting Frazzled, Frustrated, or Fed Up 1. Look for the positive. The human brain is hardwired for negativity and during stressful times, like now, it's easy to focus on what's wrong with your life. You need to train your brain to look for the positive to enhance your moods. An easy way to do this is to start each day by saying “Today is going to be a great day.” This causes the brain to search for reasons why it will be great. End each day with “What went well today?” This is also a very easy lesson to teach your kids that will help them maintain a more positive outlook. 2. Fuel your brain. Feed your brain high-quality foods and start the day with some protein for better focus and energy. Also, be aware that your brain is comprised of 80% water, and being even mildly dehydrated can negatively impact your moods—making you feel more anxious, tense, depressed, or angry—in addition to sapping your energy levels and lowering your ability to concentrate. Being dehydrated by just 2% impairs performance in tasks that require attention, immediate memory skills, and physical performance, according to research in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. This can be especially important for kids with ADD/ADHD who struggle with attention and concentration. 3. Exercise to boost blood flow to the brain. Even though your brain, which weighs about 3 pounds, makes up only 2% of your body's weight, it uses 20% of the oxygen and blood flow in your body. Anything that impairs blood flow hurts your brain and impairs function. Brain SPECT imaging measures blood flow in the brain and low blood flow on SPECT has been seen with ADD/ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, traumatic brain injury, substance abuse, suicide, and more. One of the best ways to promote healthy blood flow to the brain (and to your kids' brains) is to exercise on a regular basis. Exercise enhances moods, reduces stress and anxiety, and increases focus and energy. Absolutely something I have gained benefit from... 4. Create a physical space for work and school. This way, when you (or your kids) enter that space—even if it's just a desk in the corner of the living room—it signals to the brain that you're in work mode (or your kids are in learning mode). 5. Give your brain a break. The ideal amount of time to work on a single task is 75-90 minutes, according to Bob Pozen, author of Extreme Productivity and a lecturer at MIT. Taking mini-breaks during the day boosts productivity. To reset and re-energize, try a brief meditation session (improves focus and attention), deep breathing (relieves stress and anxiety), or a quick walk (a natural mood booster). Brendon Bruchard reinforces this… This does not mean TV or Social Media Break... 6. Share the load. Depending on your anxiety level, consider creating a learning pod or “pandemic pod.” Pods are small groups of children—about 3 to 10 kids—who learn together in person. Some pods hire a tutor to teach the children while others let the parents split the duties. This means your brain gets a break from classroom time so you can focus on your own work. It also creates a sense of community, which is beneficial for the brain. The same can be said for small masterminds, groups or networking... 7. Practice mental hygiene. In a pandemic, mental hygiene is just as important as washing your hands. If you find yourself (or your kids) saying things like, “Things will never go back to normal” or “We're all going to get COVID and die,” it's time to eliminate the ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) that steal your happiness. Whenever you or your children have a thought that makes you feel sad, mad, nervous, or out of control, write it down and talk back to it. This can be so helpful for moods and behavior. Recognizing these behaviors and thoughts totally empowers you... 8. Encourage active listening at home. To make sure all family members know what their role is in the household, practice active listening. This is when you repeat back what you've understood when another person is talking. This helps avoid the miscommunication and conflicts that can harm relationships. When we have great relationships, our brains tend to do much better. In business this is a great way to help others feel you are listening and respect and loyalty and performance... 9. Tell your brain it's time to relax. At the end of the day, put your work materials out of sight, if possible. This helps signal to your brain that it's time to power down and relax. To promote relaxation, inhale calming scents, such as lemon, lavender, honeysuckle, rose, jasmine, or vanilla. I've spoken about the idea of the Corporate Athlete…meaning the growth is in the recovery not the stress... 10. Stick to a sleep schedule. While you're sleeping, your brain is hard at work performing some very critical functions necessary to keep it operating at optimal levels. Create a sleep routine for yourself and your children and stick to it. Obviously there are seasons of life to consider with this, but overall its important to maintain this part of sleep... Anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, and other mental health conditions can't wait. During these uncertain times, your mental well-being is more important than ever and waiting until life gets back to “normal” is likely to make your symptoms worsen over time. I think it is so important for us to remember that we are not our minds. Our brain is a tool and like anything else, you MUST keep it sharp, clean and focused. I highly recommend any of Dr Amens books on Mental Health and Brain health and he also has an incredible podcast that he and his wife do which gives you small nuggets of health and nutrition information as well as activities for the brain and life in general. check it out. I'll leave the link to this article and his podcast in my show notes…. Thanks for listening. George Wright III amenclinics.com plus, check out the podcast on itunes and google play
