A year after the first Bond book, Casino Royale, was published it was adapted as part of the American TV show 'Climax!'. The episode aired in 1954, and has become a bit of an oddity for the Bond franchise. It's one of the few episodes of Climax! that hasn't become lost media, is only available in black and white and shows us an American version of Bond. Casino Royale is too much for one James Bond! Back in 1955, before Dr. No, the film rights to Casino Royale were sold to film producer Gregory Ratoff. This was the start of a long and messy history for the rights to Casino Royale, but it did result in a film adaption being released in 1967. Rather than being a traditional Bond film, it was an ensemble comedy with big names like Peter Sellers, Orson Welles and David Niven.
