It's another oddly formatted week, but this time it's Lauren fighting the bed bugs early. While we have her, we talk The Roses, and Eden, then the boys talk The Truth About Jussie Smollett?, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Alien Earth Episode 4, Ozark, and Battlestar Galactica. Andrew and Lauren were able to catch The Roses this week, in time for the show. As big fans of the original film, The War of the Roses, everyone was expectedly excited for this one. Unfortunately, despite a solid cast, it just didn't quite deliver on the magic of the original. It does have its moments, and it isn't all bad, but it does leave a lot to be desired, and it's probably best to just watch the original Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner classic. Before she slips off into the land of dreams, Lauren talks about the Ron Howard film, Eden. It has an incredible cast including Jude Law, Daniel Bruhl, Vanessa Kirby, Ana de Armas, and Sydney Sweeney. This is a true story of a group leaving Eastern Europe in the 30s, looking to start a new world. Unfortunately, it's not the Eden the title suggests, as there is a lot of backstabbing and infighting, a la Lord of the Flies. Overall, it's a really solid film and worth watching, though the box office numbers suggest otherwise. Once the adult supervision is gone, Andrew takes the lead and talks about the new Netflix documentary, The Truth About Jurnee Smollett? It's that ? that actually really sells this one. While this doc jumps deep into the situation that made Jurnee Smollett infamous, it does such a good job of staying neutral that it's unlikely to change your opinion on the matter if you already have one. It is excellent and does present a good amount of info, making it a satisfying watch for Andrew, but it isn't likely to change your mind if it's already made up. As will be the case for the next month or so, the topic eventually turns to Alien Earth. The show is cruising along and continues to be excellent. We're diving deeper and deeper into what makes the hybrids tick and even getting to meet some new terrifying creatures, including an almost adorable baby xenomorph that conjures maybe the wrong images, a la Spaceballs! After that, it's full-on tangent time. Kevin talks about his Ozark journey and Andrew talks about his 2001 Battlestar Galactica rewatch with his fiancée. If you like when these two ramble on, then this section of the show is what you've been waiting for! As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Matt and Will discuss some new horror for you after a banner year for horror in 2024, 2025 is shaping up nicely.
How do the antagonistic forces in your story escalate distinctly from the protagonists' journey? We often struggle to develop the middle stages of a story. Could this be because we focus on our protagonists' journeys and plot structure more than on how the antagonistic powers are awakened, wronged, discovered, gathering strength and revealing themselves? In this episode, Chas and Stu are joined by professional screenwriter and playwright Kim Ho to explore how a generative story cycle (from tabletop role-playing game MOTHERSHIP) can be used to develop stories, not just write them better. This cycle is TOMBS: Transgression - Omens - Manifestation - Banishment - Slumber. Kim also contrasts this cycle with the Onset, Discovery, Confirmation, Confrontation cycle identified by horror philosopher Noel Carroll, as well as the philosophy of the FINAL DESTINATION franchise as analysed by The Morbid Zoo. By applying the TOMBS cycle to Ryan Coogler's amazing 2025 original feature SINNERS, we discover how focusing on the rising power of the various sources of antagonism can generate narrative fuel (and make your second Act sing); force your protagonists to Survive, Solve or Save (pick one); and how this escalation in antagonism can be mapped quite separately from your protagonists' character arcs. To prove that TOMBS does not just work for horror stories, we polled our patreons for which other genres to explore. Stay turned for our next episode where we apply the TOMBS cycle to thriller REBEL RIDGE and comedy classic MEET THE PARENTS. As always: SPOILERS ABOUND and all copyright material used under fair use for educational purposes. Available HERE. Blockbuster box office. Critical acclaim and Oscars recognition. From Get Out and M3GAN to The Substance and Sinners, the horror genre is enjoying a glorious–and gory–golden age. Screaming and Conjuring details the films and frights that led to this extraordinary renaissance, from the release of the groundbreaking Scream in 1996 to the arrival of 2013's The Conjuring, which spawned a multi-billion dollar franchise. Written by entertainment journalist Clark Collis (author of You've Got Red on You: How Shaun of the Dead Was Brought to Life), this exhaustively researched book is the first in-depth examination of a remarkably fertile and influential time for big screen horror. Wes Craven's Scream was followed by a flood of classic terror tales such as The Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense, Final Destination, The Others, Pan's Labyrinth, 28 Days Later, Resident Evil, Saw, Hostel, Paranormal Activity, and Insidious. This comprehensive history covers the often difficult and tortuous making of all these films (and many more), giving readers the exclusive lowdown on productions which were often as intense as the horrifying sights that ended up on screen. Screaming and Conjuring features recollections from a host of genre icons, including actors Jamie Lee Curtis and Neve Campbell, directors Eli Roth and Sam Raimi, and legendary makeup effects artist Greg Nicotero. The book also includes 200 production stills, film posters, and rarely seen images. Blood. Sweat. Tears. More blood. Clark Collis takes you behind the scenes, and the scares, with this fascinating history of the modern horror movie. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hello, and welcome to the inglorious return of Doomsday: History's Most Dangerous Mailbag Minisode! We've seen an awful lot of $@!# across time and space and it's only natural that you would have questions – so here is your chance hear them answered. Maybe learn something a little gross, maybe a little interesting. This is my chance to publicly answer some of the friendly, odd and occasionally gross questions that feed in through our various social media channels. I really wanted to get actual content to you ASAP after some recent tomfoolery with my health, and a Mailbag fit the bill nicely as a way to tide you over before the next full length episode. On this episode: I will answer which of the Final Destination deaths would be my personal preference and why; I'll explain if I'd rather ride out the apocalypse in an on-going Civil War or a Zombie Outbreak scenario – the answer may surprise you; and I'm going to definitively answer the question “will there be a new disaster moviesode, and if so, which one”. I'll even share my concept for a disaster screenplay so bold, the name is in all caps with an exclamation mark.I love answering your weird and bizarre questions. I wouldn't ask for them at the end of each episode if I didn't. If you're curious to hear my take on things rattling around upstairs, I'm already collecting questions for a 10th in the future so share away if you'd like to hear your thoughts expounded upon at length. Wells is riding high on the joy of low-stakes weekends while Brandi checks in from Hawaii, taking a much needed vacay. Your hosts dive into episode 5 of Bachelor in Paradise, where Faith arrives on a horse (iconic), Dale serves up some Chip ‘n Dale energy, and Jonathan somehow keeps getting chances he doesn't deserve. Nancy and Rizz-King Gary hit it off (was it the psychedelics?!), and Wells implants himself into BIP lore with an iconic one-liner (“you look like Toucan Sam on crystal meth”). He also makes a big pitch for bringing back the Boom Boom Room, because why not?? Meanwhile, your hosts have their weekly faves including big feelings on We Were Liars, Final Destination and The Phoencian Scheme. Wells also drops deets on his new Traitors podcast, and Brandi's gonna be in Miami for her next gig - the summer keeps summering! Till next week, YFT fam, we love ya.
