On this episode of the 30 Screams or Less podcast we review Caveat, the 2020 Shudder horror film written and directed by Damian McCarthy, starring Ben Caplan, Johnny French, and Leila Sykes. The movie follows Isaac, a drifter with partial memory loss who accepts a strange job watching a psychologically troubled woman in an abandoned house on an isolated island. What starts as a creepy slow-burn with strong atmosphere, sound design, and one nightmare-fuel rabbit toy quickly turns into a confusing mix of psychological thriller, supernatural horror, and mystery. In this spoiler-filled review, we break down the chained vest, Olga's crossbow, the dead woman in the wall, Moe's suspicious behavior, and why Caveat left us wondering if it was creepy, confusing, or both.We also compare it to Damian McCarthy's later films, including Oddity and Hokum, and discuss why those worked better for us.Watch Caveat now on Shudder, then listen to our full review.Sponsored By:

Following backlash on Reddit for our lack of preparation last week, we have instituted a professional course correction for Part 2 of our Summer 2026 Movie Preview: we watched the trailers this time, and we've mapped them into a highly scientific rating system ranging from "Must See" to "Go to Hell."This week, we dive into the upcoming cinematic landscape to debate whether Hugh Jackman is being grizzled-hero typecasted in The Death of Robin Hood, why Nate Bargatzi's new family comedy The Breadwinner is an antiquated disaster, why Pixar never seems to whiff when it comes to Toy Story, as well as Hokum, The Furious, and Leviticus.Along the way, Tom breaks down Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day, Tim pitches himself as a professional safe-cracking piano tuner, and we take massive detours into the theology of whether God has a soul, a plan to fix a brand-new Billy Joel statue in Oyster Bay, and why Wall Street refuses to call it "cryptocurrency" anymore. For full-length weekly bonus episodes check out the TCGTE Patreon!Like the show? Hey y'all! Our two-part Summer Horror series kicks off as Wickham and Ada dig into two of the year's most acclaimed scares: first, Curry Barker's "Obsession" (2026), a 95%-on-Rotten-Tomatoes "monkey's-paw nightmare" in which a shy music store employee uses a supernatural "One Wish Willow" novelty toy to make his crush fall in love with him, only for that affection to curdle into violent obsession and turn his dream into a nightmare; then, Damian McCarthy's haunted-hotel chiller "Hokum" (2026), where a novelist retreating to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents' ashes becomes consumed by tales of a witch haunting the honeymoon suite, as disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance force him to confront dark corners of his past. Two wildly different flavors of dread, one unmissable summer kickoff.

It's episode 305, and I don't know if you've noticed, but there are some oddballs walking around this place. Hokum (2026) finds American novelist Ohm Bauman on a pilgramage to scatter his parents' ashes in rural Ireland. Staying at an isolated hotel, he sinks into a depressive spiral, only to find renewed purpose when a member of staff goes missing. Will Ohm find them? Is the magic mushroom milk-drinking man in the woods responsible? And what's up with that honeymoon suite that's always locked...? Hokum proves divisive in HTS towers and is either great stuff or barely up to snuff, depending on who you believe. But after a touch of praising/berating, there's plenty of time left over to discuss unlikeable protagonists, haunted hotels, the importance of CCTV, Ohms Under The Hammer, curate's eggs and how best to exit a van at speed. Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: there are worse things than strangers out there yet. Next time, we're making a start on perhaps our last great unwatched horror franchise, with a revisit of Halloween (1978).

Things are getting weird this week on The Grave Plot Podcast. First up, we’ve got another helping of Real World Horror, where we discuss a Catholic exorcist who found himself in hot water after publicly suggesting that UFOs might actually be demons in disguise. Whether you believe in little green men, little red devils, or neither, it’s certainly one of the stranger stories we’ve covered lately. Then it’s time for Horror Business, where we strap on our proton packs for a brand new animated Ghostbusters series, venture back into the woods for yet another trip to visit the Blair Witch, and check out the latest from reunited power couple Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, who appear ready to unleash absolute chaos with their upcoming action-horror hybrid Onslaught. We also take a look at Colony, the new infection nightmare from the director of Train to Busan, before capping things off with perhaps the most bonkers premise of the week: a Christmas-themed horror-action movie featuring a family, a cult-like obsession with the holidays, and a rogue badass Santa Claus. Then it’s review time. First, we head to a remote cabin for Over Your Dead Body, a darkly comedic bloodbath starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving as a married couple whose romantic getaway goes spectacularly off the rails. After that, we venture into the misty Irish countryside with Hokum, the latest supernatural chiller from Oddity director Damian McCarthy, blending folklore, grief, and creeping dread into one unsettling package. Between murderous spouses and haunted legends, we’ve got plenty to dig into this week. So grab that special someone, bring ’em in tight, and settle in for another episode of The Grave Plot Podcast!

This episode sees the co-hosts diving into the mysteries and hauntings of The Bilberry Woods Hotel as Adam Scott's Ohm Bauman travels to Ireland to lay the ashes of his parents to rest and finds himself learning about a local witch name the Cailleach, a local witch who kidnaps children and leads them in chains on a tour through the underworld, where they are clawed by the souls of who live there. How is this connected to a bartender at the hotel that goes missing? Is the hotel haunted? And, what will Ohm discover that his past traumas will collide with the horror that's on display at The Bilberry Woods Hotel. It's a mystery worthy of exploring, much like this episode which looks into what is one of the best horror films of the year.

Two Chicks and a Horror Flick

Ireland. A haunted inn. A witch with a grudge. And one very unlucky writer who should have known better. This week, we are heading across the pond for another Damian McCarthy masterpiece, Hokum — the latest from the Irish filmmaker who gave us Caveat and Oddity and has apparently made it his personal mission to make sure we never sleep again. Adam Scott stars as Ohm Bauman, an author who travels to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents' ashes and ends up with way more than he bargained for. Because of course he does. We're breaking down the atmosphere, the folklore, the scares — and yes, we have thoughts. Movie Mike counts down his Top 10 Best and Worst Movies of the decade as we are well over halfway into 2026. He breaks down the scenes that have defined modern cinema, these top movie quotes and the most gut wrenching movie so far of the decade that still chokes him up to this day. On the flip side, Mike doesn’t hold back on the Worst Movies of the year, calling out superhero misfires and breaking down what went wrong with some of Hollywood’s weakest offerings of the decade and some of all-time. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about the new supernatural horror film Hokum starring Adam Scott. He plays a novelist who travels to a remote hotel to scatter his parents' ashes and is consumed by tales of a witch haunting the honeymoon suite. Mike shares whether he thinks it’s really the scariest movie of the year, the single frame that may have scarred him for life and why it feels like a modern day “Shining”. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about Super Troopers 3 which leads him to ask the question “what year are we living in???”. This time, the troopers try to bring down a new drug ring, while Farva's wildly over-the-top engagement to Thorny's sister spirals into chaos. Mike talks about the best 'Broken Lizard' movies, his top 5 Super Troopers Quotes and his most viral clip with the cast of the movie. New Episodes Every Monday!
