We also celebrate the creative forces that were Peter Weller, Michael Apted, Teri Garr, and Corey Haim, while wondering what happened to Christopher Collet, all of whom were great in this 1984 heightened family trauma drama. Martin Scorsese's new KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON and the 1950 Delmar Daves Western BROKEN ARROW are both films made by non-Native filmmakers seeking to confront stereotypes about Native Americans, but they are reflective of two distinct cultural moments separated by decades of change when it comes to representation in Hollywood storytelling. This week we spend some time wrestling with the characters, contradictions, and compartmentalization in FLOWER MOON before bringing BROKEN ARROW back in to see how attitudes have progressed when it comes to correcting the historical record and shaking viewers out of their assumptions, how the two films intersect and diverge in their depictions of white outsiders and cross-cultural marriages, and to what degree each embodies the limitations of Indigenous stories told from a non-Indigenous perspective. And for Your Next Picture Show we take a brief look at Michael Apted's 1992 Sundance sensation INCIDENT AT OGLALA, another film we considered for this pairing that takes a documentary approach to a different true-life story of crime and culture clash on a Native American reservation.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about BROKEN ARROW, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

My guest this week is Chris Solomon, a Physicist who worked at the University of Kent from 1995 until 2020. He specialized in the area of facial recognition and subsequently started a company called Vision Metric which has been his main focus. We talk about the interdisciplinary nature of research, and what he learned from studying Physics, and how it didn't directly affect the way he lived his life. Chris was a good footballer as a boy and was into mathematics. He was born on Hayling Island near Portsmouth and grew up around Brighton. We learn about his family background, including having a mother who had a TV career, presenting an afternoon show on Southern TV called House Party, and meeting Anita Roddick. We find out about his interest in Slade and T-Rex in the 1970s and how we consumed music in those days. We learn about Chris' interest in religion, too, and how he became a seeker. Direct experience is important for him.  Buddhism was his first interest, and we learn about Chris' fascination with the teaching of Gurdjieff and esoteric Christianity. Chris talks about why he didn't always talk about it with colleagues, and whether there should be an academic dimension to spiritual matters. We talk about the Michael Apted 7 Up Series where we see the patterns of our own lives unfold, and we learn about Chris' undergraduate experience of doing Physics at Durham and how he was disappointed with the lack of wonder he encountered. Then, at the end of the interview, Chris talks about how his memories are predominantly positive, and he relates an experience involving some rather difficult tenants which was lesson-learning. We also discover that his younger self imagined that he would end up being either a scientist or a builder.

Comedian, actor and writer Jake Noll joins to discuss the 1994 drama NELL starring Jodie Foster, Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson. Directed by Michael Apted, NELL tells the story of a young woman raised in an isolated North Carolina mountain cabin, making her first contact with the outside world after the death of her mother. NELL was released to a mixed critical reaction, but Jodie Foster received an Oscar nomination for her unique performance communicating only through an invented language (created by Foster herself.) So listen up, chickabees, as we spee all 'bout NELL, along with some diversions into Liam Neeson's accent work, dog reactions to movies, Spanking the Monkey, bad doctors, The Room, Room, Jodie Foster's Masterclass, tays in the winn, and much, much more!

One film project that has had a huge impact on me is the Up Series. The Up Series is an ongoing British series of documentary films that began in 1964 and followed 14 children from different socio-economic backgrounds in England. Every 7 years director Michael Apted meets up with the kids, who are now 64 years old, and talks about what has happened in their careers, mindsets, families and so on. The project packs an emotional wallop, and the longer it continues, the more compellingly humanist it becomes. The latest episode, 63Up, came out in 2019. I started to watch the series in my early teens and I'm now 35, so these individuals have accompanied me in some way for more than half my life. With all this in mind, you can imagine how happy I was when I got the chance to speak to Tony, the very charismatic London cabbie and former jockey, the “cheeky chappie” as he calls himself, who is one of the protagonists of the film series. We talk about his life, his priorities, and of course, we talk about the Up Series.
