On this episode of BSFS, we kick around a later sequel from the James Bond franchise, 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me. This one has it all, folks—gadgets, exotic locations, a top-tier evil lair, and several romantic encounters that DO NOT age well—but does that mean it makes for a good bar movie? Written by Christopher Wood and Richard Maibaum. Directed by Lewis Gilbert. Starring, Roger Moore, Barabra Bach, and Curt Jurgens. The Cocktail: (Vesper) 1oz Vodka 1oz Gin .25oz Dry vermouth

It took 98 episodes and double-oh-seven-and-a-half years for Jonny and Darin to talk about a James Bond film, but NostalgiaCast finally tackles everyone's favorite tuxedo-wearing, license-to-kill-bearing sex pest with THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, starring 007 as Roger Moore. Popcorn Digest co-hosts Gareth Green and Andrew Raphael lend their Bond expertise to an in-depth discussion of Moore's best(?) outing as the character, as well as their histories with / fondness for the franchise as a whole.   (PLEASE NOTE: Darin's audio file was corrupted during the recording and was salvaged as best as possible. So in the interest of preserving the conversation, the episode is presented as is. We apologize for any inconvenience to your eardrums.)

Where all other Bond end... this one begins! With The Spy Who Loved Me being a big hit, Lewis Gilbert was brought back for another big budget sequel. With the recent success of Star Wars, it was time to send 007 into space. Moonraker sees Bond investigate Hugo Drax, which results in him travelling to California, Venice, Rio, the Amazon before lifting off into space. It's one of the most divisive films in the franchise but that didn't stop Joe ranking it highly before the rewatch. Will Joe be proven right or is the force not so strong with this one? “Just like Lloyd Christmas in his dreams” The panel of peril valmorphanize their gondola into a very slim car, straighten their ties, cock their eyebrows suggestively, and then take in a viewing of this week's film Moonraker! Moonraker (1979), directed by Lewis Gilbert, find Roger Moore's James Bond locked in a game of wits with Hugo Drax (Michael Lonsdale) when a Moonraker space shuttle is stolen in very mysterious circumstances. With the iconic Jaws (Richard Kiel) in hot pursuit, Bond must unravel the mystery of the missing spacecraft and determine exactly what it is that Drax's scientists are doing with a lab full of orchids. Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFOOjYU16KE ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Naturally, there's a lot more to Drax's evil scheme than first meets the eye. He plans on taking those he deems humanity's best and brightest to his space station orbiting Earth. Why? To ride out the poisonous atmosphere that he intends to unleash upon the planet, only returning to terra firma when it is safe to do so and repopulate. Bond's got his work cut out for him this time – will he succeed in foiling Elon Musk Hugo Drax's plan? Did the panel enjoy this week's cinematic serving? Could they find a way to improve the villainous plan? And who will be named this week's most diabolical (person/podcast((er)))? I'm back from my Mediterranean cruise and want to share some stories. I visited the Greek Island of Mykonos in search of a location from The Bourne Identity.  The island of course is more famous for staging large parts of the film Shirley Valentine, hailed as one of the best British comedies of all time. Directed by the James Bond director Lewis Gilbert no less.  I do want to talk clothes as this is still a style based podcast and after 10 minutes of Mykonos talk I touch upon my new leather jacket and what a new leather jacket can do for one's confidence.  Don't forget to leave a review or get in touch through the blog:  https://fromtailorswithlove.co.uk/about

Featuring conversation with Timothy Revell from the Articulation initiative and A Level students from Dauntsey's School. 'Form Swallows Function' presented Baier as a ‘furniture artist' (a term the artist has used himself) and explored the relationships between geometry and function, making and concept. The artist was amongst the first furniture designers to recognise the potential of computers and digital rendering programs as tools to assist and advance the practice of three-dimensional design but has recently returned to early works in order to question our increasing reliance on digital technology.  We discuss and explore these ideas, as well as considering what makes furniture, managing sales and commissions as well as reviewing his own education journey. “The Chinese Have A Saying; Before Setting Out For Revenge, You First Dig Two Graves.”  This is where we will start our journey into the 1980's with our favorite 00.  After 1981's ‘For Your Eyes Only' it would mark a full ten years since Sean Connery left the iconic character and over the course of 4 years and three films EON Productions made close to $600 Million dollars (give or take) with Roger Moore at the helm.  Never in movie history had an actor stepped in so gracefully to redefine the undefinable and make it his own.  Gone were the days of Guy Hamilton, Terry Young, Lewis Gilbert, and Ken Adam.  In were the days of John Glen, Peter Lamont, and Michael G. Wilson.  Over the years many will draw a line from this film through the decades to Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan (who would make an appearance on set), and eventually Daniel Craig.  Did you know that despite Roger Moore's epic run through the 1970's his return as 007 in ‘For Your Eyes Only' would be in doubt?  Did you also know that Cubby Broccoli would use this film as the ultimate opportunity to settle a legal score and to once and for all flush an iconic character down the drain or down the smokestack?  Alright, keep your hair on!  Because It's Time, To Sit Back And Relax Mom & Dad Won't Be Back For At Least An Hour!  And Welcome To The Latch Key Kids Presents “Breaking Bond Part XIV: For Your Eyes Only”.

The Godfather changed the course of film history, its huge success helped to usher in a new generation of directors, the so-called Movie Brats, like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. But what if Francis Ford Coppola had never made the movie, which was a distinct possibility, as he was not the first film-maker to be approached by the studio. Originally they wanted Lewis Gilbert, the director of Alife, to helm the most American of crime sagas. From the archives, he reveals why this was an offer that he could resist. Nick Woollage is an award winning music producer, mixer and engineer. The Spy Who Loved Me - “Scrotal Imprint” Summary: Welcome to SPECTRE etc. This is the James Bond podcast where we discuss the ins and the outs of each film. In this Egyptian episode, we join Bond on his XXX-rated mission to retrieve microfilm from the Jaws of defeat. Ignore that floating Lotus - let us wet-bike you to Atlantis and beyond as we strive to find an original premise in The Spy Who Loved Me. * The pre-titles sequence introduces Agent XXX before we’re off to the Austrian Alps to watch Bond pull out. Some nice skiing stunts show us the strength that can be found in silence (no slide-whistles here!). Then we ignore Carly Simon’s sleepy song to focus once more on what those silhouettes are up to. * Some subs are missing, so Bond is brought in to chase up a lead in Egypt. Bond rides a camel across the desert before dismounting at a friend’s tent. Fear not though - more humps are in Bond’s future as some 70s sex-slavery convinces Bond to pitch his own tent for the night. * Bond’s visit to Cairo involves some unconvincing fighting on a rooftop and the obligatory Pyramids trip. Here we get to see Jaws kill a man who - apparently - was already completely drained of blood. * Microchip negotiations begin, but this is interrupted when Kolba is killed in phone booth. Bond and Anya join forces to follow Jaws - who kidnaps them and heads off into the desert. * Bond and Agent Anya are forced to work together to retrieve the microchip and escape Jaws. On the boat back to Cairo, Bond tries to get his leg over - but Anya honeypots herself out of harm’s way. She is sent right back into harm’s way when Russian M demands the agents officially work together to chase the next lead at Stromberg Laboratories. * For some reason, Bond and Anya catch a train from Egypt to Sardinia. This leaves them open to an ambush by Jaws - who is hiding in Anya’s closet! Despite the astounding hand:face ratio in the ensuing fight, Bond manages a shocking victory. * Bond and Anya pose as Marine Biologists to visit Stromberg. The brief (and seemingly pointless) meeting gives us our first real look at Atlantis, and then our Marine Biologists are abruptly sent back to the mainland. * A really exciting chase sequence builds from a motorcycle to a car to a helicopter, and climaxes with a submarine-Lotus. Elon Musk - if you are listening and would like to licence our “Float-us” idea, get in touch! * Once Bond and Anya actually infiltrate Atlantis, the film takes a turn for the worse by becoming little more than a drawn-out imitation of You Only Live Twice (huge vessel swallowing another vessel, control room behind the shutters, one army storming the lair of another army, evil plan is to start a war between two nations…). Come on, Lewis Gilbert - no wonder the Revenge of the Nerds protagonists were able to usurp your name! * With nameless nobodies dying all around him, Bond finds a copy of “Nuclear Subs for Dummies” and uses the easy-to-follow instructions to reprogram the launch coordinates for both submarines * Bond tracks down Stromberg for an anticlimactic showdown, before running into Jaws for the real final battle. Despite the odds being against him, Bond is rewarded for all those childhood years playing Skilltester at the arcade. * Once Jaws has eaten his daily intake of Omega-3 acids, we finish the film with Bond throwing out a quintessential “Double 0-ntendre”, followed by curtains and the most mind-boggling musical miscue imaginable. And of course, keep checking back for a link to our petition to expose and immortalize this film’s lazy rehashing of a previous Bond adventure by re-naming it “You Only Live Thrice”!
