Eleanor Roosevelt and the Campaign Climax Guest: David Pietrusza Book Title: Roosevelt Sweeps Nation: FDR's 1936 Landslide and the Triumph of the Liberal Ideal The 1936 campaign saw the emergence of Eleanor Roosevelt as a political star. While Republicans hid Landon's wife and some Democrats feared Eleanor was "too much" for the public, she became an indispensable asset on the campaign trail. She was particularly vital in securing the African-American vote in Northern cities. While the President refused to support an anti-lynching law for fear of alienating Southern Democrats, Eleanor campaigned for it, effectively allowing the administration to "cover the bases" separately. This outreach was crucial, as African-Americans were the hardest-hit demographic and relied heavily on New Deal relief programs. The campaign reached a fever pitch in October 1936. Despite early polls showing Landon leading, the momentum swung heavily toward Roosevelt by late summer. At a massive rally at Madison Square Garden on Halloween night, Rooseveltdelivered a speech that "would peel paint today," declaring of the "economic royalists" that "I welcome their hatred." The speech was a masterpiece of class warfare; observers noted that the violence and "naked demagoguery" of his delivery were even more powerful than the written words. This aggressive stance countered the Republican argument that the public was tired of the New Deal. Despite an unemployment rate still hovering at 13.9%, Roosevelt's ability to frame himself as the protector of the working class against oppressive wealthy interests solidified his lead heading into election day. Your Stupid Minds transitions seamlessly from Tammy and the T-Rex to the Roger Corman quickie dino picture Carnosaur, released mere weeks before Jurassic Park. This is the first in a double feature to answer the eternal question posed by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert: Carnosaur or Cop and a Half. Which is better? Dr. Jane Tiptree (Diane Ladd, yes, Laura Dern's mom) is an evil scientist who attempts to achieve the impossible dream we've all pondered from time to time: can a viral bioweapon developed from genetically modified chickens impregnate all women on the planet with dinosaur embryos in order to replace the human race? She puts her plan into action in the small town of Climax, Nevada. Everyone starts getting sick with a high fever, but it's only the women who give birth to dinosaurs (and die in the process). The dino puppets emerge and immediately begin murdering everyone, mostly local yokels such as "Slim" Friar (Clint Howard, yes, Bryce Dallas Howard's uncle) and a group of tree-hugging hippies protesting environmental destruction. Sheriff Fowler (Harrison Page) and "Doc" Smith (Raphael Sbarge) all try to solve the mystery. Meanwhile, the government swoops in hell-bent on containing the damage, so guys in haz-mat suits blast every infected person with M-16s. Can they find a cure? No. Even Tiptree puts her money where her mouth is and fatally delivers her own dino baby. Can they contain the virus? Also unclear, but I'm going to say no. But at least we get to see some fun dino puppets roaming around. And some locals kill a T-Rex with a forklift. So that's cool. As mentioned above, Siskel and Ebert had a passionate disagreement over Carnosaur. Siskel gave it a thumbs up while Ebert called it one of the worst of the year. Inversely, the next episode's movie, Cop and a Half, had the opposite result. This disagreement comes up repeatedly throughout their 1993 season.

Larry Fessenden’s The Last Winter (2006) BRRRRRR! It’s so cold outside! Wait, what? The thermometer reads 102? What’s the date? Ah, forget the date; this is a brain freeze for you because we decided to cool you off with some freezing cold horror films just in time for the summer heat wave! YES! Cold themes are the icy wet blanket that puts you at unease. Friend of the Podcast, Ian Parker joins the Scariest Things, as we put our parkas on for a discussion of some frozen horror treats. Enjoy! Think of this as mid-summer air conditioning by way of podcast. Granted, we considered this episode much earlier in the year, but with so many PHFF interviews, it got pushed further into the summer months! So, let this discussion help cool you with shivers down your spine! Themes of isolation, where the environment itself adds to the danger of just being outside, never mind the killer or monster waiting for you out there. It’s that extra addition that makes just getting around in a horror movie difficult. Almost every variant of horror is represented with the overlay of freezing temperatures. Serial Killer / Psychopath? Check. Vampires? Multiple times. Zombies? Uh huh. Aliens and monsters? Plenty of them. It’s freezing PLUS scary antagonist. Frozen horror is often a melancholy affair. With the exception of perhaps Werewolves Within, these movies tend to be quite serious. The colors are desaturated and high contrast. The music is often spare, with hints of wind blowing in the background. The other partner of ice-cold horror is darkness. Many times the location will be in fringe or polar latitudes, limiting the amount of daylight. Characters subjected to freezing to death are different than those burning up in the desert. This is still a constitution check, though It’s less about exhaustion and more about willpower. That, and there might be a vampire waiting for you. They seem to be OK with freezing temperatures. Also, if you are making this a theme within your movie, you will want to have plenty of the activity outside. There are films that use bad weather to limit the locations (Think Pontypool (2008) or Climax (2018)). For this episode, we want the characters to endure the cold. Get out there! Don’t be a sissy! Just keep moving. That’ll keep you warm. We're back after a thrilling and dramatic inaugural Round of 32 at the World Cup! We were going to lead off the pod with Germany, but then Cabo Verde happened (again). What a story and what a performance (again) from the Blue Sharks, who took Messi and the defending champions to the very brink in Miami, and in the process, provided one of the greatest World Cup games of the century. We spend some time heaping love on their performance, from the heroic individual performances to the brilliance of Bubista's tactics to their undying belief and stamina. What a moment, what a team. Next, we move on to tournament disappointments, including Germany, The Netherlands, and Senegal. First, we wonder what should Germany's identity be moving forward and why couldn't Nagelsmann get it right with this group. Then we tackle Koeman's catastrophe versus Morocco, where he seemed to sabotage his own team's chances for success, before asking what went wrong for a Senegal group that was fully in control with ten minutes to play against Belgium. Elsewhere, all six pre-tournament favorites advanced, but only France and Spain comfortably. England were pushed to the brink by a terrific DR Congo, with Harry Kane coming up huge again. Is this a sign of trouble for the Three Lions or were Congo just awesome? Brazil also need a late winner to send Japan home, but a promising second half performance has us wondering if we're foolishly doubting Carlo once again. Portugal, too, were up against it, with some questionable VAR interventions salvaging Ramos' stoppage time go-ahead. We debate if Croatia were unfairly treated, how they bossed the second half, and whether this version of Portugal has any chance against Spain. We also officially welcome Morocco and Norway into our Official Contenders circle. Congrats to all involved. All 3 hosts have advanced, so we look ahead to each's chances to reach the quarterfinals. The U.S. is, like, better than Belgium right? Can Mexico really knock out England in the Azteca? And can Canada hang with Morocco? After a decade behind the bench in Calgary, he headed overseas to coach in Japan before returning to Alberta in 2002 to lead the Medicine Hat Tigers, quickly establishing the club as one of the WHL's premier programs. Desjardins later joined the Dallas Stars organization as an assistant coach and went on to guide their AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars, to a Calder Cup championship. From 2014 to 2017, he served as Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks and also spent the 2018-19 season behind the bench of the Los Angeles Kings. She also talked about how her daughter Harper is launching a skincare brand because she says that like her daughter used all of these like different skin cares and ruined her skin, and she wanted to create a really nice collection of like clean skin care for young girls to use, like sure, And I was like sure. Jenny Hahn, who wrote the book and is also a big writer of the movie and the show, she also posted when people come to set, film and share videos, it disrupts the work and makes it harder for actors to get into character and causes unnecessary anxiety for them. 08:57Speaker 1 We often have to stop. 08:58Speaker 2 Production to clear crowds from the show, which breaks the crew's focus. Nice, just be nice. 10:03Speaker 2 But then I remembered when they were filming the series finale of the last season of the summer I turned pretty where Belly goes to Paris, and a lot of it was filmed in Paris. They had to fly Gavin over also who played Jeremiah, even though Jeremiah had no scenes in Paris, because everyone was just so intense and guessing who she would choose, Conrad or Jeremiah. And then around the same time, they were putting out Statesmen saying please stop bullying our cast. 10:29Speaker 1 They're not their characters. 10:31Speaker 2 So they've really been through a lot with their fan base. But it's the same exactly what you said. I feel like if I was like walking around the US or in Europe and I saw that they were filming close to me, I wouldn't want to go. 10:45Speaker 1 Of course, I would want to have a look see. Of course I would take a couple of picks. 10:48Speaker 3 I don't know if I would necessarily share them on social media because that's just not my bag. 10:52Speaker 1 But I would show my friends. Like obviously there are people that are going, oh my god, I want to see them up close. Let's plan a trip, and like, you know that is happening. I know that happened a bit on the set of people we meet on vacation. 11:14Speaker 1 Yeah, but the. 11:15Speaker 3 Interactions were actually all really lovely and all the reports were fine, and there wasn't kind of a messaging sent out that I'm aware of that was like, don't do this. 11:23Speaker 1 But you know, fandoms are why a. 11:26Speaker 3 Lot of these projects get off the ground in the first place, especially if they're you know, they're based on a book or whatever, so they come with an inbuilt fan base, and so with that comes like this experience. 11:38Speaker 2 And I do think it's changed a lot as technology has changed. Very true to it, Jenny Hahn said, in her statement that it really disrupts the cast and the crew. Like imagine thinking you're filming a show and now you have like a live studio audience who're just like reacting to everything. Plus with the fans filming stuff and posting it online, it just creates like this bigger, bigger thing where was before It used to be like, oh my god, I was in the background of parks and recreation, did you see me? 12:06Speaker 3 I think, like, I find it frustrating when there's too many clips shared on my like for you page. For you that's it where you're like, I don't want to see it, and it's like, oh, like the way I was tapping interested on stuff when The Devil Wears Prata, like stuff was all coming. 12:22Speaker 2 That literally happened to me when I watched the second movie because I watched it in cinemas after you guys went to the big premiere and I was seeing scenes that I'd already seen on my TikTok. It's annoying, right because everyone was just filming them, yeah. 12:34Speaker 1 Filming the way, walking on the streets and everything. 12:36Speaker 3 But then it's also funny as well because we saw so many stills and footage from that film of Anne Hathaway and Patrick Brammel on the Street. It was so gorgeous and so romantic, and then like that was totally missing from the film. So that's a funny experience as well, because we've all been primed and it's almost like part of the promo. And that's actually really interesting because some productions, yeah, are like if you can't beat them, join them, and they're using it as an opportunity for promo. So we've seen that a lot with like they've been filming and they've wrapped filming now on Sunrise on the Reaping, which is like the next installment of the Hunger Games franchise. It's like the cast were encouraged to show stuff on their own like social media, like let's do it first. Yeah, yeah, so they're like McKenna grace was like all over it, and you know, she's so great on social media anyway. But we got a lot of behind the scenes stuff from that production and the movie doesn't come out till November, but they like really leaned into it and like knew that they had this really really really passionate fan base and so they were like feeding people from the start. 13:41Speaker 1 That's really smart. 13:42Speaker 2 I have a feeling Marvel kind of did the same for the New Spider Man movie because Tom Holland does a lot of his own stunts where they got like fans filming him, like jumping over cars and stuff in New York, and they were sharing those own videos on their own socials. It also really interesting, like can work way that kind of helps the production company or give them ideas. Do you remember when the first stills of It Ends with Us came out? Oh, and we were seeing lively in like those costs, like the most horrendous wardrobe choices, the most mirandous wardrobe choices. 14:19Speaker 3 And then it was just like mass trolling of like this she wearing? 14:25Speaker 1 What is this? 14:25Speaker 2 And then we still saw some quiet questionable efforts in that movie, but like the ones that we saw on des Moir were like not in the movie at all, very similarly love story. What they had as like the dress for Carolyne Bassett, the first. 14:39Speaker 3 First glimpse at both of them, both of them, it was like, that's not how they looked like they were wearing like h and M pieces like it just it wasn't reflective. 14:48Speaker 1 And that's so important, particularly for that story. 14:50Speaker 3 Because they're like, firstly, yeah, he had a lot of money, he dressed really well. He was like stylish and gorgeous and you know, but she was known FIRS style. That was a trademark, so to miss that and even like it was right down to the hair, like that's not what Carolyn's hair looked like, and then they started to change. So that's really yeah, that's been really beneficial for them. I've noticed as well. The next series of AHS has been like teasing so much from behind the scenes they've been doing. So they've got the core cast of Coven back, which is really exciting because like in my be in many people's opinion, Coven was the best season three, right, it was season three, that's like the Witch season that was set in Your Orleans absolutely incredible and like the cast so so stellar. Rufus Nephew, better known as Climax Jim, was a cattle rustler, serial jail breaker, and possibly one of the most entertaining characters you'll ever come across in Old West history. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1876, he somehow ended up in Arizona as a teenager, riding for the infamous Hash Knife Cattle Company, where he earned his nickname after chewing through 12 pounds of Climax tobacco in under a month. What followed was a long and not particularly successful career of stealing cattle, getting caught, and escaping from just about every jail in the Arizona Territory. Whether it was tunneling through adobe walls with everything from a pocket knife to a spoon, to routinely slipping out of shackles, or even making a getaway in his birthday suit, Jim was nothing if not clever. In order to understand the Triumphal Entry properly, we need to grasp the fact that the Cleansing of the Temple was the culmination of that Triumphal Entry. It was all of a piece. Reading it with the flow of the story in mind, it should remind us of the conclusion of The Odyssey, where the entire build up is learning into the justice that Odysseus will bring to his house. Three shows a night, from sunrise to sunset. Hundreds of shows a year. The bond that they formed was life-changing for them all, but especially for Michael, whose greatest fear was being alone. And then Michael Hutchence had his life changed for a second time. He was sucker punched by a taxi driver in the street. That attack left him unable to smell or taste. It altered his moods.
