Character misdirection does more than set up clever betrayals. By using False Allies and False Enemies, writers can deepen conflict, complicate character arcs, and create plot twists that feel both surprising and inevitable. In this video, I explore four variations of character misdirection: the False Ally, the False Enemy, the False Ally turned True Ally, and the False Enemy turned True Enemy. We'll examine how the gap between characters' apparent and actual allegiances can challenge protagonists' assumptions, develop the thematic conflict, and change the direction of the plot. Others hide them from themselves. The most convincing downward transformations rarely begin with characters consciously deciding to become villains. They begin with self-deception as characters rationalizing their choices in order to take one seemingly defensible step after another until they have become someone they never intended to be. In this 70-minute class, I explore the Disillusionment, Fall, and Corruption Arcs as three distinct expressions of a larger negative-transformation pattern. We'll examine characters' changing relationships with the thematic Truth and Lie, the Disillusionment pivot, and the structural progression from the Hook through the Climax and Resolution. With Jo on holiday, Chris and Alex open with a quick recap of chapter 7. The law was good but powerless, sin was pervasive, and the chapter ended with Paul's cry: who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ. They then read verses 1–11. They unpack "no condemnation" as both a verdict and a penalty. The cross deals with the believer's forensic status, but it also deals with sin's power and its wages of death. They note how the chapter brings the Holy Spirit to centre stage, and how Paul contrasts "the law of the Spirit of life" with "the law of sin and death". For the Trinitarian nerds, verses 3–4 show all three persons at work. Chris points out that the Greek peri hamartias ("for sin") carries the language of the Septuagint's sin offering. Christ both fulfils the law's standard and becomes the offering for those who can't meet it. They also hear echoes of Ezekiel's returning Spirit and Jeremiah's law written on the heart. And, as promised to Jo, the new Exodus gets a mention.Verses 12–17 move the metaphor from slavery to family. Chris suggests adoption is less a picture than the underlying reality of the relationship, with both obligations and blessings. Alex brings in the prodigal son and his older brother: our identity rests in the Father, and our obligations flow out of that identity rather than earning it. The pair explore adoption in first-century Jewish and Roman settings, where an adoptee took on a new father's name, status and inheritance (hence the outrageous number of men called Gaius Julius Caesar). They discuss how best to render "Abba": not "Daddy", but something closer to an Australian "Dad", both reverent and intimate. They close the section on verse 17's condition that heirs suffer with Christ in order to be glorified with him.Verses 18–27 zoom out to the cosmic scale. Paul's "present sufferings" carry real weight coming from a former persecutor who now suffers for the faith. Alex pushes back on a narrow "where do I go when I die?" view of salvation. Paul's vision is a whole creation set free from its bondage to decay, reversing the effects of Genesis 3. Chris draws on being present for his wife's two labours to unpack the childbirth imagery: real anguish, with anticipation and new life on the other side. The Spirit becomes the bridge between the now and the not yet, interceding with groans too deep for words, a striking contrast to the helplessness of chapter 7. Both hosts firmly reject the idea that suffering is a sign that blessing has failed.The final section, verses 28–39, is a dense run of famous verses. "All things work together for good" is read against Genesis 50 and the Joseph story, where the good God brings may land generations later, and where the personal good is conformity to Christ rather than material blessing. On the "golden chain" of foreknew, predestined, called, justified and glorified, Chris and Alex outline several readings. They include whether foreknowledge and predestination should be merged or kept distinct, and whether "calling" is an invitation or a summons. Chris also notes the link between kaleō and ekklēsia. Both argue the chain is mainly about sanctification and family likeness to Christ, read corporately more than individually. The past-tense "glorified" speaks of a future so certain it can be described as done. Alex notes that every link in the chain is an act of God rather than a human response. Then come Paul's rhetorical questions, the quotation from Psalm 44 and the rare word hupernikōmen, "more than conquerors" (or in Chris's words, "uber victorious", not to be confused with the delivery app). The episode ends on Paul's sweeping list of things that cannot separate us from God's love, which Alex offers as the pastoral takeaway. After a short break, Jo, Chris and Alex are back for episode eight of the To Rome with Love series, and they open with a quick recap of chapters 1 to 6: the universal problem of sin, Israel's share in it despite having the law, faith as the way into right standing, the Adam and Christ contrast, and baptism as union with Christ's death and resurrection. They point out that chapter 7 has Paul coming back to something he raised briefly in chapter 5 and then left alone: the law's arrival made sin increase. They also flag that chapters 7 and 8 really belong together, and that verses 5 and 6 work almost as headings for the rest of chapter 7 and for chapter 8.Verses 1 to 6 start with the "which law?" question. One reading separates "works of the law" (the covenant markers like circumcision and purity) from "the law" as the whole Mosaic framework, ethical commands included. Another follows N.T. Wright's language of solidarities, where the law is a sphere you take part in, much like being "in Adam" or "in Christ", and Paul gives it an almost personal force. The marriage illustration gets unpacked against first-century practice, where only the husband could start a divorce, so a wife was bound until death. The team push back on reading every detail of the analogy as code. Is the husband sin and death, Christ, or the Adam life? The metaphor is probably doing several jobs at once, and the main point is that death releases you legitimately into a new covenant. Fruitfulness, the natural result of a marriage, becomes the image for what life with God produces, and the alternative is fruit for death. There's also a note of caution about sarx (flesh). Paul doesn't always mean "sinful nature" by it, and every translation choice is also an interpretation.The middle section (verses 7 to 12) takes on Paul's next mē genoito: is the law sin? The discussion separates "is the law sinful by nature?" from "does the law give sin an opening?" The law works as a diagnostic tool, holy and good in itself, and sin takes the opening it creates. The choice of "you shall not covet" is picked out as deliberate, because it's an entirely internal command and it follows naturally from the marriage illustration. There's a pastoral aside about how simply naming a sin from the pulpit can plant the idea. The team then wrestle with Schreiner's description of sin as an "alien power". Scripture personifies sin ("sin is crouching at your door") without making it Satan or a demon, and the team suggest sin works as much from inside us as from outside.That leads into the big question of who the "I" is. The options on the table are Paul himself (drawing on his own experience but not straight autobiography), Adam, Israel personified, or some mix that retells a universal story. They also cover the two readings most common in church life. The first is the pre-conversion reading linked to Origen and Augustine and later German scholarship. The second is the Christian's ongoing struggle, linked to the Lutheran and Reformation tradition. Philippians 3 ("as to righteousness under the law, blameless") is weighed against the chapter, and the team agree that being blameless before the law is not the same thing as being sinless.The final section (verses 13 to 25) covers the "I do not do what I want" passage. The problem isn't knowing what's right. It's approving of the right thing and still not being able to do it. The law is spiritual, but it provides no power to keep its own commands, and whatever you live under ends up filling you and showing in how you live. Paul switching between past and present tense is part of why the debate never settles. The team land on a representative reading with some personal element: this is "pre-Christ" more than "pre-Christian", Israel's story and Adam's story told in the first person, and they argue chapters 9 to 11 only make sense on that reading. It isn't only a Jewish experience either, because devotion to any moral code without transformation meets the same dead end. They close with Paul's use of classical rhetoric (logos, pathos and ethos). "There is nothing theorizable or interesting about death," Tom Krell says 30 minutes into his appearance on my podcast about death. He's speaking precisely. By "death," he means what he's learned of it from watching those close to him die. The annihilation of self. The finality of it. What he's not doing is dismissing the topic. Tom earned his PhD in philosophy, metaphysics specifically, so it makes sense he's intentional and unsparing with his words. But he also makes this beautiful music.Under the name How to Dress Well, his art-damaged R&B soundtracked my bike rides the summer before my coma in 2014. Since then, his music has grown deeper and more promiscuous. He incorporates metal, noise, and field recordings on tracks with lyrics about the hegemony of realism and intergenerational trauma. But it's all wrapped around a spine of primal, haunting melody. In our conversation, Tom tells me how important it is for him to use direct language to discuss philosophical ideas. And that is what he's doing with his music. He piles layers of sound and meaning onto melodies to bury the ideas and feelings deep. Eleanor Roosevelt and the Campaign Climax Guest: David Pietrusza Book Title: Roosevelt Sweeps Nation: FDR's 1936 Landslide and the Triumph of the Liberal Ideal The 1936 campaign saw the emergence of Eleanor Roosevelt as a political star. While Republicans hid Landon's wife and some Democrats feared Eleanor was "too much" for the public, she became an indispensable asset on the campaign trail. She was particularly vital in securing the African-American vote in Northern cities. While the President refused to support an anti-lynching law for fear of alienating Southern Democrats, Eleanor campaigned for it, effectively allowing the administration to "cover the bases" separately. This outreach was crucial, as African-Americans were the hardest-hit demographic and relied heavily on New Deal relief programs. The campaign reached a fever pitch in October 1936. Despite early polls showing Landon leading, the momentum swung heavily toward Roosevelt by late summer. At a massive rally at Madison Square Garden on Halloween night, Rooseveltdelivered a speech that "would peel paint today," declaring of the "economic royalists" that "I welcome their hatred." The speech was a masterpiece of class warfare; observers noted that the violence and "naked demagoguery" of his delivery were even more powerful than the written words. This aggressive stance countered the Republican argument that the public was tired of the New Deal. Despite an unemployment rate still hovering at 13.9%, Roosevelt's ability to frame himself as the protector of the working class against oppressive wealthy interests solidified his lead heading into election day. Your Stupid Minds transitions seamlessly from Tammy and the T-Rex to the Roger Corman quickie dino picture Carnosaur, released mere weeks before Jurassic Park. This is the first in a double feature to answer the eternal question posed by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert: Carnosaur or Cop and a Half. Which is better? Dr. Jane Tiptree (Diane Ladd, yes, Laura Dern's mom) is an evil scientist who attempts to achieve the impossible dream we've all pondered from time to time: can a viral bioweapon developed from genetically modified chickens impregnate all women on the planet with dinosaur embryos in order to replace the human race? She puts her plan into action in the small town of Climax, Nevada. Everyone starts getting sick with a high fever, but it's only the women who give birth to dinosaurs (and die in the process). The dino puppets emerge and immediately begin murdering everyone, mostly local yokels such as "Slim" Friar (Clint Howard, yes, Bryce Dallas Howard's uncle) and a group of tree-hugging hippies protesting environmental destruction. Sheriff Fowler (Harrison Page) and "Doc" Smith (Raphael Sbarge) all try to solve the mystery. Meanwhile, the government swoops in hell-bent on containing the damage, so guys in haz-mat suits blast every infected person with M-16s. Can they find a cure? No. Even Tiptree puts her money where her mouth is and fatally delivers her own dino baby. Can they contain the virus? Also unclear, but I'm going to say no. But at least we get to see some fun dino puppets roaming around. And some locals kill a T-Rex with a forklift. So that's cool. As mentioned above, Siskel and Ebert had a passionate disagreement over Carnosaur. Siskel gave it a thumbs up while Ebert called it one of the worst of the year. Inversely, the next episode's movie, Cop and a Half, had the opposite result. This disagreement comes up repeatedly throughout their 1993 season.

Ah, forget the date; this is a brain freeze for you because we decided to cool you off with some freezing cold horror films just in time for the summer heat wave! YES! Cold themes are the icy wet blanket that puts you at unease. Friend of the Podcast, Ian Parker joins the Scariest Things, as we put our parkas on for a discussion of some frozen horror treats. Enjoy! Think of this as mid-summer air conditioning by way of podcast. Granted, we considered this episode much earlier in the year, but with so many PHFF interviews, it got pushed further into the summer months! So, let this discussion help cool you with shivers down your spine! Themes of isolation, where the environment itself adds to the danger of just being outside, never mind the killer or monster waiting for you out there. It’s that extra addition that makes just getting around in a horror movie difficult. Almost every variant of horror is represented with the overlay of freezing temperatures. Serial Killer / Psychopath? Check. Vampires? Multiple times. Zombies? Uh huh. Aliens and monsters? Plenty of them. It’s freezing PLUS scary antagonist. Frozen horror is often a melancholy affair. With the exception of perhaps Werewolves Within, these movies tend to be quite serious. The colors are desaturated and high contrast. The music is often spare, with hints of wind blowing in the background. The other partner of ice-cold horror is darkness. Many times the location will be in fringe or polar latitudes, limiting the amount of daylight. Characters subjected to freezing to death are different than those burning up in the desert. This is still a constitution check, though It’s less about exhaustion and more about willpower. That, and there might be a vampire waiting for you. They seem to be OK with freezing temperatures. Also, if you are making this a theme within your movie, you will want to have plenty of the activity outside. There are films that use bad weather to limit the locations (Think Pontypool (2008) or Climax (2018)). For this episode, we want the characters to endure the cold. Get out there! Don’t be a sissy! Just keep moving. That’ll keep you warm.
