Couch Potato Theater: Cobra (1986) - 1980's Cannon Films Retrospective Watch: Fandom Podcast Network YouTube Channel Link: https://www.youtube.com/@FandomPodcastNetwork Listen: Couch Potato Theater Audio Podcast Link: https://fpnet.podbean.com/category/couch-potato-theater Welcome to Couch Potato Theater, where we celebrate our favorite movies on the Fandom Podcast Network! This year we're celebrating 1980's Cannon action films with a retrospective on how important these movies were to our fandom then, and the nostalgic grasp they still have on us today. On this episode we discuss Sylvester Stallone as Lt. Marion "Cobra" Cobretti in the Cult Classic movie, Cobra (1986). Cobra is a 1986 American action film directed by George P. Cosmatos and written by Sylvester Stallone, who stars in the titular role. The film, loosely based on the 1974 novel A Running Duck by Paula Gosling (later published as Fair Game and filmed under that title in 1995), co-stars Reni Santoni, Brigitte Nielsen and Andrew Robinson. The script was largely inspired by Stallone's original script for Beverly Hills Cop (1984). Cobra was released to generally negative reviews with criticism on its excessive violence and overuse of genre tropes, but it was a box office success and also has since been considered as a cult classic. Plot Synopsis: Criticized for his brutal and unconventional ways, hard-as-nails Lieutenant Cobra is the tip of the spear of LAPD's elite Zombie Squad. But crime runs rampant in the city. As a string of seemingly unconnected assaults on civilians drags the hardened officer into a violent war with the psychopaths of The New World, an underground cult aiming to weed out the weak, Cobra must escort key witness Ingrid to a safe house. However, the Night Slasher and the movement's delusional killers will stop at nothing to track her down. Now, there is no turning back--only one man stands in the way of the disease. Cobra is the cure! We will also discuss the films 1980's Cannon Films Famous Producers, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. We also mention the documentaries about them, Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014), and The Go-Go Boys: The Inside Story of Cannon Films (2014). Not many celebrity careers have the legs of Eddie Murphy's. He starts out as a teenage stand up comic and soon becomes the breakout star on “Saturday Night Live.” Then Eddie seamlessly transitions from the small screen to the silver screen with comedies like “Beverly Hills Cop,” “48 Hours,” and “Trading Places.” And with his specials “Delirious” and “Raw,” he establishes himself as one of his generation's most influential and important comics as well. And then, after an embarrassing and potentially career-ending scandal, he manages to reinvent himself as the beloved star of family movies like “The Nutty Professor,” “Mulan,” and “Shrek.” Eddie Murphy was born funny and his legacy will be felt for generations to come. You can follow Brooke and Aricia on socials at @brookesiffrinn and @ariciaskidmorewilliamss. In this deeply candid and unforgettable episode of Still Here Hollywood, host Steve Kmetko welcomes Bronson Pinchot, the instantly iconic star of Beverly Hills Cop and Perfect Strangers. Pinchot shares how that single scene, inspired by a real Israeli makeup artist, turned him into a "same-day sensation." With emotional depth and razor-sharp wit, Bronson opens up about navigating fame, finding healing through storytelling, and staying grounded through a turbulent rise in Hollywood. RUNDOWN Episode 344 of Mitch Unfiltered opens with a humorous lament over the nonexistence of a 344 area code and quickly shifts into cultural reflection—from Morgan Wallen's massive Seattle shows to a heartfelt tribute to late jazz musician Chuck Mangione. Mitch and Hotshot Scott marvel at Ichiro Suzuki's eloquent, humorous, and emotional Hall of Fame speech, calling it mesmerizing and long overdue. Mitch and Hotshot dig into the Mariners' playoff hopes and trade deadline calculus. They debate the potential impact of acquiring Gino Suarez—Seattle fan favorite and current Diamondbacks slugger—and analyze Josh Naylor's recent addition to the lineup. Investment advisor and father of four, John Wasnock of North Bend, WA, stunned the poker world by finishing second in the 2025 World Series of Poker Main Event, earning a $6 million prize. A lifelong poker hobbyist and devoted Mariners fan, Wasnock's dream run began as a bucket-list entry and ended in financial freedom — allowing him and his wife to retire and focus on family. Despite losing a pivotal hand on the river, Wasnock played with composure and integrity, becoming a beloved underdog in the process. Brady Farkas joins Mitch Unfiltered to reflect on Ichiro Suzuki's powerful, funny, and fully English Hall of Fame speech in Cooperstown—calling it the best he's heard. Despite the celebratory weekend, the Mariners' on-field play disappointed, as they went 3–4 and squandered chances to gain ground in the playoff race. Trade deadline buzz surrounds players like Luke Raley and Geno Suarez, while Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh give fans reasons to stay hopeful. Mitch and Jason Puckett (aka "Puck") dive into Chapter 10 of KJAren'ts, with plenty of laughs and commentary. Mitch shares how cohost Hotshot Scott somehow always has the perfect contact—including a North Bend native who just won $6 million as runner-up at the World Series of Poker. They also unpack the Seahawks' surprise release of Noah Fant and speculate on Seattle's thin wide receiver room heading into the season. Physical media offers a lot of pleasures this week. Do Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski feel guilty about any of them? Certainly not of Jack Nicholson's collaboration with Mike Nichols or one of their “Why Is This Not On Blu-ray” titles getting the 4K treatment. There's a little history of the nudie plus Bertolucci does a family film. An MST3K selection may not be worth all the skewering though neither was Joe Dante's snakebit summer effort from 1998. All that plus Larry Cohen's grossly satirical take on consumerism and what Beverly Hills Cop might have been like if it starred Sylvester Stallone.3:22 - Criterion (Carnal Knowledge (4K), You Can Count On Me (4K), All We Imagine as Light)21:44 - Shout! In 1991, Daniel Petrie, the director of Beverly Hills Cop and Turner & Hooch, brought a script he'd co-written with David Koepp, based on the novel by William P. Kennedy, to the big screen. Starring Sean Astin a year before he had everyone chanting his name in Rudy and Wil Wheaton a year after he'd beamed off the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, this film had its finger on the pulse of moviemaking trends. When the red dawn sees an elite boarding school under siege by Colombian terrorists, leaving the students running scared from lethal weapons, these kids must stand and deliver to defend their home away from home alone, or risk dying hard and ending up in the dead poets society. With Louis Gossett Jr., Denholm Elliott, Jerry Orbach, R. Lee Ermey, and Andrew Divoff rounding out the ensemble cast, this coming-of-age action flick was a modest success at the box office, but quickly forgotten, finishing 87th at the ‘91 box office. But old playthings never die, they just sink to the bottom of the toybox, so we're digging up and dusting off Toy Soldiers - and we're gonna play with it for a little bit. The legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer (The Rock, Top Gun) and ace director (and returning guest) Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun Maverick) join Stephen Follows to talk their latest movie F1. From launching careers and creating timeless hits like "Flashdance" and the original "Beverly Hills Cop" – and its recent hit sequel, "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" – to the iconic dogfights in "Top Gun" – and let's not forget the absolute juggernaut that was "Top Gun: Maverick" – Jerry Bruckheimer knows how to make movies that hit hard and stay with you! With a career that spans over five decades and an eye-watering $16 billion at the worldwide box office, Jerry is not just a producer; he's practically a cinematic institution. His projects are all about that sleek style, that relentless energy, and that incredible knack for knowing exactly what audiences want. He's the force behind countless films and shows that have shaped modern cinema, a true visionary who understands how to deliver pure, unadulterated entertainment. And joining Jerry today, we have the visionary director who, in my humble opinion, is one of the most exciting filmmakers working right now! This is Joseph Kosinksi a director who's consistently pushed the boundaries of visual storytelling, known for his meticulous design, breathtaking practical effects blended seamlessly with cutting-edge CGI, and an incredible knack for capturing speed and intensity on screen like no other in "TRON: Legacy" , the sci-fi mystery of "Oblivion" and "Only the Brave" And of course, he absolutely blew us away with "Top Gun: Maverick".More recently, he directed the compelling Netflix sci-fi thriller "Spiderhead." Now, he's once again teaming up with Jerry Bruckheimer to bring us back to the racetrack for what promises to be one of the most immersive racing films ever made: "F1." This highly anticipated movie, which he directed, was written by Ehren Kruger from a story by himself and Kruger. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay stop by a strip club while on duty to talk about an action-comedy classic, 'Beverly Hills Cop.' Bombay opens up discussion about this fish out of water tale of a Detroit cop with some stories about his family dealing with cops while living in Detroit. Then the fellas dive into the movie, which has a thin plot that is just an excuse to let prime Eddie Murphy riff, and let killer '80s songs rip. The inciting incident involves Murphy's Axel Foley being visited by a "hoodlum" friend from his past, and that leads to Andy recalling when he had to cut ties with an uninvited house guest. In the flick, that leads to Axel heading out to Beverly Hills where he befriends mismatched friends Taggart and Rosewood while talking himself out of countless situations by lying on the fly. Comedy does the heavy lifting, but there's some great action set pieces, a screaming irate police captain — which Hollywood needs to bring back as a trope — and infectious tunes peppered throughout. It closes with a freeze frame of Murphy making a goofy face into the camera before cueing up a Patti LaBelle track. Much like the film being discussed, the fellas do not take themselves very seriously this episode.

#VAMPril 2: Double Suck continues as we explore the dark and mysterious graveyard of vampire films produced by New World Pictures. This week, we are joined by the always hilarious Tommy Bechtold as we discuss 1989's BEVERLY HILLS VAMP starring Eddie Deezen (WAR GAMES), Britt Ekland (MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN) and Tim Conway Jr. (KFI, AM 640). Imagine, if. you will, a film that mixes the comedy/action of BEVERLY HILLS COP with the artistic allure of Grace Jones in VAMP. Keep imagining because this movie doesn't come close. Directed by genre workhorse Fred Olen Ray (a man who seemingly directed every VHS tape your parents warned you about), this cinematic oddity follows a group of hapless Midwestern dudes who come to Los Angeles to break into Hollywood and stumble into a brothel full of vampires—because of course they do. Hilarity ensues as they try and find their way out of a vampire's spell and into a movie that would, today, be shot in Bulgaria over Los Angeles. We attempt to make sense of this movie as the only available copies are missing a few key ingredients including 1) foul language, 2) nudity and 3) ambient audio. What do we mean by "ambient audio"? It's the little things we take for granted when we watch a movie. Things like footsteps, car noises, or the sound of a door opening or closing. Ambient noises is just scratching the surface. BEVERLY HILLS VAMP is filled with wild choices, wilder characters and abnormally horny dudes. If there is such a thing. They also dive into some recent and classic concerts that Jim and/or Nick have attended, including Iggy Pop, Ratboys, Suzanne Vega, Daryl Hall, Heart, Cheap Trick, and more. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to recap her birthday night out (a show at The Hideout featuring Al Scorch), answer more questions from the Ultimate Pop Culture Quiz, and react to some surprising behind-the-scenes Hollywood trivia—like the fact that Beverly Hills Cop was originally written for Sylvester Stallone, and My Cousin Vinny was first pitched to Andrew "Dice" Clay. Don Simpson was one-half of one of the most successful production partnerships in Hollywood history. His reality-distortion-field helped bring about films like Flashdance, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, The Rock, Crimson Tide, and Days of Thunder, films that collectively grossed more than $3 billion dollars. Don Simpson's life is a cautionary tale with an ignominious ending forever ensconced in Hollywood history. His appetite for drugs, prostitutes, plastic surgery, black Levi's 501 jeans (worn once and discarded), wrecking Porsches, pharmacology, peanut butter, and pizza got the best of him at age 52. Listen in for the outrageous tale of how a pudgy kid from Alaska talked his way into transforming big-budget Hollywood blockbusters for a new decade. LINKS: Buy my guest Charles Fleming's definitive book about Hollywood in the 80's, High Concept: Don Simpson and the Hollywood Culture of Excess. Grease up your pompadours and get your switchblades ready. This week we're taking a look at Walter Hill's 1984 rock and roll fable, Streets of Fire. Coming in hot off the back of the 1982 smash hit buddy cop picture, 48 Hours, Hill and co-writer Larry Gross could write their own checks and dictate their own destinies and sold Hill's dream project, a retro nostalgia vehicle about tough guys, femme fatales, bad guys, and pop music but when the movie landed in the screening rooms at Universal they knew they had a problem. Streets of Fire is weird as hell and out of step with what movie-going teens of the summer of 1984 were looking for. So dire was the outcome that Streets of Fire ended up getting killed in its opening weekend against one of the weakest Star Trek movies and then the following week Ghostbusters dropped and until Beverly Hills Cop came out it was the only thing anyone wanted to talk about. In the years that followed Streets of Fire gained a cult following that appreciates what Hill was trying to do. It's an upgrade from The Warriors in many ways and the sound track, paired with powerhouse performances from Diane Lane and Willem Dafoe in early roles, delivers a wildly entertaining, deeply silly action movie with an enduring legacy.
