Major League Baseball series to determine which team will represent the National League in the World Series

Let's remember Baseball Talk Radio's first live podcast with Rich Baxter, Gary Mack and Ed Kasputis as we prepared for Game 6 of the 2016 National League Championship Series. Will it be the Dodgers or the Cubs headed to Cleveland for the 112th edition of the Fall Classic?
Originally aired October 2023. Brian Wright (MLB.com, New York Mets All-Time All-Stars, Mets in 10s) joins Thomas Emerick to resurface this NL East showdown in the 1997 National League Championship Series between the Atlanta Braves and the recently non-existent Florida Marlins. We got Liván Hernández, Greg Maddux, and a big strike zone for left-handed hitters. Hear why this was the most shocking league championship series round to that point, when quantifying via the betting markets for every series since they started playing this round back in 1969 — No. 1 by a mile. In the time since, only 2010 tops it. Even this year's underdogs heading to the World Series in the Texas Ranger and Arizona Diamondbacks didn't knock off nearly as big of favorites in terms of combined odds, as with Florida toppling Atlanta and Cleveland upsetting Baltimore one riveting week back in '97. And it really starts rolling Sunday in Miami with Game 5. This is Remember That Game, the podcast about sporting events that take you on a journey and maybe chart the path of the zeitgeist. I'm your host Thomas Emerick, enjoy the show. Did we give up after falling down three games to one in the National League Championship Series? Don't feel compelled to answer that. The important thing is the Mets won Game Five, the NCLS extends to a sixth game, and Greg and Jeff are filled with hope. Mets fans couldn't ask to be filled with much more.
According to new data, New York City recorded a dip in overdose deaths last year for the first time since 2018. Plus, the Mets take on the LA Dodgers Thursday night in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series. And finally, New York Comic Con kicks off Thursday. WNYC's Michael Hill talks with a Bronx teacher and two of her students about how they use comics in the classroom.
This episode of The FAN Morning Show with Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning opens talking Maple Leafs and debating if any one on the team stands out as the team's proverbial “whipping boy” this season. Next, the duo pivot and revisit yesterday's postseason baseball action alongside MLB Network's Jon Morosi. He shares what he's seen so far in the American and National League Championship Series: how Mets fans are feeling, the Dodgers' surprising Game 3 blowout win, and if the Guardians stand a chance as the series shifts to Cleveland down 0-2. Later, Ben and Brent get back to some puck talk and bring back a show favourite, NHL Network's Jason Demers (26:55). The former NHL defenceman weighs in on Colorado's early struggles and when it becomes "must-win" territory, before looking at the value of Maple Leafs' regular season and how much is at stake come playoff time; is a long run or bust?! SERIES 3 EPISODE 49: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Oh my God is this perfect. Kamala Harris doing an interview on Fox with Bret Baier tomorrow night pushes ALL the fascist buttons, all at once, and she ESPECIALLY pushes the one button that proves, as Chrissy Teigen tweeted and Rep. Maxwell Frost got entered into a Congressional hearing, that Trump remains a "P.A.B." Can you IMAGINE Trump sitting down to be interviewed by Maddow, or for God's sakes even Andrea Mitchell. Or the Meidas Network guys. Or me? It is not only enraging Trump now, not just tomorrow, but for the rest of the campaign. Every moment. He cannot stop it. He cannot stop his own insanity, he cannot hope to contain it; there is an excellent chance it will literally push him fully over the edge and he will start dropping n-words. Trump only found out in late afternoon and promptly lost it. He attacked Fox as ‘weak and soft”, he called Baier “Fair and balanced” and meant it as an insult. On TOP of which, Trump had already been raging about Fox letting liberals on its network. Now there is a chance that even the Washington Post and New York Times political reporters will skip whatever D-C cocktail party they were going to go to Wednesday night in hopes of getting into Politico's “Spotted” column and start asking the Trump mouthpieces and the Republicans why if SHE can go on Fox, he can't go on MSNBC. Or Washington Post Live. Or a New York Times cocktail party. This also, I think, finally puts a stake through the she's-not-doing-interviews canard, and transforms that entire issue into a journalistic bidding war. If you're wondering if Baier might trip up Harris - worry more about Harris tripping up Baier. Madame Vice President? Ask HIM some questions. Ask HIM where Fox is, covering the guys who joined Lara Trump's boat parade while flying Trump Flags and Nazi Flags with swastikas on them. Ask HIM where Fox is covering Trump's obvious mental decline and whether he's had a stroke or a tumor. Ask HIM where Fox is about Trump saying the military should be deployed against his enemies, and at the election three weeks from now. Ask HIM where Fox is covering Trump's promise to invoke a law that lets him imprison or expel ALL Hispanics in this country based only on race. Or ALL African-Americans. Or ALL German-Irish-Americans named Baier. PLUS: Now we know why Trump has been forced to do the stupidest thing possible, eight days before the election: spend a vital campaign day in New York, a state he cannot win. He is hosting a high-end fundraiser. If you're trading campaign time for campaign funds this late - you're losing. B-Block (22:14) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: A hospital in the UK's National Health Service is now renting out wheelchairs £2 an hour. Hockey's Ottawa Senators failed to give away the Zamboni-Shaped Gravy Boats they promised yesterday. How is Canada supposed to put gravy on the biscuit it just put in the basket? And hi I'm David McCormick I'm running for the Senate from Pennsylvania and I am NOT actually from Connecticut. See me rooting for the Philadelphia Steelers? C-Block (33:42) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: After the Mets tied up the National League Championship Series yesterday it means we still have the chance of another Mets-Yankees all-New York World Series. So while it's still a possibility, let me tell you how I wound up on the periphery of the biggest moment of the last one, in 2000, when Roger Clemens threw Mike Piazza's broken bat at him (if you're a Mets fan) or he didn't (if you're a Yankees fan) or how he actually threw it straight at me (if you were me, reporting for Fox from the camera well next to the dugout). Also why Mike Piazza threatened to sue me over it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

October 15, 1988 - With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Kirk Gibson hits a pinch-hit home run off Dennis Eckersley to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5 - 4 victory over the Oakland Athletics in Game One of the World Series. Gibson, who injured himself making a game saving catch in the National League Championship Series, never came out for game one introductions and never took batting practice spending the entire game on the trainer's table receiving treatment with Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda checking on him between innings. Inning after inning, Lasorda checked and was given the thumbs down each time until the bottom of the ninth with the A's leading 4-3 when the clubhouse boy told Lasorda that Gibson wanted to speak to him. ”I think I can hit for you, Skipper” was the message Lasorda heard when he arrived in the trainer's room. Eckersley got the first 2 batters out. Alfredo Griffin was next up when Lasorda sent Mike Davis to the plate instead, with Gibson warming up unbeknownst to anyone. As Eck settled in to pitch, Lasorda sent Dave Anderson to the on deck circle.Eckersley took notice and decided he wasn't going to let Davis hit it out of the ballpark. He worked the count to 3-2 and walked Davis. “Now get out there Big Boy” Lasorda ordered Gibson, whose appearance sent the crowd into a frenzy. Lasorda decided Gibson had two swings to try and hit it out of the park and then he gave Davis the green light to steal 2nd. With 1st base open, the A's chose not to walk Gibson who worked the count to 3-2 andGibson launched the next pitch out of the park. Vin Scully's call of the play say's it all “"In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!"October 15, 1970 - For the third time, the Baltimore Orioles overcome a 3 - 0 deficit to bury the Cincinnati Reds, 9 - 3, and win the World Series in five games. Brooks Robinson won the World Series Most Valuable Player Award hitting .429 and breaking the record for total bases with seventeen. Robinsons stellar fielding earned him the nickname “Hoover”.

The bases were loaded. Mark Vientos was up. Then the bases were unloaded and the Mets were soon on their way to tying the National League Championship Series at one game apiece. Sound familiar? A Mets fan could get used to clutch postseason grand slams when not squirming uncomfortably while crossing fingers, toes and everything else that a sizable lead doesn't shrink, let alone vanish. The emotional whirlwind is all part of the rich tapestry of October baseball that continues to make for a month like few others in Mets history. Greg and Jeff come up for air long enough to savor it before going back to alternately high-fiving and worrying their heads off.

Jim is joined by former Wrigley Field employee and friend of the pod Jim Licato, to break down the hall of fame candidacy of former Chicago Cubs first baseman Mark Grace. First, they discuss Grace's elite hitting ability and his consistency at the plate and in the field during the 1990s (5:08). Next, they cover the 1989 National League Championship Series, how far back in history you have to go to find a light slugging first baseman that was inducted into the HOF, and whether the fact Grace led the 1990s in hits AND doubles is properly celebrated (10:20). Finally, they try and rank Grace among the top first baseman of his era (31:29), before making a final on whether or not Grace deserves to be inducted into Cooperstown (50:28).
Chris Burke played six seasons in the major leagues, the majority of which were spent with the Houston Astros. In his second season, he delivered arguably one of the most memorable moments in Astros history — a walk-off home run in the 18th inning of Game 4 of the 2005 National League Division Series, defeating the Atlanta Braves and sending the Astros to the National League Championship Series. The Astros defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS and reached the World Series for the first time in franchise history. He spent the final two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres, then had brief stints with the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds on minor league contracts before deciding to retire. It was in the final chapter of his career when he developed a heart for coaching and mentoring, and he did so for a number of years at the youth level. He now works as a college baseball analyst for the SEC Network and co-hosts the "Coach Me Up" Podcast with ESPN college basketball analyst and former coach Jimmy Dykes. "Get in the Game" is part of the Sports Spectrum Podcast Network. RELATED PODCASTS:— Trevor Rosenthal – MLB Pitcher— Josh Lindblom – Former Pro Baseball Player— Geoff Blum – Former Major Leaguer
SERIES 2 EPISODE 133: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: What happens if the Supreme Court – I'm sorry – Trump's newest Super-PAC, John Roberts, Treasurer – takes the next step and not only listens to his shroom-high concept of “presidential immunity” late next month in order to stall his trials – but actually CREATES “presidential immunity.” What ACTUALLY happens TO this country, AT that exact moment? I still do think the STALL is the POINT; not granting all presidents immunity from all prosecutions for all time. But again, the stall itself raises the question: exactly what the hell do I know? But let me present this grim silver lining in the form of a rhetorical question. You think about it, I'll think about it. I'll address it at length at the start of the new week: What happens to the nature of this country – what happens to the nature of our government – what happens to the nature of the presidency, if the Supreme Court actually rules no president can be prosecuted for official acts? What happens THAT instant? And combine that with not a rhetorical question but a simple factual one. The day the Supreme Court effectively turns the President of the United States into a King… WHO will BE president of the United States? And could Jack Smith's response to the SCOTUS prosecutorial and electoral interference actually be to indict Ginni Thomas and present John Roberts with an insoluble crisis inside his whorehouse? Plus I don't entirely trust the source, but there is startling polling suggesting the Democrats can turn immigration and border security from their biggest liability to a plus-seven in polling by simply making a big deal out of all the immigration and border security compromises they already agreed to - and acting on whatever they can. B-Block (16:32) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: A good time to bring you his brilliant array of political commentary disguised as fables with birds and bears in them. And a Peacelike Mongoose. C-Block (31:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: To conclude Baseball Spring Training Week, I am still startled that the game was once so important that a rival guy went on a rival Los Angeles newscast and insisted that though they had just lost the National League Championship Series, the Dodgers were obligated to...go to a judge and get a court order to play in the World Series anyway!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the final hour, Dan Bernstein, Laurence Holmes and Leila Rahimi were joined by Sun-Times writer Jason Lieser to preview the Bears-Chargers game Sunday and to discuss what Chicago's offensive game plan will look like with rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent under center once again. Westwood One football analyst Mike Golic then joined the show to preview the Bears-Chargers matchup as well. Golic also discussed Bagent's performance in his first NFL start last Sunday, the uncertainty surrounding quarterback Justin Fields' future with the Bears and more. Later, Bernstein, Holmes and Rahimi reacted to a video montage of Phillies fans ranting about the team's loss to the Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series.
Brian Wright (MLB.com, New York Mets All-Time All-Stars, Mets in 10s) joins Thomas Emerick to resurface this NL East showdown in the 1997 National League Championship Series between the Atlanta Braves and the recently non-existent Florida Marlins. We got Liván Hernández, Greg Maddox, and a big strike zone for left-handed hitters. Hour 1 GoJo and Golic, dive into... [01:11] - Thursday Night Football: Jaguars vs. Saints GoJo and Golic react to the Thursday Night Football game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New Orleans Saints. The Jaguars secured a 31-24 victory, with Trevor Lawrence leading his team in rushing. The Saints' defense was unprepared for Lawrence's mobility after his high ankle sprain, and their offense struggled to make key plays. The Jaguars now hold a 5-2 record and sit atop the AFC South. Before the break, GoJo and Golic discuss the investigation surrounding Jim Harbaugh and the University of Michigan for in-person sign-stealing. [19:50] - Michigan Sign-Stealing Scandal The conversation regarding the Michigan sign-stealing scandal continues as GoJo asks his dad for his perspective on whether this information changes how they view Michigan's recent success as a football program. Since sign stealing isn't illegal in college football, the Golics debate how harmful Michigan's actions are versus how many college football programs are doing the same thing but have yet to get caught. [29:39] - MLB Postseason and Outdoor Chair Cushion Woes GoJo, Golic, and Jessie shift their focus to the MLB postseason. They discuss Dusty Baker's Astros evening up the ALCS against the Texas Rangers and the Philadelphia Phillies' offensive struggles, allowing the Diamondbacks to make a comeback in the National League Championship Series. Following the baseball talk, Golic shares humorous anecdotes about the challenges of having too many outdoor chair cushions in his Arizona home. [39:32] - Former Defensive Line Ball Hawk Terrell Suggs joins the show! Baltimore Ravens legend Terrell Suggs joins the show ahead of his induction into the Ravens Ring of Honor. He shares his insights on playing with other Ravens legends and what it was like practicing with Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. Terrell delves into the origins of "Ball So Hard University," discusses how he would fare in today's game with numerous mobile quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and holds out hope for becoming a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer. The Philadelphia 76'ers season is almost upon us! And yes, while some are a bit lackluster (including us) about the success this team will have this coming season, we still needed to get into some of the dominant storylines as the 2023-2024 NBA season is around the corner. Tom West from LibertyBallers.com joined us for our season preview. It was a fun discussion, which then led to our Sixers season predictions. But first, we talked about how this Eagles team faltered against the New York Jets, and how they need to rebound down the road. (approx. 3:20)We then dove into the Phillies successes within the National League Championship Series and how this NLCS is looking. (approx. 8:10)What we threw down on the Table this week was a fantastic discussion with Tom West from Liberty Ballers to preview this upcoming 76'ers season! What kind of positives and negatives will we see from head coach Nick Nurse? What might Joel Embiid's load management look like? Can Tyrese Maxey develop more defensively? Then, the guys gave their Sixers predictions for this upcoming season. All of this and much more this week on the Table! Sid Bream etched his name into the annals of Major League Baseball history with one of the sport's most iconic plays. He lived out every child's dream, sliding into home during a tied game in the bottom of the 9th inning, propelling his team to the World Series. And now, on a special episode of the Shadows Podcast, Sid joins us on the "Road to the World Series." During the podcast, Sid shares insights into his formative years in Pennsylvania, reflecting on the valuable traits and characteristics he inherited from his parents. He delves into the significance of his father, who once harbored dreams of a major league career, witnessing his son's draft to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sid also sheds light on his time in Pittsburgh and the circumstances that led to his trade from the Pirates to the Braves. Furthermore, Sid takes us on a journey back to what many consider the greatest World Series ever, the 1991 clash between the Atlanta Braves and the Minnesota Twins. However, it's Game 7 of the 1992 National League Championship Series against his former team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, that Sid is best known for. He recounts the historic slide and the aftermath, including receiving death threats and his complex relationship with fans in Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Dr. Philip Vinson, an economist at Georgia Gwinnett College, believes that raising interest rates is effective in addressing inflation, even if it doesn't immediately lower prices. Instead, it aims to reduce the rate of price increases. While inflation has dropped from its peak of 9% to around 3.2%, it remains above the Fed's 2% target. Further rate hikes could risk pushing the economy into a recession, impacting business growth, employment, housing, and the stock market.
