There are few intergenerational figures in a music scene that sees bands come and go on a weekly basis. Chief among those that are, however, are Al Grigg and Tom Wallace. Best friends since college, the pair first played together as part of 2000s indie wunderkinds Red Riders, before transferring their guitar-loving and hook-wielding expertise over to the garage-rock world with Palms circa 2011. Here, they lay out their life in music, both on and off the road, on the line in their most in-depth interview to date. Whether you came up circa the Hopetoun or circa the Oxford Art Factory, there's some long lines down these palms well worth tracing. Intensity Sunshine is out now via Ivy League/Mushroom. It wouldn't matter if Newton Faulkner had one hit or not - he'd still be a wonder. Whether it's his inventive and dizzying guitar playing or his stirring, emotive voice, Faulkner has remained one of the more charming and entertaining prospects of the singer-songwriter circuit - both in his native UK and abroad. He's spent most of the last decade working on his terms, outside of the structure of major labels and primarily touring with little more than a pedal board and his tour manager - who also happens to be his sister. What can we learn from the freewheelin' Newton Faulker? Quite a lot, as it turns out. From teenage punk bands to sold-out theatres, there's not much this ginger ninja hasn't done. Newton's new EP 'Chapter I - I Can Pretend' is out now via Battenberg Records. Are they the most punk band in power-pop or the most power-pop band in punk? Really, it doesn't matter - any way you cut it, Joyce Manor have been one of the most consistent and engaging bands in rock throughout the 2010s. Never quite settling, and constantly switching things up, the band has found a cult following that's lead to sold-out shows and deafening sing-alongs in just about every corner of the planet. Not that this kind of ambition was realised by a young Barry Johnson, however - starting out as a young punk in Op Ivy worship bands, he could have never forseen how his career would go down. Hell, he didn't even envision having career. Prior to a show at Sydney's Oxford Art Factory, Johnson raced through his musical upbringing and his coming of age right through to where the band stands in the present tense.a Special thanks to Cat Clarke, Cooking Vinyl Australia, the Oxford Art Factory and Adam Buncher. Today Joey speaks to the owner of Oxford Art Factory Mark Gerber. When Mark Gerber moved to Australia in 1971 he was a ten year old with a budding appreciation for the arts. His life to that point split between Denmark and the Netherlands. His new home city of Sydney would be the launch pad for global careers, as a musician, dj, actor, model, and promoter all driven by an obsessive fascination culture - the new and the exciting. But it was in 2005 when he took over a former record store three blocks from Hyde Park in the inner Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst that a long term dream of an inclusive, innovative creative space would come to life. It would be called the Oxford Art Factory and over the past 11 years, under Mark’s management, it has go onto become one the most respected cultural institutions in Sydney.
"It's eleven tracks with a traditional Hardcore Superstar sound and a lot of party vibe to it," enthused vocalist Joakim Berg ahead of their yet to be released new album You Can't Kill My Rock 'n Roll. " The last album was more diverse sounding compared to the other albums we released. Now we are back to the traditional Hardcore Superstar sound and I think the fans will love this album. With the last album, 50% of the people were saying what the fuck are they doing now and 50% were like okay, it's good, but it's not Hardcore Superstar. We had to get that album out of our systems but now we're back and on track!"Hardcore Superstar have dominated the sleaze metal scene, particularly in their home country of Sweden, since 1997 and as Berg admits they always had only one goal on their mind."World domination," he shrugged. "Of course every band that starts wants to become rock stars and have world domination or whatever but through the years you realize that it's not that easy to do that (laughs). You have to think about other things that make you happy like writing songs and the love for music. That's an important thing for young bands that start out today to practice on your instruments and write a lot of songs and not think that much about the image because the image is, of course, good to have but the first thing is the music. The music comes first, the image comes second."Heavy had a great chat with Joakim while he was in the middle of making dinner for his kids. To hear the full piece, including news on next months Hardcore Superstar tour, what has changed with the band since they were here last ten years ago, Hardcore Superstar's guide to having fun with music and their role in bringing back sleaze and dirtiness to rock and roll plus more, tune in to the attached audio.Tour dates:June 14 - Oxford Art Factory, SydneyJune 15 - Prince Bandroom, MelbourneJune 16 - Woolly Mammoth, BrisbaneJune 17 - Fowler's Live, Adelaide (Licenced/all ages)
The final BTRMIX of 2017 is here and it's a big one. Power couple of Sydney (UK) bass music, Ruins. With years of collective promoting and punter experience between them, Ruins have solidified themselves as one the most forward thinking duos in Sydney bass music today. With huge affiliations, Construct to FBi Radio, Ruins constantly push the blurred line between techno and bass music, this mix is no exception. Broken Beats, 4x4, Amens, this mix has it all. You can catch Ruins thump out some of these tunes live on NYE at Oxford Art Factory in support of Jon Hopkins; Big Ting & Something Else hosting the gallery. You can keep up to date with all Ruin related news here: https://www.facebook.com/ruinsmusicau/
Gus has the segments and deals with irresponsible Youtubers, irresponsible gun owners and irresponsible parents in Trainwreck. Following this, we hold a Plebishite to ascertain whether "Poos in the News" should stay as a segment, then after the usual hilarity of "One Star Reservoir" Rig brings us the story of Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier who refused to acknowledge that WWII had ended until 1972, and thus stayed hidden in the Phillipines being a one-man chaos machine.
In our first live show of the season, Rig takes the segments and dominates them with a strong combination of poo-centric news and phone-centric sex apps. Gus then follows up with the Shitshow Shpotlight by taking us through a 2-year period at Microsoft that saw the world's most irritating virtual assistant created, which then spawned the weirdest erotic fiction in history. Bottom line? It was all Melinda Gates' fault. Recorded live @ Oxford Art Factory Sydney, December 3rd 2017.
Solid Effort: Emerging out of Wollongong (aka The Coal Coast) in 2013, Solid Effort have been working up the ranks ever since with their self-branded style of music they like to call “leisure punk”. They released their debut EP ‘Ballad of Bulli’ in 2015 and are working on their first album, which is expected to drop sometime in 2017. Extensive touring, with support slots for The Courtneys, Gooch Palms and Hockey Dad (just to name a few), have helped build a solid following for these guys. This 5-piece unit are living up to their namesake, with every track dropped a true ‘solid effort’. Recorded at the Oxford Art Factory as part of the VOLUMES Festival in Sydney on the 27th of August, 2016. Recorded and mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan, Hownowmer: Hownowmer are a 3 piece hard rock band from Melbourne, and have been shredding up the scene since late 2015. Their brooding brand of building rock packs a punch, and frontman Ben Salter delivers with hard hitting vocals and sultry guitar riffs. Salter is also known from many previous works, such as Giants Of Science, The Gin Club, The Wilson Pickers, The Young Liberals and his own solo records. Jacqueline Dortmans (bass) and Harley McLeod (drums) make up parts two and three of this powerhouse unit. Recorded at The Triffid in Brisbane on the 31st of July, 2016. Recorded by Reuben Aptroot & mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 12th of March 2017. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
Adelaide's Horror My Friend may have put out "Stay In, Do Nothing" at the start of 2016; but they spent most of the year doing exactly the opposite. As one of the most exciting and promising rock bands in the country right now, the trio have undergone a touring regime that has seen them play with the likes of Camp Cope, Pity Sex and Hockey Dad among many more. This episode sees the band joking about and reminiscing in the back alleys of Darlinghurst before a show at the Oxford Art Factory back in October. Josh, Sam and Tom get into their high-school days, their make-or-break debut album and their time moonlighting in West Thebarton Brothel Party. Horror My Friend's new single "DIYS" is out now. Infinite Void: Infinite Void's name might have you thinking black metal, but the Melbourne quartet are firmly planted in atmospheric punk and post-punk, taking cues as much from the members' past punk bands as from the smudged sonics of My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division and Pornography-era Cure. They released their debut self-titled album through Poison City Records in 2012 and had Steven Smith from Scul Hazzards manning the desk for the sessions, and since them have released some very rare split 7” records to keep the ball rolling. Recorded live at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney on the 17th of February, 2016. Recorded & mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan. Screaming Females: Mixing equal parts Dinosaur Jr. and Sleater-Kinney, the Brunswick trio of Marissa Paternoster (guitar/vocals), Michael Abbate (bass), and Jarrett Dougherty (drums) strives to embody the spirit of indie rock in its purest form; Screaming Females book their own shows and self-released many of their own records to bring their guitar-driven rock to the people without compromise. In 2007 the band fired its opening shot, self-releasing its debut full-length, Baby Teeth. The band quickly followed up with its sophomore album, What If Someone Is Watching Their T.V.?, which was self-released and later reissued by Don Giovanni Records, with whom the band has enjoyed a good relationship. Between 2010 and 2012, Screaming Females released their fourth album, Castle Talk, and followed up with their fifth album, the Steve Albini-engineered Ugly, in 2012. The band teamed up with producer Matt Bayles to record its 2015 studio effort, Rose Mountain and embarked on a tour that saw them travel to Australia for the first time, from which the set you’re about to hear derives from. Recorded live at the PBS FM Studios in Melbourne on the 8th of August 2016. Engineered by Jeremy Smith. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 6th of November 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
Sleepwalks: Starting up in the tail end of the noughties in Brisbane, Sleepwalks is a unity between three friends, David Hansford, Kevin Fincham and Damien Masters, and their love for loud yet simply structured music, known to some as the ‘Grunge’ genre. They released their first record ‘The Milk Has Gone Sour’ in 2011 though Z-Man Records and it encapsulated their holiday to Chicago to record with Steve Albini, whose name you’ll see in the liner notes of records belonging to Shellac, Big Black, Pixies, Breeders, PJ Harvey and little known band called Nirvana. They started writing and recording their follow-up album in 2012, but it wasn’t until 2016 until they finished and released it to the world and titled it ‘Kingdom’. Their performances are rare to come by, so it was a treasure to capture this band picking up their instruments again and breathing new life into the raw materials. Recorded live at the Greenslopes Bowls Club as part of Sonic Masala Fest 2016, Brisbane, on the 13th of August 2016. Recorded by Reuben Aptroot & mixed by Branko Cosic. You Beauty!: You Beauty! is not only a term you’ll hear yelled at an Australian sporting event that involves an oval-shaped ball, but is also the name of a four-piece band based in Sydney, who take their ockerisms and wear them on their sleeve. In 2014, they released their ‘pub-rock opera’ titled Jersey Flegg, which tells the tale of love and loss during the 1998 NRL season. Fast-forward to late 2015 and You Beauty have shifted their focus of love to online adventures on their second album ‘Illywacka’, which came out through Rice Is Nice Records. Recorded live at the Volumes Festival, Oxford Art Factory, Sydney, on the 29th of August 2015. Recorded & mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 23rd of October 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
Ultra Material: In 2012, Ultra Material was born from two couples who had shared stages with their respective husband-wife Brisbane bands, Matt & Sarah Deasy from ‘Do The Robot’ and Nick Skepper & Zuzana Kovar from "Sunshine State." The two duos combined their instruments and started to make their own blend of dreamgaze with swirling key lines, effected guitar delays and soaring vocals backed by breakbeat-esque rhythms. In the last year, they’ve released a self-titled EP cassette and their debut album ‘Double Date’ on Sydney’s Blackwire Records label, which has had tastemakers salivating for more. Recorded live at The Triffid in Brisbane on the 22nd of June, 2016. Recorded & mixed by Branko Cosic. Big White: When you mash together the sounds of The Cure, The Go-Betweens, The Velvet Underground and The Triffids, you get Sydney’s Big White, who weave all of those influences into their own strain of jangle pop. Within the span of two years, they’ve packed their sounds into a suitcase and travelled to the US and Europe, playing to swelling crowds, all while they were still writing songs for their first album, Teenage Dreams, which was eventually released in April 2016 on Caroline Records in Australia and Burger Records in the US. Recorded live at the Oxford Art Factory as part of the Volumes 2015 Festival on the 29th of August, 2015. Recorded & mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan. Mastered by Andrew Edgson. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 14th August 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
Mere Women: Starting off in 2011, Mere Women create a dark, and dreamy style of tunes best described as post punk goth pop. Wasting no time in sharing their gloomy tunes with the world they have released two full albums with the legendary label Poison City Records, the latter of which was recorded in an ill lit moderately repurposed cold storage unit that helps truly capture the vibe they are dishing out. Recorded live at Brighton Up Bar in Sydney as part of the Volumes Festival on the 29th August 2015. Recorded & mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan. Blank Realm: Made up of three siblings and a spiritual brother, Blank Realm have been kicking around since 2008. Starting off as an improvised noise group, the band have truly refined their sound over their 8-year life span into a careful concoction of erratic noise and unforgettable hooks. Much like their albums, their live shows have a continually growing reputation for being utter chaos and strangely mesmerizing at the same time. Unafraid to throw in a curve ball and hit a few strange notes, Blank Realm will always keep you guessing. Recorded live at Oxford Art Factory in Sydney as part of the Volumes Festival on the 29th of August 2015. Recorded & mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 5th June 2016. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
Super Best Friends: Super Best Friends are a trio from Canberra known for their mix of gritty punk songs with memorable hooks and strong political themes. Super Best Friends came to the attention of the masses in 2013 with the release of their single ‘Round and Round’, which featured cameo appearances from most of parliament house including Kevin Rudd, Tony Abbot, and Clive Palmer. Their debut album ‘Status Updates’ was released in early 2015 on Gun Fever Records and features songs about friends, social media addiction and the state of Australian politics. Their live shows perfectly demonstrate their level of energy and rage that makes these songs all the more powerful. Recorded by Harvey O’Sullivan and Hugh Fasher Mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan Mastered by Andrew Edgson Recorded at Newtown Social Club, Sydney, 2nd of May, 2015. Weak Boys: Weak boys are a group of 30 something year olds who like to sing about your everyday life and the problems we all face like landlords, hangovers, and running out of wine. Their members Matt Banham, Craig Lyons, and Chris Yates have all played in other memorable bands over the years including Dollar Bar, No Through Road, and Little Lovers, which make them a super group of sorts. Their songs are a flawless mixture of bright jangly guitar pop, with subtle glum undertones that feel like the soundtrack to a Sunday afternoon after a big weekend. Recorded and Mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan Mastered by Andrew Edgson Recorded at Oxford Art Factory, Sydney, 30th of January, 2015. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 2nd October 2015. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.
