DZ-129: Steadfast Character Arcs - Agents of Change

Draft Zero: a screenwriting podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 31, 2026 156:20

Listen to learn how to move an audience with a character who never changes. Do characters need to change for you to have a satisfying story? That's a question we've been asking since, like, episode five of this podcast. And we're finally talking about it! In this continuation of our deep dive into character arcs -- Stu, Chas and Mel break down MOANA, APOLLO 13 and THE DRESSMAKER to work out what carries a story when a character arc doesn't. If your protagonist isn't going to change, the drama has to come from what they do to everyone else. We do manage to figure out some tools that carry a steadfast story: doubt and wobble (a character with no doubt isn't steadfast, they're a psychopath), emotional events between characters, and a distinction borrowed from operant conditioning — additive rewards (you gain something) versus subtractive ones (something is taken away). The subtractive reward is why a happy ending can still feel like loss... and it's the thing we reckon that'll matter most when we get to negative arcs. We also wibble-wobble over WILLOW, TAKEN, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, THE MARTIAN, PROJECT HAIL MARY, THE GREY, ALL IS LOST, STAR WARS (as always), GREY GARDENS, PRISCILLA, and how many tampons NASA sent to space. This week on Bad Dads Film Review, the dads head into deep space for Project Hail Mary — a Ryan Gosling-led Andy Weir adaptation about astrophage, reluctant heroism, alien engineering, musical communication and the most loveable rock-spider in modern sci-fi.What we coveredThe return to Podcast Mountain after a week off, with Sidey explaining why recent recording plans went slightly sideways.Sidey and Reegs seeing The Streets at Alexandra Palace, immediately considering Iceland, and generally having a far better time than Sidey later had in Malta.Malta being very hot, not especially relaxing, and a strong avoid unless you are on the picturesque ferry to Gozo.Family hotel movie nights, including a MonsterVerse run and the crushing parental disappointment of Raiders of the Lost Ark being switched off for being boring.Ryan Gosling news from Comic-Con, including Ghost Rider, Star Wars, and whether anyone can make Ghost Rider look good on screen.Gosling's range: Only God Forgives, Lars and the Real Girl, The Gray Man, blockbuster charm and oddball credibility.Andy Weir, The Martian, and why the dads respond to optimistic science-problem movies where clever people solve practical disasters. The central crisis: astrophage is eating the Sun's energy, reducing solar output and threatening Earth. The Hail Mary mission as humanity's last desperate throw, sent to Tau Ceti because that system appears mysteriously resistant to the astrophage problem.Ryland Grace waking from stasis with no memory, dead crewmates, a HAL-like computer and a beard that suggests deep-space personal care needs work. The flashbacks revealing Grace as a molecular biologist turned school teacher recruited by Eva Stratt to help understand astrophage. The moral ugliness of Grace not volunteering for the suicide mission, then being sedated and sent anyway after the intended crew are killed. The grim Earthside stakes: collapsing sunlight, food-chain panic, frightened children and governments handing Stratt extraordinary power.First contact with Rocky, the engineer from Erid whose own planet is facing the same astrophage disaster.Rocky's musical language, the translation process, and the dads' comparison with Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The two-ship friendship: different atmospheres, pressure barriers, xenonite tunnels and two scientists learning to trust each other through diagrams and experiments.Rocky's look: rock-like, spider-like, toy-like and somehow instantly endearing. The discovery of taumoeba, the organism that eats astrophage and offers a possible solution for both Earth and Erid.Rocky saving Grace at huge personal risk, then Grace choosing to use his remaining fuel to save Rocky when he realises Rocky's ship is in danger. The film's optimistic message: cooperation across species, cultures and worlds is the only thing that saves anyone.Grace ending up on Erid, teaching alien children about Earth, and the dads enjoying the full-circle return to teaching. The reported $200 million budget, worldwide box office heading toward $700 million, UK-built Hail Mary sets, and Gosling's likely “double bubble” as star and producer.Key moments / quotesSidey says “hopes were high for Project Hail Mary” because of the Gosling/Andy Weir pedigree.Dan explains the title through American football: the last desperate throw into the end zone. The dads note that Grace “didn't fucking volunteer”, which makes Earth's plan morally spicy even if the stakes are existential.Rocky's musical tones immediately bring Close Encounters to mind. The group enjoy the idea of a sci-fi film built around “scientist guy figuring shit out”.Cris appreciates that the film is warmer and more colourful than the bleaker spaceship sci-fi he usually struggles with.Sidey reads the Grace/Rocky relationship as a story about different worlds working together on the same problem.Cris highlights the happy ending, the little rock children and the satisfying “don't go back / actually he should go back” emotional turn.Sidey notes the film has done serious box office business against a huge production budget. The final verdict lands simply: “Strong? Strong. Strong. Yeah. Strong.”VerdictThe dads give Project Hail Mary a unanimous strong recommend. They respond to the Andy Weir problem-solving structure, Ryan Gosling's easy likeability, the film's optimistic tone, and especially Rocky — an alien sidekick/friend/co-scientist who turns the film from simple survival story into something warmer and more memorable. It is big-budget, accessible sci-fi with a hopeful streak: funny, emotional, smart enough to feel satisfying, and powered by the very Bad Dads-friendly idea that cooperation beats panic, even when the Sun is being eaten. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. Amanda Elliott continues our artist profile series with an interview with Daniel Reitzenstein. Part 2 of 2. Daniel's journey through the film industry has been shaped by curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to keep evolving. From starting out as a freelance assistant video editor to becoming an animatics editor on Project Hail Mary, he has learned that building a creative career is rarely a straightforward path. In this podcast Daniel opens up about seeing himself as a “Swiss Army Knife,” working through imposter syndrome, taking chances, and why creatives shouldn't take client notes personally. He reflects on the importance of empathy, staying open when a project changes direction, and creating enough emotional distance to avoid tying your self-worth to a specific outcome. At the heart of it all, his belief is that filmmaking is a team sport—one built on trust, collaboration, and keeping the meaningful professional connections with people you meet along the way. Amanda Elliott continues our artist profile series with an interview with Daniel Reitzenstein. Part 1 of 2. Take 240: What's NewBig week. Jonathan and JP are back and there's a lot to get into.List It or Nix It kicks things off with seven fresh trailers — Mayday, I Play Rocky, The Uprising, Behemoth, The Other Mommy, Bad Apples, and Doomsday all go through the gauntlet. In What We've Been Watching, Jonathan saw The Odyssey and then apparently went on a full childhood cinema tour — Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Pagemaster, Harriet the Spy, Stuart Little, Shark Tale, and Zathura. JP brings Project Hail Mary, Lawrence of Arabia, After Hours, and The Odyssey to the table, with House of the Dragon and Silo on the TV side. Then the news, and it's a good one this week. The Odyssey opened to $124.5 million domestically and $264.1 million globally — Nolan's biggest worldwide opening ever, beating The Dark Knight Rises. The only films that opened bigger this year are Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Jon Bernthal filmed the Trojan Horse sequence submerged in cold water, Nolan offered to pull him out, and Bernthal's response was essentially: try harder. The film has no real competition until Spider-Man on July 31, which gives it room to run on a $250 million budget that needs the legs. And then — the Avengers: Doomsday trailer dropped this morning. First proper look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Thor rallying heroes, closing with "we need a miracle" before turning around stunned at a "hey pal." Channing Tatum as Gambit. Cyclops, Mystique, Ant-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Wakandans. Tickets on sale now. Opens December 18. The SDCC Hall H panel is Saturday — further reveals expected. It's a good time to love movies.

In this episode, Paul Anleitner traces how a culture that once watched Rocky in full-throated sincerity learned to read everything through suspicion. We talk about the modern story we inherited, the postmodern anti-story that dismantled it, and the meaning crisis left in the rubble. There is a vibe shift happening as people reach for nostalgia and re-enchantment. We get into the three pillars of meaning, mean world syndrome, why Top Gun: Maverick and Project Hail Mary landed the way they did, and Paul's central claim: that kenosis, self-emptying love, is the shape of reality. Paul Anleitner is a cultural theologian who writes and speaks on the role of culture and story in our quest for meaning. He is the author of "Based on a True Story: Vibe Shifts, the End of Deconstruction, and the Reboot of Meaning" (Nelson Books)His unique interdisciplinary approach integrates theology, philosophy, and science to help individuals and institutions navigate cultural shifts and address perennial religious longings.Paul's Book:Based on a True StoryConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@shiftingculturepodcast.comGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. This week, the AI clown car somehow shifted into another gear. Apple is suing OpenAI over alleged trade-secret theft, newspapers accuse ChatGPT of training on stolen journalism while asking a judge to sanction the company, Anthropic is out here marketing AI with what looks like a feature-length anxiety attack, and Meta managed to launch—and kill—a creepy AI photo feature in less time than it takes to binge The Bear. Meanwhile, AI Appreciation Day wants you to thank the machines, but we'd rather thank the people still creating actual art while the rest of Silicon Valley burns cash convincing us the next chatbot is definitely different this time.Outside the AI bubble, the rest of the tech industry isn't exactly inspiring confidence. Volkswagen is cutting back on its lineup, New York paused new AI data centers before the electrical grid hits its limit, Europe and the UK are getting serious about keeping kids off social media, and publishers are finally realizing maybe feeding Google's AI isn't the best business move after all. Add in surveillance companies sulking over lost police contracts, lawsuits claiming Meta let algorithms decide who gets fired, smart glasses disqualifying cyclists, and a new pile of orbital junk threatening the satellites we depend on, and it's another reminder that "move fast and break things" eventually leaves you ankle-deep in broken glass.Of course, we still made time for the important stuff: Project Hail Mary, Black Bag, the return of Middle-earth with The Hunt for Gollum and rumors that OpenAI's "revolutionary” gadget might just be a smart speaker with delusions of grandeur. Throw in digital piano repairs, anti-data-center lawn signs, AI trying to sell solar panels, too much stuff at Downtown Disney, and you get another week where reality out-satirizes satire itself. As always, never build your house in someone else's backyard, and maybe don't let the chatbot build it either.Sponsors:CleanMyMac - Get Tidy Today! Did you see "Project Hail Mary" and hear that the adorable character "Rocky" was a puppet?  Well, that's only half right, as more than half the shots were created in 3d animation!  In this podcast, Tom and  Tony interview Arslan Elver- VFX supervisor at Framestore for Project Hail Mary.  Learn how both the CG and puppeteer teams worked together to create an amazingly unique performance on a character with no face!

What if “The Martian” but with an alien buddy? We break down “Project Hail Mary,” and marvel at what a good translation of a sort-of-unfilmable book it really is! Why do we love alien puppets so much? Why is Jason checking his watch at the end? We give this movie a thumbs down—by which we mean we liked it! Amaze amaze amaze! Belgium manhandles the US, Eli Zaret in-studio, Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce's over-the-top wedding, Prince Harry loses again, Phil Mickelson denies his nude flexing selfie, Tommy Lee on Joe Rogan, the leaning tower of New York, and DTE remains the worst. We lost power again. Knocking the show off for two days. Maz negotiated a vacation to Aruba just one week into his new position at Rock & Brews. Eli Zaret drops by to explain why the USA sucks at soccer, Donald Trump's involvement with FIFA, the WNBA vs Caitlin Clark, Eli's confusion over the Swift/Kelce wedding, Terrion Arnold's free agency, the Detroit Tigers resurgence following a crappy start, the looming trade deadline, the Detroit Pistons making moves, Malik Beasley & Ed Davis indicted on gambling charges and more. Check out this AWESOME roof fight. Schoenherr Roofing would never act this way. Project Hail Mary has a Beatles song killing it on the charts. RIP GRL's Lauren Bennett. We'll remember her for Party Rock Anthem. There is an NYC high-rise of skank. Tyler Robinson is in court for the murder of Charlie Kirk. Trudi has discovered the Depp v. Heard doc on Netflix a few years late. We take a look at Tommy Lee's wild appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience. Wedding of the Century: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got married in front of a lot of famous people. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were SNUBBED! Ryan Seacrest forgot to show up to the wedding. MAGA guests had the audacity to attend. The poors entered the wedding separately from the real celebrities. Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks sang some tunes. Avril Lavigne won a prize. Maureen Callahan is not a fan with skinny Anna Faris these days. North West fans look to be pretty old and male. North West needs serious help from strangers. 13-year-old North does not need school with her whopping net worth. Phil Mickelson is making excuses for his past behavior. Pat O'Brien is still alive. Nepo-babies are angering the modeling industry. Influencers are so out of style. Multiple women have accused Marcellus Wiley of rape. His wife is really angry at him. US Senate candidate, Graham Platner, is under fire for a slew of reasons... but the most recent allegation may bury his bid. Florida 'Golden Boy' Andrew Gillum has been busted for drugs. Former Trump attorney, Michael Cohen, has landed a new gig at WABC. Larry David doesn't like Donald Trump. Rob Reiner got the last laugh (after he was violently murdered by his own son). Markleverse: There will be no Buckingham Palace for Prince Harry. Harry lost his case against The Daily Mail. Prince William, meanwhile, is well liked and appearing on American podcasts. Meghan Markle used to be a yacht girl. Reminder that Harry got his butt kicked by his awesome brother. Dave Landau will drop by tomorrow. Click for your chance to win Drew's Champions Club tickets!
