In this episode of Smart Franchising, Dan Rowe sits down with Sameer Malhotra, founder of Cafe Spice, to unpack one of the most powerful—and overlooked—growth levers in franchising: co-packing. What began as a family-run Indian restaurant business evolved into a national operation supplying sauces, grains, entrées, and ready-to-eat meals to Whole Foods, Aramark, Sodexo, and emerging restaurant brands across the country.Dan and Sameer break down how centralized production lowers labor, prep, cleaning, equipment, and real estate costs while improving consistency, food safety, and unit economics. They discuss what makes a brand “co-packer ready,” why many chef-driven concepts struggle to scale, and how simplifying menus and processes unlocks faster, more profitable expansion—without sacrificing flavor or authenticity. The conversation also dives into minimum order quantities, distributor relationships, tariffs, sourcing challenges, and where founders should start when outsourcing production.Drawing on Dan's experience scaling brands like Five Guys, Qdoba, and The Halal Guys, this episode delivers practical guidance for founders, franchisees, and operators looking to scale smarter, protect their brand, and grow with confidence.
Crystal Hairston drops back into the studio to discuss two outrageously over-the-top Killer Baby Franchises: It's Alive & Basket Case! Why were both coincidentally turnt into trilogies? Was It's Alive one of Larry Cohen's more coherent B-pictures or was it more cheesy/low-brow fun? Are any of the Basket Case films competently made or are they more of the trashy fun variety? Come sit and listen with us as we continue this nostalgia themed podcast week!
Episode Description: “What would you say if you suddenly came face-to-face with your greatest hero?” That's the question that kicks off this unforgettable episode of The Sandy Show, where Sandy and Tricia dive deep into the thrill—and awkwardness—of celebrity encounters, the legends who shape our culture, and the moments that leave us speechless. This episode opens with Sandy's excitement over the new Muhammad Ali postage stamp, sparking a lively debate: Skinny Elvis or Fat Elvis? The conversation floats like a butterfly as Sandy shares a hilarious, regret-tinged story about missing his chance to meet Ali—only to hear how his friend JB casually greeted the champ at a Starbucks. “He just said, ‘How you doing, champ?' That was it. That's all he said.” The simplicity of the moment is both touching and relatable, leaving Sandy to wonder if he would have been able to say anything at all or just openly weep in awe. From there, the show pivots to the power of Hollywood franchises, revealing how Zoe Saldana dethroned Scarlett Johansson as the highest-grossing actor, thanks to the Avatar series. “The secret to being the top-grossing actors? Franchises and making crap—no, they're not crappy. They're all good. You just won't go see them!” laughs Sandy, as Tricia teases his “snooty” movie tastes. The episode doesn't shy away from the wild side of fame, either. The hosts recount Sean Penn's rebellious antics at the Golden Globes—smoking through the ceremony and pouring drinks with rockstar disregard. This leads to a string of personal stories: sharing an elevator with Sean Penn, a chance encounter with Maya Angelou in London, and the surreal feeling of being in the presence of greatness. “It's weird when you meet people… Maya Angelou, Sean Penn—a little bit different categories, obviously, but we were in the chips back then.”Memorable quotes and moments abound, from Sandy's self-deprecating humor about celebrity run-ins (“I froze… do something, do something, do something!”) to the playful banter about blockbuster movies and the legends who make them. This episode is a rollercoaster of nostalgia, laughter, and genuine wonder at the icons who inspire us—and the ordinary moments that make them human.Call to Action: If you've ever dreamed of meeting your idol or just love a good story, this episode is for you!

Zwei beliebte Franchises haben einen 3. Teil bekommen! Professional sports franchises are some of the most recognizable brands on earth, yet many operate with negative annual cash flows. This deep dive moves past the scoreboard to explore the "Billion-Dollar Paradox": how trophies worth billions can lose money on paper while their valuations double every decade. The Pillars of Team RevenueModern sports finance has moved far beyond ticket sales and hot dogs. Today, revenue is driven by long-term, stable engines:Media & Broadcast Rights: The "stability engine" of sports. Leagues like the NFL have secured over $100 billion in media deals with giants like Amazon and ESPN. These deals provide a guaranteed income floor that supports high valuations regardless of on-field performance.Stadium Economics & Premium Seating: The real differentiator is controlling the "premium experience." Teams like the Dallas Cowboys generate over $600 million annually through high-margin luxury suites, club access, and naming rights deals (e.g., the $700M crypto.com Arena deal). The Real Estate Play: Sophisticated owners now build "entertainment districts" around stadiums. The Atlanta Braves' development, The Battery, actually generates more operating profit than the baseball team itself due to steady rental income and higher margins. The Financial Drains: Why Teams "Lose" MoneyDespite massive revenue, the high cost of competitiveness creates a brutal balance sheet:The Cost of Winning: Player salaries typically account for 50% to 60% of total revenue. This is a gargantuan fixed cost compared to other industries. The Luxury Tax: Leagues use this penalty to discourage runaway spending. Teams like the Golden State Warriors have paid hundreds of millions in penalties just to keep a championship-caliber roster together, viewed as an investment in long-term brand equity.Infrastructure Debt: Modern stadiums cost between $1B and $5B. These are financed with massive debt packages tied to future media revenue, making interest payments a significant recurring cost.Valuation vs. ProfitabilityIn sports, traditional metrics like EBITDA are often useless because they are volatile or negative. Instead, finance teams use:Revenue Multiples: Valuing a team based on total annual revenue divided by the sale price. Because revenue (from media) is predictable and growing, this provides a more stable anchor for billionaires and private equity firms.Asset Appreciation: Owners view teams like fine art or exclusive real estate. The scarcity of franchises (fixed supply) combined with rising global demand drives valuations up even when the income statement is in the red.Case Studies: Strategy on the SpreadsheetFC Barcelona: A cautionary tale of brand strength failing to protect a team from a "debt trap" caused by rigid player contracts and heavy infrastructure loans.Phoenix Suns: A textbook turnaround showing how modernizing ticketing analytics and stadium monetization can skyrocket a team's valuation before a single game is won.Oakland Athletics (Las Vegas Relocation): A pure infrastructure strategy—abandoning a money-losing venue for a new stadium they control in a high-tourism market.

In this episode of Head, Heart, and Boots, Brandon and I sit down with Claire Carreras, a musician, comedian, fashion entrepreneur, and now co-owner of 1-Tom Plumber Austin to unpack one of the most unexpected and compelling career journeys we've ever featured. Claire opens up about a childhood marked by constant relocation across multiple countries, how creativity and performance became her anchor, and how those early experiences shaped the grit and resourcefulness she now brings to building service businesses. We explore the rise and collapse of her fashion brands, the financial devastation of COVID, and what it took to rebuild her life from scratch in a new country. Claire shares the mindset shifts that helped her scale restoration and plumbing operations, the leadership lessons she brought from stages and tour vans, and her refreshingly honest view on managing people, burnout, and generational differences inside a 24/7 business. If you're drawn to real entrepreneurial stories, the raw ones, with bruises, resilience, and reinvention; this conversation is worth every minute. Hope you enjoy. Chris Why You Should Listen... [00:05:15] How a turbulent childhood, constant relocation, and exposure to wildly different cultures forged Claire's resilience and leadership instincts [00:13:03] How acting, stand-up comedy, and 15 years of international touring built the confidence, grit, and communication skills she now uses to scale home-service companies [00:20:27] What three failed fashion businesses taught her about timing, financial risk, market collapse, and how to recover when everything falls apart [00:28:14] Why she jumped into One-Tom Plumber after COVID wiped out her income, and how she built a 5-truck operation in months by leaning into clarity, systems, and urgency [00:45:06] How Claire motivates teams through uncertainty, connects personally without lowering standards, and navigates generational differences around pressure and mental health Did you know... Chief among them: the slow realization that Hollywood learned absolutely the wrong lessons from its biggest successes. Take Marvel. Once upon a time, this was the gold standard. The MCU built toward Avengers: Endgame like it mattered, because it did. When nostalgia showed up, it was earned. Even the contentious stuff, like Captain Marvel or the very “look around, ladies” A-Force moment, happened inside a franchise people still trusted. Then the Disney+ floodgates opened. Too many shows, too little focus, and suddenly big ideas like Doomsday didn't feel epic. They felt panicked. The machine kept pumping content, but the soul quietly clocked out. Spider-Man: No Way Home briefly reminded everyone how this is supposed to work. Nostalgia wasn't the point. Story was. Seeing multiple Spider-Men together actually meant something, and for a minute, Marvel felt dangerous again. Then everyone immediately tried to copy the trick without understanding why it worked. Star Wars didn't even get that far. Somehow, with the original cast alive and willing, the sequel trilogy never once put Luke, Leia, and Han on screen together. Not once. It's arguably the biggest fumble in modern blockbuster history. Nostalgia wasn't used to unite fans. It was used like window dressing, leaving audiences staring at the screen thinking, “How did you miss that?” Indiana Jones followed the same road into the ditch. Instead of honoring what Indy stood for, the franchise tried to modernize the wrong things, misunderstand its own appeal, and slowly sand down the character until nothing recognizable was left. The so-called “Phoebe Waller effect” isn't about one person. It's about Hollywood confusing quippy cynicism and tonal shifts with actual evolution and then acting shocked when audiences check out. And that's the real takeaway here. Nostalgia can't save a floundering global box office. Audiences aren't idiots. They know when they're being sold a memory instead of a story. Recognition has replaced risk, and comfort IP has replaced creativity. The result is a lot of familiar logos and a shocking lack of excitement. And then there's Dexter, quietly walking into the room and embarrassing half of Hollywood. Instead of screaming “remember this?” every five minutes, Dexter did something radical. It changed the setting, brought in new characters, raised the stakes, and kept the core of the character intact. Same morally broken serial killer, new problems. No endless callbacks. No cosplay storytelling. Just character, consequence, and actual intent. Which is wild, because Dexter figured out the thing billion-dollar franchises still can't. If the only thing your revival has is memories, you don't have a revival. You have a reunion tour. Dexter wasn't trying to recreate Miami or trick audiences into nostalgia dopamine. It trusted that people missed the character, not the wallpaper. So while Marvel is throwing multiverses at the wall, Star Wars forgot to put its Trinity in the same room, Indiana Jones got power-washed into irrelevance, and DC is still arguing with itself, Dexter just showed up, changed the scenery, and reminded everyone how this is actually done. Same Dexter. New playground. No panic. No apology tour. Five hundred episodes later, Brian and Darryl aren't mad that pop culture changed. They're annoyed that it changed this lazily. Because if there's one thing a decade of podcasting proves, it's this: people don't stop loving franchises. Franchises stop loving their audiences. And yeah… we're still talking about it.
