Watch Off the Bench Presented by UDF with Chatterbox Sports Monday-Friday 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. LIVE on the Chatterbox Sports YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE to the channel to ensure you never miss a thing. Chase Burns, the Cincinnati Reds' highly touted pitching prospect, is set to make his much-anticipated professional debut in a Spring Training game against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. Selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Wake Forest, Burns has quickly become a cornerstone of the Reds' future plans, boasting a triple-digit fastball and a slider widely regarded as one of the best in the prospect ranks. While this debut won't be televised, fans can still follow along via Statcast data, offering a glimpse into the 22-year-old's electric arsenal as he takes the mound for the first time in a Reds uniform. Burns' journey to this moment has been marked by dominance and deliberate preparation. At Wake Forest, he led college baseball with 191 strikeouts in 100 innings during the 2024 season, earning ACC Pitcher of the Year honors and cementing his status as a top draft talent. His fastball, which can touch 102 mph with exceptional vertical break, pairs devastatingly with a slider that features late, tight movement—attributes that have scouts projecting him as a future ace. After being drafted, the Reds opted to hold him out of minor league action in 2024, instead focusing on instructional league work to ensure he was primed for a full 2025 campaign. This approach mirrors the development path of fellow Wake Forest alum Rhett Lowder, who debuted for the Reds in 2024 just over a year after being drafted. For the Reds, Burns represents a critical piece in their ongoing effort to build a competitive rotation. With young arms like Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, and Lowder already in the mix, Burns' arrival could elevate Cincinnati's pitching staff to elite status. His debut comes at a pivotal time as the Reds aim to rebound from a middling 2024 season and push toward contention under new manager Terry Francona. While Spring Training stats are unofficial, this outing will offer an early look at how Burns' stuff translates against professional hitters, including those from a Rangers squad featuring starter Tyler Mahle. Though Burns is unlikely to break camp with the big-league club, a strong spring could accelerate his timeline to the majors. Reds fans, eager for a glimpse of their top prospect, will be watching closely as he takes his first step toward what many hope will be a transformative career in Cincinnati.

Fantasy Baseball Live – December 1, 2024Segment 1 – News and Notes1.The Dodgers have been busy.a.They signed Blake Snell to a 5-year, $182 million deal with $62 million deferred. This model appears to be the Dodgers' signature as they kick the financial ball down the road. i.The Dodgers appear to want a star at each position and a rotation of #1 starters. The obvious problem here is the health of these starters. Thoughts?b.The Dodgers also extend Tommy Edman, signing him to a 5-year, $74 million extension. Once again, money is deferred – a third, in this case, $25MM.i.If the deferred strategy is working, why aren't other teams joining in?c.Should MLB step in against this strategy or just let teams continue to push their liabilities to a later date?d.If the deferred strategy is working, why aren't other teams joining in?i.Should MLB intervene against this strategy or let teams continue to postpone their liabilities?2.Down the road, the Angels sign Yusei Kikuchi to a three-year, $63 million (nothing deferred). Kikuchi has always had great stuff, and with his two months with the Astros, they finally unlocked something. The data shows a pitch mix change to focus more on his slider. a.Let's cut to the chase...will the Angels find some way to turn him back into the old Kikuchi?b.His ADP is 142, and he's going as an early #3 starter. Interested?i.Who would you rather have game?Segment 2 – Fantasy Questions of the NL East – Phillies and Nationals1.Philadelphia Philliesa.Bryce Harper is going off the board at #21 and Trea Turner at #24. Who are you more worried about returning their draft value, and why?b.JT. Realmuto had a down season with 14 home runs, 2 SB, and a .266 BA. At 34, is this the beginning of the downward slope or can he have one more 20+ HR season with a few more stolen bases?i.Statcast data seems to suggest there is still something in the tankc. If Johan Rojas remains the starting centerfielder, is this a player you find interesting at the draft table? Early NFBC drafts are not buying it as he's going as the 656 player off the boardd.Ranger Suarez posted a 2.76 ERA in the first half and somewhat imploded in the second half with a 5.65 ERA. Granted, he only pitched 36 innings in the second because of some injuries. Are you going to bet more on the first half or take a pass. He's the 104th pitcher off the board. Let's call him a #5 starter. Are you interested?e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)2.Washington Nationalsa.James Wood early in the fourth round or Dylan Crews in the 10th round. Who would you rather have?i.James Wood 2025 stat line – HR, SB, and BAii.Dylan Crews 2025 stat line – HR, SB, and BAb.One of my guys is Jose Tena. However, he's getting next to zero love in early drafts. His ADP is 513. Am I out to lunch here? He hit the ball very hard, with 91.2 average exit velocity and 71st percentile in sprint speed. Granted, he loves to swing the pole and rarely walks, but the fantasy tools seem alluring. c.Is this the year that Juan Yepez finally gets a ton of playing time? He's an afterthought in early drafts with an ADP of 605. Any interest?d.Who besides MacKenzie Gore interest you at the draft table from the Nats list of starting pitchers?e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)3.Final Questiona.Who wins the NL East and how many playoff teams will there be?Segment 3 – Fantasy Questions of the AL East – Baltimore and Boston1.Baltimore Oriolesa.Jackson Holliday – 2025 stat line: AB, HR, SB, and BAi.He's going off the board as the 17th-second baseman. We will determine who you'd rather haveb.Colton Cowser hit 24 home runs and stole nine bases. The data looks great on him. Are you looking for more this season? If so, how much more?i.His ADP is 162 or the 37th outfielder off the board. Does that feel about right or are you going to jump the line?c.Grayson Rodriguez is going as a late #2 or early #3 starter. His stuff looks great, but is this too high based on his lack of an MLB history?d.Felix Bautista should be back, and early drafters are excited. He's going as the number six closer off the board. Too risky, or do you take the gamble?e.Trevor Rogers is free (665 ADP). Is he worth a gamble in Draft-and-Hold Leagues?f.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)

Fred Zinkie and Jeff Erickson try to find 2024 comps to the 2023 First Half / Second Half heroes and bums. Who is this year's Julio Rodriguez Who will be the young slugger that figures it out, like Tristan Casas was last season? --- 00:00 - First Half / Second Half Podcast 01:30 - Who is this year's Tristan Casas? A young slugger who has a blah first half and then breaks out in second half. 02:10 - Micheal Busch. He was always powerful in the Minors (59 HR in 2022-23). Outside of May, has hit for average (albeit with a high BABIP). The power will play eventually. With the Cubs out of the race (kind of), he will play. 05:45 - Who will be this year's Julio Rodriguez? An underwhelming star who gets on track in the second half. 08:20 - Alternate - Pete Alonso. His HR/FB% is a career low. Average exit velocity if down, but only slightly. Warm weather, Mets hanging around in the race….I'll say that he hits more than 20 HR after the ASB. 14:45 - Who will be this year's Cal Raleigh? A catcher who becomes a game-changer by hitting for elite power in the second half. Mitch Garver. Has quietly his 6 homers since June 6. May not hit for average, but he producing plenty of fly balls. K rate and BB rate each improved a bit in June too. 19:15 - Who will be this year's CJ Abrams? A player who catches fire on the basepaths in the second half. 19:50 - Wyatt Langford. Ranks 11th in baseball in average sprint speed. Stole six bases in June. Rangers fall out of the race and let Langford learn to steal bases in the second half by running as much as he wants. 23:45 - Who will be this year's Alex Verdugo or Nolan Arenado? A veteran who falls apart in the second half. 25:45 - Cody Bellinger. I know his first half wasn't great, but Statcast suggests it should have been even worse. Cubs fall out of the race and he's unplayable in the second half. 33:40 - Who will be this year's Freddy Peralta? A skilled starter who underachieves in the first half and thrives in the second half. 34:15 - Pablo Lopez. Similar to Peralta, he pitches for a solid team and has great SO skills. Just needs some decent luck. 40:15 - Who will be this year's Lucas Giolito? A starter who is playable in the first half and destroys teams in the second half. 41:05 - Jose Berrios. This may be cheating, because it has already happened, but I'm not sure anyone has noticed. His season-long numbers (3.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) still say, “start me every week”. The Jays season is already over, and things will be ugly for starters like Berrios when they go with a full youth movement down the stretch. 44:40 - Andrew Abbott 46:45 - Who will be this year's Adbert Alzolay? A reliever who takes hold of the closer's role in the second half. 47:20 - Jeff Hoffman. Holy moly, this guy has been good this year. The Phillies went a long stretch without a save, and since that ended he has collected 3 of their 4 saves. He's their best reliever and could completely take the job from Jose Alvarado. Of course, they could trade for a closer. But they don't need to. 49:30 - Monday game recaps: Is Paul Sewald close to losing the closer's role? --- Home Run Forecast Home Run Forecast is offering a special for the start of the baseball season. Intro: What does a good throwing motion look like? Velocity: Conversation must starting at Ground Zero Baseball America: The moment a baseball leaves a pitcher's hand, it starts to slow down because of drag. The 100 mph pitch could be measured at 100 mph ( pitcher's hand), 99 mph (50 ft.), 94 mph (midway) or 91 mph (crosses plate). The first radar guns that began appearing at ballparks in the late 1970s and early 1980s measured pitches crossing the plate. The Speedgun, measured closer to the plate than the JUGS gun. The Speedgun was known as the “slow gun” the JUGS gun registered faster readings, was the “fast gun.” The Stalker came out in the early 1990s, measured velocity closer to the pitcher's release point than the JUGS gun, JUGS become the slow gun. A 90 mph pitch on a Speedgun could register at 92 on a JUGS gun and 93-94 mph on a Stalker. The tech improved, 94 mph on the Stalker Pro registered as 95 on the Stalker Pro II. So when you read of 85-90 mph fastballs from the early 1980s, realize they would register much faster with current measurement tech. An 85 mph fastball (if registered by a Speedgun at the plate) would be roughly 93 mph if measured by Statcast out of the pitcher's hand. Bill James: Grandfather of Sabermetrics When I joined the Red Sox in late 2002 and started sitting in the scout seats, there were two styles of guns that the scouts used, so that you would look to your right and the scout there would have a reading of 94, and then you would look to your left and the scout would have a reading of 91. So you would look to see whether it was a JUGS gun or the other one, Well, the scouts unified around the faster guns within a year or so. Ten years later, this happened AGAIN; the guns got faster again. They got faster readings because they were picking the balls up sooner, closer to the pitcher's hand. The Athletic: Velocity: Moving the Goal Post There is some debate about what the fastest fastball to date has been. In the documentary Fastball, filmmakers looked at a few key moments from the past. Nolan Ryan was clocked at 100.8 mph by a radar gun in 1974. If you convert Ryan's number to the out-of-the-hand methodology used to measure pitch speed today, you get 108 mph. For some, that counts as the fastest pitch on record. We've been tracking major-league pitchers with the same quality of technology since 2007, though, and nobody has thrown harder than Aroldis Chapman and his 105.8 mph fastball in 2010. So Ryan's 108 would be a large departure from 15 years of tracking pitches — and, for what it's worth, it's a large departure from radar gun readings over the rest of his game that day, as well as the rest of his career, which usually topped out around 96 and 97 mph. Also went on to say the readinga back then were inconsistent, they varied Louis Gil: Anatomy of a MLB Hurler Phenom rocked in 2nd straight start 45 BB 99 K's Career 10-4 3.33 “He's always cared,” Chapman said. “He's always wanted to be good. Willing to learn and work and try to find ways to become better. That's all we can ask out of any player. Luis exemplifies it.” By the end of that season, Gil was promoted to High-A Tampa. Fresh off being hired as the organization's director of pitching, Sam Briend watched Gil pitch and quickly thought, “That's what a major league pitcher is supposed to look like.” “That's when you get excited about what the ceiling can be, what this kid could do in New York when all of those things start to click,” Instead of trying to work on those things at Triple-A on the doorstep of the majors, Gil had all the time in the world to focus on them alongside his rehab and developed his changeup from scratch. It began with classroom sessions at the club's player development complex in Tampa, going over information and building the foundation for what was to come, then adding layers once he could actually throw. “Guys like knowing there's something wrong and something they can attack [during the rehab process], because it's motivating,” Briend said. Gil had a solid April before taking off in May, thanks to some tweaks to his delivery. He racked up seven straight starts in which he threw at least six innings and gave up no more than one run, the longest streak in Yankees history. Rodon In a span of three starts, Carlos Rodon's ERA has inflated from 2.93 to 4.42, Over his last three starts, he has been clobbered for 21 runs,on 28 hits across 13 ²/₃ innings. Much of the damage has come against his fastball. Rodon pointed to a lack of command with the pitch Cole By the end of his night, Cole's fastball averaged 95.4 mph — up from the 95 mph it averaged in his season debut, still down from his 96.7 average last season. Wade Miley TJ "I don't know how long it's been messed up. I can't take you to a pitch, can't take you to a moment. It just is what it is.” Injuries are nothing new for Miley, who's landed on the injured list nine times in the 11 seasons but this marks just the second time he's been sidelined by an elbow injury and the first time that he'll need to undergo surgery. Miley's injury is just the latest blow to a pitching staff "There's a limit to depth," Murphy said. "We've lost a lot of guys this year. By my count, nine of our top 16 pitchers are out so we're having to fill in with guys who we had no idea would be in the big leagues and that's a challenge but at the same time, it's a great opportunity.” The rash of injuries could also result in a first call-up for Robert Gasser. The Brewers' No. 5 prospect made his season debut last week with Triple-A Nashville, Dodgers: Supporting their $700mm investment The Dodgers have multiple areas of need as the Trade Deadline approaches, but rotation help has emerged as an unexpected key item on the team's want list. With health having been an issue for nearly every starter this season, Los Angeles is reportedly interested in White Sox ace Garrett Crochet as a remedy What are they selling, more importantly who are they selling Vladimir Guerrero Jr has enjoyed a resurgent 2024 season, posting a 131 weighted runs created plus (wRC+) — 100 is considered league average — with 1.3 wins above replacement (WAR), which is tied for fifth on the team. On the latest episode of The Mets Pod presented by Tri-State Cadillac, Connor Rogers and Joe DeMayo take stock of the Mets offense, bullpen, and the fate of the season. The guys recap a week where the offense got better, the bullpen got worse, and the Mets continued to barely tread water. Connor and Joe discuss the underperformance of veterans, how the Mets need a strong June to convince the front office not to sell everything in July, the woes of the bullpen, a huge opportunity for Mark Vientos moving forward, and the hopes tied to the return of Francisco Alvarez. The show then does a Mailbag version of Down on the Farm, with questions answered about Mets minor league affiliates in cold-weather locations, pitching prospects Mike Vasil and Dom Hamel, plus lesser-known names Stanley Consuegra and Jack Wenninger. The month of May has once again been a bit unkind to the Atlanta Braves, who seem like they are winning games in spite of their offense at the moment. Of course, the pitching staff has been pitching in more than its fair share to make it happen. Grant McAuley discussed the latest Braves news from the week that was, including some encouraging signs for Matt Olson at the plate, but a discouraging injury update for Austin Riley that seems to have the third baseman in limbo as far as a return. You'll hear Riley's comments from Saturday as he described the ailment that has him stuck on the bench for the time being. Meanwhile, Travis d'Arnaud also had a brush with injury but appears to have emerged unscathed while Sean Murphy's return to could be getting closer with an upcoming rehab assignment. Ronald Acuña Jr. is among those still searching for consistency and results, so did a day off help speed that process up? You'll also hear from Atlanta reliever Jesse Chavez, who shares some insight on the inner workings of the bullpen. And we'll discuss the latest Players Only telecast on Bally Sports South with Brian McCann and Jeff Francoeur, who reflect on their friendship and the chance to reunite on the 20th anniversary of their rookie season. Special guest Russell Dorsey of Yahoo Sports joins the show to discuss the state of the Toronto Blue Jays, a club that once seemed destined to become a powerhouse, but is now staring at the possibility that their homegrown stars are not only under-performing but could also bolt in free agency. David Adler of MLB.com checks in to share the inner workings of Statcast's new bat-tracking metrics, from concept to the first iteration which debuted this past week. This latest evolution allows us to take a deeper look at how the swing works and who has the most explosive swing in MLB. For the longest time in baseball we have had some of the most detailed pitching metrics thanks to Major League Baseball's Statcast technology, but now we are privy to a little more in-depth information in how hitters swing and make contact thanks to the newly released data and updated tech at ballparks.Jake Mintz & Jordan Shusterman discuss and explain what these new metrics are and how they will be useful for teams, writers and even fans in evaluating players. With the use of bat speed, swing length, squared up rate, sweet spot percentage and blast rate, you'll now be able to tell if certain hitters are battling an injury, if they're changing their approach depending on the count or if a team has an overall developed hitting philosophy, just to name a few, because of these stats. Also on this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, the guys get into the success of the Philadelphia Phillies and how despite battling through some adversity, they've become the first team in baseball to 30 wins. Where has the powerful Atlanta Braves offense gone? The past couple of weeks have produced very different results than anyone has been accustomed to. How soon can they turn things around? Grant McAuley discusses the week that was for the Braves and the power outage that has spread through the batting order and proven costly in some one-run losses on the recently completed 1-5 road trip. Meanwhile, Atlanta's pitching is carrying the team for now, but a key reliever landed on the IL this week. How will the Braves bullpen adjust to at least a couple of weeks without Pierce Johnson? Speaking of adjustments, Eno Sarris of The Athletic and host of the Rates & Barrels podcast joins the show to discuss the factors that have led to Ronald Acuña's slow start and how soon we can expect an adjustment that could get the former MVP back on track. In our trip around the big leagues, the Marlins reminded the baseball world just who they are and what they're about with an early May trade, Nike was finally forced to make necessary changes to the MLB uniforms, superstar Mike Trout was sidelined by another injury and the Twins are throwing the biggest sausage party in baseball. Mike Petriello of MLB.com checks in to share some insight and Statcast data that proves Ted Williams was indeed a great hitter. So, maybe we already knew that, but the research into Williams' legendary "red seat" home run was fascinating and Mike will share that story and his finding on the show. From The Diamond airs live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays from 5-7 pm ET. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
