Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today's episode takes a deep dive into power and tyranny as we explore the top 5 most notorious dictators in film—both real and fictional. We'll then transition to a gripping discussion on Beasts of No Nation, followed by a lighter segment exploring Tales of Africa, offering a rich tapestry of African folklore.Top 5 Dictators in Film:Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland" (2006) - Forest Whitaker gives a chilling portrayal of Idi Amin, the Ugandan dictator. His performance captures the charisma and volatility that characterized Amin's rule, earning Whitaker an Academy Award.Coriolanus Snow in "The Hunger Games" series - Donald Sutherland plays the cold and calculating President of Panem, a fictional dictator whose manipulative governance involves pitting district against district in deadly games.Adolf Hitler in "Downfall" (2004) - Bruno Ganz's portrayal of Hitler's final days in his Berlin bunker offers a humanizing yet horrifying glimpse into the psyche of one of history's most infamous dictators.Palpatine in the "Star Wars" series - Emperor Palpatine, a fictional dictator whose quest for control of the galaxy embodies the classic traits of tyranny and corruption, showing how power can absolutely corrupt.T'Challa in "Black Panther" (2018) - While not a dictator in the traditional sense, T'Challa's role as the king of Wakanda brings up interesting discussions on autocratic rule and benevolent dictatorship in a fictional, technologically advanced African nation.Beasts of No Nation is a harrowing look at child soldiers under the command of a warlord in an unnamed African country. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and based on the novel by Uzodinma Iweala, the film stars Idris Elba as the charismatic and brutal Commandant. This film does not shy away from the grim realities of war and its impact on children, making it a profound piece for discussing the consequences of unchecked power and the loss of innocence.Shifting gears to a more family-friendly topic, Tales of Africa is a delightful exploration of African myths and folklore. This segment introduces kids and their parents to a world of moral tales, animal fables, and legendary heroes, offering insights into the rich cultural heritage of Africa. It's an excellent way to educate children about the diversity of narratives and the importance of storytelling in different cultures.Whether you're intrigued by the portrayal of dictators on screen, looking to understand the complex issues presented in Beasts of No Nation, or eager to journey through African folklore, today's episode has something for every dad. So tune in as we explore the realms of power, tyranny, and tradition in another thought-provoking session of Bad Dads Film Review.

After that, Da Bois enter their discussion about Maniac starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stussy, with Enrique describing the show by saying "the destination was greater than the journey", Eli states his general distaste over everything but the finale, and Tristan, in an unsurprising turn of events, enjoyed the show to its fullest and loved most of it and rated it the highest amongst the crew. Next week, everyone returns to review the hit action movie IP Man as the cycle of new shows starts, as well as cover "The Last Of Us Episode 6"! Series Synopsis: "The Last of Us" is an American post-apocalyptic drama television series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO. Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series is set twenty years after a mass fungal infection sparked a global pandemic and follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States. The supporting cast features Gabriel Luna as Joel's younger brother Tommy and Anna Torv as Joel's smuggler partner Tess. Maniac is an American psychological black comedy-drama streaming television miniseries that premiered on Netflix on September 21, 2018, after being announced in 2016. Patrick Somerville created the series and Cary Joji Fukunaga directed, basing it very loosely on the 2015 Norwegian television series of the same name (starring co-creator Espen PA Lervaag) while drawing inspiration from many more famous films. The 10-episode series stars Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Justin Theroux, Sonoya Mizuno, Gabriel Byrne, and Sally Field. The plot follows two strangers who connect during a mind-bending pharmaceutical trial set in a retro-future New York City.

We review Cary Joji Fukunaga's new bond film "No Time To Die" and discuss what we loved and what we thought could be improved. (CONTAINS SPOILERS)
Questions for the Week:We've all heard the term "guilty pleasure," meaning you like something a cultural consensus says you shouldn't, like Nickelback. The older I get, the less I see the term in that definition, and the more I see it in terms of things I know are problematic, but I still enjoy them. James Bond movies and football leap to mind. The 007 franchise historically has been full of violence, misogyny, vice, and myriad other problematic elements. As the director of the latest Bond flick, Cary Joji Fukunaga, pointed out, Bond has committed sexual assault in some of the older films. But I can still succumb to the escapist action and stunning locations when "Casino Royale" or one of the other 007 classics comes on.In the same way, I thoroughly enjoy an afternoon or evening watching football, particularly if my Los Angeles Rams are playing, though I know the sport is rife with intersecting problems including violence, racism, exploitation, and other issues. Is it enough to be aware of the problems with guilty pleasures and keeping them in mind as you indulge, or do you need to purge them from your life? Do y'all have any guilty pleasures you contend with? There was a recent article about what the show Ted Lasso could the clergy. What do you think about this? Have you ever watched something and felt like it spoke to your work in the church or ministry? Why? What does this office do? Does the UN really listen to the church and the faith community? Resource Roundup:Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations Facebook Page

We cover a variety of genres and mediums — movies, TV shows, comics, anime, manga, audio dramas — picking out a specific piece of entertainment that we can cover in a week's time. Every episode, your intrepid co-hosts Kyle and Melissa dive into the media of the week (with a spoiler warning!), give recommendations, and take turns pitching the next topic. For one episode a month, we check in with continuing coverage on a longer title, like a full TV series or comics run, and follow it all the way to the end. Join us for fun discussions on a wild variety of entertainment you should know!Check out our other podcasts here, or wherever you get your podcasts. We kick off this week's episode with a discussion on another extremely popular Netflix Original...the ensemble-driven new film from Antonio Campos, THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME. Spiderman v Batman in an alternate uber-religious time capsule universe? Yeah, kinda. This leads into a revival of the FIVE GOOD QUESTIONS segment, in which Andy asks Noah about his experience with the Janelle Monae-led psychological thriller, ANTEBELLUM. Some strong opinions are on display. The double-barreled THROWBACK CHALLENGE makes its return as well! Noah made Andy watch the 2019 film from Pedro Almodóvar, PAIN AND GLORY, while Andy coincidentally also gave Noah a Spanish-language film -- Cary Joji Fukunaga's 2009 debut, SIN NOMBRE.
