Book Vs. Movie: Evil Under the SunThe Agatha Christie Novel Vs the 1982 FilmAgatha Christie's Evil Under the Sun (1941) is a masterclass in misdirection and suspense. The 1982 film adaptation, directed by Guy Hamilton and featuring Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot, transforms the story into a glamorous whodunit set in a sun-soaked Mediterranean locale.  Both versions center around the murder of actress Arlena Stuart at a resort, with Poirot reluctantly drawn into the investigation, uncovering secrets among the guests, each with a motive. While the book is set on a secluded Devon island during World War II, featuring a more introspective tone, the film opts for colorful costumes and picturesque settings, filmed in Mallorca. Poirot in the book is sharp and formal, while Ustinov's portrayal is warmer and more humorous, appealing to some fans for its charm and theatricality.Between the original novel and the film — did we prefer one over the other?

On Episode 127 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, Skye and returning guest host, acclaimed film poster artist, Tony Stella, continue their annual coverage of the long running James Bond series of films with 1964's Goldfinger. Directed by Guy Hamilton, Goldfinger is the third film in the series and is based on the seventh James Bond book by author Ian Fleming. This time Bond is tasked by the Bank of England and Mi6 to investigate gold magnate Auric Goldfinger, who they suspect is building up a vast inventory of gold by nefarious means. Sean Connery's third outing as the British super spy is regarded by many as the pinnacle of the franchise, now the longest running in film history, and features a superb cast including Gert Fröbe as the titular villain as well as Honor Blackman and Shirley Eaton as two of the most memorable Bond girls. The word iconic is often overused in the realm of film criticism, but Goldfinger is filled with moments and situations that truly earn that description. So join the guys as they give their usual passionate, in-depth analysis of the film for its 60th anniversary.

James Cameron-Wilson says the box office is up 44% thanks to #1 Joker: Folie à Deux, with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. Essentially a jukebox musical contemplating the human condition, it sadly lacks a narrative drive and is often downright boring. At #10, A Different Man is an accomplished and original drama which is moving, challenging and entertaining. Never sure where it's going, it's remarkable and highly recommended. Out on excellently restored home discs is the 1954 JB Priestley An Inspector Calls with Alastair Sim, directed by future Bond director Guy Hamilton. Despite its age, it still casts quite a spell. Sixty years, this might have very well been released as THE first franchise blockbuster.  It was the third entry in the James Bond franchise (adapted from a series of best-selling spy novels authored by Ian Fleming) which had been rapidly growing in popularity around the world.  Helmed by then up-and-coming British director Guy Hamilton, it featured the return of James Bond, Agent 007 of the British Secret Service, once again played by the late great Sir Sean Connery.  This time around, he's on a unique mission mostly set within the United States, trying to investigate and eventually take down a plot by the titular Auric Goldfinger (Gert Frobe) to potentially take control of the worldwide gold market....and it just gets crazier from there with henchmen named Odd Job, mysterious women named Pussy Galore, and a spanking new Aston Martin DB5 featuring lots of cool new gadgets. :) Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins is based on The Destroyer series of pulp novels. Clearly inspired by James Bond, the character takes an American spin on the cloak and dagger antics of black ops. Unlike Agent 007, though, Remo Williams—at least in his big screen incarnation—is not the most compelling character. And by modern sensibilities, it doesn't help that his trainer—an elderly Korean marital arts master named Chiun—is an assemblage of racist tropes. Oh, lest I forget, he's played by a white actor in bad makeup. Cue the wide eyes emoji. Thus, despite being helmed by 60s/70s Bond staple Guy Hamilton, Remo Williams fails to capture the charm of those cinematic escapades. And on a budget of $40 million—which was quite high for 1985—it grossed just $14.4 million. Cinematic universes are not born with those type of receipts. Now, sit back, toast to your new identity with a Backyard Explorer IPA from Pizza Port Brewing Co., and remember to breathe!

GREGORY GALLOWAY chats to Paul Burke about his new novel JUST THIEVES, identity, fatalism and existential questions in the noir novel, Chandler, Cain and Get Carter.JUST THIEVES: Rick and Frank are recovering addicts and accomplished house thieves whose partnership extends beyond their professional lives. They do not steal randomly they steal according to order, hired by a mysterious handler. The jobs run routinely until they're tasked with taking a seemingly worthless trophy: an object that generates interest and obsession out of proportion to its apparent value. Just as the robbery is completed, the two are involved in a freak car accident that sets off a chain of events and Frank disappears with the trophy. As Rick tries to find Frank, he is forced to confront his past, upending both his livelihood and his sense of reality. The narrative builds steadily into a powerful and shocking climax. Revelling in its con-artistry and double-crosses, Just Thieves is a nail-biting, noir-ish exploration of the working lives of two unforgettable crooks and the hidden forces that rule and ruin their lives. GREGORY GALLOWAY is the author of the novels The 39 Deaths of Adam Strand and the Alex Award-winning As Simple As Snow. His short stories have appeared in the Rush Hour and Taking Aim anthologies. “The Chinese Have A Saying; Before Setting Out For Revenge, You First Dig Two Graves.”  This is where we will start our journey into the 1980's with our favorite 00.  After 1981's ‘For Your Eyes Only' it would mark a full ten years since Sean Connery left the iconic character and over the course of 4 years and three films EON Productions made close to $600 Million dollars (give or take) with Roger Moore at the helm.  Never in movie history had an actor stepped in so gracefully to redefine the undefinable and make it his own.  Gone were the days of Guy Hamilton, Terry Young, Lewis Gilbert, and Ken Adam.  In were the days of John Glen, Peter Lamont, and Michael G. Wilson.  Over the years many will draw a line from this film through the decades to Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan (who would make an appearance on set), and eventually Daniel Craig.  Did you know that despite Roger Moore's epic run through the 1970's his return as 007 in ‘For Your Eyes Only' would be in doubt?  Did you also know that Cubby Broccoli would use this film as the ultimate opportunity to settle a legal score and to once and for all flush an iconic character down the drain or down the smokestack?  Alright, keep your hair on!  Because It's Time, To Sit Back And Relax Mom & Dad Won't Be Back For At Least An Hour!  And Welcome To The Latch Key Kids Presents “Breaking Bond Part XIV: For Your Eyes Only”.

The Bickersons are back! And you know they can never be wack! And much like that reference, the movie is something no one has thought of since 1985! Ali no longer moves like a pregnant yak! Jordan gives his parents terror for breakfast, pressure for lunch, and aggravation for sleep!Remo Williams: No Really, This Is Only the Beginning stars Fred Ward, an embarrassingly yelllowfaced Joel Grey, The Brim, and Kate Mulgrew, and Jon forgot to mention features the bad guy from the classic MST movie The Sidehackers (AKA Five the Hard Way) in a bit part!

Now Playing: The James Bond Movie Retrospective Series

For Roger Moore's second Bond film every attempt was made to recapture the magic of Goldfinger. With the return of Goldfinger's director Guy Hamilton, another character carrying a golden pistol, and a plot full of twists and turns, it certainly seems like all the right ingredients were brought together. Add in classic Hammer horror icon Christopher Lee as a master assassin aided by diminutive aide Nick Nack, did this film live up to Bond's gold standard? Listen to Stuart, Arnie, and Brock to find out!
