Sunday night, March 2 marked Hulu's first time airing the Oscars (or the Academy Awards) live. But its Academy Awards debut ended on a chaotic and frustratingly premature note. Hulu's livestream cut off in the final moments of the show—with two major award categories, best actress and best picture, still to be announced because of a scheduling system issue. Those viewing the awards ceremony on Hulu instead saw an error code message that stated the event was over. Viewer outrage, predictably, ensued online. Fans, including those throwing Oscar-viewing parties, eagerly awaited the final, pivotal moments of Hollywood's biggest night. Hulu viewers missed Mikey Madison and "Anora" winning the night's titles for both best actress and best picture in real-time. The Hulu stream also had a rough start, with a few users reporting issues logging on to the platform due to another technical problem. For some, that meant missing the show's musical intro performed by "Wicked" stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Disney, which has run Hulu since 2019, apologized to viewers. "Yesterday evening, we experienced technical and live stream issues on Hulu which impacted some Oscars viewers," the company wrote in a statement sent to The Associated Press on March 3. "We apologize for the experience." Disney added that a "full replay" of the event is now available on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+, the streamers' bundled offering. That replay includes the final moments of Sunday night's show. Hulu's foray into the Oscars arrives as more streaming platforms are betting big on live programming of prominent events—from a handful of awards shows and pop culture moments to major sports matchups like the Super Bowl. But some have gone smoother than others. And Hulu's stumble on March 2 was not the first among similar endeavors from today's biggest streaming platforms. By the mid-70's the Beach Boys appeared to be a band that had been left behind.  Sales had been only moderate for their previous albums, and the band was struggling to determine their direction musically.  In the summer of 1973 the movie "American Graffiti" featured several Beach Boys songs, creating nostalgia for the earlier surfing music.Between the revived interest sparked by "American Graffiti" and the success of the Beatles "Red" and "Blue" compilation albums, the Beach Boys released a collection of hits from their early 60's catalogue called Endless Summer.  This featured songs from their Capitol Records days, 1962-1965.  It was a near-instant success reaching the top of the charts in the United States four months after its release, and becoming their second number 1 album on the US charts.  After the success of Endless Summer, the Beach Boys would reposition themselves as an oldies act, continuing in this vein for many years.  Brian Wilson would pen one further Beach Boys studio album in 1977 which would meet with meager sales.  Afterwards the band would focus on their classics until seeing a resurgence in the late 80's generated from another popular film, Tom Cruise's "Cocktail" Wayne brings us this surfin' themed compilation for this week's podcast. Catch A WaveA true surfing song, this tune is about being on a surfboard, waiting for the right wave to come along.  This song was originally released on the 1963 album "Surfer Girl," and a rewritten version was recorded by Jan and Dean as "Sidewalk Surfin."Little Deuce CoupeThis track is about a 1932-vintage Ford model 18 hot rod used in drag racing on the streets of California.  "American Graffiti" had featured the deuce coupe prominently, along with the Beach Boys song.  The lyrics were written by local radio DJ Roger Christian.Shut DownAnother song about drag racing, "shut down" means you are about to beat the person in the race.  The phrase "tach it up" may have lost some meaning in the era of automatic transmission, but the tachometer would run high for a drag race.  The song is told from the perspective of the driver of a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray in a race against a 1962 Dodge Dart.Fun, Fun, FunThe inspiration for this song was a story the Beach Boys heard during a radio interview.  The station owner described his daughter "borrowing" his 1963 Thunderbird to go to a drive-in hamburger shop.  The opening riffs were inspired by Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode."   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Uptown Saturday Night by Dobie Gray (from the motion picture “Uptown Saturday Night”)Sidney Poitier starred in and directed this action comedy which co-starred Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Richard Pryor, and Flip Wilson. STAFF PICKS:The Joker by the Steve Miller BandLynch leads off the staff picks with a well known song from Steve Miller.  The names in the first line reference several of Miller's previous songs, as well as the made-up word "pompatus."  It barely cracked the top 40 in the US, hitting 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Miller borrowed some lyrics from the song "Lovey Dovey" when he talks about wanting to "shake your tree."The Air that I Breathe by the HolliesRob brings us a slow burning but iconic ballad that the Hollies covered.  The original was from Albert Hammond, and previously covered by Phil Everly.  The Hollies version was the most successful, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Alan Parsons was the engineer on this song.Hollywood Swinging by Kool & the GangBruce's staff pick is the first number 1 R&B Single from Kool & the Gang.  It was a crossover hit as well, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Rick Westfield is the keyboardist for it and sings lead.  The song is a true story of the keyboardist wanting to become "a bad piano-playing man" with the group. Rock and Roll Heaven by The Righteous BrothersWayne's features an ode to the rock stars who had died at an early age. Ya falta menos para que arranque la temporada 2025 de F1… ¡lo estoy deseando! Pero hablando con uno de vosotros sobre lo interesante que va a ser esta temporada me dijo algo que me dio que pensar: “Sí, muy interesante… pero hay cosas que no volveremos a ver nunca en F1”. Y se me ocurrió este vídeo. Motores de 4, 6, 8 y 12 cilindros. Empezamos fuerte: Nos vamos a la temporada 1982… En esa temporada muchos equipos seguían usando el motor Ford Cosworth DFV V8 de 3 litros atmosférico, por ejemplo, nada menos que Arrows, Ensign, Fittipaldi, la escudería no es piloto, Lotus, March, McLaren, Osella, Theodore, Tyrrel y Williams. Brabham utilizó el Cosworth V8 en los BT49 y el novedoso BMW 1.5 litros 4 cilindros turbo en su BT50. También era un 4 cilindros el motor Hart de la escudería Toleman. Ferrari había abandonado su 12 cilindros por un V6 Turbo, una configuración que llevaba usando Renault desde el principio. Y aunque Ferrari había abandonado sus motores de 12 cilindros aun seguían defendiendo esa configuración Alfa Romeo y los motores Matra que montaban los Ligier. F1 con tracción total. Sorprende que el Audi Quattro revolucionase el Mundo de los Rallyes en 1980… cuando ya hubo un F1 de tracción total en 1959, el Ferguson P99… ¡más de 20 años antes! Quizás la escasa potencia de los F1 de esa época fizo que no triunfase, pues este modelo lleva un motor Climax de 1,5 litros que apenas llegaba a los 200 CV. En una entrevista de 1997 cuando le preguntaron al Moss por su monoplaza favorito dijo que el Ferguson P99 y el periodista ni sabía que coche era. Hubo más intentos, como los BRM P67 de 1964, el McLaren M9A de 1969 o el espantoso Cosworth F1 4WD de 1969 que probó Jackie Stewart y le pareció horroroso. Hay un Lotus 4x4 del que luego hablaremos e incluso el genial Mauro Forghieri propuso a Ferrari que su 312 fuese 4x4. Pero en 1980 se prohibió el uso de tracción total. Aunque confieso que en el futuro sí sería posible que veamos F1 con tracción total al estilo de los prototipos de Le Mans, con propulsión trasera para el motor térmico y motores en las ruedas delanteras… F1 con ruedas carenadas. Nos hemos acostumbrado a ver a los monoplazas de F1 y a todos en general con las ruedas descubiertas… ¿el motivo? Porque los monoplazas nacieron como auténticos “cohetes” con ruedas y al principio la estrechez de las propias ruedas y la relativamente baja velocidad a la que rodaban los F1, no justificaba complicarse la vida para carenarlas… Pero eso cambio en el Gran Premio de Italia de 1955 cuando Mercedes-Benz se presenta con el monoplaza W196R denominado “Tipo Monza” o Streamliner. Y es que en el circuito de Monza, a veces nos olvidamos, el peralte dejó de utilizarse en 1969. Si ahora es rapidísimo… antes lo era mucho más. F1 con 6 ruedas. Te invito a que veas el vídeo titulado “Fórmulas 1 de 6 ruedas… o más”. Porque los hubo ¡hasta de 8! Pero no volverás a ver monoplazas de F1 más más de 4 ruedas, porque el reglamento los prohibió en 1983… y dudo que en eso cambien. Prueba a hacer esta pregunta a un aficionado: “¿Qué monoplaza de 6 ruedas conoces?”, ojo al matiz, monoplaza y no F1, no el 90 por ciento más bien el 99,9 por ciento te responderán que el Tyrrel P34 de 6 ruedas. Más tarde, en 1948 en Indianápolis pudimos ver al Pat Clancy Special que era un más “Normal” Kurtis Kraft Offenhauser KK500G al que le habían instalado otro eje más, conectado con un simple árbol de transmisión extra. Por supuesto, tenía tracción a las cuatro ruedas… a las cuatro ruedas posteriores. F1 con motor de turbina. Otra cosa que no volverás a ver, coches como el Lotus 56B 4WD de 1971 con una turbina de aviación como motor y tracción total. Esto lo contamos en el video titulado “F1 raros, inventos que no funcionaron”. Y es que si ha habido alguien con capacidad de innovar y arriesgar en la F1 ese ha sido Colin Chapman. Lo que no hemos contado. Estas son alternativas técnicas que no volverás a ver en la F1. Pero tampoco volverás a ver que un piloto gane una carrera con un coche diseñado y construido por él, que un piloto llegue incluso a vencer un Campeonato del Mundo de F1 con su propio coche, o que un piloto gane una carrera con el coche de su compañero o que pilotos del Mundial de Motociclismo participen con éxito en el Mundial de F1…

We take a trip to Vienna to see what Boris Karloff looks like in color! Or is that colour? Troy and I discuss THE CLIMAX (1944), Universal's attempt to craft a follow-up to their 1943 hit remake of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. They took a 1909 stage play, grafted on some Phantom elements and used the same sets from the previous year's film to create a beautiful looking final product. They even carried over some of the cast in similar roles. But did they make a good movie? We dig into the things we like and dislike about this often overlooked entry in the horror films of the 1940's. Both of us marvel at the opulent sets while being impressed by Susanna Foster's singing talents while wondering about the movie's running time. We examine some of our favorite cast members including Gale Sondergaard and Thomas Gomez. The multiple audiences that the film was trying to appeal to comes under scrutiny as we lament the fact that the horror portion of the mix seems to get little attention. Sometimes striving for broad appeal results in a work that pleases no one. As the episode goes on we give voice to our many questions about the story's details that require an almost supernatural suspension of disbelief. Je sais bien que je vous ai laissés sur votre faim lundi. Effectivement, j'ai rencontré le journaliste Nabil Wakim qui tient le podcast Chaleur humaine. La podcasteuse rencontre le podcasteur.  Tout a commencé parce que le 14 décembre 2024, Micaela et moi étions au Festival des idées Chaleur humaine qui se tenait au Théâtre de la Ville. Nous avions réservé nos places depuis bien un mois et nous étions impatientes de découvrir les invités du Festival. Le Festival avait pour thèmes des solutions pratiques pour lutter contre le changement climatique.  La présentation annonçait des solutions réalistes et joyeuses et c'était vrai. Je vous laisserai les découvrir en ligne. Nous avons aussi adoré les intermèdes qui ont ponctué ce festival de trois heures : des dessins réalisés sous nos yeux grâce à un écran par l'aquarelliste Morgane Guerry, de la musique et des sketches hilarants et très beaux de la compagnie Zygomatic issus de leur spectacle Climax.  À la fin, dans la mezzanine qui surplombe le hall du théâtre, nous avons pu échanger quelques mots avec Nabil Wakim. Micaela lui a parlé de sa formation et moi je lui ai demandé s'il interviendrait sur les ondes de One Thing In A French Day pour montrer comment nous abordions ces sujets en France.  — Bien sûr, m'a-t-il répondu.  Et voilà.
