In this episode of Scene N Nerd, Will Polk is joined by his wife, Sharlini, for an in-depth, spoiler-filled discussion on the new film "Sinners." They dive into the film's rich themes, exploring the complexities of race, identity, and the cultural significance of music in the 1930s South. With a standout cast led by Michael B. Jordan, the film challenges traditional horror tropes by weaving a narrative that highlights the struggles of twin brothers returning to their hometown, only to confront an even greater evil. Will and Sharlini delve into the film's stunning visuals and costume design, crafted by the talented Ruth E. Carter, and how they transport viewers into the period. They also discuss the profound impact of music as a character in the film, illustrating how it connects the characters to their heritage and the larger narrative of community and belonging. The hosts reflect on the portrayal of vulnerability in male relationships, the importance of ancestral legacies, and the film's commentary on colonialism and cultural appropriation. As they dissect pivotal scenes, including the vibrant juke joint and the haunting climax, they emphasize the film's ability to blend horror with deeper societal issues. In this episode, Tracey and Kelsey discuss these three anonymous questions:1) I love my husband and I'm very attracted to him. But for some reason, I have to picture a scene from porn to reach orgasm with him. I'm very much in my head when having sex in general, and find myself thinking about a million things that aren't related to sex during it. How can I change this pattern of having to play these images to climax? Is it something you've heard of before?2) I have been seeing an amazing man for two years. He's chivalrous, loving, we have sex often, and it's good. But, he seems to be permanently horny and comments constantly about my bum and boobs and how much he loves my body. Then he gropes me and gets turned on. I don't want that attention when I'm doing the washing up or reading a book or watching telly. I've tried laughing it off or being flattered or just moving his hands away, but when I don't respond the way he wants, he gets moody. After much prodding on my part, he admitted he feels rejected and hurt when I don't react favorably to his advances. I love how attentive he is, but I feel stifled by it when I'm trying to have time by myself. How can I politely decline the attention without him feeling rejected and getting in another mood that lasts for days?3) My daughter is 12 years old and we've been pretty open with her about sex, body parts, and how things work. I grew up in a house where there was zero sex talk, which resulted in lots of sexual issues I had to deal with later in my life in a therapist's office. So, I'm determined to raise my daughter without the shame I was brought up with. When she hit puberty, I mentioned masturbation to her. I told her that this is a normal thing lots of women do and enjoy, and I mentioned that there is a spot on a women's body which feels intensely pleasurable. I told her we could talk about it more if she wanted, thinking this would probably be in a couple of years. But, a few days later she asked me to show her the spot and explain what to do to get pleasure. The question blindsided me. We were driving, so I told her we could talk about it later. She's forgotten about it momentarily, but now I'm at a loss of what to do. I want to be honest and open, but she's only 12! Is it too early to show/talk about that stuff? If not, what's the best way to go about it? Any advice will be much appreciated! To have Tracey and Kelsey discuss YOUR secret sex question, enter it anonymously at https://bit.ly/3C4AelUWant a copy of Tracey's book, Great Sex Starts at 50? In this psychological horror by Gaspar Noe, a French dance troupe successfully prepares for their upcoming dance competition, and parties with some sangria after. Little do they know, someone spiked the sangria, and the night turns into an upside down world of horror and debauchery. Maybe one of the most experimental A24 films, and certainly one of the most disturbing, the A24 Rocks crew debates if the experimentation in this movie actually led to a thrilling watch. This talk was given as part of AscenDANCE, Anarchopulcho conference 2025. Get the lifetime replay of the entire conference here: https://anarchapulco.com/ascendance/ Description: The ancient mystics held these truths to be self-evident: The world has only relative reality. The Ground of our Being is an Inconceivable Intelligence. We are all artifacts of the imagination of that One Infinite Self. It is the will of that all-powerful Mind that the world must be sacrificed—and a new Creation, inhabited by beings filled with love, harmony, joy, and wisdom then will be made manifest.
In the maybe, maybe not season finale the Strangers find themselves covering a movie so vile. So detestable. So outrageous! That they discuss it for almost an hour and a half! Yes, that's right. This week, they're covering Gaspar Noe's "Climax"!"Climax" is available to stream on Max and Hulu! When members of a dance troupe are lured to an empty school, drug-laced sangria causes their jubilant rehearsal to descend into a dark and explosive nightmare as they try to survive the night -- and find out who's responsible -- before it's too late.Follow all of our relevant links here: https://linktr.ee/satellite12
It's a brand new season and that means two brand new story theory principles to discuss! This time around, I'm studying the core event (aka a story's climax) and Melanie is studying progressive complications. The writers of THE BANK OF DAVE definitely poured some sugar on this genuinely sweet, feel-good movie. It's rock solid. As an added bonus, it also features Def Leppard (seriously!). Let me know if you literally stand up and dance at the end of this movie. I did! -V. Stanley Yelnats has a family curse, and the only way he can correct it is by driving to an old cottage in Ireland to dig holes and situate his trauma. The Hole in the Ground is a 2019 supernatural horror film that delves into the Irish folklore of changelings... and digging holes to build character. Does it also have to do with the hollow earth theory? Fairies living under the dirt? How can whole fairy communities live in an underground lair and keep the dirt out? Co-host Cole cannot fathom such a society. Written and directed by Lee Cronin, the A24 Rocks crew debates the horror technique of smashing your head into things. In the first "A24 vibe discussion" of our sixth season: we have on motion graphics designer, video editor, film historian, and fellow podcaster (of The Morally Offensive Podcast) Bill "Netherlands" Holland to talk about Robert Eggers' 2024 remake of cinema classic Nosferatu. The modern remake of Nosferatu stars Lily Rose-Depp, Bills Skarsgard, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson. It was released to critical acclaim but mixed audience reviews. Bill and the A24 rocks crew discuss why some people don't enjoy the film, including horror fans that are more into terror and gore, rather than gothic horror. We also discuss the performances of each actor, and the historical production and costume design in Nosferatu. Caution: movie spoilers. Alright, lover—this episode? It's giving deep, dirty, and delicious.
By the mid-70's the Beach Boys appeared to be a band that had been left behind. Sales had been only moderate for their previous albums, and the band was struggling to determine their direction musically. In the summer of 1973 the movie "American Graffiti" featured several Beach Boys songs, creating nostalgia for the earlier surfing music.Between the revived interest sparked by "American Graffiti" and the success of the Beatles "Red" and "Blue" compilation albums, the Beach Boys released a collection of hits from their early 60's catalogue called Endless Summer. This featured songs from their Capitol Records days, 1962-1965. It was a near-instant success reaching the top of the charts in the United States four months after its release, and becoming their second number 1 album on the US charts. After the success of Endless Summer, the Beach Boys would reposition themselves as an oldies act, continuing in this vein for many years. Brian Wilson would pen one further Beach Boys studio album in 1977 which would meet with meager sales. Afterwards the band would focus on their classics until seeing a resurgence in the late 80's generated from another popular film, Tom Cruise's "Cocktail" Wayne brings us this surfin' themed compilation for this week's podcast. Catch A WaveA true surfing song, this tune is about being on a surfboard, waiting for the right wave to come along. This song was originally released on the 1963 album "Surfer Girl," and a rewritten version was recorded by Jan and Dean as "Sidewalk Surfin."Little Deuce CoupeThis track is about a 1932-vintage Ford model 18 hot rod used in drag racing on the streets of California. "American Graffiti" had featured the deuce coupe prominently, along with the Beach Boys song. The lyrics were written by local radio DJ Roger Christian.Shut DownAnother song about drag racing, "shut down" means you are about to beat the person in the race. The phrase "tach it up" may have lost some meaning in the era of automatic transmission, but the tachometer would run high for a drag race. The song is told from the perspective of the driver of a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray in a race against a 1962 Dodge Dart.Fun, Fun, FunThe inspiration for this song was a story the Beach Boys heard during a radio interview. The station owner described his daughter "borrowing" his 1963 Thunderbird to go to a drive-in hamburger shop. The opening riffs were inspired by Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Uptown Saturday Night by Dobie Gray (from the motion picture “Uptown Saturday Night”)Sidney Poitier starred in and directed this action comedy which co-starred Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Richard Pryor, and Flip Wilson. STAFF PICKS:The Joker by the Steve Miller BandLynch leads off the staff picks with a well known song from Steve Miller. The names in the first line reference several of Miller's previous songs, as well as the made-up word "pompatus." It barely cracked the top 40 in the US, hitting 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. Miller borrowed some lyrics from the song "Lovey Dovey" when he talks about wanting to "shake your tree."The Air that I Breathe by the HolliesRob brings us a slow burning but iconic ballad that the Hollies covered. The original was from Albert Hammond, and previously covered by Phil Everly. The Hollies version was the most successful, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Alan Parsons was the engineer on this song.Hollywood Swinging by Kool & the GangBruce's staff pick is the first number 1 R&B Single from Kool & the Gang. It was a crossover hit as well, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rick Westfield is the keyboardist for it and sings lead. The song is a true story of the keyboardist wanting to become "a bad piano-playing man" with the group. Rock and Roll Heaven by The Righteous BrothersWayne's features an ode to the rock stars who had died at an early age. This song is another example of a song that was covered, and did better than the original. Climax performed this song in 1973 but did not chart, while the Righteous Brothers took it to the top 10 in the United States. Lyric would be added in the years to come as more rock stars passed. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Chameleon by Herbie HancockThis jazz funk instrumental track closes out the podcast for the week. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands.
