Every story is shaping us. Movies, television, books, music, and digital media do more than entertain. They work on our imaginations, stir our affections, and quietly influence what we love, admire, fear, and desire. So how can Christian parents help their children engage culture thoughtfully without falling into either fearful rejection or uncritical consumption? Brett McCracken, author and senior editor and director of communications at The Gospel Coalition, joins Davies Owens to explore what wise media consumption looks like for Christian families. Brett shares how his own love of both the church and the arts led him to spend decades thinking about Christianity and culture, and why discernment requires going deeper than simply checking a movie rating or counting objectionable content. Together, Brett and Davies discuss how stories form us, why even seemingly wholesome entertainment can communicate unhealthy ideas, the value of watching media in community, and practical questions parents can use to spark meaningful conversations with their children. They also use Project Hail Mary as a fascinating example of how Christians can identify themes of grace, sacrifice, virtue, and truth in a story that isn't explicitly Christian. The goal isn't to consume everything, nor is it to retreat from culture. It's to become people capable of recognizing what is true, beautiful, and good while also knowing when something simply isn't worth our attention. If you're raising children in a world overflowing with stories and screens, this conversation offers a thoughtful framework for helping them become wise viewers rather than passive consumers. Home isn't a place with walls, it's the whole earth, and teshuva means returning to that sense of belonging. In the latest episode of his series on home, Rabbi Josh Feigelson opens with Project Hail Mary's longing for home, then draws on Thich Nhat Hanh and Rabbi Alan Lew to reframe Rosh Hashanah, creation's birthday, as an invitation to feel at home in the world itself. Josh also includes a short breath and gravity mindfulness practice to embody the idea. Be in touch at josh@unpacked.media. Welcome back to the Following Films Podcast. On today's episode, I'm talking with VFX supervisors Paul Lambert and Mag Sarnowska about their work on Project Hail Mary. The film just hit home video, so you can pick it up right now on 4K Blu-ray, DVD, or digital. Honestly, it's easily one of the best movies to come out all year, so if you haven't seen it yet, you need to change that. For those unfamiliar, the movie follows Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship with zero memory of who he is or how he got there. As his memory slowly comes back, he realizes he's humanity's last hope to stop an extinction-level threat that's consuming the sun. He has to rely on pure science, trial and error, and an unexpected partnership with an alien engineer named Rocky to figure out a way to save Earth. What makes the film work so well—and why talking to Paul and Mag was so great—is how it grounds all this massive visual scale in practical problem-solving and a genuinely compelling friendship. Before we get into that conversation, today's episode is sponsored by Universal Pictures and their new release, Disclosure Day. That one is also out now on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD. The movie drops you right into the fallout of humanity discovering we aren't alone, focusing less on grand sci-fi spectacle and more on the chaotic, paranoid scramble of government cover-ups, media frenzy, and how ordinary people handle the rug being pulled out from under reality. The team over at Universal sent over a copy of Disclosure Day on 4K Blu-ray for me to give away to one lucky listener. If you want to win it, just send an email over to editor@followingfilms.com. Make sure you include your full mailing address in the email so I actually know where to ship the disc if your name gets pulled. Also, a quick heads-up for anyone in Arizona. I'll be out at Tucson Comic Con over Labor Day weekend, running from September 4th through September 6th. I'm hosting 13 different panels across the weekend, so if you're planning on attending, check out the schedule, come hang out, and say hello. If you enjoy what we're doing here, take a quick second to leave us a review on whatever app you're listening on, hit that subscribe button, and send this episode to a friend who loves movies. Now, let's jump into my chat with Paul Lambert and Mag Sarnowska.

House of the Dragon Season 3 ended with Sunfyre back from the dead and Rhaenyra executing the High Septon inside his own sept, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day gave the MCU its darkest Jean Grey yet. Frank, Thomas, and Jonathan break down both, plus the Marvel Hall H panel from San Diego Comic-Con and why Ghost Rider got announced with nothing behind it. On the House of the Dragon side: the Episode 7 resurrection that flipped the board, Helaena's tapestry and what it was quietly spoiling all along, where the show splits from Fire and Blood on her death, why Rhaenyra was never built to sit on a throne in the first place, and a final score for the season from each of them. Then a full spoiler conversation on Spider-Man: Brand New Day covering Sadie Sink's Jean Grey and the road to Dark Phoenix, the Hulk and the Punisher as mirrors for where Peter Parker could end up, the ending that made a handshake hit harder than a kiss, and whether Marvel has its footing back going into Doomsday, Secret Wars, and X-Men. Send it in. We read listener questions and topic suggestions on air. Key Takeaways Rhaenyra spent three seasons trying to be her father and the finale is the moment she stops. Frank frames it as her Anakin-to-Vader turn, right down to killing the realm's holy man and walking back out to claim she is the savior. Episode 7 and the return of Sunfyre lands as the season's biggest swing. Jonathan calls it a genuine plot twist with no setup, and it resets who is actually holding power going into Season 4. Helaena's knitting was spoiling the show in plain sight. Her tapestry lays out everything she has seen, and nobody in the story looks at it until it is too late. Both Frank and Jonathan score Season 3 an eight, with the caveat that Episodes 4 through 6 drag badly. Thomas, who bailed on the season early, gets talked into going back and finishing it. Spider-Man: Brand New Day works as a character study more than a clean three-act movie. The guys argue it is structurally strange on purpose, closer to picking up a random issue mid-run than a typical MCU installment. Jean Grey's power set is used in a much more specific and much darker way than expected, which the guys read as deliberate setup for Professor X's mental blocks and the eventual Dark Phoenix story. Quotes "She's now in her Darth Vader era." (Frank) "She was never meant to actually sit on the Iron Throne. She was always meant to capture it." (Frank) "The dragon fire ripping through a city is going to kill the good and the bad alike. It's not justice. It's just suffering." (Jonathan) "So many parts of this shouldn't work. But it does." (Thomas, on Spider-Man: Brand New Day) "I can't believe how much relief I suddenly felt from a damn handshake." Barry Irving returns to The Analysis to break down Spider-Man: Brand New Day and ask the big question: did Marvel actually deliver the definitive Tom Holland Spider-Man movie—or did the MCU get in its own way? Bob and Barry dig into Peter Parker's new life of loneliness and isolation, why the quieter street-level Spider-Man moments work better than the massive action sequences, and whether Brand New Day wastes its clean slate by turning into an X-Men setup halfway through. They debate Jean Grey's role as the film's antagonist, Jon Bernthal's Punisher, the return of Ned and MJ, Hulk's strange regression, Peter's darker turn, and why Spider-Man's actual rogues gallery continues to sit on the sidelines. Plus, Barry breaks down that mysterious post-credit scene and what it could mean for Doomsday, Secret Wars, Battleworld, and the possible return of all three live-action Spider-Men. Is Marvel finally building momentum again? Is superhero fatigue actually just mediocre-movie fatigue? And after a summer of Spider-Man, The Odyssey, Project Hail Mary and more, have we finally reached the most important conclusion of all? Movies are back, baby.

This week, your favorite former puppeteers blast off to the Tau Ceti system to talk about the true breakout star of Project Hail Mary—the lovable, five-legged alien engineer known simply as Rocky. In an age when Hollywood can render just about anything with a mouse click, the filmmakers made a delightfully old-school decision: they put a puppet on set. Working with creature effects legend Neil Scanlan's team, a squad of puppeteers led by James Ortiz brought Rocky to life through a combination of practical puppetry, animatronics, and visual effects, giving Ryan Gosling a real scene partner instead of a tennis ball on a stick. The result is an alien who somehow has no face... and yet delivers one of the most emotionally expressive performances of the year. We'll dive into the remarkable engineering behind Rocky's performance, from the multiple puppet builds created for different scenes to the team of puppeteers—affectionately nicknamed the "Rocketeers"—who coordinated every tilt, tap, and triumphant "Amaze!" We'll also explore how Ortiz's on-set performance was so integral to the character that he ultimately became Rocky's translated voice as well. It's a celebration of practical effects, collaborative performance, and a timely reminder that sometimes the most believable character in a blockbuster isn't the one made entirely of pixels—it's the one brought to life by a handful of incredibly talented people hiding just outside the frame.Because if there's one thing we've learned after years of hands in puppets, it's this: friendship is easier to believe... when your alien is actually in the room.

Listen to learn how to move an audience with a character who never changes. Do characters need to change for you to have a satisfying story? That's a question we've been asking since, like, episode five of this podcast. And we're finally talking about it! In this continuation of our deep dive into character arcs -- Stu, Chas and Mel break down MOANA, APOLLO 13 and THE DRESSMAKER to work out what carries a story when a character arc doesn't. If your protagonist isn't going to change, the drama has to come from what they do to everyone else. We do manage to figure out some tools that carry a steadfast story: doubt and wobble (a character with no doubt isn't steadfast, they're a psychopath), emotional events between characters, and a distinction borrowed from operant conditioning — additive rewards (you gain something) versus subtractive ones (something is taken away). The subtractive reward is why a happy ending can still feel like loss... and it's the thing we reckon that'll matter most when we get to negative arcs. We also wibble-wobble over WILLOW, TAKEN, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, THE MARTIAN, PROJECT HAIL MARY, THE GREY, ALL IS LOST, STAR WARS (as always), GREY GARDENS, PRISCILLA, and how many tampons NASA sent to space. This week on Bad Dads Film Review, the dads head into deep space for Project Hail Mary — a Ryan Gosling-led Andy Weir adaptation about astrophage, reluctant heroism, alien engineering, musical communication and the most loveable rock-spider in modern sci-fi.What we coveredThe return to Podcast Mountain after a week off, with Sidey explaining why recent recording plans went slightly sideways.Sidey and Reegs seeing The Streets at Alexandra Palace, immediately considering Iceland, and generally having a far better time than Sidey later had in Malta.Malta being very hot, not especially relaxing, and a strong avoid unless you are on the picturesque ferry to Gozo.Family hotel movie nights, including a MonsterVerse run and the crushing parental disappointment of Raiders of the Lost Ark being switched off for being boring.Ryan Gosling news from Comic-Con, including Ghost Rider, Star Wars, and whether anyone can make Ghost Rider look good on screen.Gosling's range: Only God Forgives, Lars and the Real Girl, The Gray Man, blockbuster charm and oddball credibility.Andy Weir, The Martian, and why the dads respond to optimistic science-problem movies where clever people solve practical disasters. The central crisis: astrophage is eating the Sun's energy, reducing solar output and threatening Earth. The Hail Mary mission as humanity's last desperate throw, sent to Tau Ceti because that system appears mysteriously resistant to the astrophage problem.Ryland Grace waking from stasis with no memory, dead crewmates, a HAL-like computer and a beard that suggests deep-space personal care needs work. The flashbacks revealing Grace as a molecular biologist turned school teacher recruited by Eva Stratt to help understand astrophage. The moral ugliness of Grace not volunteering for the suicide mission, then being sedated and sent anyway after the intended crew are killed. The grim Earthside stakes: collapsing sunlight, food-chain panic, frightened children and governments handing Stratt extraordinary power.First contact with Rocky, the engineer from Erid whose own planet is facing the same astrophage disaster.Rocky's musical language, the translation process, and the dads' comparison with Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The two-ship friendship: different atmospheres, pressure barriers, xenonite tunnels and two scientists learning to trust each other through diagrams and experiments.Rocky's look: rock-like, spider-like, toy-like and somehow instantly endearing. The discovery of taumoeba, the organism that eats astrophage and offers a possible solution for both Earth and Erid.Rocky saving Grace at huge personal risk, then Grace choosing to use his remaining fuel to save Rocky when he realises Rocky's ship is in danger. The film's optimistic message: cooperation across species, cultures and worlds is the only thing that saves anyone.Grace ending up on Erid, teaching alien children about Earth, and the dads enjoying the full-circle return to teaching. The reported $200 million budget, worldwide box office heading toward $700 million, UK-built Hail Mary sets, and Gosling's likely “double bubble” as star and producer.Key moments / quotesSidey says “hopes were high for Project Hail Mary” because of the Gosling/Andy Weir pedigree.Dan explains the title through American football: the last desperate throw into the end zone. The dads note that Grace “didn't fucking volunteer”, which makes Earth's plan morally spicy even if the stakes are existential.Rocky's musical tones immediately bring Close Encounters to mind. The group enjoy the idea of a sci-fi film built around “scientist guy figuring shit out”.Cris appreciates that the film is warmer and more colourful than the bleaker spaceship sci-fi he usually struggles with.Sidey reads the Grace/Rocky relationship as a story about different worlds working together on the same problem.Cris highlights the happy ending, the little rock children and the satisfying “don't go back / actually he should go back” emotional turn.Sidey notes the film has done serious box office business against a huge production budget. The final verdict lands simply: “Strong? Strong. Strong. Yeah. Strong.”VerdictThe dads give Project Hail Mary a unanimous strong recommend. They respond to the Andy Weir problem-solving structure, Ryan Gosling's easy likeability, the film's optimistic tone, and especially Rocky — an alien sidekick/friend/co-scientist who turns the film from simple survival story into something warmer and more memorable. It is big-budget, accessible sci-fi with a hopeful streak: funny, emotional, smart enough to feel satisfying, and powered by the very Bad Dads-friendly idea that cooperation beats panic, even when the Sun is being eaten. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. Amanda Elliott continues our artist profile series with an interview with Daniel Reitzenstein. Part 2 of 2. Daniel's journey through the film industry has been shaped by curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to keep evolving. From starting out as a freelance assistant video editor to becoming an animatics editor on Project Hail Mary, he has learned that building a creative career is rarely a straightforward path. In this podcast Daniel opens up about seeing himself as a “Swiss Army Knife,” working through imposter syndrome, taking chances, and why creatives shouldn't take client notes personally. He reflects on the importance of empathy, staying open when a project changes direction, and creating enough emotional distance to avoid tying your self-worth to a specific outcome. At the heart of it all, his belief is that filmmaking is a team sport—one built on trust, collaboration, and keeping the meaningful professional connections with people you meet along the way. The Odyssey is director Christopher Nolan's spectacular take on Homer's epic work – full of gods, monsters, love and very bloody revenge. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, who is trying to get home to his wife and son, played by Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland. But the journey home is not easy, as Odyssey and his crew are confronted with sea monsters, nymphs, whirlpools and cannibals. If you're looking for more great epic blockbusters, check out these recommendations:'Oppenheimer' looks at the building of the bomb, and its lingering fallout  Ryan Gosling gets serious (and very funny) about saving the planet in ‘Project Hail Mary' Connect with Pop Culture Happy Hour:Letterboxd / FacebookOur weekly newsletterSupport Pop Culture Happy Hour+See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy

This week, the AI clown car somehow shifted into another gear. Apple is suing OpenAI over alleged trade-secret theft, newspapers accuse ChatGPT of training on stolen journalism while asking a judge to sanction the company, Anthropic is out here marketing AI with what looks like a feature-length anxiety attack, and Meta managed to launch—and kill—a creepy AI photo feature in less time than it takes to binge The Bear. Meanwhile, AI Appreciation Day wants you to thank the machines, but we'd rather thank the people still creating actual art while the rest of Silicon Valley burns cash convincing us the next chatbot is definitely different this time.Outside the AI bubble, the rest of the tech industry isn't exactly inspiring confidence. Volkswagen is cutting back on its lineup, New York paused new AI data centers before the electrical grid hits its limit, Europe and the UK are getting serious about keeping kids off social media, and publishers are finally realizing maybe feeding Google's AI isn't the best business move after all. Add in surveillance companies sulking over lost police contracts, lawsuits claiming Meta let algorithms decide who gets fired, smart glasses disqualifying cyclists, and a new pile of orbital junk threatening the satellites we depend on, and it's another reminder that "move fast and break things" eventually leaves you ankle-deep in broken glass.Of course, we still made time for the important stuff: Project Hail Mary, Black Bag, the return of Middle-earth with The Hunt for Gollum and rumors that OpenAI's "revolutionary” gadget might just be a smart speaker with delusions of grandeur. Throw in digital piano repairs, anti-data-center lawn signs, AI trying to sell solar panels, too much stuff at Downtown Disney, and you get another week where reality out-satirizes satire itself. As always, never build your house in someone else's backyard, and maybe don't let the chatbot build it either.Sponsors:CleanMyMac - Get Tidy Today! We lost power again. Knocking the show off for two days. Maz negotiated a vacation to Aruba just one week into his new position at Rock & Brews. Eli Zaret drops by to explain why the USA sucks at soccer, Donald Trump's involvement with FIFA, the WNBA vs Caitlin Clark, Eli's confusion over the Swift/Kelce wedding, Terrion Arnold's free agency, the Detroit Tigers resurgence following a crappy start, the looming trade deadline, the Detroit Pistons making moves, Malik Beasley & Ed Davis indicted on gambling charges and more. Check out this AWESOME roof fight. Schoenherr Roofing would never act this way. Project Hail Mary has a Beatles song killing it on the charts. RIP GRL's Lauren Bennett. We'll remember her for Party Rock Anthem. There is an NYC high-rise of skank. Tyler Robinson is in court for the murder of Charlie Kirk. Trudi has discovered the Depp v. Heard doc on Netflix a few years late. We take a look at Tommy Lee's wild appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience. Wedding of the Century: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got married in front of a lot of famous people. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were SNUBBED! Ryan Seacrest forgot to show up to the wedding. MAGA guests had the audacity to attend. The poors entered the wedding separately from the real celebrities. Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks sang some tunes. Avril Lavigne won a prize. Maureen Callahan is not a fan with skinny Anna Faris these days. North West fans look to be pretty old and male. North West needs serious help from strangers. 13-year-old North does not need school with her whopping net worth. Phil Mickelson is making excuses for his past behavior. Pat O'Brien is still alive. Nepo-babies are angering the modeling industry. Influencers are so out of style. Multiple women have accused Marcellus Wiley of rape. His wife is really angry at him. US Senate candidate, Graham Platner, is under fire for a slew of reasons... but the most recent allegation may bury his bid. Florida 'Golden Boy' Andrew Gillum has been busted for drugs. Former Trump attorney, Michael Cohen, has landed a new gig at WABC. Larry David doesn't like Donald Trump. Rob Reiner got the last laugh (after he was violently murdered by his own son). Markleverse: There will be no Buckingham Palace for Prince Harry. Harry lost his case against The Daily Mail. Prince William, meanwhile, is well liked and appearing on American podcasts.
