Send us a textALL OF THIS UNREAL TIME Published by Rough Trade Back this weekend with a double header, we turn to All of This Unreal Time by Mr Max Porter.  Described in the foreword as ‘a gift, written in friendship' it is an elusive, ever moving torrent of apology, love and gratitude. A response to the countless human and non-human lives that intersect with and impact on our own.Written during the first, weird summer months of the pandemic, the piece  blossomed into a collaboration commissioned by Manchester Film festival. Directed by Aoife McArdle, it features Max's friend and long time collaborator Cillian Murphy as Unreal Time's ‘everyman' as well as an incredible score by Aaron & Bryce Dessner and Jon Hopkins. Part One - available from Friday - Wasteful writing, hardcore forgiveness & confessional booths. As with all the best Rambles the conversation soon went elsewhere. Part Two - Bank Holiday Monday - prison writing groups, embroided life jackets & visiting the West bank with Palfest. ‘Strange and Beautiful.'  The Guardian Books mentioned in conversation The Gift - Lewis Hyde Essayism - Brian DillonOn Forgiveness - Richard Holloway Is A River Alive? - Robert MacfarlaneWe Need New Stories - Nesrine Malik@fieldzine www.fieldzine.comwww.patreon.com/fieldzine

It's World Piano Day! I've made several mixes over the years for Piano Day and each time I wonder if I'll find enough tracks for an interesting mix. And every year it comes together and surprises me with how much I like the finished set. This mix starts with a tune everyone should be familiar with - Eno's Music For Airports 1/2. This recording is by Bruce Brubaker from his fine EP - Eno Piano 2. To make things interesting I played two tracks from it simultaneously and I think it worked pretty well.  While collecting tracks for the mix I was happy to find a piano album from Daniel Lanois. It's from 2022 and I had no idea it existed. I'm a big fan of the Necks so I was also excited to use one of their tracks for the first time. At least I think I've never used their music in a mix before.  LINKS TO ALL THE MUSIC USED IN THIS MIX: https://bruce-brubaker.bandcamp.com/album/eno-piano-2 https://whitelabrecs.bandcamp.com/album/quiet-rooms https://jonhopkins.bandcamp.com/album/ritual https://tapelooporchestra.bandcamp.com/album/psalm019-sabbat-de-voix https://lawrenceenglish.bandcamp.com/album/even-the-horizon-knows-its-bounds https://thehumblebee.bandcamp.com/album/the-trembling-line https://h-mo.bandcamp.com/album/bark-up-the-spirit-tree https://gallerysix.bandcamp.com/album/distance https://latencyrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/latency-alla-villa-medici-ii https://thenecksau.bandcamp.com/album/bleed https://www.amazon.com/Player-Piano-Daniel-Lanois/dp/B0B7BYVZJK https://benlukasboysen.bandcamp.com/album/falling-into-place-original-score https://modernarecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-shoe-factory https://sine-music.bandcamp.com/album/dreamscapes https://www.amazon.com/Nature-Daylight-Piano-Version/dp/B0DKX181VJ   I hope you enjoy this latest installment in celebration of the piano. His latest Impermanence EP, released on Last Night on Earth, showcases his signature style, where tense drums and euphoric melodies merge into thoughtful electronic compositions.  On this Balance Selections, the English producer flexes with an exquisite two hours of scalpel-sharp dance music. 『Less is More.

I have hosted more guest mixes than ever this year, which I love because it exposes me to new artists and new mix concepts. Many of these mixes have come through the fine folks at Nettwerk Music Group. It's appropriate then that this final guest mix of the year comes from one of their artists - Hollie Kenniff. I absolutely love the way this mix ebbs and flows, the tracks blend together perfectly. Hollie just released her fourth album, For Forever, which is a lush, melodic ambient record that uses electronic and acoustic instrumentation to create an emotional, ethereal listening experience.   Here's what Hollie says about her music: “My hope is that my music encourages others to explore their inner landscapes and to inspire reflection. I want my music to be a musical backdrop for meaningful and transformative moments in other people's lives.”   I'm a music mix dork who loves a good segue between songs and this beautiful mix from Hollie has a ton of them, an absolute joy to soak in.   Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00   Hollie Kenniff - Over Ocean Waves (Anita Tatlow Remix) 02:08   Kazuma Okabayashi - Rainfall 04:55   Warmth - Receiver 07:40   Tangent Universes - An Elegant. We're winding out 2024 with a beautiful Take 5. Jamie xx is one of my favourite producers, so it's really special to cap off what's been a big year, with the man himself. Looking back the last couple of years, the final Take 5 has been really reflective. Caroline Polachek was poetic at the end of a huge 2023, and he year before Jon Hopkins gifted us a transcendent set of songs. All three artists came to that conversation at the top of their game, but with a wisdom and calm that comes with age, with experience, and freedom. For Jamie, I asked him to choose songs of surrender. He embraced the theme and then some, and his songs confirmed why music is such a beautiful language for him. From vintage surf movies, to legendary Brazilian music, deep house cuts and Jonathan Richman, this is a beautiful meditation on life, and a life in sound.G.

What does it sound like miked in the bathtub? Matt talked about being at Strongroom Studios, tape flying off the machine, why you need hardware synths, MDing for Björk and Ellie Goulding, how to record ambient music, and why real guitar pedals rock! Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Matt Robertson, a British-born, Canadian-based, 3x Grammy-nominated composer, producer, and musical director. Matt has worked with Björk, Anohni, Arca, The Cinematic Orchestra, and Ellie Goulding as musical director and orchestrator / arranger.  He has released four albums under his own name to date, balancing ambient sound design alongside warm organic techno and ripples of delicate electronics. His albums ‘Forecast', ‘In Echelon' and ‘Entology', have been described as “symphonic electronica and leftfield techno that's cinematic in scale” (Mixmag), “magnificent…wild, electronic sound” (The Line Of Best Fit) and “Nils Frahm's modern classical meets Jon Hopkins' grainy techno” (MOJO). Growing up listening to a healthy mixture of Jean-Michel Jarre and Jimmy Smith, Matt graduated from the University of Surrey before working at recording studios in London learning how to fix, and later build, some of his own synths. Working with a collection of vintage, modern and DIY synths, and combining electronic music production with classical composition and cinematic soundscapes; artists, producers, and film composers alike seek his enveloping and distinct sound. His work with Anoushka Shankar awarded him 2 Grammy nominations, and he recently scored the films ‘The New Corporation – The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel', and' ‘Navalny'. The solo piano: a sound that's been evolving for over 300 years. It's perfectly happy all by itself, but it also plays exceptionally well with others. Flexible by design, the piano has been a mainstay in classical music and jazz, and a key element in traditional and popular music. With the arrival of ambient, minimal and new age music in the 1970s, the piano was expanded and dematerialized through studio magic, and combined with ambient and electronic textures to create spatial sound images. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the acoustic piano meets ambient atmospheres, on a program called CONFLATION. Music is by JON HOPKINS, TALE OF US, BEN LUKAS BOYSEN, ROBERT RICH & MARKUS REUTER, HAROLD BUDD & CLIVE WRIGHT, CHRIS WALLA, and CHRISTOPHER WILLITS & RYUICHI SAKAMOTO. Ross Harper on The DJ Sessions On Location Sessions at ADE 2023 10/19/23   About Ross Harper - “Really, my artiste, you amaze me. The lengths you will go to in order to accomplish your own destruction” - An excerpt from Neuromancer by William Gibson I have had an unswerving devotion to electronic music ever since my heady baptism in the 90s London rave scene which culminated in an intense 5 years of studying music production. Since then I have spent a lifetime delving deeper and deeper into production.  My music has been compared to Jon Hopkins, Robert Miles and Orbital. Although these similarities are discernable, I am simply an artist determined to do my own thing.  My major early influences as Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Portishead, Morcheeba and then everything 90s rave. I grew up in a single parent family and my mum has been my greatest role model, she was a Children's Party Entertainer for most of her adult life.  My first name Ross means “headland”, the piece of land that sticks out into the sea and helps create somewhere wild, as well as the bay where people can enjoy the sea. My family name, Harper, comes from ancient times, Harper's are traditionally musicians who play music at festivals and for the royal gentry. My ambition is to live up to both these names I have been given. Every DJ set I share is a blank slate waiting to be written, I play anything from techno, drum & bass, deep house, dark disco, progressive house, cool ambient and everything in between. My personal productions are rich, varied and never to a script. The Ambient Girl series explores downtempo and has seen support from Cici, Lemonella and Ben Malone on Kiss FM. In Your Eyes e-zine dubbed it as “strong candidate for electronic album of the year”.  Whereas my beat driven works have been supported by industry legends like Charlotte de Witte, Enrico Sangiuliano, John Dignweed, Kölsch, Laurent Garner, Martin L Gore of Depeche Mode, Sasha, and Nemone on BBC Radio 6. I am also the founding father of City Wall Records, where my A&R skills have signed tracks played in numerous Boiler Room sets including SNTS at Kompass and Ancient Methods in Berlin. I hold a weekly residency on www.aajamusic.com every Friday from 1000hrs GMT. I also present a monthly two hour show on AAJA on the fourth Monday of every month at 1800hrs where I share a plethora of cutting edge new underground releases.   About The DJ Sessions -   “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience.   Jon Hopkins pays attention. He has a ear for the smallest details and a deft touch both as a pianist and a producer.  I feel this interview is very timely as the rise of psychedelic therapy has caught the imagination of so many. Jon has made music that is so perfect for those wishing to go deeper with their experiences in that hugely rewarding domain.  His is the mindset that wants to expand and to meditate instead of flex and win the popularity contests in the game of music. Very refreshing.  We get into his beginnings in the classical world, his lack of patience with distracting factors and on to his success story and on to his musings on the current state of being a musician releasing music in this arguably confusing time.   ____________ The nitty returns ! I was fortunate enough to get an early copy of Andrew Huang's first plugin :) It's a collaboration with Baby Audio called “Transit” It really inspired me to get my hands dirty and to explore it's outer ways.  I stacked up about 30 or so instances to pull off a tonal transition that is rather epic ! I learned from an older me on this one. In EP 58 I explored a related idea in Melodyne. Here's that show  ****** **** ** * SPECIAL DEAL !!   I'm happy to be able to offer listeners to the show a 10 % discount on TRANSIT when using the code BABYHOWA at check out Here's the plugin!! Check it :) https://babyaud.io/transit Also.. Here's the Ableton session called “The Bends” that I made to demo this  (sadly I forgot it's the 11.3.10b5 Beta version of Ableton you'll need to run this .. oops!)  _____________   Big ups to Catechism and REZN for their music on this show.  It's from an album called “Infected Ambient Works” Here's the link to it https://rezzzn.bandcamp.com/album/infected-ambient-works _____________   A massive shout to show sponsor Soundtoys! At the start of this episode I add the New SUPER PLATE and the classic PHASE MISTRESS plugins to a tape jam that's fresh from my new studio and it just enters into a whole Different dimension.  These are Shockingly good plugins! Some of the very best you can find.  That's why I'm so chuffed to work with these legends !  Check their masterful work here  https://www.soundtoys.com   ____________ If you want to directly help support me in the pod work please consider joining my  Patreon  https://www.patreon.com/HOWA All sounds from this episode will go to those on the upper tier !

East Forest is a multidisciplinary artist, known by some for his 5-hour album "Music for Mushrooms," designed to accompany a psychedelic journey. Other folks may know him from his album "Ram Dass," where he created beautiful soundscapes to accompany interviews he did with Ram Dass, in fact the last known interviews ever done with Ram Dass before he passed into the next realm. Some people know him from his podcast, Ten Laws with East Forest, an extraordinary interview podcast where he talks with the likes of Duncan Trussell, Aurbrey Marcus, Danica Patrick. He has found a unique way to combine music, meditation, technology, and the experience of deep listening as a doorway, as a pathway towards acknowledging our own human essence. Its fair to say his creations are not just musical compositions; they are gateways to spiritual encounters, designed to inspire introspection. In this episode, we dive deep into his thoughts around the creative process, and get into his early days as a musician, when he was an up and coming Brooklynite around the time of Occupy Wall Street. We speak about his success, and about how success can actually make the creative process much more difficult. We talk a little bit about generative AI and how it's coming for musicians, the ambient musicians in particular, and what can be done about it. We of course chat about his collaboration with Ram Das and how the track "Sit Around the Fire," a collaboration with Jon Hopkins, was created. I just love this dude and his commitment to simple honesty, to discipline, to ritual, to reverence, to creativity. He's good people and a great artist. One of my most enjoyable conversations in recent memory.
