Rick Tittle covers everything from EPL Soccer to Major League Baseball, but be sure to note Ricky T is an unapologetic and die-hard A's and Raiders fan. Rick is joined in the studio by award-winning directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to talk about their new film "Project Hail Mary."
Space is a dangerous place. Even recently we learned that the entire Artemis program has been rebooted, adding more rockets and risks! In other worlds and other galaxies, “space” is full of human life, music, adventure, romance, and fantastical new worlds. Just in time for Firebreak, book 1 of the Firebird Interlude Trilogy, we're joined by longtime science fiction novelist Kathy Tyers to explore how the best space operas sing through this teeming expanse. Episode sponsors Firebreak by Kathy Tyers Realm Makers 2026 Conference & Expo The Hole-Man by Dan Dietz The Lorehaven Authorship Mission update New at Lorehaven: Andromache review, weekly reviews Subscribe free to get updates and join the Lorehaven Guild You'll get notified of monthly events, like last week's livestream. Backstory: Kathy (Tyers) Gillin Kathy Tyers sold her first novel, Firebird, to Bantam Spectra in 1986. Since its initial 1987 publication, it has been rereleased by Bethany House Publishers, Marcher Lord Press, and Enclave Publishing, and was followed by further Firebird-universe novels Fusion Fire and Crown of Fire. Kathy finished the Firebird series in 2011 and 2012 with Wind and Shadow and the messiah tale Daystar. Enclave Publishing has also re-released her early novels One Mind's Eye, Shivering World (Christy Award winner, 2019), and Crystal Witness. Now she's returning to the Firebird whorl for a new series of novels. The Firebird Interlude trilogy begins March 10 with the release of Firebreak. Kathy is also known for her Star Wars Expanded Universe novels—The Truce at Bakura and New Jedi Order: Balance Point. She lives in Montana with her husband William T. Gillin. KathyTyers.com on Facebook 1. What are the origin stories of space opera? 1818: Mary Shelley's first sci-fi-ish/horror novel Frankenstein 1830: British author Percy Greg's poetical Across the Zodiac Late 19th century: the prolific Jules Verne, across Earth and space Late 19th/early 20th century: H. G. Wells brings the humanism Early 20th century: Edgar Rice Burroughs shares pulp adventure Other written tales and film serials helped create early space opera This tradition focused not just on big ideas, but big human stories Without these tales, we might not have stories like Star Wars And that's one way that today's guest learned she liked sci-fi 2. Why do today's fans love space opera? Kathy Tyers has written harder science fiction, like Shivering World. Spaceships are cool, but many fans like human drama even more. For example, the Firebird Series is set in a far future galactic Whorl. Readers resonate with Lady Firebird and her husband Brennan. This, by the way, marks a rare example of married-couple heroes. Similarly, Star Wars has spaceships, but focuses on human heroes. Christians also see cool ideas and tech as means to human ends. Without our humanity, we become “minds of metal and wheels.” Even the best Star Trek episodes well understood this reality. 3. What might be the future of space opera? More about the Firebird Interlude series—titles, dates, speculation. Coming this June, Kathy Tyers gives a keynote at Realm Makers. Meanwhile, we may expect to March onward into big space opera. Project Hail Mary, based on Andy Weir's novel, gets early plaudits. Next up, actor Ryan Gosling and director Shawn Levy's Starfighter movie (set in the Star Wars universe) is receiving a new hope from fans. People do want futuristic, human-centric science-accented drama. And yet Christians see this not as simply “hope in the human spirit” but hope of redemption, for grace-filled humans and a future age. Com station Top question for listeners What space opera stories help you sing in joyful gratitude? Next on Fantastical Truth Kaizoku ou ni ore wa naru! Today around the world, millions of fans who love Japan's hit manga/anime series, One Piece, are rejoicing. First, because after 1,170+ chapters and nearly 30 years since 1997, creator Eiichiro Oda's pirates-with-powers story is sailing toward its final arcs. Second, because the popular anime is following soon after, breaking hiatus to resume in April. And third, because on March 10, Netflix is christening the One Piece live-action series Season 2, after 2023's Season 1 flagrantly and happily broke the “anime to live-action curse.” Why do fans (like Stephen himself) love these comical, earnest adventures of Captain Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates?

What a month of February in the world of sports, as countries converged to Italy for the Winter Olympics to compete for medals, use up all of the condoms, and try to say they are better than the other in a high-stakes, high-energy environment. Bryan and Mario have fun thinking back to the best, worst, and most WTF moments of the games!America owns women's figure skating, a Norwegian skier wins gold in every race he entered, while a teammate let the world know of his infidelity. A Slovakian fugitive was caught, an American skiing legend suffers a gruesome injury, Canada cheats in curling (allegedly), and a cute dog gets involved in the action. USA Hockey gave their fierce rivals Canada two massive L's in the gold medal games, with the guys and gals saying kilometers aren't better than miles. But many in the country are now saying the guys are traitors for visiting the White House? Is that warranted? On the movie entertainment side, Project Hail Mary is shaping to be quite the hit, as early reviewers are hailing it as an amazing adaption of the Andy Weir novel. The guys get geeked for the film by thinking of the best sci-fi movies of all time and ranking them on a totally legit and valid tier list. Right answers only. It's an episode of debates, gasps, forehead slaps, and a whole lot of hype and anticipation.

This week marks a small deviation from our reshare series because I wanted to bring you something timely and special.I had the opportunity to sit down with actor and filmmaker Daniel Roebuck, whose new film The Hail Mary just released in theaters today and will soon be available on streaming platforms like Amazon and Apple.Daniel is a husband, a father of two, a practicing Catholic, and a man who is unapologetic about his faith — even in Hollywood. He shared openly about growing up in Catholic school, being shaped by the prayers of faithful women, and how this newest film is deeply personal to him. He describes it as a love letter to the nuns who believed in him when he was young.
For episode 279, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes, with producer Steve Prusakowski working behind the scenes. This time around, I'm eager to hype Myles up for Project Hail Mary, which I'd just seen and fell head over heels in love with. I'm also super fond of Hoppers, while lukewarm on Scream 7 (reviewed here) and not a fan of In the Blink of an Eye (reviewed here). Myles, on the other hand, has caught up with The Rip (my review is here), Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die (reviewed here), and Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie (rave review is here). We get into all of that, as well as look at this weekend's precursors to see what Oscar could do, with final voting underway. Throw in your questions, as well as a preview of an upcoming video game segment, and we're back in a big way...As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 279th one to date (here's to many more). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!

This week, we're diving into Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë and its film adaptation. Kyleigh completely fell in love with the novel, while Hannah and Micaela admired its depth and intensity, even if it didn't quite make their favorites list. We unpack our very different reading experiences, share all our thoughts on the movie (which we surprisingly loved!), and chat about book-to-film adaptations in general—what works, what doesn't, and why some stories translate better to the screen than others. It's moody, dramatic, and full of opinions. Just the way we like it. We'll be reading Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir in the month of February! Grab your copy today! We've got 15 books and series here, so there should be something to love for almost every reader (although we need some traditional fantasy page turners – send us some recommendations in the comments please)! Plus, at the end of the episode we each rank our personal top 3. We intentionally excluded YA and military sci-fi books, although those are often also page-turners - look out for episodes about each of those soon! Brent's brother, Alex, joined us for this episode, and brought us a whole new batch of books (and frankly a couple new subgenres) to enjoy. LitRPG / progression fantasy just keep getting more popular, and we can see why – the books we've picked up have all been so, so fun to read (although it probably helps we've been reading Alex's recommendations so far, the best of the best from the hundreds of LitRPG books he's read). CRIME 101 hit theaters with zero hype. Unlike HOPPERS, PROJECT HAIL MARY, or THE ODYSSEY, CRIME 101 got almost zero promotion... but, in this case, that's a good thing. The ensemble cast including Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan and Halle Berry (among others) is outstanding, the directing is incredible and the writing is even better. So let's talk about it...

Rod and Karen banter about sandwiches chopped in fourths, Project Hail Mary, knee pads, NBA All-Star game ratings, and Stephen A Smith. Then they discuss Saks filing for bankruptcy, Bahama Breeze closing stores, Wendy’s closing restaurants, a woman arrested for calling 911 to get a ride home, a woman threatens to blow up the school over daughter’s boyfriend’s lunch, and a son threatens mom with a rifle and a sword ratchetness. Description This week we're skipping the blockbusters for the weird, wild, and mostly forgotten gems. Grab your neural implants and alien blasters as we explore the sci-fi movies that time almost left behind. From cyberpunk head-scratchers to B-movie alien invasions, we revisit the fascinating, flawed, and surprisingly ambitious sci-fi films that didn't quite make the Hall of Fame, but absolutely deserve another look. News Marvel Oreos - The Stuf of Legends has arrived with superhero-themed cookies. Millennium Falcon Pilot Chair - A detailed rolling chair replica inspired by Han Solo's cockpit seat is now available. The 'Burbs TV Series - A Peacock series inspired by the 1989 Tom Hanks classic quietly dropped all episodes. The Mummy 4 - Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return on May 19, 2028 for the next installment. During the Super Bowl, we got new looks at The Mandalorian and Grogu, Project Hail Mary, Super Mario Galaxy, Supergirl, Disclosure Day, and The Adventures of Cliff Booth. Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua has been diving into Reacher, where the towering former military policeman dispenses his own brand of justice with quiet intensity and very loud punches. Based on the Lee Child novels, the series delivers tightly constructed mysteries and satisfying payoffs that make it perfect comfort viewing for action fans. Jay is revisiting Twin Peaks Season 1, soaking in David Lynch's wonderfully strange blend of soap opera melodrama and unsettling mystery. Between cherry pie, coffee, and cryptic dream sequences, it's a masterclass in mood and quirky storytelling that still feels fresh decades later. Sci-Fi Saturdays - This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay looks at the forgotten sci-fi gem Colossal (2017). Gloria (Anne Hathaway), an out-of-work woman struggling with alcoholism, returns to her hometown only to discover she may somehow be connected to a giant monster attacking Seoul. It's a clever, genre-bending mix of kaiju chaos and personal drama, blending big sci-fi spectacle with intimate character study. Hathaway did a great job, and Jason Sudeikis plays against type in a role that's equal parts charming and unsettling. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Movies! The 1990s were packed with massive sci-fi blockbusters! But what about the ones that didn't dominate the multiplex? This week, Jay and Shua explore the fascinating middle tier of 90s science fiction: the cyber-thrillers, alien shootouts, dystopian futures, and existential thought experiments that lived just outside the spotlight. From cult classics to genuine box office swings, they discuss why some of these films faded from pop culture memory while others quietly built loyal fanbases. It's a nostalgic, lighthearted look at the ambition, weirdness, and undeniable creativity that made 90s sci-fi such a strange and wonderful era. Which animated character would you pick? Who would be a good mashup? Let us know! First person that emails me with the subject line, "What the world needs now, is love sweet love." will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. We kick things off in FOLLOW UP with the ongoing "nuclear war" between Automattic and WP Engine, where discovery has revealed Matt Mullenweg's alleged hit list of competitors and a desperate attempt to bully payment processors—because nothing says "open source" like an eight-percent royalty shakedown. Meanwhile, the Harvard Business Review confirmed what we already knew: AI isn't reducing our work; it's just compressing it until we're all working through lunch and burning out faster while Polymarket turns our collective brain rot into a literal "attention market" where you can bet on Elon's mindshare.Transitioning to IN THE NEWS, Elon has officially pivoted SpaceX from Mars to the Moon, presumably because building a "self-growing lunar city" is easier than admitting the Red Planet is hard, though his xAI all-hands rant about "ancient alien catapults" suggests he's been staring at the sun too long. Between X allegedly taking blue-check lunch money from sanctioned Iranian leaders, Meta facing trials for creating "predator-friendly hunting grounds," and Russia finally pulling the plug on WhatsApp, the internet is looking more like a digital dumpster fire than ever. Add in Discord leaking 70,000 government IDs, OpenAI shoving ads into ChatGPT while safety researchers flee the building like it's on fire, and a "cognitive debt" crisis eroding our ability to think, and you've got a recipe for a tech-induced psychosis that even crypto-funded human trafficking can't outpace. In MEDIA CANDY, we're wondering about the soft-core porn intro in the latest Star Trek: Starfleet Academy while Apple buys the total rights to Severance for seventy million dollars—because in-house production is the only way to keep those ballooning budgets under control. Super Bowl trailer season gave us a glimpse of The Mandalorian and Grogu and a Project Hail Mary teaser, while Babylon 5 has finally landed on YouTube for free, proving that even 90s serialized sci-fi eventually finds its way to the clearance bin.Over in APPS & DOODADS, Meta Quest is nagging us for our birthdays like a needy relative, while Roblox had to scrub a mass-shooting simulator—because "AI plus human safety teams" is apparently just code for "we missed it until it hit the forums." Ring's Super Bowl ad for "Search Party" accidentally terrified everyone by revealing a mass surveillance network for pets that's a slippery slope toward a police state, and Waymo is now paying DoorDashers ten bucks just to walk over and close the car doors that autonomous tech still can't figure out.Wrapping up with THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE, we dive into the Mandalorian Hasbro reveal where Sigourney Weaver's action figure comes with no accessories because her existence is enough of a flex. We explore the grim reality of "RentAHuman," where humans are paid pittance to pretend AI agents are actually doing work, and look at "Trash Talk Audio," which sells a $125 microphone made out of a literal old telephone for that authentic Gen-X "get off the line, I'm expecting a call" aesthetic. From Marcia Lucas finally venting about the prequels and a rare book catalog specifically for our aging generation, we're reminded that while the future is a chaotic mess of "GeoSpy" AI and corporate reshuffling at Disney, at least we still have our cynical memories and some free versions of Roller Coaster Tycoon to keep us from losing it completely.Sponsors:CleanMyMac - Get Tidy Today!
