My Journey of Strength and Purpose Over the years, weightlifting has become more than just physical training — it's a source of mental and emotional resilience. As I continue this journey, I'm reminded that strength isn't just built in the gym, it comes from overcoming challenges, learning from failure, and pushing forward with purpose. I'm especially grateful for my sons. They've been a constant source of inspiration, courage, and love. They remind me why staying strong every day matters. Thankful for Freedom and Service Living in the United States reminds me daily of the freedoms we too often take for granted. I owe a deep debt of gratitude to our military personnel, veterans, and first responders. These are the brave men and women who keep our communities safe and uphold the values we hold dear. As someone who has served and continues to advocate for veterans, I will always be thankful for their dedication and sacrifice. Our conversation dove into Russia's imperial ambitions, the human cost of the invasion, and why U.S. support continues to be essential, not just militarily but also morally and culturally. He reminded me that the fight for Ukraine is also a fight for democracy, sovereignty, and human dignity values that unite veterans and patriots everywhere. Preserving Ukrainian Culture in the U.S. Beyond his military and academic background, Vlad is the founder of the Ukrainian Cultural Initiative, a nonprofit that promotes Ukrainian art, music, and cultural awareness across the United States. Through his organization, he's building bridges between Ukrainians and Americans by showcasing the beauty, creativity, and resilience of his people. Vlad emphasized that supporting Ukraine isn't just about the battlefield; it's about preserving a culture that refuses to be silenced. How We Can Support Ukraine As Vlad shared, there are many ways to make an impact — whether through advocacy, awareness, or humanitarian aid. In 2009, Mason Symons was on his way to the Armory to report to duty with the PA Army National Guard when he had a motorcycle accident and broke his neck. After that, he would discover the sport of wheelchair rugby. He loves the team aspect and camaraderie that comes with playing the game. He played for Team USA at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, earning a silver medal. He also plays locally with the Oscar Mike team and like to keep other veterans on the move.

It's the third New England OCR Expo that has been put on and it is easily the most involved Mike has been!  In 2020 we were just vendors with a table, last year Mike helped with getting athletes to show up and give short talks.  This year Mike was on the board, attended biweekly meetings for months, and worked to help get more vendors and sponsors out to the event! Oscar Mike Radio was founded by Marine Veteran Travis Partington when he was personally going through a very rough patch in life. He was also struggling to make sense of why the suicide rate among his fellow Veterans was so high. He created the podcast to give Veterans the opportunity to share their stories as a way of healing and communicating that they ARE special. Travis has some prior experience in the radio business. However, as he was thinking about how he could best support his fellow Veterans he just so happened to attend a media day event at the local community college. One of the breakout sessions featured a company talking about podcasting. Travis' reaction was “I'm in! How do I do this?” “Pod Fade” is a phrase used to describe the tendency among most podcasters to gradually reduce or immediately stop producing content. Of the estimated 2 million podcasts in the US in2021, only 720,000 have published ten or more episodes. The average "fade" comes at the 4-7 episodes mark. Oscar Mike is now approaching 400 published podcasts. Travis and I speak briefly about the logistics and dedication required to produce a good podcast. One of his most straight forward pieces of advice is to understand the “why” of your podcast.  One's purpose had to be fully aligned with their authenticity. “If you do nothing else you must be consistent with your uploads.” Most of his guests come from word of mouth. Travis says he focuses on guests that he can learn from or whom add value to the Veteran conversation. Oscar Mike Radio was a finalist in the 2021 Veteran Podcast awards and was recently featured in a Veterans Administration blog about Veteran podcasts. Noah Currier is a Marine Corps Veteran and the founder and creator of Oscar Mike, a charity and clothing brand that stands for "On the Move." Noah's story of tragedy and triumph is one of the most heart wrenching yet inspirational stories I've covered on this podcast. Three days after coming back from a deployment, Noah was in a car accident that left him paralyzed. Three months after that tragic event, his fiance was killed in another car accident.  Noah was left broken in body and spirit, and he almost ended it, but chose not to because of his mother. As he recovered, he created the idea for Oscar Mike, a charity that helps wounded veterans to stay active.
