James Cameron-Wilson says that yet again 6 films took £1m at the box office, with Mufasa replacing Nosferatu as #1. Racy drama Babygirl is #5, with Nicole Kidman amazing as a businesswoman whose perfect life is threatened by an affair. James found it almost too much, so real and voyeuristic did it feel. Jesse Eisenberg's A Real Pain at #6 has him and Kieran Culkin mismatched cousins tracing their European heritage. It's original, deftly realised, witty and well acted. Although perhaps aimed at younger viewers, Amazon's White Bird has Helen Mirren explaining her experiences under the Nazis to her grandson. Made by the great Marc Forster, it is poignant and touching and had James on the edge of tears at times. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In this new episode of Time on Screen, brought to you by Terra Ciele Mare, Zach Kazan welcomes Kyle Snarr to chat about World War Z, the Marc Forster directed 2013 star vehicle for Brad Pitt that has become a cable staple in the years since it landed in theaters. While there's a rich tradition of zombie films going back decades, World War Z offers something genuinely different, and feels more grounded in reality than many zombie movie classics, particularly following the pandemic. Zach and Kyle dig into why this movie endures, with a particular focus paid to Pitt's star power and several incredibly well executed action set pieces. They also look at the watch worn by Pitt in the film, a Terra Cielo Mare Orienteering PVD, and its contemporary successor, the Orienteering Quota 8611, inspired by the first Italian expedition to K2. Powered by a Swiss automatic Sellita SW200, the matte black Orienteering Quota 8611 measures 44mm in diameter and features an internal compass bezel. TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY is set in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska and follows the investigation behind the mysterious disappearance, and even more mysterious discovery, of eight men from a research station.  Leading the investigation are two law enforcement officers who share a troubled past, Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis). MATT "CHALKY" CHESSÉ, ACE Editor Matt Chessé, ACE often finds himself cutting with frequent collaborator, director Marc Forster.  The pair have been working together since 2000 and have joined forces on such films as; MONSTER'S BALL (2001), FINDING NEVERLAND (2004), THE KITE RUNNER (2007), QUANTUM OF SOLACE (2008) and CHRISTOPHER ROBIN (2018).  Matt also cut TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY star, Jodie Foster's film MONEY MONSTER (2016). MAGS ARNOLD Mags Arnold entered the film industry in 1993 as a trainee sound editor, crossing over to picture editing as second assistant editor in 1994. She was promoted to first assistant editor in 1995, working on films such as HIGH FIDELITY (2000) and CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN (2001), both under celebrated editor Mick Audsley. Following her work as an assistant, Mags has cut shows such as WITCHER (2023) and BIG LITTLE LIES (2019). BRENNA RANGOTT Brenna is the lone editor on "Night Country" who has past experience with showrunner Issa López, working on the series BRITTANIA (2019) together.  Despite her cheerful demeanor, Bren could often be found in the cutting rooms of horror genre projects like STARVE ACRE (2023), FATHER OF FLIES (2021) and HOST (2020). For a long-running franchise like the James Bond series, the release of Casino Royale in 2006 was just a shot in the arm - this was the first film starring Daniel Craig as Agent 007 and it was also THE first film in the history of this franchise to be a genuine reboot.  It received stellar reviews, made a ton of money, and was beloved by fans....it was also the first entry to end on a genuine cliffhanger.  The plan for the next film was to have an immediate follow-up for our lead character as that ending would directly lead into this next story from the first scene on.  So needless to say, expectations were QUITE high for this follow-up sequel released just about two years later....And while this movie did make as much money as its predecessor, the reviews were much worse and for the most part, fans were quite disappointed.  This came from a director (Marc Forster) who had never directed a big budget entertainment like this before and it also started filming without a finished script.....and since there was a writer's strike at the time, that script remained largely unfinished through production.  AND....this was a generally downbeat story also filmed in an admitted more claustrophobic style.  It just left a sour taste in the mouths of audiences which fortunately was forgotten four years later with the release of the beloved Skyfall. So now revisiting this sequel 15 years later, was it really that bad?  Well it featured a strong cast including Olga Kurylenko as the latest "Bond girl," Mathieu Amalric as the latest villain, and some returning cast from the previous film including Judi Dench, Giancarlo Giannini, and Jeffrey Wright.  So let's find out....if there was a quantum....of....solace? :Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Marc Forster went for an ambitious trip down a fantastical dramedy avenue when he brought us his 2006 feature, Stranger Than Fiction. Showing Will Ferrell in a more sincere role than he's typically known for, Stranger Than Fiction brings us into the world of the writer as God; toiling with their creations until somehow one becomes aware of their puppet strings and must find a reason behind them or risk seeing his early demise. This film has a great supporting cast, featuring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, and Queen Latifah and was received very well, although not bringing home a massive payday. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate poetic deaths and mundane existence as we try to determine if this flick should save Harold Crick or if we should kick the writer in the dick.
