In this episode of Drinks and a Movie, I'm diving into one of the most brutal and underrated entries in the 007 franchise: Licence to Kill. Timothy Dalton drops the charm and brings pure vengeance — but does it hold up today? Let's talk cartel villains, shark attacks, and why this Bond feels more like an ‘80s action flick than a spy thriller.

Our first Best Picture winner in this year's Oscar Month, The Last Emperor, went 9 for 9 at the awards that year. John Lone, Joan Chen and Peter O'Toole are all solid in the starring roles, but there's something fairly soulless and even a little opaque about this spectacular production...especially for a Bernardo Bertolucci film. Bertolucci and his team were the rare Western filmmakers to be allowed to shoot in The Forbidden City in China, as they told a story about a sheltered child surrounded by devious sycophants. Puyi might be a royal, but his comfortable life is spent in effectively a prison. The biggest problem we couldn't get past with this film, though, is that this was what the Oscars told us was the pinnacle of 1987 filmmaking, even though Broadcast News, Moonstruck, Robocop, Predator and Lethal Weapon were all out that year. So don't you dare try to leave the 575th edition of Have You Ever Seen---not until you get kicked out---as we marvel and moan in equal measure about The Last Emperor. Well, Actually: Maggie Han was born in Rhode Island, but her parents were South Korean. Also, Licence To Kill was released in 1989, not 1987. THE HILDEBRAND RARITY and LICENCE TO KILL Ian Fleming published the short story “The Hildebrand Rarity” in 1960.  In it, he created the character of Milton Krest.  James Bond movie fans will recognize Milton Krest from 1989 movie LICENCE TO KILL.   In this episode, Dan and Tom decode how this character from the short story landed in this movie.  They also talk about how his character from the novel changed in the movie. And how some of his traits were split between the characters Milton Krest and Franz Sanchez in the movie.  And what about Krest's wife?  Parts of her character morphed into Lupe. Remember that stingray tail that Franz Sanchez uses on Lupe in LICENCE TO KILL?   It had its origin in the novel as well. But it wasn't someone named Sanchez who used it. And of course, there is a Playboy tie-in here as well that we discuss. So, take a listen.  Have you read “The Hildebrand Rarity”?  If so, did Dan and Tom miss anything?  Let us know your thoughts, ideas for future episodes, and what you thought of this episode by dropping us a note at info@spymovienavigator.com.  The more we hear from you, the better the show will be! Following their triumph over Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League last Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain looked to climb the Ligue 1 ladder as a very poor Olympique de Marseille side paid a visit to the French capital. On this episode of PSG Talking, I'm joined by Ethan of PSG Fan Club Boise to discuss PSG's 4-0 win over Marseille. We break down Luis Enrique's starting lineup, breakout performances, Kylian Mbappé's injury, and look ahead to the next couple of matches on the fixture list.Up first, it's all about Le Classique. Luis Enrique went with an unconventional starting lineup, with three defenders and newcomer Bradley Barcola playing on the left flank behind Mbappé. We discuss the manager's flexibility, Barcola's performance, and how PSG's rebuilt defense is still learning to play together.PSG scored early and often against Marseille, with Achraf Hakimi kicking this off in the eighth minute with a brilliant free kick. We discuss his complete turnaround in recent weeks and how Manuel Ugarte's defensive prowess allows Hakimi to get forward and join the PSG attack.Mbappé won the free kick that led to Hakimi's goal, and while the Frenchman tried to continue, he eventually left the match in the first half with an ankle injury. We discuss the impact of the injury and whether Mbappé should feature against Clermont Foot before PSG travels to Newcastle United on October 4, for a big Champions League match. Finally, we discuss PSG's other two goalscorers, Randal Kolo Muani and Gonçalo Ramos. Both newcomers were on the verge of being classified as 007 (zero goals, zero assists in first seven matches), but Kolo Muani scored an opportunistic goal before halftime, and Ramos scored a difficult header in the second half and capped off an incredible counter move to wrap things up. We share our expectations for both attackers as the season progresses, and look ahead quickly to PSG's upcoming match against Newcastle. As always, thank you for listening, and be sure to subscribe and rate the show wherever you download your podcasts. THE JAMES BOND VEHICLES One of the vehicles we discuss is Goldfinger's plane.  This is a huge and fascinating restoration job.  Steve Targocz discusses this massive project. Another one was one of the Kenworth trucks from LICENCE TO KILL.  Colin Clark walks us through this one. These are two that they are still restoring so you wouldn't have seen them in a museum yet. But, we also saw some vehicles that have been restored that we saw.  Leonard Johnson discusses getting and restoring the fire engine from A VIEW TO A KILL. Colin Clark walks us through getting the plane Sanchez escapes in from LICENCE TO KILL and what shape it is in. Join Dan and Tom as they discover THE TRAITORS, a 1962 British B Spy Movie. Does it make the Grade? Low budget B movies were made, for the most part, to be the second billing on double features. Low-budget doesn't necessarily mean a bad movie. In this episode we dive into THE TRAITORS without giving away the movie. THE TRAITORS has a good cast starring Patrick Allen, James Maxwell, Jacqueline Ellis, and Zena Walker. We look at the high-level plot, what makes this a B movie, how espionage is portrayed, the music and more. For the most part, this is espionage! At Spy Movie Navigator, one of our goals is to identify Influences. Specifically, where a movie was influenced by or has influenced other spy movies and real life. THE TRAITORS has significantly influenced parts of THE FOURTH PROTOCOL, ALLIED, the the Harry Palmer Series, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, THUNDERBALL, LICENCE TO KILL and more. Take a listen to find out about these influences. THE TRAITORS is a fairly common name for movie titles and television shows, including the currently airing games show. So, to be clear, we're examining the 1962 movie here. So, join Dan and Tom for their THE TRAITORS - A British B Movie Makes the Grade episode. What was the very first draft of Timothy Dalton's unmade third film like? Timothy Dalton's third James Bond film is one of the great 'what ifs' of the series, and over the years various incarnations have come to light. Recently, we dusted off the first-ever draft of what could have been Dalton's follow-up to Licence To Kill. Dated July 7th, 1990, this rarely-seen script was penned by Michael G. Wilson and American writer Alfonse Ruggerio. Many of its elements would survive in later films for Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, but the locations and tech elements of this draft lend their own distinct flavour. Join us as we run through the story and discuss the characters, plot, killer robots, and ponder what this film could have been in the early 1990s.  For further coverage of Bond 17 (1990), check out this article on MI6: https://www.mi6-hq.com/sections/articles/bond17-1990 The recording took place on March 16th, 2023 in the USA and Spain.  James Page is a co-founder of MI6-HQ.com and the magazine MI6 Confidential David Leigh runs thejamesbonddossier.com Bill Koenig runs the Spy Command at hmssweblog.wordpress.com This podcast is copyright Pretitles LLC © 2023

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and directors and producers! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we talk about a true professional. An actor's actor. The great Benicio Del Toro! Conor and Dan are joined by filmmaker and returning guest Chadd Harbold, who produced the new, impressive film Linoleum, starring Jim Gaffigan and Rhea Seehorn, out in theaters now. The Benicio Del Toro B-Sides discussed are: The Funeral, Excess Baggage, The Hunted, and The Wolfman. Plenty more Del Toro films are referenced, including the masterful Things We Lost in the Fire. We discuss his perfect accent in The Usual Suspects, his deep love for The Wolf-Man, the elemental beauty of The Hunted, and all of the scene-stealing he did as a young actor in small parts.  There's discussion on how Chadd and his team filmed Linoleum safely (and successfully) in pre-vaccine COVID times, how impossibly good the late Chris Penn is in The Funeral, and his desire to work with great filmmakers. Oh, and here's that insane Benicio death scene from Licence To Kill. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. It's DIE HARD in a Bond movie! In this third episode, Phil and Liam don their tuxedos (but keep their mullets from the ROAD HOUSE episode) to discuss LICENCE TO KILL (1989), the controversial and divisive James Bond movie that marked Timothy Dalton's final appearance as the legendary secret agent. While placing the film in a wider context as part of the Bond canon, Phil and Liam discuss their personal connections tothis iconic character from their differing cultural perspectives (as a Brit and an American respectively), and examine how the cinematic trends of the time turned this 007 adventure into something wildly different from the Bond films that preceded it. This dark and violent picture is particularly notable in terms of ‘DIE HARD DNA' - as amongst other things, it features the return of DIE HARD actors Robert Davi and Grand L. Bush…aka FBI Special Agents Big Johnson and Little Johnson (no relation). LICENCE TO KILL trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARLFh3J0Iw8 At time of release, LICENCE TO KILL is streaming for free on Paramount +, and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. On October 14, 2016, Michael Hoolickin was murdered by a man he had never met. His killer, Tim Deakin had 55 previous offences. His last crime was to bite a man's ear off in a pub fight. Deakin was a high risk and prolific offender who had been freed early - "on Probation Service Licence" - to serve what was left of his sentence in the community. Deakin was later jailed for 27 years. At Michael's inquest, the family discovered Deakin had been stopped following a car chase just a few days earlier with no insurance and carrying drugs. The Coroner outlined serious failures by the people who were supposed to be monitoring Deakin that meant he stayed out of prison and remained free - on license - to kill. Along with the Hoolickin family, Radio 4 discover the true extent of crimes, many of them violent, committed by people who have been released on license, including where the advice was that they were still a danger to the public. At the heart of this are Michael's parents, Garry and Leslie, and the torment over their son's death. It's this that drives them to uncover and understand the reasons why his murderer wasn't in prison on that night. We follow them as they meet another mother and father still mourning their son after his life was taken in the same circumstances. Producer: Matt O'Donoghue
