Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay stop by a strip club while on duty to talk about an action-comedy classic, 'Beverly Hills Cop.' Bombay opens up discussion about this fish out of water tale of a Detroit cop with some stories about his family dealing with cops while living in Detroit. Then the fellas dive into the movie, which has a thin plot that is just an excuse to let prime Eddie Murphy riff, and let killer '80s songs rip. The inciting incident involves Murphy's Axel Foley being visited by a "hoodlum" friend from his past, and that leads to Andy recalling when he had to cut ties with an uninvited house guest. In the flick, that leads to Axel heading out to Beverly Hills where he befriends mismatched friends Taggart and Rosewood while talking himself out of countless situations by lying on the fly. Comedy does the heavy lifting, but there's some great action set pieces, a screaming irate police captain — which Hollywood needs to bring back as a trope — and infectious tunes peppered throughout. It closes with a freeze frame of Murphy making a goofy face into the camera before cueing up a Patti LaBelle track. Much like the film being discussed, the fellas do not take themselves very seriously this episode.

#VAMPril 2: Double Suck continues as we explore the dark and mysterious graveyard of vampire films produced by New World Pictures.  This week, we are joined by the always hilarious Tommy Bechtold as we discuss 1989's BEVERLY HILLS VAMP starring Eddie Deezen (WAR GAMES), Britt Ekland (MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN) and Tim Conway Jr. (KFI, AM 640).  Imagine, if. you will, a film that mixes the comedy/action of BEVERLY HILLS COP with the artistic allure of Grace Jones in VAMP.  Keep imagining because this movie doesn't come close.  Directed by genre workhorse Fred Olen Ray (a man who seemingly directed every VHS tape your parents warned you about), this cinematic oddity follows a group of hapless Midwestern dudes who come to Los Angeles to break into Hollywood and stumble into a brothel full of vampires—because of course they do.  Hilarity ensues as they try and find their way out of a vampire's spell and into a movie that would, today, be shot in Bulgaria over Los Angeles. We attempt to make sense of this movie as the only available copies are missing a few key ingredients including 1) foul language, 2) nudity and 3) ambient audio.  What do we mean by "ambient audio"?  It's the little things we take for granted when we watch a movie.  Things like footsteps, car noises, or the sound of a door opening or closing.  Ambient noises is just scratching the surface.  BEVERLY HILLS VAMP is filled with wild choices, wilder characters and abnormally horny dudes.  If there is such a thing.  For all the shows in Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here:  https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/

Don Simpson was one-half of one of the most successful production partnerships in Hollywood history. His reality-distortion-field helped bring about films like Flashdance, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, The Rock, Crimson Tide, and Days of Thunder, films that collectively grossed more than $3 billion dollars. Don Simpson's life is a cautionary tale with an ignominious ending forever ensconced in Hollywood history. His appetite for drugs, prostitutes, plastic surgery, black Levi's 501 jeans (worn once and discarded), wrecking Porsches, pharmacology, peanut butter, and pizza got the best of him at age 52. Grease up your pompadours and get your switchblades ready. This week we're taking a look at Walter Hill's 1984 rock and roll fable, Streets of Fire. Coming in hot off the back of the 1982 smash hit buddy cop picture, 48 Hours, Hill and co-writer Larry Gross could write their own checks and dictate their own destinies and sold Hill's dream project, a retro nostalgia vehicle about tough guys, femme fatales, bad guys, and pop music but when the movie landed in the screening rooms at Universal they knew they had a problem. Streets of Fire is weird as hell and out of step with what movie-going teens of the summer of 1984 were looking for. So dire was the outcome that Streets of Fire ended up getting killed in its opening weekend against one of the weakest Star Trek movies and then the following week Ghostbusters dropped and until Beverly Hills Cop came out it was the only thing anyone wanted to talk about. In the years that followed Streets of Fire gained a cult following that appreciates what Hill was trying to do. It's an upgrade from The Warriors in many ways and the sound track, paired with powerhouse performances from Diane Lane and Willem Dafoe in early roles, delivers a wildly entertaining, deeply silly action movie with an enduring legacy. 00:00 Introductions05:16 Save the WNBA12:36 Conservative Beer20:15 Mike Lindell27:43 No Other Land34:48 Sarah Silverman—We talk energy drinks, travel, and Hawaii.Crossing multiple time zones when traveling is a pain in the tuckus, which Jake remembers from his military days. Also: nathan recommends people watch Beverly Hills Cop annually, because it's such a solid movie.—Angel Reese said that if she doesn't get a raise, she's sitting a season out.Last week, we laughed at the idea the league's worst player would make demands like that, this week we discuss the fact that the WNBA is a money-losing venture.Even with all the eyeballs Caitlin Clark brought to the table, the WNBA was in the red to the tune of $40 million in 2024. Jake has ideas involving White Lotus and Only Fans, tune in to hear what they are.—Seth Weather is really insecure, because he has a teeny-tiny weiner. How do I know this? Well, he founded a conservative beer company, and sells “ULTRA RIGHT” beer.(And yes, the all caps is part of the brand.)Now, if there were whispers Weather made the beer as a joke to sell to insecure dudes with small weiners, that would be one thing. But it looks like he's sincere in his belief that the culture war is important, and that living your life is too easy, and beer drinkers should bring politics into their urine-water.Problem is, he may have positioned himself to be slightly too close to the branding of Michelob Ultra, and now Anheuser-Busch is suing him. We're rarely on the side of big corporations here, but here's to hoping AB bankrupts him.—Speaking of crazy, Mike Lindell is in the news. Again. You have to (in some ways) respect a dude who is so crazy, he believes in his cause, despite all evidence to the contrary.Lindell loses case after case in court, and even though it's because he's a madman with zero evidence that anything he's said is even remotely true, he's sticking by the idea the deep state is out to get him.How do such monumentally stupid people become so successful? It's insane.Side discussions involve Elon Musk having gone insane. —There's no such thing as bad press, and Miami Beach mayor Steven Meiner is proving that.A local movie theater in his town began showing the Oscar-winning documentary, “No Other Land,” and instead of letting this happen quietly, Meiner fluffed up the one-inch wonder worm between his legs and said, “Not on my watch!”Naturally, by protesting the film Meiner brought attention to it.Neither Jake nor nathan had heard of the movie, because neither of them watches the Oscars (who does?), but now it's in the zeitgeist.Anyway, why is the mayor of any city getting involved in what films a movie theater shows?Well, tracking back to Seth Weather and his idiot beer: insecurities. The loudest voices are always the dumbest, and Meiner proves that.Sadly.Side discussions involve complete a-hole Mahmoud Khalil, who, though a complete a-hole, should have his right to be a complete a-hole protected in a country that supposedly supports free speech.—Speaking of free speech, Sarah Silverman is going on tour. What happens when that's advertised on social media?Lol, the dumbest of the dumb come out to play.Hear what they have to say about Sarah and her jokes.Idiots on Parade: we mock the news, so you don't have to.Tune in and get your giggle on.Find Jake at @jakeveveraFind nathan at nathantimmel.com

80's Flick Flashback
#129 - "Beverly Hills Cop" (1984) with Chris McMichen

80's Flick Flashback

This 80s classic solidified Eddie Murphy as a superstar. Beverly Hills Cop was the top-grossing film of 1984 and earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay. What became one of AFI's Top 100 comedies almost turned into a very different film with Sylvester Stallone, more action, and less humor. Directed by Martin Brest, the film introduced Axel Foley, a street-smart Detroit cop who investigates a murder in Beverly Hills. With its perfect mix of humor, action, and Murphy's charm, the film reshaped the action-comedy genre. Join Tim Williams and returning guest co-host, Chris McMichen, as they dive into Beverly Hills Cop on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: Throughout the production, the screenplay underwent constant revisions, which sometimes resulted in actors receiving their lines just before they were expected to deliver them. This posed a challenge for actor Stephen Elliott, who was caught holding a rolled-up script while portraying Police Chief Hubbard. Fortunately, the director believed this detail enhanced his performance, so Elliott is seen holding those script pages in the film. The Beverly Hills Police Department uses a "satellite tracking system" to locate Foley and Rosewood. Although this system was fictional when the story was created, it later inspired the development of modern satellite technology, including the Global Positioning System (GPS). The mansion used in the final shootout between Foley and Maitland is the same mansion seen in the final shootout between Matrix and Arius in "Commando" (1985). Coincidentally, both Foley and Matrix were trying to rescue somebody named Jenny in that mansion in their respective films.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDB, https://www.cracked.com/article_44671_40-trivia-tidbits-about-beverly-hills-cop-on-its-40th-anniversary.htmlhttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/60484/15-things-you-may-not-have-known-about-beverly-hills-copSome sections were composed or edited by ChatGPT We'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! John Humphrey and Aaron Alexander take a trip to Zamunda for the ultimate classic comedy experience—Coming to America! Directed by John Landis (The Blues Brothers, Trading Places), this Eddie Murphy-led masterpiece follows Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy, Beverly Hills Cop, Shrek) as he embarks on a journey to Queens, New York, to find a woman who will love him for who he truly is. Alongside his hilarious and ever-loyal best friend Semmi (Arsenio Hall, Harlem Nights, Black Dynamite), Akeem trades his royal lifestyle for a humble job at McDowell's, the fast-food restaurant that totally isn't McDonald's, all while attempting to win the heart of Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley, The Haves and the Have Nots). With an unforgettable supporting cast that includes James Earl Jones (Star Wars, The Lion King) as the commanding King Jaffe Joffer, John Amos (Good Times, Die Hard 2) as Cleo McDowell, and Madge Sinclair (Roots, The Lion King) as Queen Aoleon, the film delivers some of the most quotable moments in comedy history. We react to all of the legendary scenes, including Akeem & Semmi Arrive in Queens, The Barbershop Scene, The First McDowell's Encounter, Akeem Meets Lisa, Sexual Chocolate's Hilarious Performance, The Stolen Money Scene, The Bathing Scene, Semmi's Expensive Lifestyle, The Subway Proposal, and The Grand Wedding Reveal! This film not only gave us some of the best comedic performances but also introduced multiple iconic characters played by Murphy and Hall, showcasing their legendary range. And let's not forget the incredible soundtrack and cultural impact that made this film a staple of ‘80s cinema. Plus, with the sequel Coming 2 America continuing the story, we reflect on the franchise's legacy and how it holds up today!
