Synopsis Gemma is a mother and a dentist (the two hardest jobs of them all), living in her childhood home with her daughter Maya. When Gemma was a child she watched her mother battle with mental health and eventually kill herself by bashing her own head into the shower wall repeatedly. Why does Gemma continue to live in that house and use that shower? Cause the plot needs her to. After experiencing some insidious events, Gemma must protect her daughter as she tries to reconnect with her past. What happens next will shock you, but spoilers…it’s insidious. Review of Insidious: Out of the Further Insidious is a franchise that has been near and dear to my heart. It was one of the first horror movies I really got into as a teenager, probably because it was rated PG-13 and I was too young to buy my own rated R tickets. The first two are gems, the third is okay, and the fourth is so terrible I don’t even want to consider it a part of the franchise. Some studios would have let it die. But not Blumhouse. Blumhouse will NEVER let this franchise die. Insidious 5: The Red Door came out a few years ago, and you know what? I didn’t hate it. But now we get a 6th addition to the story, which is mostly disconnected from the story in the other films and follows its own path. The story is about as good as I expected from a 6th Insidious installment, and it was able to make some lore additions that I found fresh and interesting. If you are looking for a great movie, maybe go rewatch Obsession, Hokum, or the Backrooms. This movie is pretty alright, and I think that is all we can ask of another insidious movie.
So much better than we expected! Natalie Grace in Lee Cronin’s The Mummy (2026) ★★★★ The first half of 2026 certainly made a statement in the horror genre. Reverberations will be felt across Hollywood as studios reassess what constitutes a blockbuster. The recent critical success of Sinners, Weapons, and The Substance appears to be bearing fruit. The results may have led to a diverse slate of offerings for 2026, and it is reflected in the wide array of horror offerings so far this year. If variety is your preference, then you have been in luck, so far. The unimaginable financial and critical success of Obsession and Backrooms, particularly given their low cost, have re-written the horror producer’s playbook, and will have a lasting impact for years to come. The Scariest Things evaluated what we’ve seen so far, and have come back with a report card of our favorites. The Mid Major – Large Indie Productions: It will be interesting to do an autopsy of 2026’s horror fare when we do our year end assessment. This year’s crop has been notably light on mid-major productions so far. The roaring successes we’ve seen thus far have been from the deep indie filmmakers. Backrooms, Undertone, Hokum, and Obsession. All original titles, and produced for less than $5 million. These are not the type of films you would typically predict would be box office hits. But, they outperformed any reasonable expectation, particularly startling for Backrooms and Obsession, which will have cinema economists trying to figure out the alchemy. The Major Studios: There were only a few major studio franchise sequels this year. All of them capable, but none of them superseding their source material. Scream 7 did very well at the box office, but it failed to make a big impression. Evil Dead Burn was a very violent, very intense outing that didn’t connect in the way its predecessors have. Scary Movie also did well on its $30 million budget, earning $210 million, its long layoff didn’t hurt its popularity, despite the derivative humor. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was a hit with critics (including our own Liz Williams) but it’s turn from zombies may have hurt it in the box office, as it probably will not make its budget back. The notable big comeback was Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which gives horror fans hope that Universal has gotten their monsterverse back on track, and remembered how to deliver a vicious movie with a good story. The Festival Circuit: Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to get out to as many film festivals this year as we would have liked, but we still managed to review a lot of great small indie horror films. Our traditional rotation of SXSW, Overlook, Portland Horror, and Popcorn Frights all provided very interesting films from emerging filmmakers. Even the bigger festival this year were heavy on small indie productions, and there were a lot of good offerings. We didn’t discuss all of them in our Podcast, but you can review a lot of the movies we saw with links on the images below. There is an emerging trend of release schedules for many of the best independent horror films, relative to the festival circuit. Open at SXSW (Or sometimes Sundance), get some buzz, go to Overlook to validate the buzz, and then release in the early summer. It can be a big momentum builder. Last year it was The Ugly Stepsister (Oscar Nom), and Good Boy that were the big beneficiaries of that combination. This year it was Obsession, Hokum, and Leviticus. Sometimes Panic Fest will factor into the equation, depending on when runs relative to Overlook. Popcorn Frights still brought a massive catalogue for viewing, but this year was more reliant on reperatory films. Some of my favorite films this year were horror adjacent, and all of their streaming content was small indie productions. Our favorite local festival, The Portland Horror Film Festival had an unusually large amount of feature films, and the best part was that almost all of the directors participated in the festival. We were fortunate to get interviews with all of them. Check out our Podcasts for the interviews. It was a diverse group of films, and not a dud among them. What is Still Coming in 2026? Probably the most intriguing film still due out is a new take on Resident Evil by Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian and Weapons. This is a major tonal shift for Sony. No more Mia Jovovic or Paul W.S. Anderson. Video game translations are usually dubious, and the franchise squandered its potential. It became more superhero and less horror. However, Sony is gambling that with the right creator, it might revitalize the legacy, and Cregger may inject real scares into this franchise for the first time since the original. We shall see. The trailer looks great. Other Mommy, which arrives on October 9, has some incredibly disturbing visuals. Jessica Chastain stars, and Rob Savage (Host) directs. This uncanny-valley movie came late to my radar and is intriguing. Later this August, the Insidious franchise is issuing Insidious: Out of the Further. Lin Shaye returns, Leigh Whannell writes this, and it has a banger trailer. This franchise has maintained some of the scariest PG-13 fare, but the sequels have been a gradual decline in quality. We’ll see how this goes. Beware Boiúna might give us the Anaconda movie we wish we got earlier this year, and wipe the slate clean from the Jack Black/Paul Rudd disappointment. It’s R-rated, and features reliable scream queen Jessica Rothe, along with Logan Marshall-Green and Kiana Madeira in the Amazon. The trailer impressed me with the snake’s monstrousness. Another fascinating man-vs-nature survival tale is Whalefall, a terrifying concept in which a scuba diver is in jeopardy of being consumed by a sperm whale if the giant squid the whale has snagged doesn’t kill him first. Clayface will attempt to bridge the superhero and horror genres, which is no easy feat. Will it have enough horror for horror fans, and will it have enough fealty to the Batman universe to appeal to the comic book fans? Mike Flanagan wrote it, and it promises real R-rated body horror, so it could be very interesting. Lastly, Robert Eggers’ period piece Werwulf is getting the full Eggers treatment, in monochrome and as moody as you could possibly want. Hopefully it will get the stink of the Wolf Man out of our popcorn. Just give me a great transformation scene, please. Keep an eye out for It Ends, a festival darling from 2025 which is finally getting a limited release this year. It is a brilliant, if melancholy purgatory metaphor. If you enjoyed Backrooms, you should check this film out if you are lucky enough to have it showing in a theater near you. Of course, some smaller films will come out of the shadows and inevitably make our end-of-the-top-10 lists, but this is what we know so far. This week, we bounce from questionable kindergarten teaching techniques and a tour through old movies to a pile of upcoming sci-fi and superhero projects. Then, in Future or Now, AI gives hurricane forecasters a potentially huge advantage, NASA pulls off another bit of engineering wizardry to keep Voyager 2 alive, and the cast of The Pitt boldly goes where plenty of actors have gone before. Real Life Steven is officially over summer. Heat, summer schedules, summer in general—it's time to move on. Meanwhile, Ben has been watching OLD MOVIES, including Kindergarten Cop. Ben calls it an "exceptional film," but watching Arnold Schwarzenegger take control of a classroom in 2026 raises some questions. How would Detective John Kimble's teaching methods stack up against modern school employee safety training? How many policies would he violate before lunch? And perhaps most unsettling: just how old are all those kindergarteners today? That sends us down the inevitable road of examining an old movie through the lens of people who now have entirely too much experience with how schools actually operate. Steven also has a pile of upcoming genre television and movie news to talk about. Neuromancer is headed to Apple TV, while Blade Runner 2099 is coming as a limited series on Prime Video. San Diego Comic-Con also brought news about Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3, along with more X-Men casting news involving Cyclops, Emma Frost, Beast, and Professor X. Technically part of the larger Jumanji family, Zathura doesn't quite live up to its predecessor. It doesn't help that Dax Shepard's character has to exist in the shadow of Robin Williams, which leads to the assessment that Shepard comes across as "a block of wood" by comparison. Things get considerably darker with The Long Walk, based on Stephen King's novel originally published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym. Devon found the adaptation interesting and well done—but extremely bleak. That conversation somehow takes a detour through Time Runner before eventually landing on Hokum and its supernatural layer. Future or Now AI Gets Better at Predicting Hurricanes Ben brings us a potentially enormous development in weather forecasting. Google DeepMind's WeatherNext AI system has demonstrated an ability to improve hurricane forecasts, potentially giving forecasters and emergency planners an additional day of warning. The system predicts both storm tracks and intensity and can rapidly generate thousands of possible scenarios. During Hurricane Melissa, it reportedly identified major intensification earlier than conventional forecasting models. That's potentially life-saving extra time for communities preparing for a major storm. But there's an interesting wrinkle: like many sophisticated AI systems, exactly how the model reaches some of its conclusions isn't always clear to the scientists using it. That makes WeatherNext another fascinating example of AI producing useful results while simultaneously raising questions about how much we need to understand a system before we're comfortable relying on it. And despite the improvement in modeling, humans aren't leaving the process. Meteorologists still have to interpret the information, communicate uncertainty, and turn forecasts into useful warnings for the public. In an operation nicknamed the "Big Bang," engineers simultaneously shut down power-hungry hardware and transitioned to lower-power alternatives while carefully keeping the spacecraft warm enough to survive. Voyager's dwindling power supply has forced NASA to make increasingly difficult decisions about which systems can remain operational, making every additional bit of usable energy precious. It's another remarkable chapter in a mission launched in 1977 that is still returning scientific data from interstellar space. Liam discusses the film Infinity Buffet, and Justin talks about the films This Is Not A Test, Hokum, Disclosure Day, and some of the films he watched for the Chattanooga Film Festival. Up first is Lady Stay Dead. We talk largely about how unpleasant we found the film to be, mostly since it felt interested mostly in being cruel and shocking and not so much in telling some kind of story. We compare the sexual assault scenes to other famous horror films that use such a tactic, and how the film has the unsettling tendency to sexualize such things instead of portraying them as acts of violence. Liam points out the film somehow is the worst at this amongst ‘80s horror films, and not only is it edgy for the sake of edgy it's also not particularly good at it. We talk about how the film seems unable to make the antagonist a real believable threat, and how the film lacks the sense of catharsis most rape revenge films have so the violence comes off as completely pointless. Liam talks about how the film can't decide if the antagonist is developmentally challenged or just an asshole, as well as the idea that this film isn't really “the nastiest of the nasty” because it's just a weak example of that phenomenon. Up next is Don't Go In The Woods. We talk about how the poster might be familiar to horror fans even if they haven't seen the movie. Justin talks about how the film might the archetypical slasher film and unlike the previous film in the episode is compelling and interesting. Liam talks about how it's interesting that the film takes its time in revealing the killer, and possibly uses Bigfoot as a red herring before revealing the killer as a strange hippy Viking. Justin talks about one of the more striking and eerie scenes in the film that was more the result of a low budget than any actual artistic choice. We discuss how even though the previous film had a much higher production value, this film feels like it's being made by someone who cares and that shines through. We talk about the ending and how it feels way heavier than it has any right to be. Hokum (2026) finds American novelist Ohm Bauman on a pilgramage to scatter his parents' ashes in rural Ireland. Staying at an isolated hotel, he sinks into a depressive spiral, only to find renewed purpose when a member of staff goes missing. Will Ohm find them? Is the magic mushroom milk-drinking man in the woods responsible? And what's up with that honeymoon suite that's always locked...? Hokum proves divisive in HTS towers and is either great stuff or barely up to snuff, depending on who you believe. But after a touch of praising/berating, there's plenty of time left over to discuss unlikeable protagonists, haunted hotels, the importance of CCTV, Ohms Under The Hammer, curate's eggs and how best to exit a van at speed. Whatever happens, one thing's for sure: there are worse things than strangers out there yet. Next time, we're making a start on perhaps our last great unwatched horror franchise, with a revisit of Halloween (1978).
