The sign out front says Saloon but we've been told Georgetown's Marco Polo is actually a Bar & Grill. We like the sound of saloon better but we won't turn away from a good bar. And grill reminds us to not miss the famous broasted chicken at Marco Polo. Is it a lounge or a tavern? Either way, North City Lounge & Grill in the heart of Shoreline is one great dive bar. Some patrons call it a tavern, some bartenders call it a lounge, and we call it the crown jewel of Shoreline's North City neighborhood. Not technically in Seattle, we give Engel's Pub in Edmonds a pass since it's darn close to Seattle and it's hometown to our own resident historian Brad Holden. We pretend to be locals and venture back to old stomping grounds for a visit to Sully's Snowgoose Tavern in Phinney Ridge. An eclectic mix of beer styles, Bavarian architectures, and old Seattle history, Sully's has all the charm of a classic dive bar with the added bonus of a fantastic tap list. Not one but two nitros, and not one but two genuine classic German beers on tap sets Sully's apart from the riffraff. Nothing anchors a neighborhood like a good dive bar, and Hatti's Hat has been a staple in Ballard since 1904. Booze, gambling, and...soft drinks? Sure. Like a few dive bars we visited in season 2, Hattie's Hat has an epic mural painted by a famous local artist. But this mural's got a crazy story behind it and we're more than happy to embellish that story on air. Definitely no trash-talking the classic Brunswick bar because that thing is just plain awesome. Recorded at the Waterwheel Lounge in Ballard. We're hanging outside in the patio, where it's crazy smoky and hazy from scary Northwest wildfires. Not good, but at least we're at an awesome dive bar and washing down the smoky haze with some tasty beverages. Beyond the salacious history of Waterwheel, we get into the bizarre blue laws that popped up after prohibition (along with a shameless book plug). We get into the history, the booze, the tall tales, and especially the music. The Central also claims to be the birth place of Grunge music so of course we gotta unpack that. Our old favorite segments Where We At and Whatcha Drinkin' make their season debut, and we lay the groundwork for an epic 4-episode series of Seattle's oldest dive bars. Buckle up! Recorded live at Slim's Last Chance Chili Shack & Watering Hole in historic Georgetown. Since this is the final episode of the season, we reminisce about all the awesome dive bars we've visited over the last few months. Plus a sneak peek of great content coming next season! It's super loud around here but we still riff and jive over beers while the bachelorette party rages in the background. Once the house band Billy Joe Show starts jammin' we gotta wrap it up so we can down some kick-ass chili. Tried-and-true segments of Whatcha Drinkin' and Where We At are present with hearty discussions about the Georgetown and SoDo districts. Recorded live in a dark corner of Streamline Tavern in lower Queen Anne. Unlike the typical dive bars we frequent, poor Streamline Tavern has been the victim of more crimes than they've perpetrated. Plenty of comical stories of thwarted stickups and cat burglar safe-cracking, with plenty of booze. If that wasn't enough, Streamline also got kicked out of their original home by international gentrification. Instead of typical Whatcha Drinkin' we ramble on about has-been concerts, Big Wheels, and The Seattle Center. Keepin' it real and live at The Shanty Tavern in historic Lake City. Bothell Way begets Victory Way begets Lake City Way, and the old Mac's Shanty honky-tonk roadhouse from 1934 begets the current Shanty Tavern. Cold beer, live music, and great times...but only on Fridays. Even better than a history rundown of this classic dive bar, current owner John Spaccarotelli and his daughter Dana join us and provide a rich chronicle of the tavern and the neighborhood - John's run the joint for over 60 years! Is there still a prohibition-era bootlegger escape tunnel underneath the Shanty? Who knows. Well, John knows but he aint no stooly. Recorded live at Targy's Tavern in upper Queen Anne, where monocles and top-hats rule. The hills around here are so steep you'll need...horses. Targy's opened in 1934 which is the "golden year" of dive bars in Seattle. We barely get through the door before the staff threatens to beat us up. Okay not really but the history of Targy's pretty much defines dive bar lore with stories of rowdy barkeeps, illegal gambling, and i-drink-alone debauchery. Whatcha Drinkin segment includes a bit of whatcha eatin because we sneaked in a pizza. Beer, pizza, and bougie chrome draught handles. Recorded live at Eastlake Zoo Tavern with absolutely no view of a lake so don't ask. And don't you dare call it billiards since this is a snooker table, bitch. Plus an Iron Maiden pinball machine thrown in for good measure and some epic graffiti. Mad bartender skills come shining though with the Whatcha Drinkin segment, complete with uppity 50/50 beer concoctions. The Where We At segment goes deep into the amazing decor, accoutrements on display, and dilapidated houseboats. Unfortunately we don't quite crack open "the chest." Recorded live at Darrell's Tavern on so-seedy-we-love-it Aurora Ave. Darrell's embraces the dive bar ethos and proclaims it's "where your dad used to drink." None of our dads used to drink here but they totally should have. Only cool dads drink here. For this episode, we get the owner Dan to come tell us all about the history of Darrell's and the evolution from music venue (a piano bar!), to mafia hangout, back around to music venue with live local acts. We barely get a word in edgewise, and Dan sets the stage - see what we did there? - for epic Satan's Pilgrims music. We go true-crime drama when we dive into the salacious history of Duchess Tavern. Felonies! Intrigue! Crooked Cops! And high stakes pool games. Recorded live at Duchess Tavern in Ravenna where belligerent Huskies and an occasional mass murderer are known to hang out. But don't even think about loitering around here if you're not willing to join the Beer Hunter club. "Whatcha drinkin?" gets into the epic beer selection at the bar and what's required to get your Beer Hunter trucker cap. Lou hacks into the jukebox to judge every music patron from the past decade. Oh, and The Beatles. Hey! This isn't a dive bar! Yes, it's true - we veer away from our normal dive bar hangouts and head to the Pike Pub around the corner from Seattle's famous Pike Place Market. This classy establishment is home to not only the great Pike Brewery, but also it's founder Charles Finkel. Charles chats with us about beer, wine, the local microbrew scene, and international booze history. A can't-miss episode if you're even remotely interested in how that awesome craft beer you're swilling came into existence. And be sure to check out the Facebook and Instagram pages for pictures of the Pike Pub's fascinating NW beer history museum. Recorded live at The Sloop Tavern in historic Ballard, a stone's throw from the Ballard Locks. But more importantly, a stone's throw from Lake Union and a couple more stones' throw from Lake Washington where the famous Sloop Tavern Yacht Club races, cruises, pirates, and meets at The Sloop afterwards for a few pints. For unknown reasons none of us order a Slooper-sized 34 oz. beer. But we do ramble on about "Whatcha drinkin?" and "Whatcha got?" And we go deep with "Where we at?" since we're in historic Ballard and if you ain't been here then you should get yer ass down here. Also, skeletons, pinball, and Lou getting chastised by the bartender (on a hot mic!). Recorded live at Blue Moon bar in the University District. Blue Moon describes itself as Seattle's most infamous dive bar, and this historic tavern doesn't disappoint. This longtime UW watering hole let us in after-hours while setting up for a post-COVID-lockdown reopening. If you listen real close, you can hear the faint sound of customers being kicked out! Includes staples "Whatcha drinkin?" and an extended "Whatcha got?" segment where we dive into the awesome-even-by-Seattle-standards selection of craft beers on draft and the brand spankin' new row of tap handles. Recorded live at The Cabin in Richmond Beach, Shoreline. Built in 1927 and opened as a bar in 1933, this historic tiny tavern served longshoremen and lumber mill workers for decades. Steadily sinking and settling over the years, The Cabin now has a quirky tilt that gives this local watering hole a whole lot of charm. This episode features the ubiquitous "Whatcha drinkin?" and "Whatch got?" segments plus two special guests! Recorded live at Woody's Bar on Aurora. Formerly Echo Lake Tavern, formerly Joe's Tavern, and formerly Melby's Tavern on Echo Lake (circa 1933). A favorite historic bar in the equally historic triangle-shaped building on a site that used to be the main entrance to Echo Lake. Includes timeless classic podcast segments such as "Whatcha drinkin?" and new-fangled segments such as "Whatcha got?" This episode also discusses - for the first time - the concept of "Where we at?" and "Who the f*ck are you?"
