Trooping the Colour 2025 was a blend of pageantry, poignancy, and power plays. King Charles III marked his official birthday with a moving tribute to victims of the Air India crash, wearing a black armband and requesting a minute's silence. Catherine, Princess of Wales, made her highly anticipated return to royal duties after cancer treatment, drawing cheers as she joined her family for the parade and balcony appearance. Meanwhile, Prince Harry remained conspicuously absent. In the King's Birthday Honours, cultural icons David Beckham, Gary Oldman, and Roger Daltrey were knighted, earning their “Sir” titles. At the King's Foundation Awards, Charles rubbed elbows with Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, and Stanley Tucci.Get ready for our new series Crown and Controversy coming July 13th. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 103 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Karen Peterson to discuss the next film in their Peter Jackson series, The Lovely Bones (2009). Oh how the mighty fall. By the end of the 2000s, director Peter Jackson was still riding off the high of The Lord of the Rings and King Kong, as he looked to make his next project. In finding the novel The Lovely Bones, Jackson connected with the idea of a young girl using the afterlife to process her death as well as help her family heal after said tragedy, and attempt to catch the person who killed her. Using CGI and green-screen for the in-between world and the afterlife, Jackson tried to bring together one of the most popular young-adult novels of the time, but in doing so, got distracted by his special effects and new techniques for these sequences, and instead, he created an emotionless slog of a film that was (and still is) considered by all to be a massive misstep within his career. Ryan, Jay, and Karen breakdown the film, how Jackson and his team did in adapting the novel to the big screen, the major casting shift at the center of the film, the current status of Saoirse Ronan's career, how Stanley Tucci should never have hair in a movie, and how massive of a misstep it is from the same mind that brought us Heavenly Creatures. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h21m. The guys will be back next week to conclude their series on the films of Peter Jackson with a review of his set of other Middle Earth films, The Hobbit trilogy. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
Paul picked "The Core" for this installment of the Sci-Fi Shuffle because he expected it would be the perfect film. And it certainly is a film! I mean, it's got everything: cool teachers, mean scientists, evil super weapons and DJ Qualls! We also talk about birds and whales.
It's just Kevin and Lauren this week... until it isn't... and then it is again. There's a lot to talk about, with The Outsiders the Musical, The Last of Us Season 2 Finale, Bad Shabbos, The Fountain of Youth, and The Last Showgirl. Lauren kicks off the show by talk about The Outsiders, last years Tony Award winner for best musical. If you recognize the name, it is in fact the same as the '80s Brat Pack film. While that might sounds like it shouldn't work, it absolutely does. With a great set design and score, the show really is spectacular. As Lauren was discussing that show, Andrew (who had already told everyone he had better things to do than waste his evening with them, mind you) popped in. This gave him and Kevin the chance to talk about the last 2 episodes of The Last of Us Season 2. The agreement is that episode 6 was spectacular and the finale was solid and Andrew, with a little time to ruminate, has found himself understanding Abby's story and Ellie's shortcomings a little more than before. All in all it's a great finish and cliffhanger for a solid season. After Andrew exits only slightly less unceremoniously than he arrived, Lauren talks about the indy film, Bad Shobbos. It's a low budget comedy with a cast of actors you'd recognize but most likely can't name beyond Kira Sedgwick, but it's wonderfully done and a great time. It's a movie that reminds us to look beyond the name on the poster and see what's really being put on the screen and most definitely worth a watch. Next up, Kevin talks about The Fountain of Youth, which is almost the exact opposite situation as Bad Shobbos. Here you have a stellar cast with John Krazinzky, Ntalie Portman, Stanley Tucci, Eiza Gonzalez, and more. Not only that, it's a big budget adventure film. But with all of that, it lacks the heart that something small and special like Bad Shobbos has, proving the point again, it's not the names on the poster, but what's been put to film. Lauren closes the show with The Last Showgirl. This one stirred up a lot of Award Season buzz last year with the resurgence of Pamela Anderson. It gets Kevin and Lauren talking about aging and beauty standards in Hollywood and how they are so often hypocritical. All that aside, it's a great movie and it has a quick runtime, so if you see it streaming, definitely give it a go! As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Pope Francis' death not only led to an outpouring of remembrances. It also unleashed a new wave of memes from the Oscar-nominated movie Conclave. It tells a very fun and very fictional story of the secretive process by which a pope is replaced. It's a twisty political thriller, it's a tense jury drama, and it's got some strong commentary on the state of the Catholic Church. Conclave stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, and it's available to rent or stream at home.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopculture.To access bonus episodes and sponsor-free listening for Pop Culture Happy Hour, subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour+ at plus.npr.org/happy.
