Ryan gave his latest on what he's hearing about 2 weeks out from the draft. He thinks Shedeur Sanders would be an easy choice for the Steelers at 21st overall if he does fall, but he said Kenneth Grant would be a safer bet to be the better player. Ryan told the guys how things have been impacted for Shedeur with his father being Deion Sanders. Ryan talked about players falling in past drafts. Could the Steelers be looking at a safety in the 1st round? The guys asked Ryan about a few WR prospects. The best-case-scenario 21st overall pick for Ryan would be Walter Nolen or Kenneth Grant. Episode 90: Welcome to episode 90 of the podcast! In this episode, I dive into what the Cubs need to do to turn their 83-win season into a playoff-contending 90-win team. I explore the concept of 90 wins as a target—something Craig Counsell and Jameson Taillon have both referenced—and how it almost always gets teams into the playoffs. I also reflect on what went right and wrong with the Cubs last season, Jed Hoyer's comments, and how they need to be more aggressive this offseason. Key topics include: Why aiming for 90 wins is crucial for the Cubs' future. The importance of exceeding expectations and how it played out in Cubs' history, from Sandberg's MVP season in '84 to Kerry Wood's breakout in '98. Why the Cubs need to be more aggressive in adding talent—be it through trades, free agency, or even internal development. Evaluating Jed Hoyer's cautious approach and whether it's time for a shift in strategy. Potential offseason moves, including big names like Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes, and how the Cubs can still improve their roster depth. It's time for the Cubs to aim higher, raise the bar, and make bold moves to build a championship contender. Enjoy the episode, and let's get ready for an exciting offseason ahead! 5-20 Full Joe Starkey Show! The Show begins with a Starkey Rant. The time for the Pirates is right now, Joe says. The magic between Jared Jones and Paul Skenes only happens once, just ask the Cubs how Mark Prior and Kerry Wood went. The pieces are there, but they cannot be sellers. Joe goes over some players that could be available the Pirates may possibly target. The guys agree they need to add a bat. The topic shifts to Paul Skenes' start against the Cubs and how many strikeouts he had. Joe compares Skenes to Sidney Crosby. We take some phone calls about the Pirates and what they should do trade wise, is Derek Shelton the guy, and what will happen with their bullpen? Would Pete Alonso make sense for the Pirates as a pure rental? We move on to the horrific call on Saturday that cost the Pirates the game. The ball came loose after the tag and after the umpires reviewed the play, it stood. A discussion of instant replay, Dan Zangrilli joins the show really quickly to try and explain the call and what he has heard from the Pirates and their lack of protest after the game. We listen to Derek Shelton's explanation about the play at the plate and somehow we are even more confused after. Mark Stepnoski joins the show, a former Super Bowl Champion and Pitt Panther. A Bob Pompeani Showdown! Continuing the Bob Pompeani Showdown! Wrapping up the show. Joe asks a question about who has the most touchdowns before the age of 28.

Baseball is back! Spring training cactus (and grapefruit!) leagues are in full swing, and the sports community is all abuzz with prognostications for the upcoming season. Pop quiz, dear listener! Shohei Ohtani. Bryce Harper. Kerry Wood. Jose Canseco. Chris Sale. What do they have in common? They're all Major League Baseball players, and they all (in addition to over 1,000 other MLB players) underwent Tommy John ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) surgery. Until the last 10 years or so, orthopedic surgeons performed Tommy John/UCL reconstruction surgery almost exclusively on professional baseball pitchers. However, with increased specialization of younger athletes, and increased demands on young athletes' throwing arms, the rate of UCL elbow injuries has skyrocketed. Young athletes aged 17-22 are the most common group receiving this surgery. Why?? Is blowing out your UCL "inevitable" in an overhead athlete? What factors come into play that increase risk of UCL tears? Can we prevent these injuries? How?? Thankfully we have brought our friend and colleague, and baseball injury specialist, Nikhil Verma, MD, to tease out everything "Tommy John"! Dr. Verma is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, specializing in sports medicine, and has worked at Midwest Orthopaedics at RUSH since 2004. He is currently the head team physician for the Chicago White Sox (since 2017, taking over for one of our former guests, Dr. Chuck Bush Joseph), and is the director of the Sports Medicine division and is Program Director for the sports medicine surgical fellowship at RUSH. He has robust research and academic presence, with tons of publications under his belt, and he is an associate editor for the Arthroscopy Journal, and on the editorial board for the Journal of Knee Surgery. He is a member of numerous academic societies in orthopedics, sports medicine, and Major League Baseball. He also has been elected by his peers to “Best Doctors in America” every year since 2007, which is quite fitting as he is a wonderful human being and beloved colleague :) He also recorded this episode with Your Doctor Friends while driving in his car on the way to the airport to fly out to Spring Training in Arizona to help out his beloved White Sox, now that's dedication! Resources for today's episode include: Dr. Verma's MOR website, his professional website, and his Instagram page! A 2016 article in The Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine (featuring Dr. Verma as a collaborating author) titled "Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction: The Rush Experience". Felipe is joined by Harry of the Wrestling Purest Podcast as he returns to Fantasy Baseball after a 20-year absence. Aside from showing Harry the ropes and wax nostalgically about Kerry Wood and Mark Prior, the guys also talked about the New York Yankees' roster and discuss some of the good things and bad things with the ballclub. They also talked about the catching position coming into the 2024 baseball season and why selecting a catcher is much like picking a tight end in fantasy football (Adley Rutschman is the Travis Kelce of baseball!). The show ends with Felipe sharing some of his favorite "sleeper" players at starting pitcher.
The booing of the late Jerry Krause by Chicago Bulls fans during last Friday's Ring of Honor ceremony made national headlines. But it also spurred a re-examination of Krause's role in the franchise's dynasty era and elicited defenses by many who recognize the role that the late GM played in the six titles. Kevin Kaduk, Mark Carman, Kacy Standohar and Lawrence Benedetto are joined by Bulls historian Jack Silverstein to wonder if that's the last time we'll see Krause's name booed in the United Center. The Athletic's Jon Greenberg discusses the interviews he did for the 20th anniversary oral history he wrote on the 2003 Cubs. Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Dusty Baker, E-ramis Ramirez, Jim Hendry, Gabor Bako, Eric Karros, Shawn Estes and more (all the stars) talked about their fond and not so fond memories of that season that was really great until it wasn't. Find out which ex-Cubs dodged his calls, and how he ended up with enough stuff for three columns with a fourth yet to come. Find out how he sleuthed an email address for one of the most in-demand characters in the entire saga. Jon theorizes that Steve Bartman was, and probably still is, a loyal reader of Desipio/Pointless Exercise. They also talk about an event earlier that season that foreshadowed the way it all ended. All that and much more. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/desipio/message

On May 6, 1998, Chicago Cubs rookie Kerry Wood took the mound at Wrigley Field for his fifth career start. As the 20-year-old Texan mowed down an Astros Lineup with the Killer Bs of Bagwell, Bell and Biggio, red and blue K signs tracked his efforts out in the left field bleachers. That day, Tom Bujnowski, a middle school P.E. teacher, brought his original broken bat K signs to The Friendly Confines for the first time ever. By the end of the game, Wood had tied the Major League record for most strikeouts in a game, and Bujnowski's K signs would be featured in highlights of the game for the next 20+ years. It is probably the most infuriating season in Cubs history (and that's saying something with this bunch). The Cubs patched almost all of their holes from the year before when they gagged away a pennant, and the fans were manic from the first game on. Greggie came home, the Cubs stole Derrek Lee, added Todd Walker for some reason and traded for the dumbest catcher they could find. Mark Prior and Kerry Wood got hurt, again, Big Z was still just a kid and tried to drag them to the finish line. Sweaty Joe broke, Ryan Dempster's Tommy John Disease went into remission and he showed up late in the season to make things worse. Kent Mercker and Steve Stone got in three different verbal slap fights. The Cubs did do a trade and got Nomar! Sammy sneezed his back off, Todd Hollandsworth crippled himself with a foul ball, Andy Pratt threw very few strikes, LaTroy melted down repeatedly, Corey Patterson kept getting put back into the leadoff spot, and wait until you hear how much Jose Macias played down the stretch. Just so much...Dusty. You think you remember all of the bad stuff from the 2004 Cubs, but, you don't. Buckle up for two and a half hours of catharsis. It's a helluva lot easier to handle now thanks to 2016. -- If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537) (IL/IN/LA/MI/NJ/PA/WV/WY), 1-800-NEXTSTEP (AZ), 1-800-522-4700 (CO/NH), 888-789-7777/visit http://ccpg.org/chat (CT), 1-800-BETS OFF (IA), 877-8-HOPENY/text HOPENY (467369) (NY), visit OPGR.org (OR), call/text TN REDLINE 1-800-889-9789 (TN), or 1-888-532-3500 (VA). 21+ (18+ NH/WY). The Dusty Baker era ended with a big wet thud as a promising start ended abruptly when Rafael Furcal careened into Derrek Lee and broke his wrist. Mark Prior pitched his final games for the Cubs. Kerry Wood's career as a starting pitcher ended. Phil Nevin traded himself. Greg Maddux got Scott Boras to trade him. Michael Barrett punched AJ Pierzynski in the face. Key relievers on the division championship teams the next two seasons were wallowing in the rotation. The Cubs somehow thought adding Juan Pierre and Jock Jones was a good idea. The team was a mess, lost 96 games and Dusty reminded us all that he didn't get fired, dude. But he also didn't come back. All that, and much more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message
On Wednesday Bally Sports Atlanta Braves Broadcaster Chip Caray joined Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael from the Braves' team bus on the way to the third and final game of the series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The conversation started off by recapping the Braves 6-3 win over the Phillies last night led by a strong start from Spencer Strider. “Well let me start with body size – Billy Wagner, I mean he (Spencer Strider) is built just like Billy,” Caray responded when asked who Spencer Strider reminded him of. “But as far as strikeout stuff and power, fastballs and sliders I mean it's Kerry Wood. He (Strider) reminds me an awful lot of Kerry,” Caray added. After the win last night Strider is 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA, 120 K's and a 1.02 WHIP. You can listen to Andy & Randy Monday-Friday from 10a-2p
