Movie Reviews and Podcast
The Coming Off The Reels podcast is an exceptional podcast that provides a highly entertaining and insightful conversation about films. The dynamic energy and banter between the hosts, Drew and Roy, make for a wonderful listening experience while working on other tasks. They cover a wide range of topics, from new films to beloved classics, and their discussions are filled with great points and perspectives.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the conversational nature of the discussions. The hosts bring a lively and engaging approach to their conversations about movies, making it feel like you're sitting in on a fun discussion among friends. Their ability to break down films and provide unique perspectives adds depth to their reviews, making it enjoyable for both movie buffs and casual listeners.
Another great aspect of this podcast is the variety of topics covered. From discussing new releases to delving into classic movies, there's something for everyone in terms of film selection. Their blind watch episodes are particularly enjoyable, as they bring fresh perspectives and hilarious commentary on films like Dick Tracy.
While there are many positive aspects to this podcast, one area that could be improved upon is the occasional talking over each other. At times, it can be difficult to hear everything being said due to overlapping conversations. However, this minor flaw does not detract significantly from the overall quality of the podcast.
In conclusion, The Coming Off The Reels podcast is an outstanding choice for those who love conversational film podcasts. With entertaining discussions, great insights, and a genuine passion for movies, Drew and Roy create a delightful listening experience every Wednesday. Whether you're looking for recommendations or simply want to engage in dynamic film discourse, this podcast is definitely worth subscribing to.
Is there anything better than being really, truly surprised by a movie? Could I have imagined a world where Final Destination Bloodlines placed itself in the running for the “Best of 2025” list and also damn near made me cry along the way? No, but here we are. What a surprise. Enjoy!
We all know that Marvel has had kind of a tough time lately. All of their movies feel like carbon copies of better Marvel movies that came before. Thunderbolts* had the advantage of being full of characters that people don't really care about that much. Nothing to lose, everything to gain. Enjoy!
This is a movie that I cannot get out of my head. The way it was shot, the music, the acting, the message…absolutely amazing. I care more about you going to see this movie than I do you listening to this podcast, but if you also enjoyed Sinners, and want to listen to us gush about how much we liked it, we will be here. Enjoy!
The perfect double feature does exist…it just may not be these two movies. Or maybe it is these two movies. Yeah…this is probably as good as it gets. Enjoy!
No need to mince words, this is one of the worst movies we've seen in a long time. (please know that the “we” mentioned above does not reflect the views of Roy King, who “kinda liked” this movie)Enjoy!
It's March, the Oscars have come and gone, and people are already discussing what could be the best movie of 2025. We, on the other hand, are just now getting around to our “Worst of 2024” list. We are certainly more negative in this particular episode, but if you had to watch all these terrible movies, you would be negative too. Enjoy!
It is that time of year again, a season when we inevitably spend way too much time engaging in discussions about all the movies we loved from the year before. This year, however, we kind of felt like there weren't as many standout moments or experiences to love, perhaps just a handful of things to like. Even with that sentiment in mind, we still had an absolute blast getting extra long-winded in our conversations and reflections.Enjoy!
Happy Valentine's Day! Here is our episode on the new romantic comedy/slasher horror film, Heart Eyes. What can we say, we love “love” here at COtR, and we wanted to celebrate with something that fit the theme. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about the new comedy/thriller, Companion. Just in case you don't know what this movie is about, but still want to see it, we will not talk about any of the plot points in this post. But we did largely enjoy this movie, even if we don't care for all or one of the actors, and their very punchable face.Enjoy!
This week is a catchup episode. It has been awhile since we talked about things that are newish, so we are just covering as much as we can in an hour or so. Some things we liked, others not as much. As a little treat for you, we largely agreed this time, which is rare. So at least you don't have to hear us bicker too much. Enjoy!
It Is good thing we recorded all these episodes when we were the cabin, that way we have stuff to post when we are all trapped in our houses because of the snow. Hey, speaking of being trapped in a house, this week we are discussing the 2021 thriller, See For Me. It really feels like the perfect time of year to watch this kind of movie, and at a cool 93 minutes, you will still have plenty of time to do whatever else you do when the weather is bad. Enjoy!
Yes, it is that time of year again, where we watch a bunch of Hallmark and Hallmark adjacent Christmas movies, and ramble on about the implausibility each of them. Are they all good? No. Are some of them good? Depends on who you ask. Are some of them really terrible? Well, that also depends on which of us you ask, but yes, some of them are terrible. A don't worry, we definitely watched Hot Frosty. Enjoy!
This week is another episode from our trip to the woods, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. This movie, and the series off which is was based, has a lot of memories for a couple of us, so this episode not only talks about the movie, but what it means to us, and how it shaped much of our humor. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about the third entry in the Venom franchise, Venom: The Last Dance. Is Venom in this movie? Yes. Is there Dancing in the movie? Also yes. Is this the last one of these we will have to watch? For the love of god, we certainly hope so. So sit back and relax as we talk about why this movie is not very good. Enjoy!
Here is another episode from our cabin trip. This week we are discussing one of Ryan's favorite entries in what he believe is one of the stronger horror franchises, Child's Play 2. And in case you're wondering, this movie was infinitely better than White Chicks. Enjoy!
Another movie from this year's Cabin Chronicles. This time we are watching VHYes. It is hard to describe what this movie is, maybe a little bit Kentucky Fried Movie, but maybe also a little horror. Maybe it's not very good, but maybe it is actually okay. It is hard to put your finger on this one, so maybe it is worth watching, just so you can see, but maybe it's not. Enjoy!
This year we kicked off our cabin trip with the oft talked about, but never seen movie, White Chicks. It was exactly as bad as we feared it would be, but a deal is a deal, and since someone left us money on the nightstand, we were obligated to watch this comedy? Horror? Science Fiction? It is really hard to tell what kind of genre this fits into, since it is every bit as disturbing and upsetting as say a Requiem for a Dream, and it shares a same star. Neat. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about two film that help close out the summer of 24, Trap and Alien: Romulus. Many people will say that the best days of M. Night Shyamalan and the Aliens franchise are long in the past, but maybe, just maybe, these two movies can prove those people wrong. Or maybe they are both trash, and we should just live in the past, at least as far as movies go. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about a movies that seemed like had been in development for the last 25 years, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Tim Burton has been a very divisive director on this podcast in the past, but maybe this return to a class idea would inspire greatness in the once unique director. Or maybe we hated it. Or maybe it was fine. So many ways this could go. Enjoy!
It is our 420th episode, so instead of talking about movies, here is a whole episode where we try twenty varieties of Reese's candies. There are some real surprises here. We all knew that certain ones would do well, but our top choices are not unanimous. Plus, there are some real trash candies out there, so we did that research so you don't have to. Enjoy!
Look…this movie is insanely popular, and will end up making more money than most of the movies in the MCU. That said, we have some differing opinions on Deadpool & Wolverine. We all went into this movie with varying degrees of excitement, and there were most certainly some concerns with how delicately they would address Logan, but we at least all agree it was better than Deadpool 2. So that's something. Enjoy!
Full disclosure, the Beverly Hills Cop franchise does not carry the same weight that many of the other franchises do from this era of film, so when Netflix announced that they were making a fourth installment after a 30 year break, we were not exactly over the moon. We went into Axel F with pretty modest expectations, so we thought surely that could at least meet them. Netflix doesn't have a great track record in the past, but could this be the one to finally feel like an actual movie, instead of a straight to streaming release? We reveal our feelings pretty quickly this week, so just give it a listen. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about Neon Studio's new hit horror film, Longlegs. In general, horror fans seem to love this movie, but does that me that we did? I think you know, we rarely all agree with each other, and this movie is no different. So if you liked Longlegs, then you will agree with something we say, and if it wasn't for you, we still have you covered. We aim to please at COTR. Enjoy!
Ti West was always going to have a tough time living up to the hype after giving us two of the best horror films in recent memory with X and Pearl. Maxxxine looked like it had the chance to exceed all expectations, but could it stick the landing, or did Ti West do what Ti West does, and focus on style over substance? Obviously we will give you our take, but that doesn't mean it's correct. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about the thoroughly mediocre horror film, The Watchers. We didn't want you to go into this one not knowing if we liked it or not. While there are some okay parts, there are not enough to justify this being a feature length horror film. Just know going into this episode that we are going to be making fun of a lot of it. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about the low budget, deconstructed, slasher flick, In a Violent Nature. Our opinions are not perfectly aligned, but we can all agree on one thing…this movie has one of the most creative kills on 2024. So if you like horror, you should check it out, but if you want to stare, mouth agape, at one of the most excessively violent scenes of late, then you should also check out this movie. Either way, you should listen to our episode. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about new movies, one in theaters, and the other available on Netflix, Bad Boys: Ride or Die and The Hit Man. We enjoyed both movies well enough, so if you want to watch them and circle back to us, that's okay. Otherwise, sit back as we jump all over the place talking about the good and bad of these two movies. Enjoy!
Can we please cool it with the stupid names. Every prequel or spinoff has to be saddled with the most awkward collection of words to loosely tie it tie the film to the source material, but no one cares. And if you think our biggest complaint about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the title, well do we have bad news for you. Enjoy!
Sometimes the conversations are the most entertaining for us when instead of completely disagreeing about movies, we just disagree about what random moment of the movie. This week seems to be that kind of episode, when we can't help but get lost in the weeds as we discuss Abigail and The Fall Guy. Enjoy!
It was never our intention for there to be so much crossover in this episode, but it was kind of hard to avoid. Zack Snyder and Guy Ritchie are two directors who each have very specific styles that people have come to love or hate. This week we talk about their latest projects, and try to figure out where things went right, and where they went terribly, TERRIBLY wrong. Enjoy!
This week we are discussing another Godzilla movie, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. We spend too much time trying to figure out how you say the title of the film, and what it means. Opinions are split on this one, but that usually makes for better conversations. We all agree this movie is stupid, but it just depends on which flavor of stupid you like. Enjoy!
This week we are discussing the latest film from Alex Garland, Civil War. It is easy to imagine this country heading to another civil war, and easier to imagine it playing out much like the events of this movies. And yet, Civil War still leaves much left to interpretation, which gives us a chance to throw in our two cents. Enjoy!
This week we talk about how Dev Patel is now the new face of action, and plead our case for him being the new James Bond.
2023 didn't really feel like a great year for horror, but is this the year to turn that around? Late Night with the Devil could help right the course, but is it as good as the critics would have you believe? And really, how many production companies does it take to make a movie? So many questions, and hopefully we can answer some of them. Enjoy!
Look…we know that we are halfway through March already, but sometimes its takes us a little while to get to all the movies we wanted to see from a previous year. That said, we finally feel comfortable giving out our “Best of 2023” lists. Lots of crossover on our lists this year, and you would think that would make the episode considerably shorter, but you would be wrong. Enjoy!
This week we are finally getting around to one of our Patreon request movies, Blind Fury. We feel kind of bad that it took us this long to get to it, but now that we've seen it, we wonder where this movie has been our whole lives. Sorry, Zatoichi, but there is only room for one blind swordsman in our hearts. Also the poster variations for this movie are bananas!!Enjoy!
You may have heard rumblings on the internet that Madame Web is not worth your time. And while this movie isn't very good, there is still a case to be made that it is worth watching, and some of us here at COtR are willing to plead that case. We don't want you to think that all we do is talk about bad movies, so Roy is also here to give you his recap of “Oscar Bowl Sunday”. Basically, you get two episodes in one this week. What a treat!!Enjoy!
Well, our 400th episode is finally in the books, and it is time to start looking to the next hundred episodes. We are taking the pressure off all those movies by maybe watching the worst one first, Argyle. This movie is awful, and we don't recommend that you watch it, but if you do, and you want to hear people make fun of it, then welcome to our show.Enjoy!
It is hard to believe that we have been doing this show in some form or another for almost 14 years. I know that there are a lot of podcasts out there, and I know that it is hard to carve out a little piece of the internet for this show to find an audience. I am more grateful than you know for all the people that listen, but also happy that this show exists as a place for me to get to stop what I am doing and just talk about movies with some of my favorite people. Even if know one ever listens to another episode, I will still go back and listen, because these guys genuinely make me laugh. To celebrate 400 of these, we are doing one of our favorite type of show, a rewind to 1989. So sit back and enjoy some friendly bickering, as we go full nostalgia. Enjoy!
This week, on our 399th episode, we are talking about American Fiction. Because we have so much prep to do for our 400th, we will get straight to the point, this movie is fantastic, and you should definitely watch it as soon as you can. Enjoy!
This we are discussing the latest movie from Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon. We are aware that the title is longer than that, but really who has that kind of time. Is it possible that this was secretly part of a documentary where Snyder pitches the plot of a well loved movie to Netflix just to see what would happen? We really hope so, that would at least be entertaining to watch. Enjoy!
This week we are talking about the internet's latest obsession, Saltburn. We have heard lots of different opinions on this one, and it can be a divisive one, but that usually makes for a very entertaining topic of discussion. So sit back, relax, pour yourself a glass of bathwater, and enjoy!
Well, this was supposed to be the last episode of 2023, but instead this is how we are rolling into the new year. What better way to celebrate than a conversation, about two very odd, but well acted movies, May December and Dream Scenario. Just because the acting was solid doesn't mean we thought each of these movies were great, but neither were a waste of time. We hope that you can say the same for this show. Enjoy!
This is our fifth year of doing our Hallmark special, and apparently the gods who oversee podcasts didn't want us to celebrate because they cursed our show and we lost one of our host shortly after we began. We didn't lose him like he died or something, just some technical issues. Just know that Ryan really wanted to talk about Christmas in the Rockies, but now you will never know how it was. In case this is our last episode of 2023, we hope you all have a wonderful holiday season. Enjoy!
Before we post our fifth year of Hallmark movies, we thought we'd give you a replay of the first one we did. It turns out the plots have changed very little since then, so they will still seem just as fresh as ever. Enjoy!
This week we are discussing the latest series from Mike Flanagan, The Fall of the House of Usher. We also play a little catch up on some of the other things we've been watching lately. We apologize if we have missed some weeks lately, but the perfect storm of busy work schedules and sicknesses that won't go away have made it a little bit difficult to record new shows. We promise to try and do better in the new year. Also, we haven't forgotten about the several episodes that we still owe a few listeners out there. That is also something we hope to correct soon. Enjoy!
Today is Sean's birthday! To celebrate, here is our episode on The Marvels. This was the lowest opening movie in the MCU, yet most people seem to agree that it was actually pretty good. Are we “most people”? Well I guess you'll have to listen to find out. And If you haven't yet, wish Sean a happy 42!Enjoy!
This we are discussing the films of John Carney. Mostly his latest outing, Flora & Son, but also our quick ranking of his other offerings. Historically, Carney's films have been well loved on COTR, so you'll just have to listen to hear if this film is another feather in his cap, or just another straight to streaming movie. Enjoy!
With Halloween right around the corner, we are reposting one of our favorite episodes, our deep dive into all the films of John Carpenter. We know that not all of his films are horror, but many of them are still scary good. Enjoy!
What a treat, this week you get an episode on three movies! We are hoping that since you get three movies, you won't notice that the better half of the show hosts aren't on this one. So here's a little horror/comedy, a little science fiction, and a little video game underdog sports story. Surely there isn't something for most people in here. Enjoy!
