Expanded two-disc sets of soundtracks for The Man With the Golden Gun and Moonraker are now on sale, La-La Land Records says.
Amid the chilling tension of the Cold War, Ian Fleming captured readers with his character James Bond, whose missions were based on his experiences with the elite and secretive 30 Assault Unit in WWII. 30AU was established in 1942 by British Naval Intelligence and was overseen by Fleming. Their role was to capture secret German documents, weapon blueprints, and communication codes from behind enemy lines. They often targeted command centres, labs, and bunkers to recover valuable information and technology before they could be destroyed by retreating Axis forces.Dan is joined on the podcast by historian Dave Roberts to uncover some of the true stories behind the plots of From Russia with Love, Moonraker and The Man With the Golden Gun, and the array of real commandos who inspired Fleming's Bond.Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal Patmore.Sign up to History Hit for hundreds of hours of original documentaries, with a new release every week and ad-free podcasts. Ask a Bond fanatic to name the worst of all the movies and you're bound to get at least ten answers. OK maybe six. But for most of young life, Golden Gun was generally considered to be among the biggest snoozers in the whole franchise. So I talked to Junkfood Cinema's Brian Salisbury about it. He loves these flicks. Thanks for listening to Overhated! There are 100+ more episodes at patreon.com/scottEweinberg. Subscribe to hear them all now! Has James Bond (Roger Moore) met his match in the charming, villainous and charmingly villainous Francisco Scaramanga (Christopher Lee)? As the world's best secret agent (that's Bond) and the world's most expensive assassin are pitted against one another, can 007 stop the world being held to ransom by the selling of Scaramanga's nefarious Solex solar power? Perish the thought. This year marks the 50th anniversary of The Man With The Golden Gun. The 1974 film has received a lot of flak over the decades.
Buckle up, because we're heading back to 1974 and diving into two cinematic sinkholes of desperation, debauchery, and… digging for dead bodies? For Episode 40, Brad's thrown Jake into the grimy, gambling purgatory of "The Gambler," while Jake's plunged Brad into the blood-soaked, tequila-fueled odyssey of "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia." First up, Brad's wrestled with James Caan's Axel Freed, a down on his luck teacher in pursuit of one last roll of the dice. Brace yourselves for existential despair, smoky backrooms, and enough high-stakes wagers to make you sweat through your earbuds. Meanwhile, Jake's been grappling with Sam Peckinpah's magnum opus of chaos, "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia." Warren Oates stars as Bennie, a hapless pianist dragged into a grotesque quest for a severed head and a hefty payday. Expect sun-baked highways and more moral ambiguity than a Tijuana back alley. Did Jake find solace in Caan's self-destructive symphony? Did Brad endure the psychedelic fever dream that is "Alfredo Garcia?" And will anyone emerge from this episode with their sanity intact? Tune in, but remember that when it comes to 1974, the only guarantee is that things are gonna get messy. So grab your whiskey, your existential dread, and your metaphorical shovels, because we're about to dig up some classic cinema dirt. Other movies discussed in this episode: Onionhead (1958), Ride a Crooked Trail (1958), Bonnie and Clyde (1967), The Wild Bunch (1969), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Duel (1971), Straw Dogs (1972), Badlands (1973), Charley Varrick (1973), The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Chinatown (1974), Blazing Saddles (1974), The Year Without Santa Claus (1974), The Front Page (1974), The Conversation (1974), Italianamerican (1974), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), Lenny (1974), Going in Style (1979), Thelma & Louise (1991), Last Action Hero (1993), The Straight Story (1999), The Road (2009), Django Unchained (2012), The Gambler (2014), Win It All (2017), Uncut Gems (2019), Self Reliance (2023). Listen as we praise the suave menace of Christopher Lee, pine for the lost Alice Cooper theme song we might have had, and encounter that most rare of circumstances: a James Bond film Agatha enjoyed!! Warning: Contains explicit language, spoilers, and intrusive slide whistles. Our theme song is "Nostalgia TV" by Edward Jonathan Blakeley through Lynne Publishing.
Head of Social Media, Emily Schmemily, joins the boys for a frank but loving discussion about one of the slower Bonds. Also, there's some Star Wars. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
A concert was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 28th and 29th, 1964 which would be released as a concert film called the T.A.M.I. Show. Free tickets were provided for local high school students to provide the audience. T.A.M.I. stands for either “Teenage Awards Music International” or “Teen Age Music International,” as both were used by the show's publicity team. The show included many of the top rock and roll and R&B musicians of the time, including the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, James Brown, Chuck Berry, and The Miracles. Jan and Dean were the emcees for the event. Motown Records was represented by three of its biggest acts in the Miracles, Marvin Gay, and the Supremes. The Rolling Stones were featured as the grand finale. However, the performance by James Brown and the Famous Flames is perhaps the highlight of the show, as it features his dance moves at the height of his career. Steve Binder and his personnel from The Steve Allen Show shot the film, and the legendary session musicians of The Wrecking Crew provided most of the instrumentation. The go-go dancers in the background were choreographed by David Winters and his assistant, a young Toni Basil. This is a difficult film to locate due to copyright disputes on the show over the years. You'll need to go to YouTube to find the performances.Wayne takes us through this concert footage of the early days of rock and roll. (Here They Come) from All Over the World by Jan and DeanThe film starts with a song from Jan and Dean which is played over the credits. Jan and Dean co-hosted the concert and contributed this anthem written for the show. It has a surfing vibe and is easily confused for The Beach Boys who also participated in the concert.Hey Little Bird by The BarbariansThe Barbarians were a precursor to the Punk movement, and their style was called garage rock in the day. The Barbarians had a one-handed drummer who utilized a drum stick in his left arm with a hook prosthetic. The group sported a pirate look with leather sandals, open necked shirts, and bloused sleeves.Out of Sight by James Brown and the Famous FlamesMany consider the highlight of the show to be James Brown's performance, as it showcases his dance moves. The energy shown by Brown and his backing singers clearly influenced future acts like Michael Jackson and Prince.Around and Around by The Rolling StonesWhile the Rolling Stones were the final act, Keith Richards claims that choosing to follow James Brown on stages was the worst decision of their careers, because no matter how well they performed, they couldn't top him. They performed a cover of Chuck Berry's song - an interesting choice since Berry was also a performer for the concert. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Do the Clam by Elvis Presley (from the motion picture “Girl Happy”)Elvis was making movies at the time, and would almost always be expected to sing songs in the picture. STAFF PICKS:Nowhere to Run by Martha & the VandellasBruce leads off the staff picks with a group which would see a name change to Martha Reeves & the Vandellas later on. This Motown hit written by the legendary team called Holland-Dozier-Holland went to number 8 on the US charts. The song is about a woman trapped in a downward spiraling love affair that she just can't give up.Land of 1000 Dances by Cannibal and the HeadhuntersRob features an iteration of a frequently covered song. Chris Kenner originally recorded it in 1962, but it was more successful as a cover by Cannibal & the Headhunters, going to number 30 on the Billboard chart. They also added the "na na na na na" hook to the original when front man Frankie Garcia forgot the lyrics. Sixteen dances are mentioned in the lyrics of the song.Eight Days a Week by The Beatles Lynch brings us an early hit penned by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. It would be the seventh number one single for the Fab Four in the United States, despite Lennon's feeling that it was a failed attempt at writing a single. The title is attributed to a statement Ringo Starr made regarding how busy the Beatles were at the time.Satisfied by Lulu and the LuvversWayne wraps up the staff picks with a high energy party song from a Scottish band. Lulu would go on to a successful solo career that included film songs like "To Sir With Love," and the title song for "The Man with the Golden Gun." Lulu was 17 at the time this song came out. She would go on to marry Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Cast Your Fate to the Wind by Sounds OrchestralThis week's podcast ends with an instrumental song

Dennis is joined via Zoom by filmmaker Sam Irvin. Sam is the author of the memoir I Was a Teenage Monster Hunter, which is about his childhood obsession with horror movies and the interviews he conducted with horror personalities for his fanzine Bizarre. Sam talks about his Cinema Paradiso-esque childhood; working at his family-owned movie theater, having to change the marquee when he was afraid of heights, getting to take home the posters after a film's run and cleaning up vomit after screenings of The Exorcist. He also talks about his creative and personal relationship with Cassandra Peterson AKA Elvira Mistress of the Dark. He recalls how he got the job directing Elvira's Haunted Hills, bonding over sad Joni Mitchell music and how just this year, he and Cassandra took a tour group of 30 Elvira super fans to visit the Haunted Hills locations in Romania and Transylvania. Sam also talks about being more in demand as a director at 67 than ever before. He's directed seven Hallmark and Lifetime films in the past 12 months, including this month's Love In Zion National: A National Park Romance and the holiday film Check Inn to Christmas. Other topics include: cold-calling his way into becoming Brian DePalma's assistant, Ian McKellan's naked prank on the set of Gods and Monsters, directing three seasons of the gay vampire series Dante's Cove and getting to visit the set of the James Bond film The Man With the Golden Gun when he was 18 and hearing sex stories from a drunk Herve Villechaize in the back of a Rolls Royce afterwards.
Being a podcaster now for over 600 episodes I've heard all sorts of stories on how people make it in the film business. From Sundance darlings to blind luck. Now today's guest story is easily one of the most incredible and entertaining origin stories I've ever heard. We have on the show today award-winning director, producer, and screenwriter, Sacha Gervasi. Sacha won the screenwriter lottery with his first-ever screenplay, which was a un-produceable short film script, caught the eye of the legendary Steven Spielberg. That script, My Dinner with Herve would eventually be expanded and released in 2018 by HBO. The film stars the incomparable, Peter Dinklage. Unlike most writers/directors who go on to produce their debut films, Gervasi's 1993 entry project wasn't made until just three years ago.I promise you, Sacha spills every detail of the fascinating story of his encounter with Hervé Villechaize, the famous little person from shows like Fantasy Island and films like James Bond's The Man with the Golden Gun. Hervé was arguably one of the most famous people in the world in the late '70s and early 80's. Sacha sat with Herve in a marathon interview, and the connection they forge during their brief, yet impactful meet.[presto_player id=154803]After his life-changing encounter with the Fantasy Island star, which followed Hervé's abrupt and unfortunate suicide, Sacha was determined to get his story told in its entirety and justifiably. He ditched his mid-level journalism job in England and moved to Los Angeles to attend film school at UCLA after developing the script for My Dinner with Herve. While on the climb-up, Sacha wrote screenplays for The Big Tease (1999) and The Terminal (2004) which was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Tom Hanks. The comedy-drama film grossed $219.4 million at the Box office with a $60 million budget and has become a holiday classic in the UK.Tom Hanks played an Eastern European tourist who unexpectedly finds himself stranded in JFK airport, and must take up temporary residence there because he is denied entry into the United States and at the same time is unable to return to his native country because of a military coup.In 2008, Sacha made his documentary directorial debut and executive produced Anvil! The Story of Anvil. The amazing documentary premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival about a heavy metal band that never gave up on their dreams of being a successful band. Anvil was established in 1978 and became one of the most influential yet commercially unsuccessful acts with thirteen albums. The documentary ranks at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. He also directed the 2012 film Hitchcock, a story about the relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and his wife, Alma Reville during the filming of Psycho (1969). It starred Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, and Scarlet Johansson. I also interviewed Sacha and an old friend of his, Iron Maiden heavy metal band singer, Bruce Dickinson on my new podcast, Next Level Soul that you have to catch up with if you are down for more knowledge bombs and cool stories from Sacha. That episode comes out on Saturday.
