BREAKING PEWS Guillermo Del Toro directing Pacific Rim 2 for 2017. Anodizing issue will make iPhone 6 launch scarce. Chassis manufacturer Catcher Tech screwed up, sourcing bad material which makes the metal and plastic connection points bad. They are three months behind. Microsoft will pay for your Surface Pro 3 if you give them a Macbook Air Max trade-in value of $650 Twitter now supports GIFs! Community renewed for a sixth season by Yahoo 13 episodes coming this fall exclusively on Yahoo Screen New episodes of The Magic School Bus coming to Netflix in 2016 That show is awesome. TECH REVIEW Ion Block Rocker Good: Great sound, long battery life (75 hours), am/fm for when you just NEED to listen to a radio station, bluetooth connections, and includes a mic for when you feel the need to get your karaoke on. Bad: No USB play, but they do have two USB ports to charge your devices. FINAL RATING: 5 PEWS KEEPIN’ IT REEL Transformers: Age of Extinction, Paramount Pictures Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, T.J. Miller A mechanic and his family join the Autobots as they are targeted by a bounty hunter from another world. THE GOOD: It’s a fun popcorn flick, like any other Bay movie. Don’t come for Shakespeare: this is a movie based on a toy line about robots fighting. If that’s what you’re coming for, that’s what you’ll most certainly get, with gratuitous explosions. Voice acting is great and Wahlberg steps up the acting for the franchise in general. THE BAD: The plot is terrible. Decisions are made out of convenience. There’s so many cheesy lines, you’d swear you walked into a cheesemonger’s shop. The worst part is the incredibly blatant product placement. At some point it becomes laughable. FINAL RATING: 3 PEWS Show notes with live links always available at pewpewpodcast.com
BREAKING PEWS Steam Sale going on right now! THE STACK The Wicked + The Divine #1, Image Comics Gillen McKelvie (W), Wilson Cowles (A) Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead. The team behind critically thermonuclear floor-fillers Young Avengers and PHONOGRAM reunite to start a new ongoing superhero fantasy with a beautiful oversized issue. Welcome to THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, where gods are the ultimate pop stars. But remember: just because you're immortal, doesn't mean you're going to live forever. THE GOOD: 39 pages of gorgeous artwork and coloring. THE BAD: What the hell is going on? FINAL RATING: 3 PEWS MPH #2, Image Comics Mark Millar (W), Duncan Fegredo (A) A good guy dealt a tough hand, Roscoe's found the perfect Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card in the form of super-speed pills called MPH. Now that he knows who put him away, he'll find that revenge is a dish best served...lightning fast! The all-new Millarworld Universe zooms ahead at breakneck speed with Millar and Fegredo's urban adventure tale. THE GOOD: It’s always fun to see what “normal people” would do if they had super powers, and we get to see Roscoe and his crew do that in this issue. In fact, they may be getting the “fun stuff out of the way”, as it seems things are gonna get real with Mr. Springfield in the next issue. THE BAD: Did I say this art was super good last issue? Maybe I was blinded by the interesting concept, but it’s not super great now that I have another issue in my hand. Proportions are really off. Also, most of the issue is basically just dicking around, so it doesn’t really move the story forward, save for Roscoe getting revenge on his boss, which, by the way, I thought was gonna be a dragged out process. FINAL RATING: 3 PEWS KEEPIN’ IT REEL Chef, Open Road Films Jon Favreau, John Leguizamo, Emjay Anthony, Sofia Vergara A chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family. THE GOOD: Very real and believable story. Social media is handled very well within the film and understood. The culinary aspects are authentic and relatable. Fantastic plot with proper pacing, supported by great acting. THE BAD: Personal things like lack of closer with Scarlet Johansson's character, or Emjay possibly being a bit too young for the role. Nothing that truly takes away from the film, however. FINAL RATING: 5 PEWS
NEWS E3 wrap-up Microsoft Halo Master Chief Collection Announced Sunset Overdrive Trailer and Gameplay/Demo Ubisoft Tom Clancy’s: The Division gameplay and trailer Far Cry 4 trailer Sony Destiny gameplay. Alpha available for PS owners only. Little Big Planet 3 announced Nintendo Reveal new Zelda teaser trailer - open world, random boss encounters. Super Smash Bros 4 - New Fighters Reveal - Pacman, Wii Fighters and Palutena. Release date - Holiday 2014 (WiiU), October 3rd, 2014 (3DS) THE STACK Translucid #3, BOOM! Studios Claudio Sanchez, Chondra Echert (W), Daniel Bayliss (A) As far as issues go, this one is pivotal. We are shown the moment The Horse feels The Navigator is slipping and turns himself in in hopes The Navigator will shape up in his absence. We also may have seen the turning point of Cornelius becoming the Navigator… or perhaps it’s the dark past memory that will be his downfall. GOOD: Bayliss and Metcalfe, as always, knock it out of the ballpark with their line art and colors. But the writing may overshadow it this time: this issue reaches into a darker place we haven’t been yet, shaking the foundation of our main character to his very core. Theories will be debunked and the series will veer far off the path of predictability going forward. BAD: Ending feels a bit abrupt, but we decided it was done purposefully… so we aren’t gonna knock it. FINAL RATING: 5 PEWS KEEPING IT REEL 22 Jump Street, Columbia Pictures Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt and Jenko when they go deep undercover at a local college. THE GOOD: Good pace, kept the story moving. Self-aware, made fun of themselves for making a sequel. Good movie to watch without knowledge of the first film. Comedy was funny, only a handful of toilet humor. THE BAD: Story too similar to the first movie. Smaller plot points were not wrapped up. FINAL RATING: 4 PEWS How to Train Your Dragon 2, Dreamworks Pictures Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler When Hiccup and Toothless discover an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. THE GOOD: Excellent animation, fantastic plot, hilarious for both adults and kids. THE BAD: TOO DAMN SAD. FINAL RATING 5 PEWS
