In the latest episode of the Total Bases Podcast, hostsFelipe and James dive into the happenings of the Baseball Life Fantasy Baseball League Draft, providing listeners with a recap of the event. This highly involved league format operates on a semi-weekly basis, featuring head-to-head matchups within a 12x12 categories framework. Most notably, this unique setupincludes statistics like holds and the strikeout-to-walk (K:BB) ratio for pitchers, as well as on-base percentage, doubles, and triples for hitters, just to name a few stats used for the league's scoring system, adding depth and complexity to team compositions. This year's draft maintained its traditional slow-draftformat, allowing team owners ample time to strategize their selections. A critical facet of the league is the retention of three keepers from previous seasons, which fosters a sense of continuity and long-term planning. Additionally, teams have the opportunity to safeguard up to five qualifyingminor league players, placing them in designated slots, which encourages owners to invest in future talent while navigating the competitive landscape of the league. Felipe and James break down the strategies employed during the draft, offering insights that resonate with both seasoned fantasy players and newcomers alike, making this episode a must-listen for baseball both real and fantasy baseball fans alike.
In this episode of the Total Bases Podcast, Felipe is accompanied by Robert and Dave as they provide live commentary on this year's 2025 Mardi Gras Madness Fantasy Baseball League. The Mardi Gras Madness is a head-to-head, weekly points keeper league. This year's edition included an extended draft due to the reduction in the number of keepers from five to three per team, with an optional two minor league players placed in protected roster slots.During the draft selections, participants discussed their strategies and analyzed the likely approaches of other league members. A significant observation was that a high number of hitters were retained before the draft, providing many opportunities for teams to enhance their pitching staffs. The participants carefully weighed the value of various pitchers available, considering factors like past performance, injury history, and potential for breakout seasons.Additionally, participants compared fast, live drafts and slow drafts, noting that each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. Fast drafts are known for their intensity and require quick decision-making skills, while slow drafts allow for a more thoughtful and strategic approach as managers have more time to deliberate on their picks.Throughout the podcast, Felipe, Robert, and Dave shared their insights on the evolving strategies within the league and offered predictions for the upcoming season. They discussed notable players and emerging talents who could make a significant impact. The episode concluded with a recap of the draft highlights and expectations, promising an exciting season ahead for all fantasy baseball members involved in the Mardi Gras Madness league.

A lot of the talk centered around Harry's 1st round pick of Jalen Brunson, however. With Jayson Tatum already on the team (as his keeper player), the show talks about the possibility of drafting Anthony Edwards or Tyerese Haliburton instead.
Felipe is joined by James as they recapped the annual Basketball Life Fantasy Basketball Draft. This year, all teams got to keep one player from their roster entering this year's draft. The guys shared the picks that they liked, did not like, and why they hated drafting in the backend of the draft this season, as both participants experienced an unusual amount of "sniping" that took place in this year's draft.

Felipe is joined by Angel this week to discuss the happenings of the Baseball Life Fantasy Baseball League as the guys shared what went right, what went wrong, and how to move forward in preparation to get ready for 2025 fantasy baseball drafts. The guys also took a look at the league-wide trends in baseball and try to answer the question that has been a central theme of this year's podcast season: did the 2023 rule changes actually work? The show then continued a discussion that stemmed from the Baseball Life Facebook group about Luis Arraez and the popular notion that "old school" baseball can still be an effective way to produce in modern baseball, but is Arraez the blueprint for other high-contact players to follow? Or is he just an anomaly (the only .300 hitter with less than 10 homeruns)? On the other hand, a player with similar skillset, saw improvements in terms of the analytical statistics and saw a breakout year in Arraez's teammate, Jurickson Profar. The guys also get into a deep discussion about finding the balance between their real life while maintaining their fantasy baseball teams.
Melvin of the Baseball Cosmos Facebook page joins Felipe to discuss all the things that went right and wrong en route to his first fantasy baseball championship in the Total Bases Podcast Fantasy Baseball League. The guys also share their frustration on the Chicago Cubs underachieving this year and are resigned to the fact that this will be the new norm for the next 10 years because of Jackson Chourio and the Milwaukee Brewers. They also try to figure out why the modern baseball player seems to be more fragile than their predecessor, which led to talks about the pros and cons of using Tony Gwynn to compare Luis Arraez. Other discussions include the joys of meshing of "real" and fantasy baseball and why it's no longer frowned upon like it used to before as they transition into talking about the retirement of Adrian Wojnarowski as he gets set to be the GM of St. Bonaventure's basketball program, which led the guys to name other examples of baseball writers who gave up their sportswriting gigs for a chance to work in MLB front offices.
Felipe talks about a few surprises and disappointments from this past 2024 Major League Baseball season as he spotlights a few hitters who have played well above expectations (like Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox) and hitters who have been huge letdowns this season (the Chicago Cubs' Dansby Swanson for example). The show ends with Felipe trying to figure out these players' draft value for 2025 fantasy baseball drafts.
Felipe is joined by Derek and Doug as they live-react the annual Auto Draft Kings' fantasy football draft as Felipe takes a break from the playoff hunts in his baseball league to once again try his luck with football. Meanwhile, Felipe did something he has not done in any of his mock or real drafts: selecting a quarterback in the single-digit rounds (Kyler Murray). Felipe looks at more under-the-radar players deep into the fantasy baseball waiver wire as he once again looks at players who are owned in less than 50% of CBS Sports Fantasy Baseball leagues. We discussed two hitters, two starting pitchers, and two relievers. Hitter #1 was a former, can't-miss-prospect who is carving out his own niche as a veteran player Hitter #2 is a flashy defensive rookie with a promising hit tool. Starting Pitcher #1 is a young, former first-round pick who has a fairly easy schedule coming up Starting Pitcher #2 is trying to make a case that he's more than just a relief pitcher, but only has an arsenal of two pitches Reliever #1 is getting all the save opportunities for an up-and-coming young team. Reliever #2 is racking up the holds and should probably be picked up immediately in holds leagues.
