Trent Kusters chats with Hakan Abrak, CEO & Co-Owner of IO Interactive. Hakan is also the Game Director on IOI's take on the Bond legacy with 007 First Light. Together they discuss how IOI met with MGM and the Ian Fleming estate to first pitch the project; the responsibilities they felt to stay true to the Bond IP; balancing dialogue and humor and how that differs from film to games; the casting process of finding a new Bond; and what they learned from the Hitman series that informed the design of a 007 experience. We're more than a week removed from the controversial decision to scrap new physical releases for PlayStation hardware beginning in early 2028, and even with a robust outpouring of rage from a portion of its hardcore audience, Sony doesn't seem like it's going to budge. This has come to surprise some people; yet, the longer Sony continues its silence on the topic, the more unlikely it'll be that anything will change. Will the Japanese megacorporation's wait-and-see approach pay off? Is there still time to turn the ship around? Are physical buyers vastly overestimating their power and positioning? There's much more to discuss surrounding the worst period of PR for the PlayStation brand since 2011. Other news this week includes furor over language in the European PSN's terms of service, drama surrounding Marvel Tokon's release on Steam, significant layoffs at Xbox that deeply affect PlayStation-aligned developers like id and Obsidian, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is it weird that Sony executives sold more than $10 million in stock after their infamous physical games announcement? What's going on with EA's insane monetization policies in College Football 27? Why couldn't Bluepoint spin-out from Sony like Microsoft is allowing some of its teams to do? Does Dustin have similarly arcane powers as Brad, just pointed in the opposite direction? We react to the Instagram comments about Ciaran's comments on last week's episode, discuss the Xbox layoffs and talk about AC: Black Flag. SHOW DOT POINTS Dylan returns after a two-week break, sparking banter. The gaming industry is facing more negative news. Social media reactions to Kieran's comments are intense. Consumers are upset about corporate control in gaming. Companies prioritise profit over consumer interests. The gaming industry struggles with sustainability and layoffs. Physical media is becoming obsolete in gaming. Video game conservation is a growing concern. Consumer behaviour affects game sales and studio viability. The transition to digital media is inevitable and controversial. Limited-run physical editions may not work for games. Gamers often justify their digital purchases with physical purchases. Microtransactions have been a part of gaming for years. Single-player games with microtransactions shouldn't affect others. Xbox's restructuring reflects a broader industry trend. Layoffs are painful but sometimes necessary for survival. The gaming industry may see fewer AAA titles in the future. The quality of games may decline as budgets increase. IO Interactive is refocusing on core titles after losing funding. The Black Flag remake offers a fresh experience for new players. YOUR HOSTS

In today's Daily Fix:In an interview with Bloomberg, Xbox boss Asha Sharma has admitted Game Pass was in a period of decline when she took over for former head Phil Spencer. But now they seemed to have stopped the bleeding, after dropping the price of the service and removing Call of Duty as a Day One title. Still, Xbox has admitted that the previous strategy of pumping money and resources into Game Pass has not paid off, and are now in the process of offloading some of the studios they've acquired to boost the service's value. In other news, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag - Resynced has already sold more in pre-orders than Ubisoft's other pirate game, Skull and Bones, has sold in its lifetime. And finally, IO Interactive has closed one of its studios—despite having a hit with 007: First Light—after Xbox funding for an upcoming game was pulled.

On this week's episode, Nathan and Riley are joined by Wes Fenlon of PC Gamer to discuss his new project: Warp Point, a web 1.0-style webring of video game blogs for the modern era. We discuss how the current internet is dying while a new one struggles to be born and whether or not newer generations will take to a format with which most millennials are intimately acquainted. Does that even matter, though, or is a fixation on numbers and scale one of the main reasons the modern internet turned out so rancid in the first place? Then we move on to the news of the week: Xbox layoffs haven't even happened yet, but they're already causing turmoil for companies like Hitman and 007 First Light maker IO Interactive, and—on the other side of our rapidly escalating industry collapse—Sony announced that it's phasing out physical discs entirely, a quake that will surely be followed by countless ripples. The landscape of corporate gaming faces severe disruption as Microsoft shifts away from its decade-long strategy of aggressive acquisitions. Newly appointed Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma has warned internal staff of a necessary "reset" following declining margins, forcing beloved studios like Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Compulsion Games into tense negotiations to spin off independently and escape outright closure. Meanwhile, independent powerhouse IO Interactive is celebrating a spectacular commercial triumph with 007 First Light shifting 2.7 million units in its debut week alongside a praised commitment to a year of free content. On the strategy front, British studio Frontier Developments has quietly confirmed a new entry in its acclaimed management simulation portfolio, immediately triggering frantic community speculation regarding its next thematic setting. In cross-media triumphs, Nintendo and Illumination's The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has officially crossed the momentous $1 billion milestone at the global box office. To close out the briefing, the team shares their personal picks of the week—spanning the maritime economic tabletop game Container to the high-octane racing of MF Ghost—supplemented by active discussions within the BlueSky community. #gameburst

This week on The Inner Gamer, we tackle a massive crossroad for the entire video game industry. We lead off with an in-depth review of 007 First Light, breaking down how IO Interactive successfully stepped away from their classic Hitman sandbox formula to deliver a tight, narrative-driven James Bond origin story that balances high-octane spy craft with incredible narrative momentum. Then, we are joined by a special guest to brave the waters of Windrose, the breakout Early Access pirate survival RPG, exploring whether its phenomenal "Soulslite" ground combat makes up for its arcade naval physics and the distinct lack of a solo pause feature. In our main segment, the crew splits down the middle in a fierce debate over Bungie's historic announcement to freeze development on Destiny 2 following the Monument of Triumph patch. Is cutting off a ten-year-old game a necessary, pragmatic evolution to focus all hands on Marathon, or is abandoning a premier multi-billion dollar franchise a critical corporate error under Sony's roof? Finally, we sift through the massive firehose of announcements from the Xbox Showcase, State of Play, and Summer Game Fest. We take around 15 of the biggest upcoming titles—including Marvel's Wolverine, Control Resonant, Halo: Campaign Evolved, and Gears of War: E-Day—and map them into a master thematic blueprint so you can cut through the marketing noise and find your next definitive gaming obsession before GTA 6 arrives to alter the landscape. The most wonderful and/or tedious time of the year has come once more: It's Not-E3 2026, when all of the video game giants share their biggest announcements for the year. As always, we're here to recap it, with thoughts on Sony's State of Play, the Summer Game Fest, and the Xbox Showcase, across which we saw the unveiling of God of War Laufey, the sooner-than-expected Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the long-awaited reveal of Persona 6 and more gameplay of Persona 4 Revival, and much more, including Xbox's completely incoherent exclusivity ‘strategy.' We also find some time to quickly review Saros, the new PS5 exclusive from Housemarque, and talk about 007 First Light from Hitman developers IO Interactive. A very silly Monthly Ten rounds out the episode, in which Jonathan pitches 10 Star Wars projects for Disney to announce and then quickly abandon.   Enjoy!
