Released at a time when the world wasn't ready, "Impossible Princess" marked a bold, personal, and experimental shift for Kylie Minogue - far from the glittery pop she was known for. Critics were confused, fans were divided, but today? Many consider it her most daring and emotionally raw work.In this episode, Chris and Chantel Nicole take a brutally honest track-by-track journey through Kylie's so-called "indie era," breaking down the production, lyrics, vocals, and visuals that made this album such a standout in her discography. Was "Impossible Princess" truly a misunderstood masterpiece... or just misunderstood? The perfect anime to review on this podcast; Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad also ranks a solid 8.29 on MyAnimeList and is considered one of the greatest anime of its genre. We fell in love with this anime mostly because the music is amazing but also because it is so unbelievably relatable for Emily and I. All the trials and tribulations of discovering a new passion, learning and developing a talent, forming a band, gigging with that band, and finding success all while coming of age. The only critique we had for Beck was that the animators didn't animate the instrument playing correctly haha but it didn't take away from the story itself! However, we were very impressed by the voice acting from both the Sub and Dub versions of the show. Either one is a great watch! So go watch it!Final Rating: 6.5/7 (-0.5 for not releasing an OST with the background score)YouTube Playlist: AN-37: Beck: Mongolian Chop SquadInstagram: @animenoisepodcastTikTok: @animenoisepodcastYouTube Channel: AnimeNoiselinktr.ee/animenoiseCashApp: $emberbbCheck out our merch on Etsy! What do you do when your very brief career as a Jedi Knight apprentice comes to a screeching halt cause the Empire wants to execute you? You turn your broken lightsaber into a microphone and start a fucking rock band!!This episode of Visions was truly a fun watch. Angsty teen dreams of rock-stardom and winning over the hearts of your adversaries with your music; needless to say, it was very relatable to our infamous podcast hosts and warmed their hearts with feelings of nostalgia. That being said, the music wasn't very "Star Wars" but it was certainly enjoyable. All the themes for the band of protagonists were great and fit the characters really well. They were just so short. We wanted more!Without further ado, time to join in the adventurous feelings of rock n' roll youth!Final Rating: 3.75/7YouTube Playlist: AN-34: Star Wars Visions (Tatooine Rhapsody)Instagram: @animenoisepodcastTikTok: @animenoisepodcastYouTube Channel: AnimeNoiselinktr.ee/animenoiseCashApp: $emberbbCheck out our merch on Etsy! Break out the hippie crack cause this anime is TRIPPY. Seriously, I don't think it would be inappropriate to serve this anime with a helping of psilocybin mushrooms and a side of whip-its... Just make sure you've got a healthy state of mind cause this show is brutal and freaky enough to send you spiraling into a bad trip.Okay, maybe we'll save the psychedelics for the OST.Dorohedoro translates to "mud-sludge" in english and the music unit that composed the score, (K)Now_NAME, did a phenomenal job capturing the setting and emotional feel of "The Hole," the fictional city where most of the Dorohedoro plot takes place. "The Hole" acts as a kind of sewer or gutter where the litter, scum and magical waste of the sorcery world ends up creating chaos for the poor citizens that live there. Between the industrial percussion, dark yet mystifying music beds, organized noise, and synthesized instrumentation that felt organic, the composers nailed the world building in this score. From Black Sabbath, Deftones and Slipknot to Billie Eilish and classic horror film scores, you can hear all the musical influences from piece to piece yet the music still feels incredibly unique. If you aren't already impressed, (K)Now_NAME also composed and arranged the OP and all 6 ending sequences as well, working hand in hand with the author of the manga, Q Hayashida, who wrote all the lyrics.Dorohedoro is without a doubt interesting and just downright weird. The story hooks you in, the characters are very well written and the music was super fun to analyze. So, without further ado, let's dive into "The Hole."Final Rating: 6/7YouTube Playlist: AN-36: DorohedoroInstagram: @animenoisepodcastTikTok: @animenoisepodcastYouTube Channel: AnimeNoiselinktr.ee/animenoiseCashApp: $emberbbSupport the show

Book (Wine) Club: Reading Between the Wines with Lauren Popish
Hello and welcome to Book Wine Club Season 2, a podcast where I, Lauren Popish, pair my latest read with a new wine, and then talk it out with my opinionated and inebriated co hosts, Ryan Conbruck and Julia Popish. On today’s episode Ryan, Julia, and I will be discussing the second half of The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel. If you haven’t listened to the previous episode where we discussed the first half of the book, you’re going to want to stop, go back, and listen to that first.Today we’ll be pairing our read with a glass or three of 2019 white blend called Big Salt from Ovum. Pour yourself a glass and stay tuned.Link to book: https://amzn.to/2R3qaDmLink to wine: https://madwine.com/white-blends/92138-ovum-deep-water-big-salt-white-blend-2019.htmlThe Glass Hotel by Emily St. John MandelIt’s 301 pages in length. For this episode, we read to page 160. I pulled this description from online:Vincent is a bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star lodging on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. On the night she meets Jonathan Alkaitis, a hooded figure scrawls a message on the lobby’s glass wall: “Why don’t you swallow broken glass.” High above Manhattan, a greater crime is committed: Alkaitis is running an international Ponzi scheme, moving imaginary sums of money through clients’ accounts. When the financial empire collapses, it obliterates countless fortunes and devastates lives. Vincent, who had been posing as Jonathan’s wife, walks away into the night. Years later, a victim of the fraud is hired to investigate a strange occurrence: a woman has seemingly vanished from the deck of a container ship between ports of call.About the author:St. John's my middle name. The books go under M.Emily St. John Mandel's fifth novel, The Glass Hotel, was recently published in Canada and the US, and is forthcoming in the UK in August. Download this episode I'm torn about this one. No, really, I am. I really encourage you to listen to our way-too-long Podcast on this film because we get into some great conversations. On one side you have the Marvel fan in me. It's the one who has been to every opening night for nearly every Marvel film since Iron Man 2. That's the guy who researches movies and characters to learn more about their powers and possible story directions. That Ken easily gives this a 10/10. Then there is that other side of me. The one who goes to the movies to see something he didn't even know he wanted to see. The one who feels movies should run as tight as possible, so every line of dialogue and scene has a purpose. The guy who feels like it shouldn't take a full hour of exposition to get us into the main plot of the movie. That Ken marks this down at about a 7/10. I'm torn because all the things I love about EndGame are exactly what I hate about it. Consider all the things you have to know just to understand the motivations of the characters. You'll need to brush off Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man, the entire Captain America trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 2., Ant-Man and the Wasp, and *maybe* Captain Marvel. Far from being a sequel, this is a behemoth of a feat to wrap up 11 years of movies. As a fan, this is great. As a casual movie goer, it leads to a bloated film that tries to wrap up too much in one sitting. As a fan it was everything I wanted to see (and more) but as casual viewer it had the predictable formula of a super hero movie. The fan in me knows that this movie wasn't made for the casual movie-goer. It was made for you and I, the fans. Endgame really was/is the tightest story the Russo Brothers could weave for the adoring fans who have stuck with the MCU for so long. It's for everyone who could name every single Avenger on the battlefield in the final battle with Thanos and his army. It was not for the people who knew that a major Marvel film would have some sort of major battle and think that to be cliche. So is it an epic conclusion or a cliche outing of superhero antics we've sen over and over? Is it detail-driven film that pays off all the knowledge we've amassed since 2008 or bloated film that could have lost 30% of its girth and still got the point across? The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Long term fans are going to love it. Short-term fans probably will too. This is what we do. We are fanatics. Want to watch an action flick? The last battle alone makes this worthy. But I keep stopping myself from fully getting on board. As a movie itself, I just think it is good, not great. The MCU is roughly the length of one season of a TV show, but I've always felt like people could join the ride at any time. That's probably not true anymore, but I'm not sure I can hold EndGame responsible for that. Instead, I consistently come down to the fact that EndGame does great fan-service, but it is a good-not-great movie. Final Rating: 8/10
Spoilers Ahead: I'm not even gonna try to keep this spoiler-free. You've been warned. I've sat through some truly awful movies since I started this blog. I've watched movies so terrible that I've begged God to grant me the strength to make it to the end credits while simultaneously writing an email to Bob Iger demanding a refund. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is not one of those movies. Right now, fans are overreacting. As I write this, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has the lowest fan rating of any Star Wars film on Rotten Tomatoes. With a 56 percent, it beat the record of Atack of the Clones by one point. I've seen several Star Wars fans say that this film makes the prequels look good, which is possibly the worst insult a Star Wars film could receive. I think many of these fans would benefit from watching a truly terrible movie like The Good Dinosaur or The Lone Ranger. The Last Jedi is not the worst Star Wars film ever made, but it is incredibly lazy. The Lazy Jedi Those that like The Last Jedi praise writer and director Rian Johnson for taking a visionary look at the world of Star Wars. They write articles with headlines like "The Last Jedi Doesn't Care What You Think About Star Wars." Johnson burns down what we know about Star Wars by killing off Snoke, having Rey's parents be no names (which I still don't believe), and refusing to conform to the Star Wars you know and love. There is genius in that strategy, but Johnson executes it in the laziest possible way. He doesn't just gloss over the explanations for characters from Episode 7. He obliterates the backstory for any character he introduces. The man with the Red Plume plays a central role in the story until he is deemed insignificant. How great would it have been in the man in the red plume only turned out to be the bodyguard for the woman beside him who was the real codebreaker? A move like that would take imagination and several revisions of the script. Or, you could be lazy and just write the characters into a prison cell with a person who has the exact skills they are looking for. Or consider one of the crucial scenes when the rebel escape pods are leaving their doomed cruiser. An inventive script would have allowed the resistance to have an elaborate plan in the face of the First Order's ability to track escape pods. A lazy script would have a line of dialogue that shows the resistance "can't track" the escape pods for some nonsense reason. Johnson didn't have the answers fans were looking for from Episode 7, but he also didn't have the answers we were looking for from Episode 8. How was Leia able to somehow revive herself in space and force fly back to the ship? What happened to the man in the Plume? If the Jedi order is over, why does Luke call Rey a Jedi? If you literally have a Jedi mater burn down the ancient texts of the Jedi order to start something new, why would you put those old texts on the Millenium Falcon to restart the Jedi order? How did Rose's ship not explode when she crashed full force into Finn? How are some people (like the kid at the end) able to use the force without any training while Luke, Anakin and everyone before them needed training to use the force? These are the questions a good script can answer, but The Last Jedi is a lazy script. A Flawed Hero Despite its faults -- and there are many -- The Last Jedi does have many good qualities that I feel fans are missing. The idea that Luke Skywalker still struggled as a leader after Return of the Jedi was refreshing and inspiring. An imperfect Luke Skywalker is much easier to relate to than an all-powerful Jedi. Yoda's rebuke of Luke's failure to pass on his failures to those he taught hit exactly the right tone. This was more impactful since Yoda was the one who pressed the button to burn the ancient texts. It was the past telling the present to let go so the future can have its time. There are several messages that the film tries to get across and sometimes it is incredibly successful. For example, Poe's lesson in leadership was heavy handed in the script, but it was still impactful. Sometimes there are situations you can't blast your way out of and if Poe is to become the leader of the new resistance -- hint: he will -- he has a lot to learn. It's as if Johnson was speaking directly to my generation as we begin to assume more leadership roles at work and in the community. Not My Father's Star Wars Perhaps the most important question that The Last Jedi raises is how far a franchise can go before it betrays itself. That is, how far can a movie bend or break the rules of a franchise before it becomes unrecognizable to the fans who loved it in the first place? Johnson attempts to answer this question by revealing the parentage of Rey. For decades, Star Wars fans have known that the force runs in families. If Rey's parents are nobodies, how is she so powerful with the force? Johnson doesn't provide Rey with a simple line of dialogue that might help explain her abilities. Even Luke used to bullseye 2-meter wide womp rats in his T-16 back home before he used the force on the Death Star. Anakin was a pod racer before he became one of the greatest pilots in the rebellion. No matter how much raw ability you have, you will need training--whether professional or amateur--to compete at an all-star level. That's not just the way Star Wars works. That's the way life works. Johnson wants to do away with that notion and that is part of the reasons fans are rejecting it. This isn't my father's star wars, but it's not even my Star Wars. It just doesn't make sense. Johnson is telling fans "Everyone is special," which is another way of saying no one is. In a galaxy like Star Wars, it's easier to write a world where everyone has a mastery of the force. Then you can explain away any unfortunate happening. Consider how Johnson has set up who is the most powerful with the force: Leia - apparently so powerful with the force that she is immortal. Rey - a Hall of Fame caliber Jedi with no training. Kylo Ren - a whiny, unstable dark lord of the sith. Supreme Leader Snoke - an overrated Sith Yoda - An incredibly wise Jedi but not powerful enough to be immortal or stop the rise of the Sith. Luke Skywalker - A flawed has-been from 30 years ago who was defeated by his apprentice Ben Solo (later Kylo Ren). Everyone in the galaxy - Because "everyone" is special. If the list above were College Football rankings, Luke Skywalker wouldn't even make the playoffs. That is a huge rebuke of Star Wars as a franchise. In my Star Wars, the Jedi are the most powerful with the force, but in Johnson's Star Wars the top two spots are not occupied by Jedi. In my Star Wars, Supreme Leader Snoke's mastery of the force would create a problem for even the most experienced Jedi, but in Johnson's Star Wars he can be dispatched before half the movie is over. My Star Wars is set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Johnson's Star Wars has Luke flip that dirt off his shoulders like Jay-Z. I wouldn't be surprised if he had him drop a mic. Where Do We Go From Here? Disney is kind of in a perilous place at the moment. They let Johnson have his take on the franchise without really letting him go so far that it can't be reeled back in. Will JJ Abrams follow his lead with Episode 9, or will we see something more conventional? My hunch is that Disney will play it safe. They want people to like Star Wars. They want people to come to Star Wars land in 2019 and stay in the $1,000 per night hotel. Too many films like The Last Jedi and the most hard-core fans may just stay home from the movies and the parks. Fans have a much easier choice. Abrams will have plenty of room to tell a story as if The Last Jedi never happened. If he chooses to ignore the film, fans will have the right to do the same. If Abrams makes The Last Jedi crucial to Episode 9, fans will have to decide whether they identify enough with this new Star Wars to call themselves fans. For me, that is up in the air right now. I don't need an explanation for everything, but I want the series I follow to make sense. I'm fine with some people being extremely special or even a lot of people being special, but I'll probably lose interest if Star Wars tries to convince me everyone is special. Because then no one is special. That's not Star Wars, it's just lazy. Final Rating: 7.5/10
If I'm honest, there isn't a ton to say about Disney's new movie 'Christopher Robin.' There are no big reveals or any surprises with broader implications to the hundred acre wood universe. It is charmingly simple, just like Winnie the Pooh, and that is what makes it so enjoyable. The movie is directed by Hollywood chameleon Marc Forster, who also directed World War Z and Finding Neverland. It drops us into the hundred acre wood just as Christopher Robin is saying goodbye to his friends and his childhood in general. In many ways, it plays out just as you'd expect. Christopher Robin grows up to forget all about his childhood and becomes an all work, no play, semi-deadbeat dad. At this point, it's up to Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and the rest of the gang to set him straight. If there is one fault of the film, it is that it tries a little too hard to use pooh to speak to the audience. Winnie the Pooh has always been a simple, yet insightful friend to Christopher Robin. He fulfills that role in this film as well, but his insightfulness is a little overwhelming. It's almost like he is trying a bit too hard to set Christopher straight, so it comes off a little disingenuous. All that being said, Pooh still charms the entire family. It is good for what it is and a perfect reminder of the magic of childhood for grown-ups who have long since left their magical play lands behind. Final Rating: 7.5/10
The most important thing to understand about A Wrinkle In Time is that it is based on a novel that is aimed at pre-teens. So it is positive. Get over it. But the fact that it is based on a tween novel means the movie moves slower than it should and some plot points are oversimplified. It's sad because I wish I had more positive things to say about the movie. Minor spoilers ahead. Director Ava Duvernay's Wrinkle is a love letter to pre-teen girls. It encourages them to stand up for what they believe in and not be afraid of their intelligence. Protagonist Meg Murry (Storm Reid) is consistently encouraged to acknowledge her beauty. This is when the movie is at its best. When Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey) takes Meg aside to explain how everything in the universe has led to her being exactly who she needs to be, the movie sings. It is exactly the message that tween girls -- and maybe everyone -- needs to hear. And I can't speak enough positive things about 9-year-old Deric McCabe, who plays Charles Wallace. The entire third act of the movie is placed on his shoulders and he rises to the occasion as the best actor in the movie. When Light Turns to Darkness However, any light that escapes from the film is certainly dimmed by the first 30 to 45 minutes. Audiences must endure pacing that is at a crawl and acting that feels like it belongs in a high school auditorium. The first act does little to draw in those who haven't read the book. It introduces characters like Mrs. What's It (Reese Witherspoon) and Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) with such a casual nature that it's hard to be invested in the characters. Calvin (Levi Miller) receives no introduction whatsoever which makes him a character of little consequence. The film tries, but it never quite captures the magic that has caused so many children to fall in love with it over the years. Final Rating: 7/10
Even before Black Panther smashed box office records and went on to a $218 million four-day debut, it was an extremely important movie. In a movie with a majority black cast, there were no slaves. There was peril, but a white person never appeared to save the day. There were themes of struggles of the inner city, but no crack heads. DC's Wonder Woman had three white actors supporting the title character. In Marvel's Black Panther, only three white characters had lines at all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO6CZ9qXvhM It's hard to understate the importance of Black Panther. Director Ryan Coogler invited audiences of all races to imagine a world that depended on the success of a black protagonist. Somehow in 2018, that is still such a radical idea that people tried to kill it on RottenTomatoes. Coogler helped the idea pay off with a solid story that packs pounds of meaning into every single line. There was nearly flawless execution by Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Lupita N'Yongo (Nakia), and Danai Gurira (General Okoye). Michael B. Jordan takes his performance to a new level and steals the show in his rendition of Killmonger. But at the end of the day, this is much more than a good movie with a majority black cast. Why Is Black Panther Special? We could talk all day about how rare it is for movies with large budgets to have a minority director or a largely minority cast, but that's like saying the heart-shaped herb of Wakanda makes someone a superhero. The minority stuff is nice, but it doesn't mean anything if no one sees it (See Queen of Katwe). What makes Black Panther special is the structure of the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- a system of films in which every film builds upon one another. In the past, good movies with a majority black cast could be ignored by the audience at large (Again, see Queen of Katwe). However, this is a movie Marvel fans have to see. The things that happen in Wakanda may be consequential to the larger MCU. For the first time, a film by a black director with a majority black cast got a huge budget and a guaranteed audience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIgfQcd_34U Once the movie actually started, Black Panther demonstrated its importance through the layers of the story. The idea of N'Jobu (Sterling K. Brown) choosing to betray Wakanda to help black Americans brings a twist that echoes beyond the world of the MCU. Though there are several prominent women, the action and script make sure there isn't a single damsel in distress waiting for a male hero. Entire books could be written on Killmonger's motivation to aid the two billion people “who look like us,” and we talk about all that and more in the podcast episode below. But perhaps the most important line in the movie comes in one of the end credits scenes. T'Challa is speaking to the United Nations about how Wakanda will begin sharing its technology with the world. At the end of T'Challa's speech, another representative asks, “What could a nation of farmers have to offer the world?” That is the essential question many people have been condescendingly asking black Americans for decades. What Can Black People Offer? Even though black people have made significant contributions to America, they have been largely silenced outside of the world of sports and music. The campaign #OscarsSoWhite grew out of reality that the Academy felt minorities had nothing “award-worthy” to offer in 2016. Or consider the times when sports stars speak out about racial injustice? Recently TV personality Laura Ingraham encouraged NBA players to “shut up and dribble.” Even the first black president was interrupted in the middle of his State of the Union Address. After all, what could black people have to offer in politics? Despite the obvious condescension that comes with this question, black people have worked to answer it for centuries. We have enriched millions of companies and built businesses worth billions. Minorities make up a majority of the box office audience and have propelled hundreds of movies to multi-million dollar takes. Black Panther is special because it was made by black people -- actors, directors, costume designers, etcs -- and black people propelled it to record-breaking numbers. African-Americans are estimated to have made up 40 percent ($87 million) of Black Panther's opening weekend sales. The world has been put on notice. If you build it, we will come out in force. The Implications of Black Panther Black Panther is special because it was the first, but it won't be the last. Executives at Marvel and DC can see the dollar signs from a $218 million opening weekend in February. Hollywood will do what Hollywood does and soon we will see even more studios putting actual time and energy into making movies that are more diverse. This means that outside of the world of cinema, people will finally get to see black people as humans. Rather than being portrayed as slaves, thugs, sidekicks or oppressed, movies with large budgets will start to show the nuance that exists in life as a black person. We will get more stories that show the full humanity of an entire race of people and that could (should) lead to better understanding. Maybe even one day people will stop asking me what the “black community, as a whole,” thinks about the latest topic of the day. At the end of the day, Black Panther is more than just the 18th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is a movie that carried the hopes and dreams of black people and comic book fans. And it didn't disappoint. A movie that fulfills so radically different expectations is truly special. Final Rating: 9/10
If Disney was hoping to create the "definitive version of The Nutcracker," they've got a lot more work to do. The Nutcracker and The Four Realms plays like the first draft of a script from a college senior submitting her final project. In fact, the Four Realms is close to being a really good movie, but it falls short in so many ways. Let's start with the good parts. Mackenzie Foy and Matthew Macfayden add a lot of emotion to their characters of Clara and Mr. Stahlbaum respectively. Costume designer Jenny Beavan should win an Oscar for her creativity in this film. Ballerina Misty Copeland treats all of us to an amazing performance that most of us could not afford to see otherwise. It's cliche to say the best part of a movie is the end credits, but Disney allows Misty to freely dance — which alone might be worth the ticket price. The video below has bits of it. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz1J_mwnMQc&w=560&h=315] Where Nutcracker Goes Wrong There is so much wrong with Four Realms that it is hard to know where to start. The biggest weakness of the film is the story. It tries to take viewers down the well-trodden path of uncertain young girl who becomes a strong character by the end. (Think Mulan, Casey Newton, etc). The problem is that Clara is never uncertain, so moments that should carry weight never seem to quite get there. Her growth as a character is minuscule at best and non-existent at worst. Meanwhile, the main twist in the story seems completely manufactured for the sake of having a twist. Disney is currently so hooked on trying to subvert audience expectations that if Snow White were made today, Dopey would turn out to be a master villain. There are plenty of ways to tell an exciting story even when the audience knows how it will end. The live-action version of The Jungle Book didn't need Bagheera to join Shere Khan for it to be a great movie. If you can get past the story — and that's a big if — you then contend with a few disjointed acting performances. To be fair, this duality is likely due to the fact that one part of the movie was directed by Lasse Hallström and all of the reshoots were done by Joe Johnston. Still Nutcracker Captain Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight) is sometimes stiff and other times loose, while Sugar Plum (Kiera Knightley) is borderline inappropriate in the way she provides a double entendre for some of her lines. Even Helen Mirren, who does a good job as Mother Ginger, can't rescue the doomed script. Final Rating: 5.5/10 Disney was very close to adding another strong female character to the Disney canon, but Four Realms falls short. The costumes and set design are inspiring, but in the end the story is too big of a nut for this film to crack.

Star Trek: Timelines Hello and welcome to another episode of There Are Four Mics: A Star Trek Podcast. I am your host, Joe Heiser. We weren’t able to get together and record an episode discussing Enterprise for this week; so we thought we’d take the opportunity to try something a little different. The Star Trek universe is much more than just the TV shows and movies, especially with the Star Trek vacuum that was created after the end of Enterprise in 2004. So I’m talking books, graphic novels, and video games. In this series, we’re specifically going to take a look at one of the many many Star Trek video games floating around out there. I’m sure I won’t be inciting much debate if I suggest that most Star Trek games have traditionally seemed rather -- Unremarkable. But it’s my hope that as I sift through the titles and give each game a fair chance, I’ll uncover more than a few that do the Star Trek universe justice. If you have recommendations going forward, please, let me know! Send us a tweet @thereare4mics or an email to contact@therearefourmics.com The most recent release seems as good a place to start as any. Star Trek: Timelines. A free to play strategy game available on Android, iOS, and through Facebook. Star Trek: Timelines was developed by Disruptor Beam and released in 2016. Disruptor Beam previously released Game of Thrones: Ascent. Another mobile and browser based free to play strategy game. Before we get started. Free to play is a polarizing concept. The game utilizes many of the classic components of a free to play game that we’ve come to expect: special currency, rare or specialty items, set waiting times for certain aspects of gameplay, advertisements for “special offers”, etc.. And while generally I’m suspicious of titles that rely on this form of revenue, I must say I was impressed with the amount of content I got without feeling pressured to buy in to keep the good times rolling. So if you were ready to dismiss the game based on “free-to-play” alone, I’d stick around and hear what else it has to offer. A not so brief overview Star Trek: Timelines wastes no energy and immediately drops you into the thick of things. Right out of the gate you adopt the role of a captain of your own starship. You’re in the middle of investigating an anomaly alongside a Romulan Warbird commanded by Captain Tomalak. Q, with original voice acting by John de Lancie, crashes the party and warns you that Starfleet may be out of its depth with this one. As if to prove his point, several ships suddenly appear, including none other than the NCC-1701 Enterprise, commanded by a very confused Captain Kirk who is beamed to your vessel. Tomalak takes this as some sort of ploy and you immediately enter into a space battle, something you’ll be doing a lot through the game. You’re given a taste of character abilities as you use Kirk and Spock to boost your ship’s stats, turning the battle to your advantage and allowing you to eventually destroy the Romulan Warbird. Another Warbird decloaks, and destroys the Enterprise. Kirk is distraught, but after Q sends the Warbird to Borg space as penance, he assures Kirk that yes, while his crew are dead, there are countless other versions scattered through time. Q further explains that the timelines and realities of the universe have become intermingled. People, planets, ships from across all times and universes are converging and vying for space. While he trusts you to take care of the warping around and starship battles, he intends to get to the bottom of this and sort it out. You’re given a set of prologue missions to complete and then finally engage with the main story. Now, this opening feels very much like an episode’s cold open. We’re dropped into a situation and given a mystery that needs resolving. A bunch of things happen that we don’t really understand and then we’re whisked away into the proper story to find our footing in this new and dangerous galaxy. Gameplay The main game is divided into different episodes, each comprised of a dozen or more missions. For instance, Episode One deals largely with the Klingons and the Augments, the followers of Khan Noonien Singh for the uninitiated. Are you more sympathetic towards the Klingons? Side with them in conversation, complete more Klingon missions, and ultimately, support them in achieving their final aims for the episode. All of which will influence the direction and control of the region. The entire game is divided up like this, Factions vying for power while you support one side or the other. Each mission awards you with items and credits, which can be used in purchasing a chance for more items, characters, and ship blueprints. Ship blueprints being let you upgrade your ship to increase its stats or even build new ships. The missions come in two flavors: Away Missions, and Starship Battles. For Away Missions you select a certain number of crew according to their listed skills and traits. You encounter a set number of challenges, each emphasizing a specific skill. For instance, if you see there will be some demand for the Medicine skill you might consider throwing in Dr. Phlox. Each challenge can be faced multiple ways, and it's up to you to determine who has the best chance of success, or what is more in line with the kind of captain you want to be. If you are particularly good at selecting crew members with appropriate skills and traits, that’ll work in your favor by adding a bonus to your ability to complete the challenge. A challenge of 25 needs to be met by a crewmember whose skills will add up to 25 after the various bonuses are applied. As you use each crew member they will level up, increasing their skills and making each challenge easier. Each crew member can also be outfitted with specific items to increase these abilities. Starship Battles are a bit different and largely take care of themselves. Your ship will automatically fire and evade, your job is to apply the bonuses your selected crew can offer. For instance, Travis Mayweather can increase your ship’s maneuverability temporarily, making it harder for the enemy to hit. Outside of the main story there are standalone “Distress Call” missions you can complete. These operate much like the episode specific missions but don’t necessarily affect events unfolding in the galaxy. There are a lot of elements blended into Star Trek: Timelines that I really enjoy. There’s a certain RPG aspect to it. Being able to choose your responses, enhance and upgrade your starship, leveling up your crew, and siding with one faction or the other all bring some semblance of roleplay to the game. It’s not simply a matter of filling your crew roster and unleashing them upon each mission, there needs to be a level of strategy and reason behind your choices. The game boasts over 330 recruitable characters at this moment. More having been added since the game’s initial launch; a trend likely to continue. Honestly, this aspect is quite fun to me. While most are variants of the same character, Jazz Musician Odo or Boxing Chakotay, for example, it’s reminiscent of collecting those Star Trek action figures that used to be released years ago. The ability to collect all of these characters and ships is certainly dependent on how much money you’re willing to spend. The ingame currency is referred to as Dilithium, which can be bought in packs of various sizes. You’re allotted a certain number of free chances depending on missions completed, but its obvious that if you were to rely on these free modes of resource gathering it could take you ages to get even the next level ship. In my 5-10 hours of play, I haven’t felt an overwhelming need to spend money, but if I were committed to collecting or progressing quickly, I can see why I’d want to. And you can be sure they give you ample opportunity to do so. One thing to note is how power hungry this game is. I mention this here because gameplay can really be hindered if the game locks up indefinitely. My phone is no spring chicken, a Nexus 6 running Android 7.0, but it’s still a good device. During starship battles especially, where 3D really comes into play, there are times when it's obvious my Nexus is struggling to keep up. Lagging interrupts the music and sound effects, and so can make for a grating experience all around, especially if you’ve got headphones in. Story The story is comprised of smaller stories contributing to the overarching theme of temporal chaos and how to handle it. You won’t find yourself wiping away tears, bursting into uproarious laughter, or aching over the ethical dilemmas, but there’s enough there to keep you going. The game continually introduces characters or their counterparts as the episodes develop, which certainly helps to keep interest and engagement up. What’s most impressive to me I suppose is that the game has enough story for me to require more than one sentence to accurately describe to someone. I don’t generally associate that with free to play mobile games, but Disruptor Beam managed to bring an original plot to Star Trek: Timelines. Graphics The graphics are pretty slick. The 3D starship battles look great for a mobile game, and each character has original art. Sometimes the character art is a bit odd in one way or another, but so many are so good that it’s easy to overlook the occasional haunting rictus or a disproportionate limb. Music I love the music. Very “Star Trek” but distinct enough to not feel pulled from any one series. Sound This is complicated. I think the sound effects are generally quite good. The problem is that many of them are obviously pulled from episodes or movies, and so don’t feel like they mesh quite the same as any original sound effects. And speaking of pulled from episodes, the handful of other characters given a voice are simply lines pulled straight from the screen. That’s not bad, per se, but it does have a soundboard quality to it. Each time I select Mayweather I hear a clip of Anthony Montgomery on some episode of Enterprise answering a hail, “Mayweather.” And the choices of line aren’t always that great. For instance, each time you select B'elanna Torres you hear “I don’t care what people think of me.” Is that really the best line B’elanna had? The most identifiably B’elanna line they could find? I’m not so sure. Voice Acting The voice acting, the original voice acting, performed by John de Lancie in the reprisal of his role as Q is fantastic. It brings a certain polish and charm to the game I’m not sure it would have otherwise. I think it’s that voice that carried me through the opening sequence of events and allowed me to successfully resist the urge to close out the app forever and find something else to do--which is the fate of many of my recently downloaded mobile games. Final Thoughts I’ve seen other reviewers call this game a labor of love. And I’d have to agree. I believe that Disruptor Beam respected the Star Trek characters, stories, and franchise as a whole and in turn, respected their target market. While not a perfect game, and perhaps not the perfect representation of what we see and feel while settling in to watch an episode of The Next Generation or Voyager, it gets as closer than many other Star Trek games I’ve played. I heartily recommend you give this game a shot. It’s free and quick to get into. In a lot of ways it doesn’t even feel appropriate to call it a mobile game simply based on the connotation of that term. I haven’t played a single session for less than thirty minutes. Hell, I like this game so much, that if I do end up buying the in-game currency, I’m not even going to feel embarrassed about it. Disruptor Beam deserves some props for this one. Final Rating: 4.5 Thank you for listening to this episode, we’ll be back soon with our full discussions of Enterprise but hope you enjoyed this little diversion. We’ll see how much traction this gets and might start making a regular series of recordings like this one. If you want to get in touch with us we’re on Twitter @thereare4mics and if you wouldn’t mind, we’d love it if you gave us a rating and review over at iTunes. Thanks again, see you next time.
It's hard to say we didn't know what we were getting into with a director named Kaos. We watch the zero percent rated Matrix lite Ballistics Ecks Vs Sever. How do you waste 70 million dollars? How do you make Lucy Liu unlikeable? What's the name of the movie again? How do you loss a wife like a child at a grocery store? These questions and more will be answered on the episode. We also read a positive review that gets really dark really quick. FINAL RATING: 12% Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus: A startlingly inept film, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever offers overblown, wall-to-wall action without a hint of wit, coherence, style, or originality. TECH REVIEW Ion Block Rocker Good: Great sound, long battery life (75 hours), am/fm for when you just NEED to listen to a radio station, bluetooth connections, and includes a mic for when you feel the need to get your karaoke on. Bad: No USB play, but they do have two USB ports to charge your devices. FINAL RATING: 5 PEWS KEEPIN’ IT REEL Transformers: Age of Extinction, Paramount Pictures Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, T.J. Miller A mechanic and his family join the Autobots as they are targeted by a bounty hunter from another world. THE GOOD: It’s a fun popcorn flick, like any other Bay movie. Don’t come for Shakespeare: this is a movie based on a toy line about robots fighting. If that’s what you’re coming for, that’s what you’ll most certainly get, with gratuitous explosions. Voice acting is great and Wahlberg steps up the acting for the franchise in general. THE BAD: The plot is terrible. Decisions are made out of convenience. There’s so many cheesy lines, you’d swear you walked into a cheesemonger’s shop. The worst part is the incredibly blatant product placement. At some point it becomes laughable. BREAKING PEWS Steam Sale going on right now! THE STACK The Wicked + The Divine #1, Image Comics Gillen McKelvie (W), Wilson Cowles (A) Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead. The team behind critically thermonuclear floor-fillers Young Avengers and PHONOGRAM reunite to start a new ongoing superhero fantasy with a beautiful oversized issue. Welcome to THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, where gods are the ultimate pop stars. But remember: just because you're immortal, doesn't mean you're going to live forever. THE GOOD: 39 pages of gorgeous artwork and coloring. THE BAD: What the hell is going on? FINAL RATING: 3 PEWS MPH #2, Image Comics Mark Millar (W), Duncan Fegredo (A) A good guy dealt a tough hand, Roscoe's found the perfect Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card in the form of super-speed pills called MPH. Now that he knows who put him away, he'll find that revenge is a dish best served...lightning fast! The all-new Millarworld Universe zooms ahead at breakneck speed with Millar and Fegredo's urban adventure tale. THE GOOD: It’s always fun to see what “normal people” would do if they had super powers, and we get to see Roscoe and his crew do that in this issue. In fact, they may be getting the “fun stuff out of the way”, as it seems things are gonna get real with Mr. Springfield in the next issue. THE BAD: Did I say this art was super good last issue? Maybe I was blinded by the interesting concept, but it’s not super great now that I have another issue in my hand. Proportions are really off. Also, most of the issue is basically just dicking around, so it doesn’t really move the story forward, save for Roscoe getting revenge on his boss, which, by the way, I thought was gonna be a dragged out process. FINAL RATING: 3 PEWS KEEPIN’ IT REEL Chef, Open Road Films Jon Favreau, John Leguizamo, Emjay Anthony, Sofia Vergara A chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family. THE GOOD: Very real and believable story. Social media is handled very well within the film and understood. The culinary aspects are authentic and relatable. Fantastic plot with proper pacing, supported by great acting. THE BAD: Personal things like lack of closer with Scarlet Johansson's character, or Emjay possibly being a bit too young for the role. Nothing that truly takes away from the film, however. FINAL RATING: 5 PEWS

We are shown the moment The Horse feels The Navigator is slipping and turns himself in in hopes The Navigator will shape up in his absence. We also may have seen the turning point of Cornelius becoming the Navigator… or perhaps it’s the dark past memory that will be his downfall. GOOD: Bayliss and Metcalfe, as always, knock it out of the ballpark with their line art and colors. But the writing may overshadow it this time: this issue reaches into a darker place we haven’t been yet, shaking the foundation of our main character to his very core. Theories will be debunked and the series will veer far off the path of predictability going forward. BAD: Ending feels a bit abrupt, but we decided it was done purposefully… so we aren’t gonna knock it. FINAL RATING: 5 PEWS KEEPING IT REEL 22 Jump Street, Columbia Pictures Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt and Jenko when they go deep undercover at a local college. THE GOOD: Good pace, kept the story moving. Self-aware, made fun of themselves for making a sequel. Good movie to watch without knowledge of the first film. Comedy was funny, only a handful of toilet humor. THE BAD: Story too similar to the first movie. Smaller plot points were not wrapped up.
