For the first time, The Opportunity Collective has a returning guest! We are fortunate that it is one with such grace, kindness, and compassion as Kimberly Phinney.A year ago, Kimberly was getting her community of faithful creatives, The Way Back To Ourselves, rolling. Our communities are “brother and sister” communities. Both communities build on the idea that creatives or creators are better off collaborating than competing with one another.Since we last talked with Kimberly, she has seen more pain and even more grace in her life. She even wrote a book that she never expected to write! Of Wings and Dirt is a collection of poems chronicling Kimberly's time going through mental and physical illness.Kimberly is a wife, mother, teacher, writer, artist, creative coach, and mental health counselor. She is also a dear friend, and I know every member of The Opportunity Collective would love to get to know her.Opportunities that Kimberly wants to share with you!Kimberly and The Way Back To Ourselves community are hosting a creative arts retreat called The Cultivate Retreat from June 22-23 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. There are only 11 spots left for the in-person retreat, but several spots are left for the virtual ticket. Kimberly also offers writing, editing, and creative coaching services. I can personally vouch for her editing, as she has helped me find my voice on several writing projects. How can you help Kimberly and The Way Back To Ourselves? I'm glad you asked… Kimberly is looking for help with her podcast production. Like many creatives (myself included), podcast editing is one of the less fun aspects of hosting a podcast. CN Rail signed a deal to purchase Iowa Northern Railway. The Iowa Northern operates 275 miles of track that connects to CN's U.S. rail network. David Przednowek, the Assistant Vice President of Grain for CN Rail, says they are very excited about the transaction as Iowa Northern is a great rail property with a very heavy agricultural focus. The United Kingdom announced the suspension of talks after Canada decided not to extend two temporary trade measures – a special quota on U.K. cheese exports, which expired in December 2023, and country-of-origin rules on products being exported, which is set to expire at the end of March. Those measures were in place since Britain left the European Union. Canadian Cattle Association President Nathan Phinney said the other major issue revolves around Canadian beef. The U.K. doesn't allow hormone-treated beef and pork imports from Canada but is able to export approximately 40,000 tons of beef to Canada annually. Phinney says he wasn't surprised by the UK's move and discusses Canada's next step.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We pretend to be locals and venture back to old stomping grounds for a visit to Sully's Snowgoose Tavern in Phinney Ridge. An eclectic mix of beer styles, Bavarian architectures, and old Seattle history, Sully's has all the charm of a classic dive bar with the added bonus of a fantastic tap list. Not one but two nitros, and not one but two genuine classic German beers on tap sets Sully's apart from the riffraff. If it wasn't confusing already, Sully's throws in Guiness draft and a huge Ireland football scarf behind the bar. Pie jousting fans won't want to miss this episode. Find show notes here. What happens when your dream is sidelined by the realities of life in a broken world? Kimberly Phinney had a vision for her future as a writer with big hopes, dreams, and ideas she wanted to share with the world. Even as a child she had a sense that this would be her path. While on that journey life got in the way, fear stepped in, and she started playing small, keeping her artistry close to the chest. When her health took a turn for the worse it seemed all of her dreams might be lost. Suffering infertility, miscarriages, and stage 4 endometriosis, she also lost the ability to walk. She's endured multiple surgeries, including one that almost took her life due to sepsis and post-surgical complications. We don't ever seek out the pain, suffering, or weakness that ends up impacting our dreams so deeply. Even still, it finds us and presents us with an opportunity to respond in faith and trust for our heavenly Father, even while we're still asking, “Why?” Kimberly's story isn't over. It's not tied up with a beautiful bow. She's not fully recovered. But she's fighting for her dream and the ways God might use her in it, despite and even because of her weakness. In this episode, you'll learn: Kimberly's 3-step process for staying true to the dreams God has given you (her students rave about this year after year!) What God has taught her in her brokenness (and the breakthrough that awaits in such seasons) About letting go of anything that's going to detract from God's vision for you. Taylor Phinney was a prototype of the wonder-kid generation. In his teens, he had already competed at the Olympic Games, won rainbow jerseys and signed a pro contract. Through his early 20s, Phinney claimed a number of high-profile wins at the UCI World Tour level including the prologue of the 2012 Giro d'Italia. After a brutal crash in 2014, Phinney reconsidered his sporting trajectory. After bowing out officially in 2019 to pursue art, Phinney has given us an interesting canvas to work with on today's installment of the ‘WTF Happened To' series. Old-Fashioned Football welcomes the head distiller from Savage and Cooke, Dylan Carney, on their first all-whiskey podcast. Savage and Cooke, located in Vallejo, California, is owned by Dave Phinney. Phinney, the previous owner of Prisoner Wines, now owns Savage and Cooke Distillery. Savage And Cooke Distillery's Head Distiller Dylan Carney | Old-Fashioned Football (Ep. 36) The hosts and Dylan touch on a lot of different subjects including Dylan's background and path to where he is today, the uniqueness of their product, and even a great lesson on Absinthe. Dylan brings a wealth of knowledge in whiskey and distilling and shares a ton of great information with the hosts. After answering the hosts' questions, Dylan leads them through a tasting of four of Savage and Cooke's products. They start with the Second Glance, their American Whiskey, which has notes of sweetness and a really nice finish. They then move to Lip Service, their Rye Whiskey, which almost has a thicker texture the hosts notice as Dylan explains the mash bill. Then Dylan and the hosts move to Burning Chair, their Bourbon. Of these three, Miranda and Justin have different favorites but agree that all three products are excellent. To close the tasting, the group moves to Savage and Cooke's newest ready-to-drink product, The Manhattan Project. Dylan explains a little about the market research the team did, as well as what they were hoping to accomplish. The hosts are blown away by this one, feeling like they've just ordered a drink at a good cocktail bar. Last, the hosts ask Dylan some listener questions as they close out their discussion. Dylan provided Old-Fashioned Football with tons of good information as well as some good laughs. Make sure you check out the distillery at their website, in Vallejo, CA, or at the links below. To make up for yet another extended hiatus, Dan and Sam slapped together a real barnbuster of an episode for the hogs. Return guest Barto (@ElBartoArmy) joined us for a wide-ranging discussion of ongoing hog happenings. We began on a more somber note, with a brief tribute to the king Gilbert Gottfried and desperate musings about our diseased, violent society in the wake of the unthinkable shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Luckily, we were able to lighten it up with Dan's unwittingly encountering a GOP Congressman's interminable speech, Seth Green's stolen Bored Ape NFT, and the chaotic Havana Syndrome episode of Law & Order. Be sure to stick around to the end for Jack, our Resident Soulsborne expert, who joined us to help Sam rip apart tech dingus Elon Musk's atrocious Elden Ring build.
