Gene Hackman left us in shocking and tragic circumstances on February 18, 2025. With his signature intensity, he may be one of the least stony actors of all time, but he was one of the best. To pay tribute to him we have his trippiest movie this side of CISCO PIKE (1971) with the quick-cut, dolly-shot, bullet-hole-cam madness of Sam Raimi's THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995). In this tribute to Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968), Gene Hackman delivers one of his most villainous performances as old west tyrant John Herod, who draws every shootist to his desert town for an annual gunfighting competition where the contestants duel to the death. Joining us to talk about Raimi's modern spaghetti western is actor LENNIE LOFTIN, who plays the grizzled townie Foy and gets to toss around an up-and-coming Russell Crowe in the movie. THE QUICK AND THE DEAD also stars Sharon Stone in the gender-swapped Man-with-No-Name role, Crowe in his first U.S. picture, and then rising star Leonardo DiCaprio as the cocky kid who is pretty good with a six-shooter. Plus Lance Henriksen, Keith David, Pat Hingle, Raynor Schiene, Roberts Blossom, and the great Woody Strode in his final film. Just about everybody's in this one and we are so lucky to have Loftin here to talk about this amazing film. Also joining host Bob Calhoun in her OMFYS debut, Rosemary Picado. Now you have heard her haunting vocals in the "O Nosferatu" carol in our NOSFERATU CHRISTMAS episode, but this is her first time as a panelist. She's a QUICK AND THE DEAD expert and fanatic, so we couldn't do this episode without her. Cory, Greg, and Philena are on assignment but they'll be back for The PhilenApocalypse III: Drag Story Time where Philena returns to torture the olds with TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! The Quick Draw Competition is on! This is the only way to seek sanctioned justice, make a lot of cash and/or is a way to make a name for yourself. In this town, everyone's got a story, and everyone's got a reason. It's all kind of a crappy town that nobody really wants to live in. Sam Raimi directs this gunslinger's paradise. There is an entire cast worthy of checking out here. Ellen (Sharon Stone), Cort (Russell Crowe), Kid (Leonardo DiCaprio), Sgt. Cantrell (Keith David), Ace (Lance Henriksen), etc… make sure they're all handy with the steel. Overseeing and dominating the competition is Herod (Gene Hackman), a villain with an interesting sense of rivalry and integrity. RTS rustles up a drink or two at the saloon. Ask for Horace (Pat Hingle). La-Mar and Collin bet on all the right brackets – they're on a money train! All aboard! If you've got the grit, see this through.

Up next this week is the Sam Raimi cult classic, The Quick and the Dead!
Director Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead & Spider-Man trilogies) just seemed born to apply his skills to a send-up of a spaghetti western and back in the mid '90's he got his chance. You've got Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct) at the PEAK of her star-power playing the strong-but-silent type, a gunslinger coming to the town of Redemption seeking revenge and getting roped into a gun-duel tournament....Hackman taking his Oscar-winning thug sheriff role from Unforgiven up to 11 as the main villain....journeyman players like Lance Henricksen, Keith David, Pat Hingle, and Tobin Bell all having a blast. PLUS you have a truly baby-faced Leo DiCaprio and youthful-looking Russell Crowe (in his American film debut) both bringing the heat with interesting supporting characters who form different types of bonds with Stone's protagonist. What results is a high-energy genre hybrid which was a flop on initial release but has since built up a cult following as it now approaches it's thirtieth anniversary. Let's find out who is the quickest....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

"The gunfight is in the head, not the hands." The second western we look at this week is the underrated film by Sam Raimi The Quick and the Dead.

Cowboy specialist and romantic partner, Mal, returns again for a vengeance, female-led, cowboy-themed Mortal Kombat. Keith David! Gene Hackman! Sharon Stone! A NATIVE AMERICAN CHARACTER WHO CAN'T BE KILLED BY BULLETS (until he can)! LITERALLY JIGSAW! This movie has it all.
Judgment isn't something we talk about all that often. But if there is a new heaven and a new earth coming, what we do in this life matters. We are called to social holiness, and that means not standing in judgment over one another, but raising one another up. 2 Peter 3: 8-15a fmhouston.com

It's your classic rewind of episode 2, from the amazing mind of Sam Raimi we cover the 90s western film: The Quick And The Dead. Originally recorded in January 2021. Enjoy!
The street is ours as Peter joins us once again to draw our guns on one of the wildest and most entertaining Westerns ever made, The Quick and the Dead from 1995. Listen as we chronicle the decline of the Western as a film genre in the late 1990s, marvel at director Sam Raimi's visual ingenuity in creating the movie's unique look, and praise producer and star Sharon Stone's foresight in casting then lesser-known actors such as Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. Warning: Contains explicit language, spoilers, and phallic firearm discussions. Our theme song is "Nostalgia TV" by Edward Jonathan Blakeley through Lynne Publishing.

église AB Lausanne ; KJV 2 Timothy 4 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. ...
Today on the show we have legendary actor Lance Henriksen. I had the pleasure of work with Lance on my film Red Princess Blues: Genesis and if was a surreal experience.Lance has been in over 300 films through-out his remarkable career. He's mentored Tarzan, Evel Knievel and the Antichrist, and fought Terminators, Aliens, Predators, Pumpkinhead, Pinhead, Bigfoot, Superman, the Autobots, Mr. T, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. He's worked with directors James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Sidney Lumet, Francois Truffaut, John Huston, Walter Hill, David Fincher, John Woo, Jim Jarmusch and Sam Raimi, but this is just skimming the surface. An intense, versatile actor as adept at playing clean-cut FBI agents as he is psychotic motorcycle-gang leaders, who can go from portraying soulless, murderous vampires to burned-out, world-weary homicide detectives, Lance Henriksen has starred in a variety of films that have allowed him to stretch his talents just about as far as an actor could possibly hope.He played Awful Knoffel in the TNT original movie EVIL KNIEVEL, directed by John Badham and executive produced by Mel Gibson. Henriksen portrayed Awful Knoffel in this project based on the life of the famed daredevil, played by George Eads. Henriksen starred for three seasons (1996-1999) on Millennium, Fox-TV's critically acclaimed series created by Chris Carter (The X-Files).His performance as Frank Black, a retired FBI agent who has the ability to get inside the minds of killers, landed him three consecutive Golden Globe nominations for "Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Drama Series" and a People's Choice Award nomination for "Favorite New TV Male Star."Henriksen was born in New York City. His mother, Margueritte, was a waitress, dance instructor, and model. His father, James Marin Henriksen, who was from Tønsberg, Norway, was a boxer and merchant sailor.Henriksen studied at the Actors Studio and began his career off-Broadway in Eugene O'Neill's Three Plays of the Sea. One of his first film appearances was as an FBI agent in Sidney Lumet's DOG DAY AFTERNOON, followed by parts in Lumet's NETWORK and PRINCE OF THE CITY.He then appeared in Steven Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND with Richard Dreyfuss and François Truffaut, DAMIEN: OMEN II and in Philip Kaufman's THE RIGHT STUFF, in which he played Mercury astronaut Capt. Wally Schirra.James Cameron cast Henriksen in his first directorial effort, PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING, then used him again in THE TERMINATOR and as the android Bishop in the sci-fi classic ALIENS. Sam Raimi cast Henriksen as an outrageously garbed gunfighter in his quirky western THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. Henriksen has also appeared in what has developed into a cult classic: Kathryn Bigelow's NEAR DARK, in which he plays the head of a clan of murderous redneck vampires. He was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in the TNT original film THE DAY LINCOLN WAS SHOT.In addition to his abilities as an actor, Henriksen is an accomplished painter and potter. His talent as a ceramist has enabled him to create some of the most unusual ceramic artworks available on the art market today. His new film is called Alpha Rift.Nolan Parthmore was just a regular guy, hanging with friends, working his game store, flirting with his co-worker, then one day, destiny came calling. A courier delivers a mysterious antique helmet with no note or description. When Nolan puts it on, his whole world changes. The helmet comes to life and calls out to an evil demon, Lord Dragsmere, who was imprisoned by Nolan's deceased father. Nolan soon discovers he is next in the bloodline, heir to The Nobleman, destined to become a hero whether he wants to be or not. Since the Dark Ages, the Noblemen have been guardians against the 13 Devil's Apostles: dark forces escaped from hell and let loose upon on earth. Generations later, it's the heirs of these original knights that possess the power to open the Alpha Rift:the only defense against these supernatural foes.Enjoy my conversation with Lance Henriksen.
The God and Gospel of grace do not mean that there is no accountability. Pastor Brad Cooper teaches the creedal truth of Acts 10:42 and places this in the context of seven kinds of judgements in Scripture. Matthew 16:27, 25:31-32, Rev. 1:7, John 5:22.

Then, we talk about the long gestation period of the project, and its many iterations attached to various directors (including Mike Nichols, John Dahl, and Ben Stiller!). Finally, we unpack the similarities and differences between Raimi's vision of the snowbound, Midwestern morality tale and that of his pals Joel & Ethan Coen in their 1996 landmark 'Fargo'.Listen & Subscribe to To The White Sea Follow Jordan Fish on TwitterFollow Ray Tintori on TwitterFollow To The White Sea on Twitter....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

What do "The Quick and the Dead" and NBA Jam have in common? Is loose clothing appropriate for quick-draw competitions? How many flashbacks is too many? Commissioner Edwin instructed the Shat Crew to drink a few beers and have fun with this episode, and we were happy to oblige. Technically, Big D drank decaf coffee, but Gene made up for it with a few Red Trolleys. Along the way, Dick Ebert offered explosives advice and narrated "The Quick and the Dead" camera movement. Gene noted moments where he could feel Joss Whedon's influence, and both hosts agreed its pretty cool to see a kid shoot her dad in the face. For those listeners deeply invested in our chronic discussion of Gene Hackman vs Kevin Spacey, this episode settles the matter once-and-for-all while tipping a hat to Sam Raimi's unmistakable style. We let out listeners pick our last CommentaRAIMI movie, and so we watched Sam Raimi's meticulously stylish tournament arc of a movie We talk about the appeal of Westerns, movies where a bad guy owns a town, Russell Crowe's floppy-haired fuckboy sex appeal, and the inherent awkwardness of walking into a place and having people look at you. This is a commentary track, and can be listened to while you watch The Quick and The Dead! Follow us on twitter: @XenaWarriorBiz This podcast is the spinoff/sister podcast of SAILOR BUSINESS.
